Hillingdon Manor School celebrates its 15th year!!
Thursday 23rd October, leading independent school specifically for children on the autistic spectrum Hillingdon Manor School celebrated it’s 15th birthday. Founded in 1999 by Anna Kennedy OBE, Hillingdon Manor School started as a local support group for
children and families affected by autism. The first classroom took shape in Anna’s garage, teaching a small group of children including Anna’s two sons Patrick and Angelo.
Anna put the gears in motion for the school when Patrick 24 and Angelo 21 who are both on the spectrum were struggling in mainstream school, and Anna came up against the lack of knowledge, understanding, education and resources relating to autism.
After much market research in her local areas of Hillingdon and Uxbridge, Anna found that the small number of children with autism living there were faced with similar challenges, and decided to connect with the families.Fifteen years later, the school now caters to 150 children and provides both primary and secondary education.
The fifteenth celebrations kicked off yesterday afternoon, which included all of the pupils and was visited by special guests Sir John Randell, MP for Uxbridge, who has supported the school since the beginning, and Waterloo Road Star Richard Mylan, who was met with very excited members of staff and pupils, many of whom are fans of the show.
Richard Mylan Actor from BBC TV Series Waterloo Rd, who has a son on the spectrum was told about the school and wanted to help the school celebrate and support the amazing things that the school has and is achieving.’ “I recently visited Hillingdon Manor School during their 15th birthday celebrations & was frankly blown away by what I saw!
As I walked around the building, visiting the classrooms & meeting the students, what immediately struck me was how warm, vibrant & full of joy its occupants were. The staff & students were very accommodating & eager to show off their achievements… Which were many!
The building boasted Art rooms, photographic dark rooms, metal work & science rooms, building & decorating workshops to name but a few! & It struck me how relevant & plugged in the ethos of the school is to the needs of young adults & children with autism.
I was so inspired by the energy & enthusiasm of the teachers which transferred to the smiling faces of the many talented students I spoke to.
I left with a feeling of hope for my wonderful young son of 9 years who has PDD & also a strong urge to move to Middlesex! Or at the very least, the urge to bang on the necessary doors here in Wales, telling them about the amazing, awe inspiring & most importantly, progressive things that are happening right now at Hillingdon Manor School.” The highlight of the celebrations was when pupils in their final year, gave heartfelt and emotional speeches on what the school had meant to them. One pupil describing his experience at Hillingdon Manor School; “I am very different to how I was when I started at Hillingdon Manor in 2007. This may just be an old building and school, that needs tender loving care, but it’s cosy, it’s home and a great place to learn.”
Anna remortgaged her home to open the school, and now Hillingdon Manor School is located over three sites.The school offers a unique mix of education and support to pupils across the spectrum, and offers its pupils a safe and structured education and a brighter future. Personalised teaching and learning within an autistic specific environment allows pupils’ individual needs to be addressed completely and their capabilities fully realised.
Not stopping there, Anna went on to set up a Community College in 2001, a respite home for adults in 2004 and a second specialist school in Kent in 2011.
In 2009, Anna wrote Not Stupid, which openly describes the struggles faced when opening Hillingdon Manor School and the adversity that she faced.
Hillingdon Manor School is identified throughout the UK as a leading educational institution for children and teenagers with autism.
“Over the past 15 years, we have been faced with challenges and struggles that as many points we didn’t feel we would overcome. The support that we have received over the past 15 years has been overwhelming and we want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved and for everyone’s support. West Ham United and Anna Kennedy Online says ‘Give Us A Break’ this Anti
Bullying Week. A survey conducted by Anna Kennedy Online, which included over 900 parents of children with autism throughout the UK has revealed that over 60% of children affected by autism have suffered at the hands of bullies in mainstream schools.
What’s more alarming is that schools are not addressing the problem, with 73% of families stating that it had been either ignored or was poorly handled. these startling results also reveal that a staggering 93% of parents believe that their child’s development and education have been directly affected by being bullied.

West Ham United applauds the work of Anna and Anna Kennedy Online. The premier league football team pledged their support for the charity after Anna worked with the club to create a campaign in the Newham area, where the club is based.
A representative for West Ham United discusses the intended results of the collaboration; “We hope that by highlighting the work that Anna Kennedy Online is doing, more will be done to raise awareness of this concerning problem, and to help families who are affected.”
Richard Mylan, of Waterloo Road fame has also pledged his support to Anna Kennedy Online and Anti Bullying Week. Richard, who has a son with autism recently helped to celebrate the 15th birthday of Hillingdon Manor School, a school, founded by Anna Kennedy, developed especially for children and adults with autism, and was blown away by Anna’s ongoing work. Richard Mylan Actor from Waterloo Road discusses his son’s experiences; “My 9 year old son Jaco has a form of autism called PDD. Though I can honestly say that he has not suffered bullying in all his years at a mainstream school, I am all too aware that he will probably encounter some sort of bullying when he moves to secondary.”

The Government is cutting back on everything at the moment, and the problem is becoming a real time bomb. This situation needs to be addressed, and when it gets to the point where children’s education and lifestyle is being compromised, it is becoming a real problem. We are creating a generation of adults who are unable to integrate into society or contribute effectively.
Richard Mylan then discusses the reasons for the lack of bullying, and the policies in place; “The reason for the lack of bullying at his current school is education & immersion. Jaco and his peers have known him since they were 4 years old and see Jaco’s condition as ‘normal’.
They encourage, help and even nurture and that ethos has translated through to the wider school community as he moved to a bigger primary. The new kids saw Jaco’s classmates treating him with respect, affection, valuing his input and this had a ripple effect. I know that my sons situation is probably unique. He will suffer some sort of bullying in his school life and if he does, I would like to think that with so many positive peers looking out for him, it would not escalate & become unmanageable.”
Anna Kennedy OBE, who has two sons Patrick and Angelo who are both on the autistic spectrum has worked with several young people and children with autism who have been affected by bullying. One such lady includes the very talented Alice Jordan who has written a song about her experiences with bullies called ‘You Won’t Hurt Me Anymore. This was a major achievement for Alice, who for many years struggled to communicate. Alice performed her song at Autism’s Got Talent May 2014, which is one of many events organised by Anna Kennedy Online to recognise the potential and positivity of autism.
Anna and her supporters are calling for your pledge to support this essential campaign and help tackle bullying in schools against vulnerable children.
“I felt that a survey was needed to truly assess the extent of the problem due to
the overwhelming amount of emails and messages we receive as a Charity and
through Social Media from families who are affected by this issue at grass-roots
level every day; it became apparent that they needed a platform through which to
voice their direct concerns. The Survey was the perfect opportunity to raise the profile
of the problem and alert schools to take action on what is evidently an extremely
serious issue”
