Centuries after its construction, the Great

Wall of China remains one of humankind’s engineer-

ing marvels. At over 21,000 kilometres in length, the Wall is a trip in itself. The

Beijing-to-Beijing route will take you to small

villages that have stood for centuries in the shadow of this massive tribute to

human will, and introduce you to the cuisine, culture and history that make this

one of China’s most captivating attractions.

A tranquil oasis of peace and methodical Confucian design in one of China’s busiest urban landscapes, the 267-hectare Temple of Heaven Park is encompassed by a long wall with a gate at each compass point. Although not strictly speaking a temple – the Chinese name means ‘Altar of Heaven’, so don’t expect burning incense or worshippers – it originally served as a vast stage for solemn rites performed by the Son of Heaven (a title bestowed on the emperor of the time), who prayed here for good harvests and sought divine clearance and atonement.

Forbidden CiTyRinged by a 52m-wide moat at the very heart of Běijīng, the Forbidden City is China’s largest and best-preserved collection of ancient buildings, and the largest palace complex in the world. So called because it was off limits for 500 years, when it was steeped in stultifying ritual and Byzantine regal protocol, the otherworldly palace was the reclusive home to two dynasties of imperial rule until the Republic overthrew the last Qing emperor.

Today, the Forbidden City is prosaically known as the Palace Museum, although most Chinese people simply call it gùgōng.

Hutong alleysHutongs are the old traditional alleyways and courtyard homes which once covered all Beijing. Many still survive today and are pleasant to walk or bike through. Not much has changed and one can see how people lived in the past.

The tour starts with a cycle rickshaw ride through the hutongs. Cycle rickshaws are a traditional means of transportation in the old narrow streets. It takes you into a traditional family courtyard home. The family will greet you, serve tea and show you through their home, while exploring the cultural and historic significance of various aspects.

Jade facTOryDuring the Shang Dynasty (1600 B.C. to 1050 B.C), jade was used for personal adornment by kings, which means royal and power. In Zhou and Han dynasties, jade was used in burial rituals because it is immortal, to put in the mouth of the dead, which believed to delay the decomposition of the body. A record from a 200 A.D Chinese dictionary defines jade as the fairest stone, and endowed with five virtues, which are charity, rectitude, wisdom, courage and equity. Students will learn how Jade is extracted and carved, while understanding its significance in Chinese culture and Feng Shui.
