18th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) A Sunday Reflection Today’s Gospel presents us the story of the feeding of the five

thousand, a miracle so important that it’s the only one that appears in all four gospels, one that prefigures the Eucharist.

One phrase caught my attention: the disciples ask Jesus to “dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves” (Mt 14:15). This may have seemed the practical thing to do. After all, the evangelist tells us that there were “five thousand men, not counting women and children” (14:21). And yet, Jesus’ answer is different: “give them something to eat yourselves” (14:16).

His answer should make us think of the times we have been dismissive of others, when we have failed to make even a small attempt to meet their needs. Sometimes the need may seem greater than our ability to help. It is then that we should rely on the Lord to supply whatever we are lacking. The One who fed the five thousand with only five loaves and two fish will look kindly on the love we put in serving one another and give us what we need.

I take this opportunity to thank all who have contributed to keep the Grove Outreach going during this time of need. The Lord will generously repay those who have been generous to the least among us. God bless you.

Domingo 18o del Tiempo Ordinario (Ciclo A)

Reflexión Dominical El Evangelio de hoy nos presenta la historia de la multiplicación de

los panes, un milagro tan importante que es el único que aparece en los cuatro evangelios porque prefigura la Eucaristía.

Y me ha llamado la atención una frase. Los discípulos piden a Jesús: “despide a la gente para que vayan a los caseríos y compren algo de comer” (Mat 14,15). Debió parecerles lo más práctico. Después de todo, el evangelista nos dice que eran “cinco mil hombres, sin contar a las mujeres y a los niños” (14,21). Y sin embargo, la respuesta de Jesús es diferente: “Denles ustedes de comer” (14, 16).

Esta respuesta debe ponernos a pensar sobre cuántas veces hemos “despedido” a otros; cuántas hemos dejado de hacer siquiera el menor esfuerzo por ayudar en su necesidad. A veces esta necesidad puede parecer demasiado grande para que podamos hacer algo. Es entonces que tenemos que confiar en el Señor, que suplirá lo que nos falta. El que alimentó a los cinco mil con solo cinco panes y dos peces mirará con amor nuestros esfuerzos para servir al prójimo y nos dará todo lo que necesitamos.

Aprovecho esta oportunidad para dar las gracias a todos los que han contribuido a la colecta de alimentos para el Grove Outreach en estos momentos de necesidad. El Señor, que no se deja ganar en generosidad, les pagará por haber sido generosos con los más pequeños entre nosotros. Que Dios los bendiga.

food. Lucas and his family then

drove to Midtown, Pinecrest,

and all the way West to collect

the cans. Then they dropped

them off at St. Hugh. He filled

one grocery cart, top and

bottom. Thank you, Lucas!

You are an example to us all.

Why use flowers at Mass In many Catholic churches flowers are the most commonly used

decorations in the sanctuary. While they might seem like an “afterthought,” the Church actually has distinct rules and regulations regarding flowers and makes use of them for specific spiritual symbolism.

“Floral decoration should always show moderation and be arranged around the altar rather than on the altar table”, according to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (305).

Flowers serve the purpose of reminding us of God’s creation and the beauty of his handiwork, and are meant to express joy. That is why their use is restricted during the penitential seasons of Advent and Lent. During Advent they can be used with moderation, so that the full joy of Christmas will not be experienced ahead of time. During Lent, on the other hand, the use of flowers is forbidden except on Laetare Sunday (4th Sunday of Lent) and during solemnities and feasts that fall during the season.

Flowers also remind us of the spiritual life and the virtues we should acquire within our hearts. They are emblems of the innocence and holiness that derives from Christ, the Sun of Justice.

Porqué usamos flores en la misa En muchas iglesias, las flores son las decoraciones más utilizadas. Se

pueden encontrar rodeando el altar, o frente a estatuas y otras obras de arte prominentes. Y aunque pueden parecer una «idea de último momento», la Iglesia tiene reglas con respecto al uso de las flores, que tienen un simbolismo espiritual específico.

La Instrucción General del Misal Romano dice en su párrafo 305: “Los arreglos florales sean siempre moderados, y colóquense más bien cerca de él, que sobre la mesa del altar”.

Las flores sirven para recordarnos la belleza de la creación de Dios y están destinadas a expresar alegría; por eso su uso es restringido durante los tiempos penitenciales de Adviento y Cuaresma. Pueden usarse moderadamente durante el Adviento, de manera que no se anticipe la alegría plena de la Navidad. En cambio, durante la Cuaresma se prohibe adornar el altar con flores, excepto el domingo Laetare (4o de Cuaresma) y durante las solemnidades y fiestas que ocurran durante dicho tiempo.

Las flores también nos recuerdan la vida espiritual y las virtudes que debemos adquirir dentro de nuestros corazones. Son emblemas de esa inocencia y santidad que derivamos de Cristo, el Sol de Justicia.
