Major or Mini MovesAnything, Anywhere, Anytime!

If you’ve not yet been to have a look at our revamped website, please visit www.mumsmail.com and let us know what you think. The best feedback (good or bad) will win a lovely hamper from Mum’s Mail. In my 9 years at the helm of Mum’s Mail, I have been let down by so many website and soft ware developers, that I have al-most lost count. So much money down the drain, wasted on systems that aren’t eff ecti ve, don’t do what the developer promises it will do and simply don’t meet my requirements. So when I embarked on my latest quest to fi nd the best company to re-build the enti re Mum’s Mail web-site, I was naturally hesitant when I was referred to Crystal Media. What would make THIS web developer true to their word? Aft er meeti ng with Sacha and Ju-lian (the fabulous core of the business), I felt more confi dent that they knew what they were doing and what I wanted, and yet the payment of my 50% deposit was done with much reservati on – I had pre-viously had a very well known Durban-based website company run off with my rather substanti al deposit, which took me four years of legal wrangling to recover. Dealing with Crystal Media has been an absolute pleasure. When Sacha said “You’ll have that on Monday”, I got what she promised on Monday. And although we went live slightly later than planned, it wasn’t because they were running late, it was because they weren’t happy that things were working 100% and they wanted to ensure that all was as perfect as possible. What other business is THAT concerned about YOUR business? I have the utmost respect for Crystal Me-dia and advise anyone looking to revamp their website or looking for a brand new website to give them a call. Tell them I re-ferred you too, so they know they’ll have to be on their toes! Contact them on 031 – 266 0000 or [email protected].

Everyday LifeKhuhlekwethu

Thirty six year old Anna Dlamini from the Midlands started working as a cleaner straight after matriculating. Anna could, however, be found after hours in the kitchen watching and assisting the chef of Woodridge Estate where she worked. After a few months Anna was promoted to the kitchen. She then enrolled herself at Westville College to study catering and, in 2001, was promoted to head chef at Woodridge Estate.

Two years later she got married and or-ganised her own wedding from beginning to end. “I thought to myself: imagine if I could do this for a living?” says Anna.

In 2009, Anna gave birth to her twins and stayed at home with them for eight months. During this time, Barbara Ziets-man of Barbz Café and Deli offered her a head chef position. From the time Anna received her first pay cheque from Barbz Coffee Shop and Deli, she started to save towards her vision of co-ordinating wed-dings.

Over the next two years Anna grew her business’ stock to 200 knives, forks and spoons, 150 plates, dessert bowls and side plates, 200 chair covers and tie backs and 30 organza overlays. Her business is now called “Khuhlekwethu”, a Zulu word meaning “make it beautiful”.

“Thanks to patience, hard work and the support of my mentor, Barbz, my dream is coming true. I would love to grow the business to the point where I am co-or-dinating a wedding every Saturday,” con-cludes Anna.

Liv 52Liv 52 Syrup

If you have kids, appetite loss is a constant worry. Children sometimes don’t want to eat no matter what, and there are those who only wish to eat their favourite foods. And it’s a problem when children don’t eat nutritious food. A lack of appetite results in weight loss and lack of energy which is alarming for parents. This behaviour could lead to eating disorders or may be an indication of underlying illness. Too much pres-sure, stress or distractions are other reasons for appetite loss in children. Ensure you are not putting too much pressure on them to eat and do not force feed them as this can lead to severe eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia. The best thing you can do is to start feeding your child healthy foods at an early age. That way, they will get used to eating and enjoying healthy alternatives and won’t crave junk foods as they get older.

A quick solution to appetite loss is Himalaya Health Care’s Liv 52 Syrup that corrects the lack of appetite in the right manner. Liv 52 Syrup improves appetite, digestion and assimilation in children with poor appetite. In the majority of cases lack of appetite or anorexia is due to loss of basic rhythm of appetite and satiety. Liv 52 acts to cor-rect this basic defect rather than stimulating or supressing the appetite centre. Liv 52 contains no alcohol or sedatives.

Could You Have Co-dependent Traits?Co-dependency has been explained as a disease of relationships or an issue of dis-torted boundaries. In the past co-dependency has been studied in relation to alco-holics, drug addicts and their families. However, researchers have revealed that the characteristics of co-dependents are much more prevalent in the general population than previously thought. Co-dependency occurs when two psychologically dependent people form a relationship with one another. Each person supplies half of what is needed to create an independent person. As a result, neither person is able to act or feel independently.

Characteristics of people with co-dependency issues: • They are “addicted” to the relationship (like alcohol or drugs) and believe they cannot function independently without their partner. • They cannot define their own psychological boundaries – i.e. they don’t know where they end and others begin. Therefore they rescue others and take on their problems as if they were their own. • They are people-pleasers desper-ate to make a good impression on others. • They don’t trust their own ideas, percep-tions, feelings or beliefs. Therefore they defer to others and don’t stand up for their own opinions. • They play the “martyr” in that they learn to suffer gallantly. • They are skilled at controlling others. • Co-dependents are out of touch with their true feel-ings. • They are fearful, rigid, judgemental and often angry and resentful.

How to Help in PMB• The HS Ebrahim School was established in 1977 and meets a criti cal need for edu-cati on, training and life skilling of young people with mental disabiliti es and other challenges ranging from epilepsy to cere-bral palsy and auti sm. Most learners come from impoverished families that rely heav-ily on social grants. The school educates 226 learners of which 66 live in the hostel on the premises. In their att empt to make the school more accessible transport is provided. The learners also enjoy a hearty meal daily. The school has made great strides in the past few years to refl ect the hard work, dedicati on and commitment of all members and staff . The school is grate-ful to the Community Chest for their sup-port and vision to empower and change disabiliti es into positi ve abiliti es.

5 Ways To Change Your Child’s Life! (and your own)

Auti sm: Hope, Support, AnswersTRIAD Therapy Centre (41 Carey Road, Pelham, Pietermaritzburg), was opened on 16 January 2013. The school cares for eight precious children all whom have Auti sm Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the four teachers at the school follow an “Applied Be-haviour Analysis” programme. TRIAD does not dwell on the negati ve stereotypes as-sociated with Auti sm but celebrate each child as an individual and frame their habits in a positi ve way. For example, children with ASD: Can’t help but ALWAYS tell the truth; Are not confi ned by social norms so are ALWAYS true to themselves; Are very ti dy, meti culous and well-organised which mean no unti dy rooms or dirty, sti cky fi n-gers on mom’s walls and furniture; Have the most amazing photographic memory which means nothing ever gets lost; Are fascinated by small things and they love repeti ti on, so are easily entertained and don’t get bored easily.

Despite this positi ve outlook, TRIAD ac-knowledges that Auti sm is a disorder. Red fl ags, or things to look out for when diagnosing, TRIAD says, include: No bab-bling by 11 months of age; No simple gestures by 12 months; No single words by 16 months; No two-word phrases by 24 months; No response when name is called; Rarely makes eye contact when interacti ng with people; Do not play peek-a-boo; Rarely smile socially; More interested in looking at objects than at people’s faces; Seem to be in their own world; Odd or repeti ti ve ways of moving fi ngers or hands; Oversensiti ve to certain textures, sounds or lights; Lack of interest in toys, or play with them in an unusual way (e.g. lining up, spinning, opening and closing parts rather than using the toy as a whole); Compulsions or ritual.

For more info contact: Triad, Desray 033 – 818 9715 orPaola Reggiani 082 306 2978.

SWAT Laser Tag GamesSWAT Laser Tag Games is a make-believe combat game that can be enjoyed by boys and girls, from the age of six upwards. Un-like Paintball the Laser Tag Gun projects a harmless infrared beam – much like your television remote, so no pain and bruis-es!

Once you get used to the equipment you will fi nd the laser tag guns deadly accu-rate and be amazed at the eff ecti ve range of the laser taggers. Unlimited ammuni-ti on and lives are included in the rate, so there’s no sitti ng around watching your friends play aft er an early eliminati on. There is a progression to more challeng-ing laser tag missions aft er the fi rst few rounds though, so the quicker you aim bett er, the higher your chances of sur-vival!

The nature of the SWAT Laser Tag prod-uct is so safe and easy to play that no un-comfortable, restricti ve protecti ve gear is needed.

Alice Leah, Editor of Mum’s Mail, said: “Planning my son’s birthday party has be-come somewhat predictable. For the last few years all he ever wants to do is paint-ball or laser tag. This year Ethan laid down the law – NO GIRLS! He was worried that they would get hurt. I must admit, I think I would also be a litt le nervous with all that testosterone in the trees. Despite atro-cious weather conditi ons the kids had a blast at the arena behind the Pick n Pay Hyper in Durban North. I would highly recommend laser tag for girls and boys and paintball for the boys.”

For an out-of-the-box event for that spe-cial occasion contact the experienced SWAT Laser Tag team; they run Mobile Units all across the Western Cape and KZN countryside.
