It is that time of the year again when the attentions of many of the clubs in Munster Ladies Football turn to preparing for the Munster Club 7’s competition on June 23rd in association with Scally’s Super Valu and the Quality hotel in Clonakilty. This is the third year for the tournament but the second time for the event to be held in the fantastic setting of Clonakilty GAA club. Last year 37 teams in total participated in the event with separate competitions for Junior, Intermediate and Senior teams. The quality of the coordination on the day, facilities for playing and catering and support from the key sponsor Eugene Scally makes this event one of the highlights on the ladies football calendar. Invited guests Porick Murray and Sean Kilgannon from Sligo Ladies delivered a fantastic presentation on the 2011 Sligo Ladies Development Squad Programme. Following an opportunity for questions and answers great debate and discussion took place in relation to best practice when planning, delivering player development programmes at under 13, 15 and 17. Player Development programmes (formally known as Development Squads) have been in place in Munster for a number of years and the sharing of ideas and expertise at the forum will ensure the continued improvement in areas of planning, communication with players and coaching for the coming year. If you are interested in finding out more about the Player Development Programme in your county please contact your development officer (details below). UPDATE FROM DEVELOPMENT OFFICERS: Each edition one county development officer will give a brief outline of development activities in their county. First up it is the turn of Cork and Mags Mc Evoy: I took over the role of Development Officer in Sept 2011. I had previously been involved in player development and welcomed the idea of playing a larger part in the area of development within the county, however, I was surprised to discover just how broad the area of “Development” was within the game. In October we set up a Development Committee. This consisted of the Development Officer, assistant development officers for the five key areas and a development delegate representing each of our four divisions. This has proved to be a very successful part of Cork Ladies Football development as it provides a clear structure and divides out workloads and responsibilities. The biggest challenge we have met to date is trying to change the mindset of people regarding participation in the coach education programme. As an association we need to highlight the importance of quality coaching, this starts with coaches at club level. Due to the work of the Development Committee and our Divisional Boards, since January Cork have successfully rolled out 7 FUNdamentals Coaching Courses, 2 Grab your Whistle courses and the Club Officers Programme where we had 175 people in attendance. Our key aims for 2012 : Continue with our coach and referee education programme. Last week Munster Ladies hosted their first ever Player Development Forum, aimed at addressing areas such as the key objectives of the programme and also the introduction of a planning phase for the programme. The Munster counties have been among the leaders in the area of Player Development (development Squads) in recent years and following the very successful forum this trend is likely to continue. The term Player Development has evolved from the emphasis for this programme being on the development of the player regardless of ability and not on an elite squad. Munster Ladies were honoured to welcome Sean Kilgannon and Porick Murray who were the 2011

Sligo Under 13 and Under 15 Development Squad coordinators. They delivered an inspirational case study on how Sligo Ladies implemented the Development Squad Programme in 2011. Their enthusiasm, professionalism and attention to detail certainly gave all in attendance some food for thought. The story of how Sligo achieved numbers in excess of 150 between their Under 13 and Under 15 programme and the subsequent benefits to the players and clubs in the county set a perfect platform for the remainder of the event last Thursday. Over the course of the evening all counties in attendance worked together to develop the mission statement or objectives of the Munster Player

Development Programme for the coming year. In addition a generic pre-programme planning document was agreed by all for use by the counties. The principle theme reverberating from the whole event was the notion that this programme has to be all-inclusive; parents, players, clubs, coaches, county board and facilities in order for it to be a success and this inclusiveness was very evident from the case study presented by the Sligo representatives. The Munster counties will now move forward with increased vigour to begin planning for under 13, under 15 and under 17 player development programmes in the later part of the year.

17pts 2gls 9ptsThe inaugural Jim Kennedy Cup Final played in University of Limerick was a game of epic quality by two teams who wanted to play football. The game had everything passing movements, scores and skill.The match started at an explosive pace with UL the running and in their first attack scored a goal through Aine Tighe, straight form the kick out Aine won the ball and kicked over a point. Cork settled into their game but UL backs were putting pressure on the Cork Forwards and they could not find a way through to score. Nollaig Cleary found some space and managed to kick over a point, again after some good work by Cork Midfielders Ciara O Sullivan scored another point this seemed to settle the team and they had UL under pressure and only for a great save by Edel Murphy in the UL goal from Nollaig Cleary this game could have been over as a contest as Cork were well on top all over the field however the forwards failed to convert the chances into scores. Breige Corkery showed the forwards the way by scoring a point after a great solo run, at this stage it seemed that Cork were having it all their own way as UL were finding it difficult to get the ball into the Cork half. UL however did not panic and worked their way back into the game and with Aine Tighe causing problems for the Cork defence began to get find their rhythm had point through Niamh Richardson and Niamh O Dea, the Cork backs began to come to grips with the forwards and with each of the backs covering for each other were able to close UL down and block their way to goal.Geraldine O Flynn scored a point for Cork quickly followed by a similar score from Ciara O Sullivan. The Cork forwards were now playing well and Rhona Buckley scored another point, Cork were well on top at this stage and AGAIN Edel Murphy came to the rescue of UL with a great save from Nollaig Cleary, Annie Walsh who was covering an amount of ground at midfield scored another point from Cork.Edel Murphy again came to the rescue of UL with another great save this time from Rhona Buckley

Grace Buckley picked up the clearance to point for Cork. This left the score at half time 11pts to 1g 4pts in favour of CorkUL came out of the blocks running at the start of the second of the second half and scored 2points through Aine Tighe and Niamh O Dea,Grace Kearney had a point for Cork scores were now hard to come by as both sets of backs were playing well and keeping the forwards in check Geraldine O Flynn came to Cork’s rescue with a great point, this score however had the effect of waking UL and with Gillian O Connor coming into her own with some great fielding and forcing the Cork backs to foul her however UL could not convert the chances, Niamh O Dea scored a great goal for UL the game was now in the melting pot Cork then shifted up a gear and with Juliet Murphy making an outlet for the Cork backs and feeding the forwards Cork were denied a goal by the upright and with Aisling Hutchings playing well for UL in defence with her attacking runs set UL up for another point by Eimear Considine. The Cork goal was now under pressure and only for a great block by Norita Kelly UL would have had a goal Eimear Considine scored another point for UL. UL were then delivered a blow when they had a player yellow carded and this gave the momentum back

to Cork and with Geraldine O Flynn scoring 2pts for Cork however UL refused to give up and again the Cork goal came under pressure and only for Breige Corkery making a great block from Niamh O Dea denied UL the goal they required Breige Corkery then made her way up the field and scored a great point.Cork now forced UL to shoot from out the field with the balls dropping into Elaine Harte in the Cork goal.Niamh O Dean then had a point for UL to leave only 2 points between the sides in the final minutes left us with an exciting couple of minutes. The Cork defence refused to yield and Cork held out to win by 2pts. Geraldine O Flynn with her 6 points and her work ethic around the field was player of the match.Cork Elaine Harte; Anne Marie Walsh;Deidre O Reilly Rena Buckley; Breige Corkery;Brid Stack;Aine Sheehan; Norita Kelly;Annie Walsh; Juliet Murphy;Ciar O Sullivan;Geraldine O Flynn; Nollaig Cleary;Rhona Buckley;Grace KearneyUL Edel Murphy; Aisling Hutchings;Sarah TierneyFabienne Cooney; Beulah McManus; Aislng Leonard;Orlagh Heavy; Lorraine Scanlon; Laura O Sullivan; Edith Carroll; Eimear Considine; Claire Keohane Aine Tighe; Gillian O Connor; Niamh O Dea;

Kinnegad Gaelic grounds saw the latest chapter of ladies Gaelic football unfold on Saturday January 21st with the staging of the inaugural Post Primary Interprovincial schools competition. All four prov-inces participated in a blitz type format with Munster and Connacht qualifying for the Cup final. Once again the Southern province showed the way defeat-ing Connacht, Ulster, Leinster and Connacht again in the final and along the way played some tremendous football making them worthy and deserving winners. The team looked resplendent in a playing strip sponsored by Azzurri Sport and they left no stone unturned with their preparation. A panel of players was first assembled after a number of trial games followed by a challenge game over the Christmas holidays with UCC. They travelled up to Westmeath on the Friday evening courtesy of generous spon-sorship provided by Philip & Kris Lam proprietors of “Café De Four Seas” and reaped the benefits of re-ally good preparation the following day as right from the throw in, in the opening game against Connacht they produced a brilliant brand of football which they maintained to the very end of the tournament.The first game kicked off on pitch 1 at 11am op-ponents Connacht and Munster playing against a strong wind won the throw in setting up an early at-tack and went on to win 5-05 to 1-04 with the scores coming from Aileen Wall 2-01, Jennifer Barry 1-00, Hannah Landers 1-00, Doireann O Sullivan 0-04, Leanne Mangan 1-00.Game 2 again on pitch 1 at 12 noon opponents Ulster and Munster with the strong wind, again winning the throw in ran out winners 3-04 to 1-02 and the scorers Fiona Morrissey 1-00, Doireann O Sullivan 1-01, Leanne Mangan 1-00, Jennifer Barry,

Anna Galvin, Hannah Landers 0-01 eachGame 3 on pitch 1 at 1pm against the home province of Leinster, throw in winners, again supplying the at-tack with the necessary ammunition to win the final game of the group 2-05 to 0-04 and set up a cup final with Connacht. Scorers Clodagh Walsh 1-01, Fiona Morrissey 1-00, Doireann O Sullivan 0-03, Aileen Wall 0-01Cup final moved to pitch 2 and Munster played with the slight wind advantage against Connacht and the midfield pairing won the throw in as they did all through the tournament. A hard fought first half had Munster 1-03 to 1-00 ahead with Aileen Wall the goal scorer. The second half saw a much improved per-formance from the Southern province and goals from Leanne Mangan x 2, Fiona Morrissey and Jennifer Barry along with 3 points from Doireann O Sullivan and at the final whistle winners 5-05 to 1-01. Scor-ers Aileen Wall 1-02, Leanne Mangan 2-00, Fiona Morrissey & Jennifer Barry 1-00 each, Doireann O Sullivan 0-03.A proud Munster Captain Megan O Connell who was majestic throughout the tournament accepted the Cup from President Pat Quill to scenes of joy and jubilation and the Munster presentations were not yet finished as Aileen Wall was presented with the player of the tournament to crown a superb Munster performance. Throughout all 4 games Munster played outstand-ing football with a tremendous work ethos and the strength of the panel was reflected as substitutes were made and the level of performance was main-tained. All 24 players contributed handsomely to this victory and displayed tremendous team work along the way. The team management of Maire Halvey,

Dan Cannon, Dave Daly and Derry Peters along with team physio Brendan Kirrane were justifiably proud of this excellent group of players. The contribution of Dan O Mahony also deserves to be recorded, Dan was actively involved in the trials and the challenge game and all though out of the Country for the com-petition he kept in constant touch with proceedings.This was the first staging of the event and it clearly showed that this competition has a bright future.Munster scored 15-19 and conceded 3-11 in four games with the Munster scorers as follows: Doire-ann O Sullivan 1-11(6f), Aileen Wall 3-04, Leanne Mangan 4-00, Fiona Morrissey 3-00, Jennifer Barry 2-01, Hannah Landers 1-01, Clodagh Walsh 1-01, Anna Galvin 0-01 Panel: Jean O Sullivan St Mary’s Macroom, Katie O Sullivan Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, Ciara Murphy Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne , Eilis Dillon Colaiste Ide agus Iosef, Karen McGrath Presentation Clon-mel, Treasa McGrath Loreto Clonmel, Maire O Cal-laghan St Mary’s Mallow, Megan O Connell Colaiste Na Sceilge Captain, Fiona Morrissey St Augustine’s, Aileen Wall Presentation Clonmel , Jennifer Barry Loreto Fermoy, Anna Galvin Colaiste Na Sceilge , Hannah Landers Blackwater CS, Doireann O Sulli-van St Mary’s Mallow , Roisin Howley Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon, Sinead Grant Loreto Clonmel, Maeve Flynn Colaiste Choilm, Roisin Rouine Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon , Shauna Harvey Kilkee CC, Emma Coakley St Mary’s Mallow, Clodagh Walsh Black-water CS , Katie O Dea Pobalscoil Sliabh Luachra Rathmore, Laura Sheeran Colaiste Ide agus Iosef, Leanne Mangan Colaiste Ide agus IosefManagement: Dan O Mahony, Maire Halvey, Dan Cannon, Dave Daly, Derry Peters & Brendan Kirrane
