MUN stands for Model United Nations. They are academic simulations of a UN conference, and are modelled on the procedure followed by the United Nations.

MUNs are an epitome of intellectual debate and discourse. They hone youth leadership and helps develop valuable skills, the least of which are

knowledge of world affairs, lobbying, and conflict resolution. The United Nations Organization was formed in 1945, after World War II, with the primary aim of maintaining lasting peace and preventing another war of a similar or greater magnitude which, in all likelihood, may have destroyed the world as we knew it. The United Nations, a quintessential alliance of the States of this world, has been committed to maintaining

international peace and security and helping its members safeguard and honour the rights of the free people of this world.

The General Assembly is one of the principal organs of the UN. The Fourth Committee of the General Assembly – Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL) was simulated in the A-MUN 2013

The agenda for this committee was the extremely intriguing and incredibly incumbent issue, “The situation in South China Sea.” However,

to facilitate enhanced discussion and to come up with a more comprehensive resolution, the mandate of GA IV was relaxed to include the mandate of the First Committee of the General Assembly, which is the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC). This is to discuss the security and the specific regional militarization angle, along with the territorial dispute and technicalities of the United Nations

Convention on Law of Sea (UNCLOS).

Ahmedabad Model United Nations 2013 was a 2-day affair, held at

Hotel Platinum Inn, Vasna.

One Stellar Committee, the United Nations General Assembly IV-

SPECPOL, was simulated to discuss the „South China Sea‟ issue. The

turnout was heartening with over 60 delegates fiercely contesting in

quality debate.

The output of the committee was FOUR WORKING PAPERS aimed at

resolving the dispute. A resolution could not be passed due to

conflicting national interests, which reflects a consistency in foreign

policy & research.

Overall, the quality of debate was tremendous, considering the number

of first timers, one could safely conclude that AMUN ‟13 has contributed

to the intelligentsia of the city and helped strengthen the roots of

MUNing culture.
