My family has just spent a whirlwind three weeks visiting New York, Disney World in Orlando and Dubai. Travelling with kids is slightly more challenging than travelling alone (eek the traffic in New York is scary), but despite the exhaustion of being on the go 24/7, we had the most fantastic time!

Here are some travel tips if you’re plan-ning a similar trip: • Do your research beforehand so you have an idea of what you want to do and see, or ask your travel agent. If you can book and pay online for certain things, then do so as many places offer discounts for online bookings. • Make sure you book kids’ meals for the flights as they get activity kits/bags/soft toys etc de-pending on the airline. • Get going early! Our days consisted of getting up at the crack of dawn and heading out for break-fast on the run.• Your kids will tire after a long and busy day, so book a bus tour. The best value for money was our New York Pass, a hop on/hop off bus tour that was valid for 2 days and allowed free entry into almost 80 attractions. • We thought twice about spending $75 per person on a Broadway show, as once you convert back to the Rand it is a small fortune, but if you really want to do something, do it as you’ll regret it later if you don’t. • Do not book anything via the hotel’s concierge service! We were quoted almost $200 per person for our Broadway show which we booked direct for $75. • Take advantage of the “buy once and refill” offers. At our Disney hotel you could buy a cup for $15 then have free unlimited refills. • Always call 24 hours in advance to confirm the time of your transfer to the airport, even if your travel agent has pre-booked it. • You will not be able to avoid delays, so don’t let them upset you – we sat on the runway for 2 hours in Durban before taking off and then 3 hours in a queue in New York to get our passports stamped. • We often ate at self service type restaurants as a sit down meal in some cases quadrupled the price for the same meal.

Good luck planning your travels and do let me know where you go and what you do! Bon voyage! Alicexxx

Everyday LifeThere’s a New Place in Town

A new Action Sports Arena has opened in Pietermaritzburg. It is called Midlands Sport and is the best of its kind in KZN with amazing facilities. Action Netball leagues will be launched at the venue in mid November so, ladies, book now for a fast, fun night out with your friends (and some exercise to go with it)! A schools’ league will follow shortly thereafter, promising to make the venue a success as in Durban alone there are well over 150 school sides already. Schools’ cricket, soccer and hockey leagues will all be established. Coaching facilities are available, and coaching seminars by top sport coaches are also planned for the venue. With all this in one place Midlands Sport is set to be a one-stop entertainment and sport facility. Speaking of entertainment why not plan an action-packed corpo-rate end-of-year function at Midlands Sport? Christmas packages are available on

How to Help• The Ruth Mailbag Group is a group of volunteers who provide much-needed apparel for premature and newborn in-fants at state hospitals. Items are given to the children free of charge, the most needed items being hats and booties for larger preemies and full-term babies, as well as blankets and quilts (size 30” X 30”). Donations of yarn, fabric and supplies are warmly accepted and given to certain volunteers to make up the required items themselves. Donations of children’s toys and clothes are also welcomed.

To participate, simply make up the items needed and deliver to one of the receiv-ing hospitals. Yarn that can be washed in hot water with harsh detergents and dis-infectants should be used for all projects. November is Prematurity Awareness Month and volunteers are asked to spread the word, wear purple to show your support and donate booties, hats and blankets. There is also a Christmas Baby project which closes on 1 December.

To find out which hospital is nearest you or how to be involved contact: Joy Coetzee, [email protected].

• Vryheid Child Welfare has been op-erating in the Vryheid area for 87 years. They have a number of projects aimed at protecting children against abuse and ne-glect. They offer crèche facilities, a toy li-brary, quarterly foster care support groups, annual Christmas parties, Clothe-a-Baby initiatives, food distribution, a sewing club and a support group for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Areas include Enyathi, Mbilane, Vryheid hospital and Mooiplaas. Members of the public can help by donating: cash, food, clothing, household goods, stationery, gar-den and construction materials or time.

A Winning Gifting Strategy from Skin Worx

There is just over a month to school holi-days and less than two months to Christ-mas day. Before they know it parents will be rushing frantically from shop to shop looking for gifts for teachers. And retailers will start gearing up for the inevitable last-minute buying frenzy that epitomises the festive season.

“Last-minute shopping and buying under pressure blows the budget, is time con-suming and frustrating, all of which could be avoided with a little planning,” says Elaine Kooiman of Skin Worx, a Pieterma-ritzburg-based cosmetics and household retailer of quality branded products at val-ue-for-money prices. “Everyone is feeling the pinch, so the idea is to wise-up and optimise your time, spend and travel costs with a shopping strategy that will help you buy intelligently and stick to your budget,” she says.

Kooiman’s winning shopping strategy is simple: • Make a list of every person for whom you intend to buy a gift. • Next to every name write what type of gift you would like to buy and the amount you have budgeted for that person. • Then make a list of the shops that will provide these items at a value-for-money price. • You may even want to first give the shops a call to make sure they have the gift in stock and the price.

Skin Worx has sourced a selection of highly desirable luxury items that are retailing at a fraction of the cost anywhere else. Locally produced but in line with international gift-ing trends, there is something special for everyone. A courier service is available.

Self-EsteemSelf-esteem is your sense of personal value. It is how much you value your self. How much you value your self is largely determined by those around you, including the media, books, magazines, movies and all manner of institutions.

During the process of growing up, we collect bits of information about ourselves from all of these external influences and we form an identity for ourselves. When you look at this identity, and when you begin exploring how you feel about yourself, you start realising just how much these external influences have had an effect on you. They have shaped your beliefs – some of them good, some of them not. Some have built up parts of your sense of value, while others have damaged parts of it.

The question is, what would you like to do about it? A trained self-esteem counsellor will help you identify your external “identity” influences, and what impact they are still hav-ing on you. You can then begin to form a new sense of who you are, based on what you know to be true about yourself. It is a process that empowers you to take charge of your own value system. You build your outer strength from within. It is not a process of laying blame at anyone’s door. Rather, it is about releasing beliefs and perceptions that may be inaccurate and may be inhibiting your ability to see truly who you are. As an investment it is second to none; how you feel about yourself does matter.

Ethical Consumerism a Must for S.A.

In 2011, the value of imports from China to Africa came to $93 billion. This increas-ing economic tie is creating an influx of mass-produced, cheap and in most cas-es poorly manufactured goods to South Africa. Every street corner houses a R5 store or vendor selling household goods, toys and paraphernalia which appeal to the mass market’s pocket. But what are the consequences for this mass market? One major concern is the increasing un-employment rate due to factories closing down.

Africa owns an enormous wealth of skill, in-novators, designers and crafters who pro-duce unique and resilient goods that are proudly African and that epitomise what this continent represents. By training, de-veloping and empowering these individu-als and assisting them with the tools and springboard to markets, Africa can most certainly become a pivotal global player, creating sustainability and viable solutions for the many challenges faced by this continent.

Another concern created by this trade agreement, is the waste that is created by more and more plastic goods being imported. One main remedy is the en-forcement of recycling of products and goods. An innovative South African com-pany called Ben & Bear has found winning solutions for both these challenges. Ben & Bear sources and supports local suppli-ers throughout S.A. and Africa to create artistic and functional products. Waste becomes renewed in eco- and contem-porary products such as corporate gifts and merchandising, promotional prod-ucts, fashion, lifestyle and household ac-cessories. These contemporary products are made by small emerging businesses creating employment, and providing the necessary skills training. Founder of Ben & Bear, Raewyn du Toit says: “We would like to invite decision makers to continue with us on our journey and help encourage others to do the same.”

Educated Life Educated LifeBioLink: A Natural Alternative

BioLink is a natural alternative for ADD/ADHD treatment. It helps improve concentration and focus for all children, including those with ADD/ADHD, through Bio-Feedback exer-cises. And those improvements are measurable through scientific testing – something unique to BioLink!

Consider this: • 8 – 10 % of school children are diagnosed with ADHD. • About 30% of children experience adverse side effects with ADHD medication. BioLink is at the cut-ting edge of edu-feedback technology in South Africa and offers a safe, child-friendly environment in which your child can learn attention skills. BioLink is a complementary programme that will enable children to excel in all other therapies they attend, e.g. speech therapy, occupational therapy, reading classes etc. BioLink sessions are done on an individual basis and the effectiveness of concentration exercises can be scien-tifically measured.

Here is what one parent had to say after her child underwent BioLink therapy: “Logan has never found school easy. We always had to work extra hard just to ‘make’ it. I knew something kept him back. We tried many different avenues. It was all very good but didn’t solve his problem. BioLink has changed Logan’s academic life. He started the programme eight months ago but I didn’t see much change in him until five months ago. He used to be a daydreamer and was distracted very easily. He became more focused during homework and more positive towards school tasks. This happened because his concentration improved (and this is a lasting improvement) and he felt more confident.” Lee Murray.
