Individual Music Tuition

West Moreton Anglican College offers individual instruction in singing, most orchestral and band

instruments, piano, guitar, bagpipes and music theory. The conditions of tuition are as follows:

1. Junior School students in Years P-5 have a fixed lesson time each week whereas in Years 6 -12, individual lessons that occur in class-time are rotated weekly so that students do not miss the same subject consecutively. Before and after school lessons may also be available in consultation with the relevant instrumental teacher.

2. If a student wishes to discontinue lessons during the school year, notice should be given towards the end of a school term. Such notice of withdrawal should be stated in a letter addressed to the Director of Creative Arts and Extra-Curricular Programs. Where notification of withdrawal has not been given by the end of a term, the student will be expected to pay for the new term, even if he/she does not wish to take the lessons. This allows the school to meet its contractual obligations with visiting part-time teachers.

3. All continuing students are required to complete a Request for Music Tuition form prior to the commencement of lessons each year.

4. Small group instruction may be available in certain circumstances depending on the recommendation of the instructor.

5. The cost is $34.00 per half-hour or $68.00 per hour (plus Goods & Services Tax, if applicable) and is payable in advance at the commencement of each term. Beginner groups may consist of two to four students and has an associated minimum group lesson fee of $45.00 per half hour (eg two students pay $22.50 each; three students $15.00 or four students $11.00). Fees are determined in accordance with the Music Teachers' Association of Queensland guidelines (www.mtaq.org.au).

6. Payment of fees for lessons given by visiting teachers will be a private arrangement between the parents and the visiting teachers. The school will not issue accounts or receive payment for lessons.

7. Fees are payable in advance at the commencement of each term and within 14 days of receipt of the account. A $25.00 late fee may be charged if payment is not made by the due date.

8. Where a student misses a lesson, he/she is expected as a matter of courtesy to make an apology, where possible before the lesson. Lessons missed by students without prior notice or adequate excuse will incur the cost of the missed lesson and the Music Tutor will not be required to reschedule the lesson. Where a student misses a lesson as a result of a school event (e.g. an excursion or an exam), the teacher will make up the lesson if the parent/ guardian notifies the teacher directly at least 24 hours in advance.

9. All students must own a Music Study Diary which is used to record lesson notes, practice routine, theory and communications with parents. Students must bring these diaries to each lesson. Music Study Diaries are available from Music Reception at a cost of $7.00.

10. All Year 7 to 12 students who receive private music lessons are required to have their College Student Diary stamped by their Music Tutor so as to record and assist in the notification of weekly lessons. - The stamps give students a written reminder of their next lesson time. - They assure staff that a student who claims to have or have had a music lesson was in

fact at the lesson. 11. A report on student progress will be provided at the conclusion of each semester.

WestMAC Music Shop

West Moreton Anglican College has established the WestMAC Music Shop for the convenience of

students and parents. The Music Shop was developed to help members of the WestMAC

community find musical resources that may not be easily accessible in the Ipswich area. The shop

operates through Music Reception from 7.30am to 3.30pm on school days. Items can be purchased

at Music Reception with either cash or EFTPOS. A current Price List may be viewed or downloaded

on the College website.

Friend of the Arts Support Group

The Friends of the Arts (FOTA) is a support group of parents who work together to support the

different Arts departments at the College – Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Art. For Music, FOTA

aims to provide support through catering for various music events and fundraising for particular

music related equipment. Parents are warmly invited to volunteer to assist in these initiatives

throughout 2017 by emailing the Friends of the Arts on [email protected].

Photocopying

No copyright music may be photocopied for use in individual instrumental or vocal tuition. Schools

have arrangements with AMCOS, the copyright owner's society that allows us to photocopy

copyright music under certain well-defined conditions. This agreement does not apply to music

used for instrumental and vocal lessons.

Care, Storage & Insurance of Instruments

Musical instruments represent a significant investment for parents. The following guidelines relate

to their care.

Although the Music Department endeavours to provide safe and secure storage for music

instruments, the school's insurance does not cover student property, which includes student owned

instruments. Parents should make their own arrangements concerning insurance. The school will

not be held liable for lost or stolen instruments.

All personal instrument cases should be marked clearly in large letters on the outside and inside.

This discourages theft, helps staff account for instruments, and makes it less likely that students

could take home the wrong instrument by mistake. Marking the actual instrument is not

recommended as permanent marking may decrease its resale value.

Instrument Lockers

Students must be responsible for ensuring that their instruments / cases are stored in the

appropriate place. Instrument Lockers are available for use by Year 7 to 12 students. Students

must see Mrs Kennedy at Music Reception to arrange allocation of an appropriate locker. No

instruments are to be stored in JU6.

Rental Instruments

The Music Tuition Program relies on the annual recycling of College instruments. The cost of renting

a College instrument is $35.00 a term and the levy will be charged to your College account.

Instruments hired through the "Instrument Hire Scheme" fall into one of three categories:

a) Category 1 - On hire for a maximum of 12 months Flute, B-flat Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Violin (full-size only), Bass Guitar

b) Category 2 - On permanent hire (until the student leaves year 12) Piccolo, B-flat Bass Clarinet, E-flat Alto Clarinet, E-flat Baritone Saxophone, French Horn, Tuba,

Double Bass, Bassoon.

c) Category 3 - On permanent hire however, it would be greatly appreciated if parents could supply after 12 months: Tenor Saxophone, Oboe, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Viola, Cello.

It is the student and parent's responsibility to ensure that an instrument is purchased within these

times. And in doing so, please note that it is also the student and parent’s responsibility to notify

Music Reception if you are returning a hire instrument.

Extra-Curricular Music

At the time of writing, the following ensembles are available:

Choirs Small Ensembles Large Ensembles

Bella Voce (Yrs 4-6) + Brass Ensemble Concert Band (Yrs 4-6)

Piccolo Voci (Yrs 1-3) + Flute Choir Performance Band (Yrs 7-9)

Chorale (Yrs 7-12) WestMAC Strings (Yrs 7-12) Symphonic Band (Yrs 10-12)

# Jazz Vocal Guitar Ensemble Big Band

+ Percussion Ensemble

Junior Strings (Years 3-6)

WestMAC Cello Consort

# Entry into Jazz Vocal is by audition and requires compulsory involvement in Chorale.

+ Entry into small ensembles requires participation in a large ensemble, subject to the

agreement of the ensemble Director and the Band Coordinator.

There is an expectation that all students involved in Private Music Tuition at the College participate

in an ensemble that suits the student’s level of ability and the College’s particular needs. Regular

and punctual attendance is required and students must comply with the terms and conditions of

enrolment into the Extra-Curricular Music program.

Extra-Curricular Music Expectations

Student Responsibilities As a member of a WestMAC music ensemble, you are required to adhere to the below terms and

conditions at all times:

1. Students may be required to audition for Music Department staff. The outcome of that audition will determine which ensemble/s is the most suitable for the student's ability level.

2. Attend all designated rehearsals and performances. Where attendance is not possible, an apology is expected. This could be in the form of a short note from a parent, a phone call, or a visit to the appropriate Director of Ensemble from the student. During Exam Blocks, the expectation is still that you attend rehearsals.

3. Be committed to rehearsals. Sometimes temporary changes are made in rehearsal and training schedules during a particular week and the temporary change clashes with a regularly scheduled rehearsal or training. The College’s attitude is always that the student has a commitment to their regularly scheduled rehearsal or training in such circumstances. Where a performance clashes with an external commitment or a regular WESTMAC training session, it is hoped that the College’s needs will come first where possible.

4. Prepare and learn your music outside rehearsals. Rehearsals are to prepare for performances, not learn notes.

5. All students involved in bands or choirs, upon completion of a Music Ensemble Agreement, receive a WESTMAC Band / Choir Folder for each ensemble in which they participate. The students are allocated music which is to be kept in these folders at all times. Records are kept of Folder and Music Part Numbers allocated to students. Folders and music are the property of the College, and are on loan for the duration of the College year. Lost or damaged Music or Folders will be charged at the replacement value of the item and that the charge will be included on the Term Fee Account. ($10.00 for Band and Choir Folders, $5.00 for each piece of music).

6. Entry into Big Band is by audition or invitation and requires compulsory involvement in Performance or Symphonic Band.

7. Entry into Jazz Vocal is by audition and requires compulsory involvement in Chorale.

8. Where a Performance Band (Yrs 7-10) member is invited to join Symphonic Band (Yrs 9-12) the following conditions apply:

The student must meet and maintain the required standard of technical proficiency

The student must maintain their commitment to Performance Band

The above requirements may be waived where a student participates in more than 3 College ensembles

Classroom Music

a) Year 3 String Immersion. Students in Year 3 will study the Violin for a Semester - these lessons are in addition to the

usual Classroom Music lesson each week and at no extra cost to parents. Students then have

the option of continuing these studies through our Private Tuition program. Selected students

may be offered a Mini Strings Scholarship for the duration of Year 4.

b) Year 5 & 6 Instrumental Program All Year 5 & 6 students participate in our new Instrumental Program as part of their Curriculum

studies. Students then have the option of continuing these studies through our Private Tuition

program. For more information, please see the Instrumental Program Information Booklet.

c) Elective Music From Years 9 to 12, students may choose to study music as a subject. It is interesting and

challenging to both those who have studied no music before and to those who are already

significantly experienced.

d) Year 7 & 8 Music Performance (Extension) Students in Year 7 & 8 who have had prior music experience and have been learning an

instrument (including voice) may choose to be part of a Music Extension class. As it is a

performance based subject, students are required to continue private music studies and to be

part of a College ensemble.

e) Year 12 Music Extension Year 12 elective music students have the opportunity to participate in a course called “Music

Extension.” This course enables students who have achieved a high level of skill in musicology,

composing or performing to specialize and make it contribute towards the Overall Position (OP)

score.

Examinations and Competitions

Individual participation in AMEB Examinations or competitions and Eisteddfods is encouraged and

is entirely at the discretion of the student and parent. Those students preparing for examinations or

other solo performances will be required to pay fees for the use of an accompanist, for the

examination itself and any required rehearsals. Rates are dependent on the Grade being taken.

Music Awards Showcase (Sunday 22 October 2017)

Music Awards Showcase is a very special event in the life of the Music Department, at which ALL

bands, choirs and ensembles perform. Awards are also given to acknowledge the contribution that

students have made to the West Moreton Anglican College Music Department. Please mark this

event in your diary.

2017 Music Performance Uniform

Students involved in Big Band, Brass Ensemble, Cello Consort, Chorale, Flute Choir, Guitar

Ensemble, Jazz Vocal, Percussion Ensemble, Performance Band, Symphonic Band and WestMAC

Strings MUST purchase a Music Performance Uniform. Junior School students who are members

of one of the ensembles above may wear College uniform.

**Concert Band, Piccolo Voci, Bella Voce and Junior Strings members do not require a Music

Performance Uniform.

These uniforms are of a specific design and are only available from WestMAC Uniform

Shop.

Please see the Uniform Shop about the selling and availability of second-hand uniforms.

Please note that students also require:

- Black socks - Black school shoes - College Blazer

College rules apply in relation to the wearing of the Music Performance Uniform. Your

cooperation is sought in taking note of these points. Remember – students are members of an

ensemble. Just as there is no room for individuality of performance in such groups, individuality of

STUDENT PARTICULARS

Name of Student: ___________________________Class/Tutor Group: __________

The rental instrument at all times remains the property of West Moreton Anglican College and is

issued on loan to the student subject to the following conditions:

a) The instrument is to be used by the student to whom it is lent and by no other person. b) Every care and attention must be given to the instrument during the period of loan. Any loss or damage to the instrument is to be rectified at the parent's expense. c) Loss or damage of any instrument on loan must be immediately reported to the College. d) The Hirer is encouraged to insure the instrument against loss or accident damage. It may be covered under an existing Householder's policy. e) On no account must the Hirer, student or any other person attempt repairs or adjustments to the instrument. Any damage to, or defects in the instrument, must be brought to the attention of the instrumental teacher. Hired brass instruments will initially be supplied with valve oil or slide grease, with the expectation that they will be replaced throughout the term of the hire period. Students hiring woodwind instruments will have to provide their own reeds as identified by the relevant Woodwind teacher. Due to the lack of moving parts, stringed instruments will be fully maintained by the College. f) The instrument is returnable upon demand at any time for inspection, repair or for any other cause. g) The initial loan agreement is for a period of twelve months. Thereafter, continued use of the instrument will depend on instrument demand and in some cases will require the family to purchase their own instrument. h) All students leaving the College at the end of Semester Two must return instruments by the last Friday in November. i) If in the opinion of the teacher of the instrument, a student is not carrying out reasonable practice or shows little ability with the instrument, the loan may be terminated. j) If a student does not observe College policy on attendance at ensemble rehearsals, the loan may be terminated.

I authorise my child to accept the loan of the instrument described above and I agree to undertake

reasonable supervision of its use. I further agree to the conditions of the loan as stated above.
