MURMUR: ARCTIC REALITIES

The Museum is excited to open the first new exhibition of 2018 this Saturday when we host the

international debut of Murmur: Arctic Realities, the creation of one of the world’s leading

contemporary artists, John Grade. Using salvaged Alaskan yellow cedar, Grade has created an

intricately carved sculpture (15’ x 38’ x 42’) that represents a pingo, a hill of ice that grows over

centuries in the Arctic’s highest latitudes, then collapses, pockmarking the tundra. This

sculpture simulates a pingo in Alaska’s Noatak National Preserve, mapped by the artist using

photogrammetry. Visitors will not only witness the pingo’s impressive scale, but will be able to

enter inside the sculpture as its walls open and close, mimicking the hill’s life cycle.

In addition to the sculpture, a key part of the experience is a mixed reality component using

Microsoft’s HoloLens technology. Grade is projecting the surface of the pingo and the

surrounding area onto the sculpture and gallery so that visitors can view and literally walk

through the digital projection by donning the headset. There are only a few museums in the

world who are presently utilizing this kind of technology in an exhibition. Murmur is being

tour. It will be here through April 22. To learn more, there is a wealth of content regarding the exhibition online:

As always, we encourage staff and volunteers to share their experience with Murmur on their

social media channels. Our Facebook page has an album chronicling the construction process in

Why Murmur? Some of you have asked why Mystic Seaport is hosting this exhibition and how it fits into our

mission. Murmur seeks to explore new methods of engagement with exhibitions and our

environment through contemporary art, craft, and immersive technology. We hope the

experience of this exhibition will inspire people to think differently about the Arctic, one of the

least populated regions of the earth, and the impact of time upon the life cycle of a pingo--and by

extension our own world.

Murmur represents a natural feature within the largest undisturbed watershed in the US. It is an

American maritime subject in the extreme, not the least because pingos are inherently dependent

on water to form. John Grade describes the waterlogged landscape he traversed as a marine

environment and Mystic Seaport is excited to bring a sense of this little-visited part of our nation

to our visitors.

Page 3: MURMUR: ARCTIC REALITIES - Mystic Seaport · international debut of Murmur: Arctic Realities, the creation of one of the world’s leading contemporary artists, John Grade. Using

Staff and volunteers are invited to attend a talk and presentation by new media artist Reilly Donovan, designer of the mixed reality experience in the new exhibition, Murmur: Arctic Realities, in which visitors can virtually explore the unusual textures, flora, and fauna of a precise geographic location 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Reilly works with emerging technology to produce interactive installations, virtual reality artworks and augmented reality exhibits. His work explores how computer simulations, machine learning, and interactive environments challenge the boundaries of our senses. It examines how machines are molding our future, changing our culture, and confronting our perceptions of reality. Reilly will discuss his collaborations with contemporary artist John Grade, Microsoft’s HoloLens technology, and mixed reality content contextualized within an art experience.

Free with Museum Admission and to Museum Members, Volunteers and Staff

2017 ANNUAL FUND

I am delighted to share that Mystic Seaport set a new record for the Annual Fund, raising the highest amount in the history of the Museum ($1,818,000). And, but for the timing of two major gifts, we would have surpassed our goal by $37,000. Still, we exceeded our 2016 Annual Fund total by $130,000! Many thanks to Board Chair Barclay Collins, Advancement Committee Chair Grant Cambridge, the rest of the trustees, and to all of you! Fundraising is indeed a “team sport,” and virtually every department and every person in this Museum helped us achieve this record. Thank you so very much for all you do day in and day out to further advance the mission of Mystic Seaport and in the process, for helping us build philanthropic support that is so critical to our success. With great appreciation, -Betsy Bowman, Director Annual Fund

2018 MALLORY INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM DEADLINE JANUARY 31, 2018

I am pleased to announce that proposals are now being accepted for the 2018 Mallory

International Exchange Fellowship Program. The Mallory Exchange Fellowship will be used for

professional international exchange at a foreign museum, library, historic site, or other

educational institution for research and study purposes. The Mallory Endowment was established in 1993 by Wade and Angela Thompson to honor

Clifford and Pauline Mallory for their many years of service to Mystic Seaport. The stated

purpose of the fund is “...to create an international exchange program between the Seaport and

other institutions...” The intent is that one year an international scholar, in any discipline related to Mystic Seaport’s

mission, will come to the Museum for study and research purposes; in alternate years, a Mystic

Seaport staff member will visit a foreign museum for study and research purposes.

A number of staff exchanges have taken place since the inception of the fund, with the first

exchange taking place with Hobson Wharf, Maritime Museum of Auckland, New Zealand, in

honor of Mrs. Mallory’s native country.

Proposal Guidelines: The Proposal should be submitted by a Mystic Seaport staff member to travel to another site for

research or other specific study purposes at a foreign museum, library, historic site, or other

educational institution.

The submitter of the successful proposal(s) will have the general responsibilities of any project

manager -- to ensure that funds are spent according to the approved budget, and to prepare a 1-2

page narrative project report at the conclusion of the project, which the Advancement Office may

forward to the donor. Funds are available to fund one or more projects (total funding for the Fellowship Program not to

exceed $8,500).

Each proposal must contain: - Project Title - Title Page including name and signature of staff member, department director, and vice

president sponsoring the proposal.

Page 7: MURMUR: ARCTIC REALITIES - Mystic Seaport · international debut of Murmur: Arctic Realities, the creation of one of the world’s leading contemporary artists, John Grade. Using

- Project Abstract (1-2 page maximum) including goals and intended outcomes of the project,

description of the resources to be researched, and names of colleagues for consultation. - A letter of support from the foreign institution. - Project Budget indicating proposed budget period and detailed breakdown of expenses not

to exceed $8,500 per project. - Proposed exchange timeframe and schedule. - Applicant resume. Due date is January 31, 2018. Send proposals to Jeanne Gade, Director of Human Resources, for

transmittal to Mallory Fellowship Selection Committee for review. Late submissions will not be

accepted. Proposal Evaluation and Selection: Proposals will be evaluated by the Selection Committee on a number of different criteria, with

the overriding factor being the relationship of proposed activities to the advancement of Mystic

Seaport’s mission and strategic initiatives. The top 3 proposals may be shared with the donors for

their involve-ment and input prior to making the final selection. Selections will be announced in

early March, 2016.
