What do you do when you are at that point in your life when you know you areready for change but have no idea WHAT to do, HOW to do it, or even WHY youshould do it?

6 tips to help you take the next step

Making Better Choices

1. What is your goal?In other words, what do youwant to accomplish? What isyour destination? This firstquestion is imperative. Knowingyour goal puts you in position totake the next step. Remember,it’s difficult to create a “roadmap” without knowing whereYOU WANT TO GO.

2. What do you know? Here’s the truth. We all know WHATto do or at least, we have a prettygood idea of what to do. Whatbrings us to the crossroads, if youwill, is not knowing HOW & WHYwhat we know will either work forus or work against us. Just likeweight loss, we all know what to doto lose weight–eat less, exercisemore. It’s when we know &understand “the HOW & WHY” thatwe create a completeunderstanding. It is that completeunderstanding that empowers youto change your life.

We can tell you, it gets frustrating. Sometimes, that frustration can lead you to just give in OR give up. What wewant you to know first, is you are not alone! We all want to change something about ourselves–whether wewant to lose weight, treat ourselves better, improve our relationships, or become better parents–we all desireto make Better Choices.

Secondly, change is a process. It’s a process that requires a few simple things.

MUMS I N C MAGA Z I N E | 4

Page 5: MumsInc Magazine September 2015

You MUST BEWILLING to moveforward. As long asyou are unwilling, you will neverchange..

FEATURE

6. Are you committed? It’s simple. You have to commit. Youmust be determined. You know theonly thing standing between you andyour goal is you. There is nothing elsestanding in your way. The momentyou get out of your own way is themoment you begin to change yourlife.Yes, it’s a process. Sometimes theprocess will be fun and other times, you feel like you can’t take anotherstep…but you do. That iscommitment. That is determination. It is in making that choice to keepgoing, to keep moving, to keeppushing yourself, that you becomecomfortable with beinguncomfortable. It is in that momentwhere you realize nothing WILL standin your way…not even you.

5. What are you willing & ready tochange? When you think about this question, don’t look at the big picture or thetotality of your goal. Instead, askyourself, what is the smallest step Ican take today? What Better Choicecan I make today? We call these tippingpoints. Tipping points are when smallthings make a big difference. So, if yourgoal is to lose weight, well understand, weight loss is not really the goal.Weight loss is simply the byproduct orthe result of the choices you makeevery day.Your readiness is always determinedby your willingness. If you are notwilling to make changes, then you arenot ready to change. If you are notwilling to do something different, thenyou will not attain anything different. You must be willing to let go of yourexcuses. Here is what we know about excuses. The excuses you keep telling yourself isyour way of giving yourself permissionto accept your unwillingness to change.

MUMS I N C MAGA Z I N E | 5

4. What are you afraid of?Are you afraid to fail or are your afraidyou will actually succeed? Sometimesthe intimidation of success is greaterthan the reality of failure. Why?Because with success comesaccountability. How many times haveyou avoided accountability for yourchoices and actions? How many timeshave you made excuses to mask thereal reason behind not taking the nextstep? There is a gift that comes withthe decision to allow yourself to getcomfortable with beinguncomfortable. It’s in that space ofbeing uncomfortable that you mustpush yourself. When you do, you willdiscover that the more willing you areat facing your fears the more youenable & empower yourself to takeaction to meet those fears head on!

3. What are your challenges? We all face challenges orobstacles in our life. Guesswhat? You always will.Because of that fact, you havetwo choices — you can chooseto face it head on so you cancontinue to move forward ORyou can choose to avoid it,which in the end, will keepyou stuck right where you are.

It's time to take the next step!

Don't let your fears defeat you. Let them motivate you!

Are Your KidsMoney Smart?

Some of those lessons learned inchildhood relate to love, work, andvalues. You teach your child thethings that are important to you andthe lessons you want them to learnto be successful, happy, andproductive.

Unfortunately, one lesson that’s oftenneglected is the lesson of money.Whether it’s because parents don’tfeel confident talking about moneyor they don’t think it’s important, many children grow up withoutmoney skills.

This isn’t a lesson that you want tolearn when you’re an adult. Theconsequences are too significant. They include financial stress, whichcan cause illness. Otherconsequences are debt, no savings, living paycheck to paycheck, and alife that’s more difficult than it needsto be.

What does it mean to be money smart?

There are different components ofbeing money smart. They includethe concept of saving, of goalsetting, and making your moneywork for you. Money smart meansknowing that instant gratificationisn’t always as satisfying as itmight be, and saving forsomething you really want canpay off in ways that you justcannot imagine.

Teaching your child to be moneysmart means teaching them:

• About saving money• About the importance of financial goals (long term and short term)• How to invest their money and make their money work for them• How to budget and allocate their money so they can pay for what they need and want• How to leverage technology and systems to stay in control of their money• That they’re the only person who can make decisions about their money• About the practice of giving or donating to help others in need• How to decide if they are going to spend money now or save it for later• How banks work• How to earn money and achieve their financial goals

These are some serious lessonsand in many cases they’re lessonsthat need to be learned over time. However, when you spend thetime and energy teaching yourchild to be money smart, they willgrow up to be confident with theirmoney. You can trust that they’llbe able to go out into the worldand stay out of financial trouble.

Children grow up to be adults. Thelessons they learn as children willbe carried with them as theybecome students, employees, husbands and wives, parents andgrandparents. If they learn thelessons when they’re younger, themistakes in adulthood are lessfrequent and less disastrous..

SleepSurvivalGuide

T i p s f o r n e w M u m s

Most new mothers find gettingadequate sleep to be a challenge.Getting up constantly is disruptive toquality sleep and you're not alone ifyou're feeling exhausted and irritable. This survival guide will help you getmore quality sleep and offer somecoping strategies to make thetemporary sleep loss easier to bear.

Getting More Quality Sleep:

Understand your sleep cycles. The quality of sleep is more importantthan the number of hours you get. Most people need 90 minutes to 2hours of uninterrupted slumber to enterinto restorative deep sleep. New momsneed methods to provide adequate restwhen they're frequently getting up tocare for their babies.

Use naps to supplement yournighttime sleep.Until your baby sleeps through thenight, naps can help you survive. Take anap when your child falls asleep duringthe day. Feeding your baby before a napmay help you both sleep longer.

MUMS I N C MAGA Z I N E | 9

Enlist your partner's help.Even if you're breastfeeding, your partnercan take a turn with night feeding if youpump and refrigerate your milk. You canalso get more rest if your partner bringsthe baby to you at night for breastfeedingso you don't have to walk around asmuch.

Seek out additional support. The first weeks are often the mostdemanding, so think ahead to arrange thesupport you'll need. Your parents orother loved ones may be able to move intemporarily or you may be able toexchange mutual assistance with otherparents in your neighborhood. If yourbudget permits, consider hiring atemporary nurse.

Ask someone else to cover the firstnighttime feed.Having someone else do the firstnighttime feeding is a great way to getsome hours of unbroken sleep. Even ifyou takeover later in the night, you'llhave gotten some much needed rest.

Work towards a consistent schedule.Rest assured that this is temporary andlook forward to getting back on a regularsleep schedule. You and your family willrest better when you have regularbedtimes.

Coping Strategies for Temporary SleepLoss:

Meditate. Meditation provides some ofthe same benefits as sleep. If you havetrouble falling asleep or there's no timefor a nap, try some quiet deep breathing.

Eat a healthy diet. You can improve yoursleep by avoiding excessive caffeine oralcohol. Drink lots of water becausedehydration can be tiring. A balanced dietwill also help provide the energy youneed.

Do gentle exercises. If your doctorsays it's safe to exercise, a gentleworkout may help you sleep better. You can find resources online or at yourlocal library.

Take a shower. A simple shower mayhelp you feel refreshed fast. A fewminutes under the shower and achange of clothes can help you feelmore awake.

Reduce other potential sources ofstress. As a new mom, you have a lotgoing on in your life, so try to minimizeany additional stress. Older childrenmay be able to pitch in with morehousehold chores. Postpone any bigdecisions until you can think moreclearly.

Talk with your doctor. Sleep deprivationcan have serious effects on anybody, and new mothers are already dealingwith many hormonal changes. Consultyour doctor if you need help managingall the changes. Your doctor can giveyou recommendations to keep you andyour family happy and healthy.

Being a new mother is a joyful andenriching experience. Work at gettingthe quality sleep you need and lookforward to many happy years with yournew baby.

MONIQUES 'S TOP TIP FORASPIRING YOUTH WORKERS

It's important to undertakeformal training and to fosterrelationships you make alongthe way. Voluntary placement isa great opportunity to eithergain an awesome reference orsecure a job offer.

You have to have a realpassion for working with

disadvantaged youth. Youdefinately have to have a

thick skin and be prepared toput in the hard yards.

It's not always easy, but thenanything worthwhile rarely is.

There's something amazingabout watching a young person

turn their life around andknowing that you have

supported them in the process. It' also great to work with like minded people, all

commited to similar passionsand goals improving young

people lives.

It gives great value to whatyou do when you work in

an industry that has strongethics , compassion and

commitment to humanity. There are so many

opportunities not only tomake a difference in the lifeof others, but opportunities

for training, personaldevelopment and growth.

Monique shares her insights about workingwith Youth.

I choose to work with homeless youth as Ibelieve that working with youth in crisis iswhere I can make the most difference.

I had a great mentor when I was a teen, Iknow first hand what a difference it canmake. When I set out on this journey I wanted to give back to the community, butin fact it has been amazingly rewarding forme and my personal growth.
