Introduction into Central Lubrication
Multi-line and Progressive Systems
Two-line system
Single line system
Customer application
3/10/2014 Multi-line and progressive 2
DEFINITION
The multi-line system consists of
several pump elements that are
installed in one common housing.
From each individual element,
lubricant is supplied to one single
friction point.
3/10/2014 Multi-line and progressive 3
DEFINITION
The progressive system may
consist of the same pump as
single-line or multi-line systems,
however, one pump element, via
a progressive metering device, is
capable of supplying several
friction points with lubricant.
3/10/2014 Multi-line and progressive 4
System Description
Central lubrication with progressive distributors always consists
of the following basic elements:
Hand-operated, electric or pneumatically controlled lubrication devices (pumps)
Sectional or block progressive distributors
Distributing piping, plastic and metal tubes
Accessories, i.e. connectors, connections, clamps
The circuits of the central lubrication can also be furnished with
the following components:
Quick-break or contactless (induction) switch to signal the course of the lubricating cycle
Control and checking equipment (run timer)
Cleaning filters of distributing piping systems
Flow meters (for oil lubrication)
Pressure sensors
3/10/2014 Multi-line and progressive 5
Functional Description
A central lubrication system with progressive distributors is built up in such a manner that the individual distributors are linked in series between the lubricating pump and lubricated points. The number of distributing piping systems progressively increases in the direction of the lubricated points. Lubricated points or other progressive distributors can be connected to the outlets of the individual distributors. The distributors provide the forced dosing of a pre-selected amount of lubricant according to the strokes of the individual pistons to the outlets, and then to the lubricated points. In the course of a lubricating cycle, all the pistons in all the distributors incorporated into the lubricating circuit are moved.
The system operates as long as the pump is in operation. If the pump is switched off, the progressive metering device remains in its current position. When the pump is switched on again, the metering device continues to operate from the point where it was interrupted.
3/10/2014 Multi-line and progressive 6
Control and monitoring
The course of the lubricating cycle, i.e. the unit supply of lubricant to all the lubricated points, can be checked with a single signalling switch installed on one of the progressive distributors. The switch is usually placed on the control distributor or on the section of distributors that ensures the lubrication of the most important lubricated point. Generally, a switch can be placed on one or more of the progressive distributors in the lubrication circuit.
In the case where a control device fitted with a time delay relay is used, the period of the lubrication pump operation, during which one or several lubricating cycles take place, and the pause period, during which the lubrication system is out of operation, are fixed.
3/10/2014 Multi-line and progressive 7
General technical data
A central lubrication system with progressive distributors makes use of an operating pressure between 30 and 250 bar depending on the types of lubricating devices applied. The main pipework between the lubrication pump and the control distributor (master) usually consists of 10, 8, and 6 mm outside diameter tubes. Branch pipework, between the progressive distributors, and the lines between the distributors and the lubricated points use 8, 6 and 4 mm outside diameter tubes.
Lubricants used may be any mineral oil. Bio-degradable oils must be approved by the manufacturer. Plastic lubricants or greases up to NLGI - 2 classification by DIN 51818 may be used.

3/10/2014 Two - line 26
DEFINITION
The two-line system consists of heavy pump element that
are installed in common housing. The devices are operated
by two main lines. As the system cycles, it alternately
pressurizes or relieves the flow of lubrication from one line to
the other. With each cycle, lubricant is dispensed to one half
of the lubrication points.

System Description
Two-line lubrication with distributors always consists of the following basic elements:
Hand-operated or electric controlled lubrication devices (pumps)
Block two-line distributors
Distributing piping, rubber hose and metal tubes
Accessories, i.e. connectors, connections, clamps
The circuits of the two-line lubrication can also be furnished with
the following components:
Quick-break or contactless (induction) switch to signal the course of the lubricating cycle

Functional Description
3/10/2014 Two - line 29
Control and monitoring By the use of DD distributors all the lubricated points are lubricated during one
lubrication cycle, this means that each lubricated point is lubricated from one
distribution circuit. If a control device fitted with a time delay relay is used, the
period of the lubrication pump operation, during which one or several
lubricating cycles take place, and the pause period, during which the
lubrication system is out of operation, are fixed. Pressure control of the
individual lubrication cycles can be achieved by engaging the terminal switch.
3/10/2014 Two - line 30
General technical data
Dual - line central lubrication makes use of a working pressure of between
50 and 350 bar, according to the type of lubricating apparatus used. Pipes
with an outside diameter of 35 mm and 28 mm (3/4") are used as
distribution piping, while pipes with an outside diameter of 10 mm are used
for the branch circuits. Any kind of mineral oil may be used as lubricant. In
most cases, however, plastic lubricants or greases are used, classified at up
to NLGI - 2 in accordance with DIN 51818.
Lubricants used may be any mineral oil. Bio-degradable oils must be
approved by the manufacturer. Plastic lubricants or greases up to NLGI - 2
classification by DIN 51818 may be used.

DEFINITION
The single line consists of pump element that is installed in
small hydraulic unit. The devices are operated by one main
lines. System is built up in such a manner that a single main
pipework is mounted between the outlet of the lubrication
pump and the lubricated points. Connected to this piping, in
parallel, are the dosing elements
that supply the prescribed amount
of lubricant to the lubricated
points

Advantages in the Technique
Manual Lubrication Automatic Progressive System
• Lubrication every two weeks with hand
grease gun.
• The bearings are loaded on one side if
they are lubricated while not in operation.
The lubrication film cannot be build up
evenly in the bearing.
• After a certain operation time the grease
is used up and the bearings begin to
wear. The grease collar is not renewed
continuously and therefore its protective
effect is diminished.
• Lube points may be forgotten. Foreign
particles may be pressed into the bearing
when the lubrication fittings are dirty,
leading to premature wearing.
• Time-controlled lubrication of the bearings.
The grease is supplied to the bearings in small
quantities several times each day.
• The lubrication is performed while the
machine or vehicle is in operation, even at a
very high back-pressure. The lubricating film
builds up evenly in the bearing.
• Since the lubricating film is renewed
regularly, the service life of the bearings is
increased and the wear minimized. Moreover,
a grease collar protects the bearings against
penetration of water and dirt.
• All connected lubrication points are lubed
regularly and in exact quantities. Upon request
the lubrication system can be electrically
monitored.
3/10/2014 Single - line 48
Environmental Advantages
Manual Lubrication
• Large quantities of grease are expelled
from the bearings during lubrication. In
most cases this grease is not removed
and not disposed of. The grease lumps
may land on the surrounding
environment.
Automatic Progressive System
• A protective grease collar forms on the
bearings when the grease is pumped in
small quantities. This grease collar
hardens and can be properly disposed of.
For truck applications, the grease is
disposed of with oil separators when the
truck is washed in the washing yard.
• The burden on the environment is
smaller since the lubricant is metered
exactly in accordance with the
requirement.
