WHAT IS A MULTIPLE MEANING WORD
Multiple Meaning Words are words that have
several meanings depending upon how they
are used in a sentence.
1.BALL
The girls at the ball wore beautiful gowns.
A mirrored ball reflected sparkling light everywhere.
2. BANK
You can get some cash at the bank.
It is a building at the bank of the river.
3. BARK
A squirrel was climbing up the bark of a tree.
My dog started to bark when he saw it.
4. BILL
We took our parrot to the vet when he hurt his bill.
My mom paid the bill with cash.
5. BIT
I bit into a delicious pie.
It was so good, I asked for a bit more.
6. BOX
My big brother is learning how to box.
He keeps his gloves and other gear in a box.
7. BRUSH
My dog gets burrs in her fur when she runs through the brush.
I will use a brush to get them out.
8. CAN
Can you get rid of this trash, please?
The trash can is right over there.
9. COUNT
Count Dracula’s castle was home to a lot of bats.
There were so many bats, no one could count them all.
10. COUNTRY
My grandparents came from France a country in Europe.
Now they live on a small farm out in the country.
11. DATE
I remember the first time I ate a dried date.
The date was May 3, 2007.
12. DIRECTIONS
My compass comes with directions that explain how to use it.
It has marks to show the directions north, south, east, and west.
13. FAIR
Today is the first day of the county fair.
Fortunately, the forecast calls for fair weather.
14. FAN
Every Tigers fan got a gift at today’s game.
The gift was a paper fan with the team’s name printed on it.
15. FOOT
Matt finally found a shoe that would fit his foot.
The shoe was over a foot long.
16. KEY
You need a key to unlock the computer room.
You can press any key on the keyboard to start working.
17. KIND
My grandmother is always kind to me.
She bakes whatever kind of cookies I want.
18. LEFT
We left the arcade after an hour.
We didn’t have anymore money left.
19. LETTER
I used special stationary to write a letter to my friend.
Each letter of the alphabet is printed around the edges.
20. LIGHT
My baby sister couldn’t reach the switch for the light.
She is very light, so I lifted her up.
21. LIKE
I am like my brother in many ways.
We both like to read mystery novels.
22. MINE
A great-uncle of mine was a prospector.
He dug for gold in a mine in Arizona.
23. MISS
Miss Bridges is our favorite teacher.
We will miss her over the summer break.
24. PALM
I got a splinter in the palm of my hand.
It happened when I was climbing up the palm tree.

He used a ballpoint pen to write their names.

We drank a pitcher of lemonade while we watched the baseball game.
The pitcher threw the ball very fast.

You can point to the vertex of the cone.
It is the sharp point at the top.
28. POUND
We got our new puppy at the pound.
She was so tiny, she only weighed one pound.

The pupils took turns in the mirror.
The pupils of their eyes grew larger in the dark.

I need to rest after climbing that steep hill.
I hope the rest of the hike will be easier.
31. RING
I heard the telephone ring, and answered it.
My aunt was calling to tell me she got a diamond ring.

I saw my dad and his friend cutting down the tree.

You can hear a different story there every afternoon.

I sat at the kitchen table to do my math homework.
I had to make a multiplication table up to 12 x 12.
39. TIRES
Dad never tires of washing his new car.
I help by scrubbing the tires.
40. YARD
We are planting flowers in our yard.
The flower bed is one yard long.
