The producers of Pirates of the Pacific hosted a VIP gala event for their upcoming movie release. ‘Pirates of the Pacific’ was a multi-million dollar budgeted movie and thrilling pirate adventure starring Cap’n Jack as the rum-toting pirate Captain ‘Cap’n Jack’ and Kayla Nightly as a prim and proper heiress and wannabe pirate, Elizabeth Flamingo. The producers invited the top paparazzi-provoking personalities of Hollywood to attend this special unannounced VIP premiere to promote additional media hype for the movie. The guests arrived on the red carpet and were greeted with cocktails and appetizers. Most of the celebrities already knew each other and so they participated in a fun challenge of having the most money at the end of the night’s events while avoiding the notorious Fed-X who can siphon your money like no other! After mingling about and getting caught up on all of the latest Hollywood gossip, the guests underwent a fun ‘What Movie Star Am I?’ challenge. Then, a delectable star-worthy dinner was served while they worked on a challenge called ‘Writers, Directors, Producers and Actors.’ Given a premise, the stars had to write, direct, produce and act out their own skits that they created during dinner! They laughed at each other tremendously…that is….until one of the guests was murdered! To minimize the negative press surrounding a murder case, the guests decided to rally together to figure out ‘whodunit’ calling the police. The exciting investigation lasted a while as the guests mingled and collected information from each other. Some pieced together the crime with no problem while others were way off base! Then, one by one, the guests came clean with their involvement, if any, with the crime…and the thief confessed! To top off the night, the guests participated in a ‘Movie Production Charades’ Challenge. Overall, the movie premiere was a success and it was the place to be in all of Hollywood!

This mystery is a light-hearted and comical mystery that allows you and your guests to step into a different character while trying to solve the entertaining mystery. The party can be a huge success as long as you and your guests relax and let the mystery unravel during each round. The party pack (this document) needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues and stuff them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate round and character for each round of the party. It is optimal to choose different colored envelopes for each round.

HOW TO PLAY A MYSTERY GUEST INSTRUCTIONS

Professional actors are great for mysteries but do not worry because you do not have to be a good actor – or an actor at all – to play a mystery! The only quality that you need to possess is the ability to have a blast! The mystery party is separated into 3 rounds. During the party, you will be handed an envelope that contains the clues necessary for your character for the round. The clues will provide everything that you will need to solve the mystery. However, during the investigation segment of the game, you will need to ask the right questions and pay close attention to other guests’ clues to be able to get the whole picture of what has happened.

GAME. until the end! Undoubtedly, your host has cast you into a character that you are comfortable playing. There are some characters that are designed to be played more reserved than other characters that should be played more boisterous. Feel free to play your role however you feel comfortable. Feel free to embellish your character’s personality if you would like. However, if you are feeling more reserved tonight, you can opt to allow the other characters to approach you or you can simply listen in on others’ conversations to get your information. Not everyone needs to or should have the spotlight!

ROUND ONE ROUND CLUES Cut out these clues and stuff them into envelopes that are labeled with the appropriate character’s name. If you choose to do the side game ‘The Money Game’ – be sure to include the

money for each character into these envelopes. Handing out these envelopes begins round one.

ROUND TWO – DINNER HOUR Get ready for the show…oh NO!

Pair your guests into teams of 2-3. Begin the ‘Writers, Producers, Directors and Actors’ (page 46) game while you serve dinner (optional). The teams should sit together during the meal and plan out their skits. When they are finished eating, give them 10 minutes to rehearse before performing the skit. (See the activity instructions on page 46).

Movie: Gladiator Description: A dysfunctional, ill-mannered romance novelist Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson), who suffers from an obsessive-compulsive disorder, enjoys his talent of offending people. Movie: As Good as it Gets CLUES TO REVEAL DURING THIS ROUND During this round, mingle with the guest and discuss the following information with whomever you choose:

o Multiple clues for each character that are to be revealed are here within the purchased game. o You sense tension between a few people here at the VIP Premiere Party. Maybe you should spend some time

paying close attention to other people’s conversations to see what is going on. PERSONAL CLUES TO CONCEAL

o Personal clues for each character are here. During the mystery, your character must be honest and not make up any potentially mystery-altering clues in addition to those provided to you. You do not, however, have to share the clues that you collect with other guests.

Once the victim makes the announcement according to their clue card, the guests should pair up into investigative teams - but different combinations than the last challenge. (Pairing of guests is optional, but it adds a layer of collaboration to the mystery as not all guests are given the same clues or may have collected the same clues.) Encourage the paired teams to implement their clues and share truthful information and opinions that they have gathered. This part of the investigation should take about 15 minutes. At the conclusion of this round, give the guests a time period in which to fill in their final guesses as to whodunit on the ' Mystery Investigation Sheet' (page 34) or any type of ballot you decide to use. Collect the guess sheets from your guests at the conclusion of this round. PROP LIST: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready!

• Stand by Barzan and agree with him - in one word sentences - that the food on the party trays is too easy and that you, like Barzan, would prefer to hunt for your food. Ask around to see if anyone knows what kind of animals run wild in the mansion.

• Tell Barzan that you’d love to go hunting with him in the mansion. • Since there is a lot going on at the party…you might want to listen in on a few conversations first. Even if you

HOST INSTRUCTIONS: After you collect the Mystery Investigation Sheets, allow the guests to one at a time accuse who they believe the murderer is and tell them to include the motive and means in their speech.

After the accusation round, pass out the round three envelopes to your guests and have them sit in a circle or semi-circle in order to be able to see guests as they read their solution cards one at a time to the group. At this time, serve dessert and coffee/after dinner drinks.

GAME. ROUND THREE SOLUTION CARDS Cut these out and put them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate character name. Seal the envelopes. Handing out these envelopes signify the beginning of the final solution round.

CHARACTER NAME IS HERE– FINAL SOLUTION ROUND THREE. READ AFTER CHARACTER NAME IS HERE. This is the final solution round. Every guest at this party will now tell their story to the group - in a specific order dictated by this final solution clue card - and the will now confess.

Before you read your solution to the group, give everyone the following challenge. Say one movie at a time and the first one to guess the correct actor/actress…WINS! PROPOSED TIMELINE FOR THE PARTY – GIVEN THAT ALL OPTIONAL GAMES ARE PLAYED: 7:00 PM: Guests arrive, have their pictures made on the red carpet and receive a cocktail and appetizers, the guest instructions and a character list to review. 7:20 PM: The host goes over the instructions for the mystery game as well as the money game. 7:30 PM: The Round One envelopes are handed out and the game begins. The guests mingle and implement their ice-breakers and reveal clues on their clue cards. 8:00 PM: The optional game ‘What Movie Character Am I?’ game is played. (15 minutes) 8:15 PM: Guests are paired into teams and dinner is served. The movie scripts for the required ‘Writers, Producers, Directors and Actors’ game are assigned and the guests have dinner and plan their skits. (Dinner is optional – appetizers / snacks can be served.) 8:35 PM: Rehearsal for the ‘Writers, Producers, Directors and Actors’ game skits. 8:45 PM: The skits are performed for the group and the host judges. 8:55 PM: The Round Two envelopes are handed out and the investigation of the crime begins. The mystery investigation sheets are handed out. 9:25 PM: The investigation sheets are taken up by the host and the guests make their accusations of whodunit 9:30 PM: Dessert and coffee are served and the Round Three envelopes are handed out to the guests. The guests sit in a circle and one-by-one, the solutions are revealed by each of the guests. 9:40 PM: The game ‘Quiet on the set! The Movie Production Charades’ is played. (20 minutes) 10:00 PM: The party is over – time for the host to RELAX! **Without playing the optional games, the mystery will end around 9:30ish.
