If your child is unwell please do not send them to school until they are completely over their illness and not contagious. We do not have the facility here at school to look after sick children. Last week eleven students and the classroom teacher were away with a gastro bug. These bugs are so rampant at the moment many of our usual relieving teachers are also not available because they are unwell. We would really appreciate your attention to this. Thank you. Greetings everyone, As we are refining our student absence policy, can you please ensure that your contact information is up to date. By 8.30am, can parents please have phoned the school on 4772121, Press 1, or email [email protected] as the preferred method of contact in case a teacher is absent from school or has not been able to check their messages. You need to indicate your child’s full name, room number and the reason please. If late or leaving early, students need to sign in and out, in the “Sign In / Out” book at the office, even if this has been indicated by phone. Many thanks. Choirs We would like to thank our Festival and Notables Choirs for a wonderful performance last Monday evening at school. Our teachers Meryann Kim and Vanessa Kay do a fantastic job with working with these students to entertain our families. The Notables Choir are at the Town Hall this week competing in the Kid Sing competition. We wish them well! Totara Springs 64 students travelled to Totara Springs, Matamata, for our annual sports camp last week. We earnt a first (Year 8) and third (Year 7) place!! cultural and contemporary relevance, attend lectures about aspects of Korean culture and society, and visit a local school, sharing a meal with a host family. What an exciting opportunity! Tear Fund Sponsorship We sponsor a child in Uganda named Israel. We have done this through the Tear Fund for the last eight years, since he was intermediate school age. Israel enjoys cycling, drawing and science. He lives with his Mum, three brothers and two sisters. His chores involve animal care, water carrying and child care. Last week, Roza Al-Sakini in R12 decided to raise some extra money for him by organising a Sausage Sizzle at school. We raised over $300 which we will give to him for his birthday this year on the 12th October. Thanks Roza for your wonderful initiative in supporting our friend in Africa!! On Tuesday the 8th of August, my friends and I had a Sausage Sizzle for Israel the boy our school sponsors, from Uganda, through Tear Fund. We have been sponsoring him for around 8 years and have been giving him $40 a month but I did not think this was enough. We raised $310 that is 817,711.33 Ugandan shillings. We are planning to send this to him on top of his $40 as a birthday present. We will also be fundraising more for him over the year. Roza Al-Sakini

Teacher Profile Well done to Room 15 staff member Fleur Knight who has just spent a week in Canada sharing her authentic teaching and learning experiences within the curriculum. Fleur received an award for her presentation which involved the coming together of educators from all over the world to profile safety in schools and how we are getting students involved to make a difference now and in the future. We continue our international profile-thank you Fleur!!

Student Profile Sir Peter Blake Award: My name is Ella Dorward and I am a Yr 8 student in the Rangitoto Quad. On Monday the 7th of August during our assembly I was awarded the Sir Peter Blake award for leadership. I was nominated by my Principal. Sir Peter Blake believed in the incredible potential of young kiwis to achieve great things. He knew that inspiring leaders of any age could be found in every corner of New Zealand. Sir Peter showed all of us there are leaders and there are dreamers. Leaders make things happen. Dreamers have a vision. The truly special people do both. To think that I have been selected for such an award was a very exciting moment for me. I had heard of the award before as I remember being a Year 7 and watching Danielle Ouwehand receive this same award in 2016. I knew Danielle through Dancesport and she was certainly someone that I felt led by example and I enjoyed watching her contributions to MBIS through the Strategic Planning Team. As a leader for Murrays Bay in 2017, I hope that I can inspire others to always do their very best and enjoy every moment of their time at Murrays Bay. I encourage all students to get involved, be brave and try new things. Sir Peter Blake was the world’s most celebrated yachtsman. Amongst his many achievements in his 30 year career, he defended the biggest sailing prize of all, the America’s Cup. The thing that he did that inspires me the most is the way he was able to bring together teams of people to achieve amazing outcomes. I am still very much learning leadership skills but I hope that during my time here at MBIS I too am helping bring teams of people together to achieve great things. We are extremely proud of you Ella!! Kind regards from Shannon Robinson Relieving Principal

During the week from the 7th to 11th of August, Murrays Bay Intermediate competed at their annual sports camp in Matamata. We took away two teams of 32 students each; a 'Sharks' team composed of year 8 students and our 'Dolphins' team, composed of year 7s. The week involved competing in a range of sports, with each student involved in roughly 6 different sporting codes. It was a physically and mentally demanding week, yet the students achieved a huge level of success against all challenges. Sports camp finished on Friday with the Sharks placed first overall and the Dolphins team finishing 3rd.

On Wednesday, 9th of August Murrays Bay Intermediate fielded four teams at the North Shore Chess Club chess tournament at Wairau Intermediate School. All four teams did the school proud. Behaviour was exemplary and attitudes were superb. In addition to these positive aspects of the day, Team A took out the tournament, winning by a considerable margin, the first time since 2009. We are all very proud of all of our participants. It was a great day!
