Introduction: Alice Patterson, born Alice Mary Smith in 1862, was a key figure in the early development of Osteopathy. Having known A.T. Henry died in 1902, but Alice continued to work as a physician for 25 more years, and kept the Patterson name for the rest of her life. From 1908 to 1916, she was married to George H. Shibley, a sociologist, writer, and D.O. A wealthy socialite and a leader in the osteopathic movement, Alice served as the President of the District of Columbia Osteopathic Association for several years and became the first Vice President of the American Osteopathic Association in 1918. She died of heart failure in 1928, at the home of her daughter in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Still, the Smith’s family doctor, treats Alice Link’s asthma

Alice attends Missouri State Normal School & Smith Business College 1884 Dec 31 Alice marries Henry E. Patterson 1886 Nov 27 Alice gives birth to daughter Marian Lee Patterson (“Lee”). 1893 Alice and Henry enroll in the American School of Osteopathy (ASO), which has 18 students.

They bring the first materials for dissection into Kirksville. 1894 Nov Alice discovers an osteopathic cure for gall stones. 1895 Alice and Henry graduate from the ASO, which has grown to 283 students. Both take on

teaching positions; Henry becomes Dr. Still’s secretary. They form a private practice nearby. 1897 Alice receives a postgraduate degree from the ASO. 1898 Winter- Alice and Henry “take a rest,” resigning their positions at the school and opening a winter in St.

Augustine, Florida. 1898 Summer-Alice and Henry move their practice to Mackinac Island, Michigan, for the summer. ca. 1899 Alice and Henry are sponsored by Senator Foraker (R-Ohio) and open a practice in Washington

D.C.’s Washington Loan and Trust building. 1902 Apr 10 Henry Patterson dies at age 41. 1906 Lee gives birth to Alice’s first grandchild, David. 1906 Jan 31 Alice marries George H. Shibley, D.O., and changes her surname to “Patterson-Shibley.”
