MUSEUM AND SCHOOL LATVIAN NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART INETA ZELCA SIMANSONE, HEAD OF COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT [email protected] Slide 2 MUSEUM AND SCHOOL Presence of art and art history teaching in National educational system Ministry of Education develops school curricula standards and facilitates teachers work by: Providing methodological material in line with curricula standards Collaborating with school teachers in drafting of classroom lessons Lesson in Museum and serves as a supplementary to the school curriculum informal learning activity in a museum Continuing education Slide 3 MUSEUM AND SCHOOL There are two subjects in Latvian school education system related to art history which contains broad references to art and art history : Visual arts Culturology (Cultural studies) Slide 4 MUSEUM AND SCHOOL Objectives of school curricula standard in Visual arts: To foster development of pupils emotional, creative and intellectual capabilities, aprehension of diversity of visual arts, and stimulate pupils interest in exploration of national and global visual arts manifold expressions. Objectives of school curricula standard in Culturology (Cultural studies): To foster development of a culturally educated individual by means of disclosing richness of worlds cultural heritage. Slide 5 MUSEUM AND SCHOOL Visual arts / Grade 1 to 9 / Primary school curricula pattern Pattern is shaped in accordance with Primary school curricula standard in Visual arts. The proposed curricula pattern has not a binding but suggesting character. Pattern determines aims and objectives of the subject, methods, contents and time frame for the teaching process, as well as methods and criteria for learning result evaluation. It defines three structural components of the teaching subjects content: language of art, perception of art and creativity, art as a element of culture. Slide 6 MUSEUM AND SCHOOL Visual arts / Grade 1 to 9 / Primary school curricula pattern The curriculas proposed teaching model consists of three major methodological elements: - posing the art related question, - studying and analysing the question, - and, finally, interpreting the question. Slide 7 MUSEUM AND SCHOOL Visual arts / Grade 1 to 9 / Primary school curricula pattern Teaching methods: As to reach the objectives set in curricula, teachers have to choose teaching methods which stimulate pupils joy for learning, taking creative use of gained knowledge and skills, and to be open for interaction and have a good self esteem: textual analysis, demonstration of artworks, creative experiments, practical tasks, brainstorms, discussions, games, etc. Slide 8 MUSEUM AND SCHOOL Methodological materials in Visual arts for Secondary school The objectives of this methodological material is building of a qualitative content and clear structure of Visual arts lessons in Secondary school by deploying elements of research, experiment and other creative teaching methods Methodological material comprises 13 topics: - Artwork and artist, - Artwork and spectator, - Landscape, - Symbolism, - Design, etc. Slide 9 MUSEUM AND SCHOOL Lesson in Museum and In 2006 collaboration was initiated between Ministry of Education and Latvian museums with an aim to create a special offer for school teachers to have particular classroom lessons in museums just in line with general curricula standard. The practical task of Lesson in Museum and program is to help teachers and pupils to find venues for having school lessons outside the classroom. The far reaching aim of Lesson in Museum and is strengthening and testing of pupils theoretical knowledge in praxis, and developing of object based critical thinking. Slide 10 MUSEUM AND SCHOOL Lesson in Museum and Gains: - More frequent school group visits to museums and much more prepared target audience as the visit corresponds to school curriculum; - Facilitated and targeted planning of museum visit for teachers; - The learning effects of museum visit is comparatively more long lasting given that the topic is discussed with pupils both prior and after the visit in the classroom. LNMA organizes Special Educational Program for teachers Learning In The Museum special targeted seminars for teachers visiting museum with school groups. Seminars are organized twice a year and are well attended. Aim: to familiarized teachers with newest museum exhibitions and to give them confidence and knowledge. It gives them possibility to chose two options for visiting with school group to book guided tour or lessons in the museum, or by using methodological advices and materials given by the museum to led lesson or lecture by themselves.
