The New TRC President My heartiest greetings to all Members, Affiliate Leaders and their

members.

First and foremost, let me thank Dr R Theyvendran for his contributions

as TRC’s President from July 2000 to September 2016.

During the past 16 years he has done a wonderful task of consolidating

TRC, bringing in more members and Affiliates, increasing our funds

and creating a closer relationship with many of our community

organisations like SINDA, Tamil Language Council, LISHA, and

Narpani. Under his leadership TRC has organised many key events

like the launch of the first local made Tamil movie – ‘Gurushetram’,

75th anniversary celebrations of Tamil Murasu, multiple National Day

Dinners which has raised more than $200,000 over the years and other

activities. In addition, TRC has also introduced some young

professionals into the Management Council.

In September 2016, Dr Theyvendran stepped down as the President

to ensure leadership continuity and to allow the younger generation

opportunities to lead TRC into the future.

The Management Council has since, unanimously elected me to lead

the organization. Having served as the General Secretary for more

than 20 years, I hope that the experience gained will guide me in

carrying out my responsibilities as the President and set an example

to the younger generation. I am also thankful to Dr N R Govinden and

Mr R Balan who have also stepped down as Vice Presidents to give

way to someone younger. Currently half the Council is in the early 50s

or in their 40s. My target is to identify and groom even younger leaders

and prepare them to take over in the next 5 years.

Some of the immediate targets that we (Management Council) are

looking at:

1. Increasing the number of Affiliates from 35 to 40.

2. Increasing Life Membership to more than 500.

3. Creating a pool of Volunteers who can be tapped upon to be

involved in TRC activities.

4. Identifying young Tamil speaking professionals and bringing them

into the various sub-committees and creating opportunities for

them to serve the community.

5. Reaching out and strengthening the relationship with current

Affiliates and Partners.

6. Organising more relevant activities for Students, Parents, and

Working adults.

I am confident that with the continued support of you (members), our

Affiliates and Partners, we can achieve all the above.

This year (2016) marks the 65th anniversary of TRC. Plans are

underway to mark our 70th anniversary on a grand scale and also to

come up with an effective action plan to bring TRC into the next lap.

Together, let us strive to make TRC a more viable and vibrant

organization representing all our Tamil speaking brothers and sisters

in Singapore.

கடந்த 16 ஆண்டுகளில் அவர் பல சாதனைகள் புரிந்து பபரனவனை ஓர் உைர்ந்த நினலக்கு ககாண்டு வந்துள்ளார். அவரின் தனலனையில் உறுப்பிைர் எண்ணிக்னகயும் இனை அனைப்புனகளின் எண்ணிக்னகயும் உைர்ந்தது. பபரனவயின் நிதி நினலனையும் அதிகரித்துள்ளது. பைலும் பல முக்கிை அனைப்புகளுடைாை உறவுகள் வலுப்பட்டை.

இனளைர்களுக்கு வழி விடும் வனகயிலும் அடுத்த தனலமுனற தனலனைத்துவத்னத ககாண்டு வரவும் டாக்டர் பதபவந்திரன் கடந்த கசப்டம்பரில், பபரனவயின் தனலவர் பதவியிலிருந்து விலகி தற்கபாழுது உடைடி முன்ைாள் தனலவராக உள்ளார்.

பைலாண்னைக் குழுவின் முழு ஆதரபவாடு நான் புதிை தனலவராக பதர்ந்கதடுக்கப்பட்டுள்பளன். கடந்த 20 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் பைலாக பபரனவயின் கபாதுச் கசைலாளராக இருந்து இப்கபாழுது தனலவர் பதவிக்கு வந்துள்பளன். பபரனவயுடைாை, எைது நீண்ட கால அனுபவம், பபரனவனை பைலும் வளர்ச்சி அனடை உதவும் எை நம்புகிபறன். இன்னும் பல இனளைர்கனள அனடைாளம் கண்டு பபரனவயின் தனலனைத்துவ கபாறுப்புகளில் அவர்கனள அைர்த்தி, பல ஆக்ககரைாை திட்டங்கனள கசைல்படுத்துவபத எைது முக்கிை குறிக்பகாளாகும்.

உறுப்பிைர்கள் ைற்றும் இனை அனைப்புகளின் ஆதரவுடன், கதாடர்ந்து பபரனவனை தமிழர்களின் பிரதிநிதித்துவ அனைப்பாக ககாண்டு வர ஆவை கசய்பவாம்.

தமிழர் பேரவை அவைைருக்கும் தங்களின் இனிய புத்தாண்டு நல்ைாழ்த்துக்கவை ததரிவித்துக்தகாள்கிறது

International Maanavar Muzhakkam 2016 International Maanavar Muzhakkam is an annual oratorical cum

debating competition organized by Astro Vaanavil, an Indian language

channel in Malaysia and Vanakkam Malaysia, an online daily Tamil

news site in Malaysia.

Tamils Representative Council (TRC) with the support of Tamil

Language Learning and Promotion Committee under the auspices of

the Ministry of Education is the coordinator for identifying students

who can represent Singapore in this competition.

To select the Singapore representatives, TRC organized a national

level competition amongst primary school students. More than 100

participated in the preliminary rounds. 10 students progressed to the

semi-finals and 4 students advanced to the finals. The Top 3 students

were selected to represent Singapore.

They will be accompanied by their parents and 2 TRC officials. TRC

அவைத்துைக ோணைர் முழக்கம் 2016 அஸ்டபரா வாைவில், வைக்கம் ைபலசிைா ஆகிைனவ ஏற்பாட்டில் பபச்சும் விவாதமும் கலந்த பபாட்டிைாக அனைத்துலக ைாைவர் முழக்கம் ஆண்டுபதாறும் நனடகபறுகிறது.

கல்வி அனைச்சின் தமிழ்கைாழி கற்றல் வளர்ச்சிக்குழுவின் ஆதரபவாடு, தமிழர் பபரனவ இப்பபாட்டிக்காை சிங்கப்பூர் பிரதிநிதிகனளத் பதர்ந்கதடுக்க ஓருங்கினைப்பாளராக உள்ளது.

2015-ல் கசன்னையில் நடந்த பபாட்டியில் விஷ்ணுவர்த்தினி 3-ஆம் இடத்னத பிடித்து நைக்கு கபருனை பதடி தந்தார். வாழ்த்துக்கள்!

2016-ல் சிங்கப்பூர் பிரதிநிதிகனள அனடைாளம் காை பதசிை அளவிலாை பபாட்டி நடத்தப்பட்டது. இதில் நூற்றுக்கு பைற்பட்ட கதாடக்க நினல ைாைவர்கள் பங்பகற்றைர். சிறந்த 3 ைாைவர்கள் டிகசம்பரில் துபாயில் பபாட்டியிடவிருக்கின்றைர்.

TRC Bursary Awards 2017 – 7 Jan 2017 Tamils Representative Council (TRC) is dedicated to ensuring every

Tamil child born in Singapore is not deprived of education merely

because of financial difficulties. Educating our young to open them to

new opportunities is a communal duty each of us carries.

TRC together with SINDA and Singapore Indian Education Trust has

been presenting bursaries to needy Indian students for the past 10

years. The 3 main organizations have come together to ensure that

our lesser-privileged students are not lacking in motivation and

financial support in their efforts to educate themselves and be a better

citizen. Further, such cooperation will ensure that more students

benefit and better management of our limited resources.

In 2017, TRC will be presenting bursaries to more than 100 primary

school students. This event will be held on Saturday, 7 Jan at Umar

Pulavar Tamil Language Centre. Each year the number of applicants

and the amount to be awarded keeps increasing and TRC has to

strive harder to raise funds.

To allow for the community to contribute towards this noble

effort, TRC has introduced a nominee programme whereby

members can donate a certain amount (minimum $1000 x 5

years) in the name of a loved one as nominated by the donor.

Donors could donate in the name of their parents, children etc. To

date, we have a number of such donors.

தமிழர் பேரவை கல்வி நிதி உதவி 2017 கடந்த 10 ஆண்டுகளாக தமிழர் பபரனவயும் சிண்டாவும் சிங்கப்பூர் இந்திை கல்வி அறக்கட்டனளயும் இனைந்து இந்திை ைாைவர்களுக்கு கல்வி நிதி உதவினை வழங்கி வருகின்றை.

2017-ல் நூற்றுக்கு பைற்பட்ட கதாடக்க நினல ைாைவர்கள் கல்வி நிதி உதவினைப் கபறுகிறார்கள். ஒவ்கவாரு ஆண்டும் விண்ைப்பங்களும் நிதித்கதானகயும் அதிகரித்து வருகின்றை. ஆனகைால், தமிழர் பபரனவ நிதி திரட்ட அதிக முைற்சிகனள எடுக்கிறது.

இந்த முைற்சியில் நைது சமூகம் னகக்பகார்த்து கசைல்பட இபதா ஒரு வாய்ப்பு. உறுப்பிைர்கள் தங்கள் அன்புக்குரிைவர்களின் கபைரில் நன்ககானட (குனறந்த பட்சம் $1,000 x 5 ஆண்டுகள்) வழங்கலாம். முன்வந்து ஆதரவளிக்க அனைவனரயும் அனழக்கிபறாம்!

Sorpor 2017 Sorpor is the National Tamil Debate series for Primary Schools

organised biennially by Tamils Representative Council (TRC). This

event is supported by the Tamil Language Learning & Promotion

Committee (TLLPC) and the Tamil Language Council (TLC). This will

be the 5th edition of the series started in 2009.

In 2015, TRC received the support of MOE, SINDA and Mediacorp

(Vasantham). The Finals was telecast on TV as a pre-recorded event

and as part of the annual Tamil Language Festival.

In 2017, the debate series will be limited to 32 Schools. There will be

2 preliminary rounds, a quarter-final, semi-final and final before one

of them is crowned as Champions and receives the Sorpor Challenge

Shield. The winners will receive cash prizes and trophies. The best

speaker for each debate will be presented with a book voucher.

For 2016, the final rounds will be held from 2 -

4 December in Dubai. In addition to the

countries which participated in 2015,

contestants from UAE, Oman, Canada, UK are

also expected to take part.

and allowed 5-10 minutes’ preparation time.

Over the last eight years this debate series has received very good

feedback from teachers, students, parents and the community. Many

have commented that this is a good opportunity for students to

strengthen their skills in conversing, being able to conduct research in

the Tamil Language and thinking on their feet. It has also built

confidence and teamwork amongst the participants.

Registration details will be emailed to all primary schools in

January 2017. Interested schools may contact us for more details

in early January.

2017-ல் 32 பள்ளிகள் இதில் பங்பகற்கலாம். 2 பதர்வுச்சுற்றுகள், 1 காலிறுதி சுற்று, 1 அனரயிறுதி சுற்று ைற்றும் 1 இறுதிச்சுற்னற தாண்டி ஒரு பள்ளி கவற்றிைாளராக பதர்ந்கதடுக்கப்படும்.

தைாரித்து பபசும் சுற்று, தாைாரிப்பின்றி பபசும் சுற்று எை இரு பிரிவுகனளக்ககாண்ட இப்பபாட்டி ஆசிரிைர், ைாைவர், கபற்பறார், சமூகம் எை அனைவரின் வரபவற்னபயும் கபற்றுள்ளது.

கசாற்பபாருக்காை பதிவு ஜைவரி 2017-ல் கதாடங்கும். ஆர்வமுள்ள பள்ளிகள் அப்பபாது எங்கனள கதாடர்ப்புக்ககாள்ளலாம்.

Since its founding in 1951 by the late Mr G Sarangapany, TRC has

been providing a united framework for all the different Tamil

Organisations in Singapore. TRC has been able to attract a broad-

based support from the Community and the Tamil Community

Tamils in Singapore.

Currently we have more than 1,000 members and 35 Affiliates

representing some 30,000 Tamils in Singapore. However, we will like

• Attendance is strictly by prior registration only. Walk-In cases will not be entertained. Please allow a minimum of 3 working days to process your registration.

Suvadugal – Tamil Heritage Series As part of its 65th anniversary celebrations, TRC is collaborating with

the National Library, Singapore to hold a Tamil Heritage Series to

explore the rich heritage of Singapore Indians, to create interest in this

subject among the younger generation and to promote NLB’s

resources such as the Tamil Digital Heritage.

These quarterly panel discussions celebrate the past and also connect

it forward to the present and future by focussing on current/future

trends. The first session was held on 9 July and discussed pioneers

Tamils in Singapore. The upcoming programmes in this series will

focus on traditional business and evolvement of the spoken Tamil in

Singapore.

சுைடுகள் – தமிழ் ேரபுவடவே சதாடர் 65-ஆவது ஆண்டு நினறவு ககாண்டாட்டங்களின் ஒரு பகுதிைாக தமிழர் பபரனவ பதசிை நூலகத்பதாடு இனைந்து தமிழ் ைரபுனடனை நிகழ்ச்சி கதாடருக்கு ஏற்பாடு கசய்திருக்கிறது. கடந்தக்காலத்னதத் கதரிந்துககாள்ளும் அபத பநரத்தில் நிகழ்காலத்திலும் வருங்காலத்திலும் சிங்கப்பூர் தமிழரின் ைரபுனடனை தகவல்கள் எவ்வாறு உதவக்கூடும் என்பனதயும் அறிந்து ககாள்ளலாம்.

Legal Clinic in Tamil

(Your First-Stop for Free Legal Advice) Good news for members of the Tamils Representative Council and its

Affiliate Organization members!

TRC conducts legal clinics which provides free basic legal advice and

information. Qualified Lawyers will be available for consultation on a

one-to-one basis. This Clinic will assist members who need advice on

personal matters or business matters pertaining to the laws of

Singapore. All sessions are limited to 30 minutes per person and will

be kept confidential. The legal clinic will be held on weekdays from

7.30 pm to 9.30 pm and will be conducted in Tamil and English only.

Where necessary, TRC Management Members on duty will assist in

referring you to where you can get further help.

All advice and information given at these sessions shall be as a matter

of guidance and comfort only and is not intended to replace, substitute

or supplement legal advice and any legal action that may be needed

in each case. The volunteer lawyers are bound by law not to act any

further for those attending these free legal clinics.
