THE STORY

In the summer of ’75, PIer Paolo PasolInI Is edItIng one of hIs most controversIal movIes, “salò e le 120 gIornate dI sodoma”. at that tIme PasolInI Is PartIcularly restless. ItalIans have just obtaIned the rIght to dIvorce and the ItalIan communIst Party (PcI) seems to be about to wIn the general electIons causIng some worry across the western block. PasolInI, however, Is not convInced that It wIll be so. from hIs PoInt of vIew, Italy Is truly movIng rIght, towards a consumer culture that seems to be able to conform everyone and everythIng to a PoInt of becomIng “a dIctatorshIP worst than fascIsm”.

whIlst workIng on hIs fIlm, PasolInI Is wrItIng a PeculIar book, “PetrolIo”, not quIte a novel nor an essay, but rather the condemnatIon of a PolItIcal Power that In Italy he sees as corruPted down to the bone marrow.thIs book brIngs PasolInI to research the connectIons between PolItIcal and fInancIal Power. hIs research brIngs hIm to a fInance mogul named eugenIo cefIs at the tIme PresIdent of montedIson and of enI: Italy’s natIonal oIl comPany. a greatly InfluentIal man, whIch PasolInI names troya In hIs book, cefIs Is saId to have commIssIoned hIs Predecessor’s murder, (enrIco matteI), and founded the masonIc organIzatIon P2 In order to control the entIre ItalIan state.

In those same days PasolInI, who Is oPenly homosexual, Is seeIng a young man from the workIng-class suburbs of rome, PIno PelosI. PasolInI and PelosI meet regularly becomIng the talk of the roman suburbs whIch have changed greatly from the tImes of “accattone”. In these same suburbs move shady characters whIch have lIttle to do wIth PasolInI’s PoetIc vIew of lIfe and have chosen the route to crIme: kIdnaPPIng, robbery, drug traffIckIng. they belong to a crImInal organIzatIon that Is gradually takIng over the cIty: soon to be known as la banda della maglIana.

one nIght, the negatIve of “salò e le 120 gIornate dI sodoma” Is taken from technIcolor’s laboratory by thIeves. those thIeves are a bunch of teenage frIends of PelosI but the robbery has been Planned by a bIg fIsh of the banda della maglIana. InItIally, for the ransom of the fIlm, the Producer receIves a request of two bIllIon lIra. later, however, the ransom becomes much more reasonable: three mIllIon lIra.

In the nIght between the fIrst and the second of november 1975, PIer Paolo PasolInI drIves to the Idroscalo wIth PIno PelosI to retrIeve hIs fIlm. truly he Is goIng straIght Into a traP. hIs murder has been Planned In every mInImum detaIl by many accomPlIces, some wIllIng and some unaware, all sImIlar and all equally guIlty. It wIll be all too easy to make It look lIke “the rIghtful murder of a Pervert” and brush It under the carPet for 40 years.

THE DIRECTOR

I MET PIER PAOLO PASOLINI AS A FAMILY FRIEND WHEN I WAS JUST A BOY. YEARS LATER HE REQUESTED ME FOR A SMALL PART IN HIS FILM TEOREMA, HE THEN ASKED ME TO ASSIST MARIA CALLAS AS HE WAS SHOOTING MEDEAS AND FINALLY INTRODUCED ME AS A SCRIPTWRITER TO HIS MASTER AND DISCIPLE SERGIO CITTI, WITH WHOM I WROTE MANY FILMS.FROM 1970 ON, AS I BECAME A JOURNALIST AT L’UNITÀ, PASOLINI CHOSE ME AS PREFERRED INTERVIEWER AND OFTEN CHARGED ME DISCRETELY OF PASSING ON SPECIFIC MESSAGES AND QUESTIONS ADDRESSED TO BERLINGUER’S ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTY (PCI).

THE 2ND OF NOVEMBER 1975, WHEN THE LIFELESS BODY OF PASOLINI WAS FOUND AT THE IDROSCALO, I WAS ONE OF THE FIRST PEOPLE ON THE CRIME SCENE TOGETHER WITH THE FORENSIC EXPERT FAUSTINO DURANTE, (WHO HAPPENED TO BE THE FATHER OF MY GIRLFRIEND AT THE TIME), AND A YOUNG LAWYER NAMED GUIDO CALVI.

IN 1975 THE FIRST TRIAL FOR PASOLINI’S MURDER WAS CARRIED OUT AT THE JUVENILE COURT AS PINO PELOSI WAS THE CONFESSED CRIMINAL. IT WAS TO BE JUDGE MORO’S LAST TRIAL, AS HE RETIRED AFTER HIS BROTHER, ALDO MORO, WAS KIDNAPPED AND KILLED BY THE TERRORIST GROUP RED BRIGADES TWO YEARS LATER. I WAS ASKED BY GUIDO CALVI TO WRITE THE MEMORY WHICH WAS DEPOSITED ON BEHALF OF THE FAMILY. AT THE END OF THAT TRIAL, THE 26TH OF APRIL 1976, PELOSI WAS CONDEMNED FOR THE MURDER OF PASOLINI TOGETHER WITH OTHER UNKNOWN PERSONS AND THE VERDICT FOCUSED ON THE FACT THAT PELOSI WAS RETICENT ABOUT REVEALING WHO THE OTHER PEOPLE WERE. EXACTLY ON THE SAME DAY, THE 26TH OF APRIL 1979, THE SUPERIOR COURT MADE PELOSI’S SENTENCE FOR MURDER DEFINITE WITHOUT EVER EVEN MENTIONING OTHERS INVOLVED.

LA MACCHINAZIONE NARRATES THE LAST THREE MONTH OF PIER PAOLO PASOLINI’S LIFE AND SHEDS NEW LIGHT ON HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH PINO PELOSI. BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT IT WAS: A RELATIONSHIP. THE YOUNG CALL BOY AND THE POET HAD NOT MET BY CHANCE THAT NIGHT AT THE TERMINI TRAIN STATION. PASOLINI AND PELOSI KNEW EACH OTHER AND HAD BEEN SEEING ONE ANOTHER FOR THE PAST FOUR MONTH AND ALL OF THIS MAKES PIER PAOLO PASOLINI’S ASSASSINATION EVEN MORE GROTESQUE.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

DIFFERENT THEORIES ABOUT THE MURDER OF PASOLINI HAVE BEEN CIRCULATING FOR YEARS. PASOLINI WAS CERTAINLY KILLED BY PINO PELOSI WHO WAS AT FIRST THE INSIDE MAN FOR THE ROBBERY OF SALÒ’S REELS AND THEN BATE FOR THE AMBUSH AT THE IDROSCALO. PASOLINI WAS KILLED BY THE INFAMOUS BANDA DELLA MAGLIANA, JUST LIKE JOURNALIST CARMINE PECORELLI AND BANKER ROBERTO CALVI, (WHO FIRST ESCAPED BEING SHOT DOWN BY DANILO ABBRUCIATI IN MILAN TO THEN END UP HANGING FROM BLACKFRIARS’S BRIDGE IN LONDON), OR LIKE EMANUELA ORLANDI, ALL THIS WAS DONE TO RENDER SERVICE TO POWERFUL AND UNSCRUPULOUS MEN AND EARN THEIR GRATITUDE.

PASOLINI WAS STAMPED OUT AS HE BOTHERED EUGENIO CEFIS AS HE HAD BEEN RESEARCHING FOR OVER A YEAR ON THE SEEDY DEALINGS OF THE MAN WHO HAD FOUNDED THE MASONIC LODGE P2 IN 1974 AND IN 1962 HAD ARRANGED THE FATAL ACCIDENT THAT INVOLVED ENRICO MATTEI’S PRIVATE JET, AS TESTIFIED BY ONE OF COSA NOSTRA’S MOST IMPORTANT INFORMANTS, TOMMASO BUSCETTA. PASOLINI ALLOWED HIMSELF TO BE KILLED AND AS A CHRIST-LIKE FIGURE HE PLANNED HIS MARTYRDOM IN DETAIL, AS STATED BY ARTIST GIUSEPPE ZIGAINA, PIER PAOLO PASOLINI’S BEST FRIEND SINCE CHILDHOOD.

LA MACCHINAZIONE EMBRACES ALL THESE DIFFERENT THESIS WEAVING THEM INTO ONE SIMPLE, CREDIBLE PLOT. WHY? BECAUSE THERE IS SOME TRUTH IN EACH AND EVERYONE OF THESE VERSIONS, TO THE POINT THAT THEY ARE ALL TRUE.THE SAME CAN BE SAID FOR PIAZZA FONTANA IN MILAN AND PIAZZA DELLA LOGGIA IN BRESCIA, FOR THE KIDNAPPING AND KILLING OF ALDO MORO, FOR THE BOMB AT THE BOLOGNA TRAIN STATION. THE TRUTH ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT AND DESTABILIZING EVENTS WHICH HAVE HIT ITALY IN THE PAST 45 YEARS IS STILL UNKNOWN. BUT THIS SAME TRUTH IS HIDDEN AMONGST MANY TRUTHS WE ALL KNOW, ALL EQUALLY REASONABLE AND PLAUSIBLE. THIS PARTICULARLY MACHIAVELLIAN RELATIONSHIP WITH THE TRUTH IS A PECULIARITY OF ITALIANS, JUST LIKE THEIR CODE OF SILENCE AND THEIR CHAMELEONIC TRAITS.

THIS IS NOT A GANGSTER MOVIE IN THE CLASSICAL AMERICAN SENSE. THE SUBURBAN BULLIES AND CALL BOYS IN LA MACCHINAZIONE ARE NOT THE ARCHETYPICAL VILLAIN. THEY ARE MORE LIKE LOSERS AND WHEELER-DEALERS, OFTEN IGNORANT AND INNOCENT LIKE THE COMMUNITIES AND CHARACTERS SHOWN BY PASOLINI IN ACCATTONE AND OTHER FILMS. I HAVE USED MANY “REAL FACES” AND HAVE HAD THE CHANCE TO CHOSE THEM ONE BY ONE AS I WAS TAUGHT BY PASOLINI HIMSELF AND AS CAN BE SEEN IN DE SICA’S WORK. MY INTEREST LIES IN NARRATING THE PROGRESSIVE LOSS OF CANDOR AND INNOCENCE WHICH OCCURS IN THESE CHARACTERS CAUGHT IN EVENTS THEY CANNOT CONTROL NOR COMPREHEND. THIS TO ME IS THE ESSENCE OF WHAT PASOLINI WAS TRYING TO WARN US ABOUT. THE EVENTS SURROUNDING HIS DEATH AND WHAT HAS HAPPENED SINCE ARE THE EVIDENCE HE WAS RIGHT.
