Students at FRSD will not be in school on Columbus Day, Oct. 13, 2014. Our FRSD teachers, however, will be working in teams at their buildings to understand data related to the PA School Performance Profile. Teachers will be digesting information related to building-level academic scores in the Educator Effectiveness System. The data focuses on our students in grades 3, 4 and 5 and how they scored on PSSA in Literacy, Math, Science and Writing. Teachers will also be discussing academic progress of groups as well. Another important topic will be how to close the achievement gap for students. Teachers will finish the day working closely in their Professional Learning Communities to discuss and design required Student Learning Objectives as well as assessments of how to achieve this goal. It will be a busy and productive day. Fall Parties and clearances

FALL PARTIES

We will be celebrating our Fall Parties on Friday, October 24th. No costumes will be worn at

the parties. This is a school district policy. Our homeroom mom and parent volunteers will

plan games for the children. Kindergarten party time (11:30 to 12:15 PM) is different than

Fall party time for grades 1-5. The times for these parties are in the afternoon from 2:15

PM until 3:00 PM.

PLEASE SEND IN COPIES OF YOUR CLEARANCES ASAP!

If you are interested in volunteering in your child’s classroom, clearances are required.

Links to the clearance forms can be found on the Sloan Elementary website.

Please send copies of your clearances to the office as soon as you receive them. They will

be recorded and kept on file.

Academic Advisory Council met for the first time on Friday, Sept. 19th at 7:45 am in the

Sloan Library. Our guest speaker was our new SRO, Officer Dave Hanko. Officer Hanko

shared an important overview of his role in the district, district safety, Murrysville Reali-

ty Tour, and more. His phone number, in the event you have questions, is 724.327.5456,

ext. 5049. We also discussed Olweus, our school’s anti-bullying initiative. Mrs. Martz, our

Olweus coordinator, shared our building activities like Josh and Gab this month. Our next

meeting is Friday, October 17, 2014 in the Sloan Library. We have 6 parents who are

serving on the committee this year as well as a grade level teacher representative. Our

goal is to focus on issues affecting students and student achievement. Our guest speaker

in October is both Mrs. Fikejs and Ms. Wurzell, our school counselors.
