DIRECTOR'S NOTES Our production of this story has been a unique collaboration--Michael Massey as

scenic designer, Sara Medina-Pape and Matthew Kelbaugh as costume designers, John Harris as lighting designer, Rick Mishler as sound designer, Leone Eickhoff as make-up designer, and I are striving to illuminate the journey of the Joads as a mythic road to an elevated awareness: in the words of Casy the Preacher "Everything that lives is holy'' and "We are all one."

Our goal has been to integrate and synchronize our efforts to create those dimensions perceived in human consciousness--land, dust, sky, heavens, cosmos. We seek to present the journey of these ordinary, impoverished, homeless workers called "the Joad's" as transforming, extraordinary, and heroic.

Both as a novel and as a film, THE GRAPES OF WRATH has attained such importance for us that my task has been to blend icon, archetype, and metaphor with the most meticulous realism. The MARY MOODY NORTHEN THEATRE holds a unique place as the center of a community which radiates intellectual and spiritual energy. Thus, we have taken special care to consider the audience in the intimacy of the MMNT arena. Our choices in direction and design seek to exploit this intimacy-from the purposeful shading of the truck to the extension of actors into the audience and outward to the theatre wall . I have labeled this production "the ballet of the universe" because we are seeking to capture the courageous spirit of the Depression Dust Bowl in a form that will be meaningful for us today and yet eternal in its significance.

In THE GRAPES OF WRATH John Steinbeck has captured the dance of avarice, injustice, prejudice and loneliness experienced by every age in which men and women construct their image of what it means to be human, what it means to be a community, in the shallow terms of one's fitness to buy, to own, or to possess.

DIRECTOR MELBA MARTINEZ-MISHLER, a St. Ed's faculty member, is currently a Danforth fellow pursuing a doctorate in Film/Theatre at the University of Texas. Ms. Mishler holds a Master of Arts degree in Theatre from the University of Wyoming, where she received the Ellbogen Graduate Teaching Award. She has also studied the "lively arts" in London, England through London University. Melba has directed the MMNT productions of THE GOOD DOCTOR, THE EFFECTS OF GAMMA RAYS ON MAN-IN-THE-MOON MARIGOLDS, BEYOND THE HORIZON, THE NERD, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, HOW THE OTHER HALF LOVES, HOLY GHOSTS, HAY FEVER, THE MIRACLE WORKER, BUS STOP, ROUND AND ROUND THE GARDEN, THE GIFT OF THE MAGI, and APPROACHING ZANZIBAR. As a member of Actor's Equity, she has performed in the MMNT productions of COUNT DRACULA and DEATHTRAP. In Austin, she performed in the Capitol City Playhouse production of the ROSE TATTOO and received the ACOT Best Director nominations for HOLY GHOSTS, and ROUND AND ROUND THE GARDEN. Melba would like to extend her heartfelt gratitude to her husband Rick and darling daughter Adriene.
