Special Instrumental Programs Preparatory SchoolYear 2 Classroom String Program
The Year 2 String Program allows students the opportunity to learn a string instrument in Semester 1. Students are introduced to a variety of musical genres in a selection of achievable pieces over 6 months. The text the students use is called ‘Vamoosh’.
The program includes:
• Tuition for the duration of the program by a specialist string staff. Lessons are held in the Year 2 area.
• Free hire of a violin, viola or cello and string accessories (such as a shoulder rest) for one semester.
• One 30 minute group lesson per week. Group lessons are conducted during school hours with no more than three students per group. Where possible lessons are scheduled to avoid core teaching times.
• One ensemble rehearsal each week – held during classroom music time. The ensemble class also covers much of the practice/performance component of the music curriculum for Year 2.
• Instrumental reports and appropriate assessment – Semesters 1 and 2.
• Concerts to showcase the progress and achievements of the students.
Please note that the text that the students use is not included in the program and is paid as a music levy on your School Sundry Account.
It is the student’s responsibility to bring their instrument and music book to school on their designated day.
For more information please contact Mrs Kaye Timms at [email protected]
Year 6 Classroom Band Program

The instruments offered include:

• Flute
• French Horn
• Saxophone (alto)
• Trumpet
• Euphonium
• Trombone

• Two classroom music reports.
It is the student’s responsibility to fulfill practise requirements at home and to bring their instrument, Essential Elements book and theory book to school on the required days.

Getting there
Pre-Primary to Year 2 students are individually collected from classroom and taken back to the classroom by the instrumental tutor.
Students in Years 3-12 are responsible for getting themselves to and from their lesson.
Locations
See maps at the back of the Handbook.
What to bring to music lessons
• Musical instrument (for drum kit lessons - drum sticks; for guitars – guitar picks and capos).
• Theory and music books
• Music Diary – given to each student (complimentary)
Music books and instrument accessories
Music books and necessary accessories (such as strings, oil, reeds, shoulder rests, resin etc.) will be ordered for you by the instrumental tutor and the cost added to your school account. Alternatively, they can be also be purchased from the Music Office.
Communication/Progress/Feedback
• Each student is issued with a Music Record Book in which they and their teacher will record what has been studied in the lesson as well as what should be covered in their practise for that week. If you have any queries, please feel free to email your music teacher directly (see contact details on page 2 of this hadnbook)
• Instrumental Reports are written twice yearly and are included in your child’s semester reports.
Lessons
Ensembles form a vital part of the Music Program of Guildford Grammar School. It is through participation in music ensembles that students learn both dependence and interdependence whilst they work to perform music alongside their peers.
Membership of ensembles also give the students greater chances to perform, as well as the ability to join in events such as tours, concerts, recordings and other events.
Currently the School of Music has more than 40 ensembles spread across the two campuses, with all ensemble types and sizes catered for. From the Key Masters Club all the way to the 70-piece Guildford Grammar Symphony Orchestra there is a performance opportunity available and fitting for each and every student. Whether your preference is sacred choral music, rock, classical music or jazz, we have it all!
If your child wishes to be a part of the extensive ensemble program please contact the School of Music and we will be only too happy to assist.
Please be aware that the Guildford Grammar Symphony Orchestra (GGSO), Guildford Grammar Big Band and Chapel Choir are auditioned ensembles. Auditions for these ensembles are held in Term 4 for existing students and in Term 1 for students who are new to the School.
Classroom Music
The classroom music program exists to teach Music as an academic discipline from Years 1-12, including ATAR and VET options in senior years. The details of this fully scoped program are available upon request. Although the instrumental and classroom music programs are linked, these both exist independently of each other.

Timetables and LessonsTimetables
• Instrumental lessons are timetabled at the commencement of each term (an email is sent advising that timetables are ready to access on the GGS App).
• Senior School timetables are added to student calendars in SEQTA.
• Preparatory School timetables are emailed to parents from the instrumental tutors or available upon request from the School of Music.
• Any questions regarding timetables to [email protected]
Lesson times
While every effort is made to minimise disruption of the academic timetable, specific requests for lesson times are generally not possible due to the time constraints of our visiting tutors. Where possible, a small number of out-of-school instrumental lessons are arranged and are subject to the availability of tutors.
Multiple instruments
If students are taking lessons for more than one instrument, one of the lessons must be taken outside the academic program.
A third instrument can only be learned if direct permission is received from the Head of Preparatory School or Head of Senior School through the Director of Music.
Missed lessons
The instrumental program allows for 32 lessons throughout the year. This amount has been devised to allow up to six lessons to be ‘missed’ without any financial ramifications (this covers activities and events such as sports carnivals, camps, excursions, tours and exam periods that clash with scheduled lessons). As such, missed lessons will not be ‘made up’, and we will attempt to ensure that 32 lessons are completed by the end of the year. Please note the following:
• Missed lessons due to circumstances such as extended family holidays are forfeited and will not be made up. Instrumental tutors are contracted for the full year. These lessons will therefore be forfeit.
• If the student is sick you will still be charged for the lesson.
• If the student has an ongoing illness or injury, this should be discussed with Music Administration at the earliest possible opportunity to avoid ongoing fees.
• If the student has an assessment, exam or excursion which clashes with their music lesson, parents or students are asked to advise the instrumental tutor a minimum of 48 hours before the clash. Students must go to their class assessment, exam or excursion. If possible, the instrument tutor will reschedule the lesson.
• If, for some reason, the instrumental tutor is unable to attend a lesson then you will either be notified in advance, or a notice will be placed on the tutor’s door. Parents are not charged for lessons missed due to tutor absence.
Discontinuing music lessons
Withdrawal from tuition is accepted via the Music Request to Discontinue Lessions Midyear online form at http://onlineforms.ggs.wa.edu.au/ Infiniti/Produce.
• Once the form has been filled in and sent, a cancellation of four weeks’ notice period is in place (not including holiday periods). This means the student has four more lessons available before the lessons cease.
Hired instruments are to be handed in at the last lesson to avoid further hiring costs.
Storing instruments at school
• Senior School – instrument storage shelves in School of Music corridor.
• Preparatory School – storage area outside student classroom.
External Examinations / Festivals / Eisteddfods / Competitions
Students can voluntarily register for external music/vocal/theory examinations including, but not limited to, Australian Music Examinations board (AMEB), ABRSM and Trinity College, London. Tutors can encourage students to enter eisteddfods, music competitions, festivals etc. throughout the year. Please note that if these events have entry fees and accompanist fees if applicable these must be honoured by parents/guardians.
Practice for Boarders
Boarders have been given access to practice rooms. Please email [email protected] to organise booking of rooms before and after school, at recess or lunch.
