In September, 2008, the Church observes the 50th Anniversary of De Musica Sacra, issued on September 3, 1958. This document established rules for the outward participation of the congregation in three different levels for the Missa Cantata (High Mass) and the Missa Solemnis (Solemn High Mass). In the first, the people would also sing the liturgical responses (i.e. Et cum spiritu tuo, Amen, etc.). In the second, the people would also sing the Ordinary (i.e. Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, etc.). In the third, they would also sing the Proper (i.e. Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, etc.). Pope Pius XII (1939-1958)

On September 14, 2008, the Church marks the first anniversary of Summorum Pontificum, which went into effect on this date in 2007.

Pope Benedict XVI’s motu proprio makes possible a full restoration of the Classical Roman Rite according to the liturgical books of 1962 of

Blessed John XXIII. To learn more about this Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite visit the multi-media website www.SanctaMissa.org, which is a creation of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius. There is a special section there

on the Liturgical Music of the Church.

200th Anniversary of the Death of Haydn Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), the most celebrated composer of his time, excelled in every genre and, along with Mozart and Beethoven, represents the high point of Viennese Classicism. His long career began amid the patronage of the late Baroque and concluded as the early flowerings of Romanticism began to sweep across Europe. Born on 31 March 1732, the son of a master wheelwright and brother to two fellow professional musicians, Haydn’s musical talents were recognized early. In 1739/40 he became a choirboy at the Stephansdom in Vienna and was given a musical education. He composed 14 Masses (Mass in Time of War, 1796; Lord Nelson Mass, 1798); oratorios, including The Creation (Die Schöpfung, 1798) and The Seasons (Die Jahreszieten , 1801).
