The nearest village is Drummore and here you will find a small supermarket (Drummore Stores), a general/ironmongers store (Harbour Stores), the Ship Inn and the Queens Hotel. There is also a post office, and you can get diesel only (no petrol) and repairs done at Ward’s Garage. You will find local information available at Kirkmaiden Information Centre in the main street. Stranraer is 25 miles away. There is a restaurant on site at the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse which provides excellent snacks and meals. The Farm Restaurant is a glass building with wonderful coastal views. Highly recommended! We hope you enjoy your stay at Mull of Galloway and if you require any other information, please do not hesitate to contact the Holidays Department on 0844 493 2108 or from overseas use +44 131 243 9331.

Mull of Galloway: The Old Lighthousekeepers’ Cottage, Kittiwake House and Puffin House

Recycling Facilities

There are bottle banks and bins for cans at the public toilets in Drummore or at the Village Halls in Port Logan and Portpatrick. Further afield, there are recycling facilities at the Tesco and Morrisons supermarkets in Stranraer (in Charlotte Street and London Road respectively). Local produce (some nearby suggestions)

• There is a small supermarket in Drummore that sells a range of groceries and seasonal local produce.

• Stranraer (22 miles) has a number of local butchers (Alex Jack on Bridge Street has a good reputation), bakers and grocers. There is a market in Stranraer on a Wednesday.

• The tearoom at the Mull of Galloway offers a very large menu, filled with homemade soups, sandwiches and cakes. It comes recommended by EatScotland.

• The Colfin Smokehouse in Portpatrick sells many different types of smoked fish, as well as local cheese, chutney, meats, whisky and ale. They have just won the gold prize in the 2007 Good Taste Awards, and their hampers make a delightful treat on holiday. Whilst there, you can also visit the working smokehouse next door to the shop. (Tel. 01776 820622)

• The Fernhill Hotel in Portpatrick has a rosette-awarded restaurant and offers a good menu filled with local produce, including the popular Mull of Galloway lobster. (Tel. 01776 810596)

• The Butterchurn in Port Logan has a farm park and playground attached to the tearoom, which serves home baking and the famous Cream o’ Galloway ice cream. (Clash Farm, Tel. 01776 705018 open 7 days)

Cycle Hire

Possibly available from the George Hotel in Stranraer (tel. 01776 702487). Otherwise, the best place is in Castle Douglas (65 miles, but many people drive through on their way to the property) at the Castle Douglas Cycle Centre (Church Street, Tel. 01556 504542). There are many cycle routes in the region on quiet country roads, making it ideal for wildlife spotting and admiring the views across the Solway Firth and even out to the Antrim coast.

Public Transport The nearest train station is at Stranraer, which is the terminal point for the South-West ScotRail service (around 8 a day). National Express coaches also operate a daily service to Stranraer, as do Citylink. From Stranraer, King of Kirkcowan buses (number 407) operate 9 services a day to Drummore: see www.kingscoachhire.com for full timetable details. 2 of these services operate a Ring n Ride addition, where you can book onward travel to the Mull of Galloway. This must be booked at least 24 hours in advance by telephoning SWESTRANS on 0845 270 9000.

Local walks The Mull of Galloway is part of a RSPB reserve and so many walks are available straight from the front door. There are a number of beautiful cliff walks to admire the diverse seabird colonies. It is strongly advised to bring a pair of binoculars so that you can admire the views across to Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man! For more inland scenery, there is a lovely walk at Ardwell Pond on the road between Mull of Galloway and Stranraer. Luce Bay has wide, sandy beaches that make for a relaxing stroll. For more adventurous walkers, the Southern Upland Way (the longest walk in Scotland) begins at Portpatrick and goes all the way to Cockburnspath in East Lothian! The first section goes from Portpatrick to Castle Kennedy, is 14 miles long and makes for a very scenic full-day walk. A taxi can be arranged from nearby Stranraer to take you home.
