DESCRIPTION

This book showcases the process behind a project for my Packaging Design class where we were suppposed to redesign the packaging for an existing product. Designed original box to showcase the bath toys in a texturally rich lake habitat, taking inspiration from the portability and personality of a lunch box and also the presentation of a display case. The unique box shape, visibility of the product, and colorful setting are aimed to spark the imagination of a child and to catch the attention of the adult customer. Designed a hollow log to serve as an integral part of the lake environment in the packaging that also can be used as a canoe for the critters in the bath. The log doubles as a storage device, suctioning to the tub after playtime.

The OriginalTen cute little lake critters. Each one floats and squirts water. They come individually wrapped in this tube. The only visual reference to the lake theme is the top, with a horribly fake looking representation of a frog toy on a lifelike lillipad. The rest of the (very little) imagery consists of generic photography of happy baby faces.

The Problem1. So much plastic! Where’s the fun in opening it?2. Potential for narrative! Lack of it!

Early Inspiration

I was inspired by my research to create a unique environment that helps create a narrative for the toys. I also wanted to de-sign part of the packaging to be re-used and played with.

First Prototype

My first prototype takes strong inspiration from the idea of and look/feel of a lunchbox or child’s carrying case.

The Reusable Package?

Interesting shapes, cartons, and bags. Can the package be a storage device? A carrying case?

Aesthetics

I took some cues from the toys themselves, which each have a pattern on them.

Aesthetics

Eventually, I realized the potential of simplicity. I was inspired by the animal patterns on the toys themselves, and created a repeat pattern to add texture and subtle depth to the bright colored landscape.
