Mulberry is a commercial e-mail client developed by ISAMET, Inc. For those reasons, Mulberry works as an excellent front end to the Cyrus electronic mail system at Carnegie Mellon.

Introduction

The Mulberry mail client is developed by ISAMET, Inc. and is free to the campus community. Mulberry can be downloaded from the My Andrew web service.

Through My Andrew you can also set mail filtering, vacation mail, mail forwarding and you can reset your Mulberry preferences. To complete any of these tasks, on the My Andrew web page, click on the appropriate link under the E-mail Options.

Installation

Before Installing Mulberry on a Macintosh

Mulberry for Macintosh has been pre-configured for use with the Cyrus mail system at Carnegie Mellon University. To download, install and use Mulberry successfully you must have certain software loaded on your machine. Verify that the following programs are installed before downloading Mulberry 3.1:

● Kerberos for Macintosh● Server Certificate

When you download Mulberry, the installer automatically checks to see if you have the latest Kerberos for Macintosh software installed. If necessary, a message is displayed instructing you to obtain a copy from My Andrew before continuing.

Follow these steps:

1. From the My Andrew Software page, scroll through the list and click on the Kerberos for Macintosh link. Follow the instructions provided to download a copy of the software. Complete the same steps to download the Server Certificate if needed.

Installing Mulberry on a Macintosh

Follow these steps to download and install the software:

1. Open a browser window and navigate to https://www.cmu.edu/myandrew/ 2. From the My Andrew Software page scroll through the list and click on the Mulberry link. 3. Click Download next to your Macintosh OS system and Version 3.1 to download the program to your

desktop. Follow the instructions provided to install Mulberry. We recommend that you select Easy Install as your installation type. Note: You will be prompted for the Administrator ID and password when installing Mulberry on Mac OS X.

Before Installing Mulberry on a Windows Machine

Mulberry for Windows has been pre-configured for use with the Cyrus system. If you have an earlier version of Mulberry installed on your machine you should remove it before installing a newer version. Follow these steps to remove an earlier version of Mulberry:

1. Select Start > Programs > Mulberry > Remove Mulberry. Note: On Windows XP machines, select Start > All Programs.

2. When prompted, "Are you sure you want to remove this?" click Yes. Once the earlier version of Mulberry is removed from your machine you can continue with the installation of the latest version of Mulberry.

To download and install Mulberry successfully on your Windows machine, you must have certain software loaded on your machine. Verify that the following programs are installed before downloading Mulberry 3.1:

● Kerberos for Windows ● Server Certificate

When you download Mulberry, the installer automatically checks to see if you have the latest copy of Kerberos for Windows installed. If necessary, a message is displayed instructing you to obtain a copy of Kerberos and the Server Certificate from My Andrew before proceeding.

1. From the My Andrew Software page, scroll through the list and click on the Kerberos for Windows link. Follow the instructions provided to download a copy of the software. Complete the same steps to download the Server Certificate if needed.

Installing Mulberry on a Windows Machine

Follow these steps to download and install Mulberry.

1. Open a browser window and navigate to https://www.cmu.edu/myandrew/ 2. From the My Andrew Software page scroll through the list and click on the Mulberry link. 3. Click Download next to your Windows OS and Version 3.1 to download a copy to your machine. Follow

the instructions provided to install Mulberry. We recommend that you use the Full Install. 4. Once the installation is complete, the system prompts you to restart your machine.

Note: If your machine is part of the Andrew Windows domain, Kerberos for Windows will already be installed. Proceed with the Mulberry installation. If you are not sure if your machine is an Andrew Windows machine,

please contact your system administrator.

Launching and Quitting Mulberry 3.1

Launching on a Macintosh

Follow these steps to launch Mulberry on a Macintosh.

1. Open the folder that was created when you installed Mulberry or double-click on the Mulberry icon.2. The Mulberry splash screen is displayed. Click OK to dismiss the screen.3. If you have not already logged in using Kerberos for Macintosh, the login dialog box is displayed. Type

your user ID and password and click OK. Note: If this is the first time you have used Mulberry or if you have reset our preferences, a dialog box may appear asking for your real name. If so, type your name and click OK to continue. Warning! Because authentication is done through Kerberos for Macintosh, you only need to login to the machine once to use authenticated applications, such as Mulberry, NiftyTelnet, etc.

Quitting on a Macintosh

Logging out of or quitting Mulberry does not change your authentication status. When you leave your machine it is very important to logout of Kerberos. Only by logging out of Kerberos will you prevent others from using your account.

Note: Do not logout of Kerberos before quitting Mulberry or you will no longer be authenticated.

Follow these steps to log out of Mulberry and Kerberos:

1. Select File > Quit or click on the x on the Mulberry window to quit Mulberry.2. To quit out of Kerberos for Macintosh, click on the Kerberos icon in the menu bar. The Kerberos Ticket

Window is displayed. 3. Select Destroy Tickets.

The Kerberos icon will remain on the menu bar but the time remaining is removed.

Launching on a Windows Machine

Follow these steps to launch Mulberry on a Windows machine.

1. Open the folder that was created when you installed Mulberry or double-click on the Mulberry icon.2. If you have not already authenticated using Kerberos for Windows, the Kerberos Initialize Ticket dialog

box is displayed. Enter your Name (userID) and Password and click OK. Note: If this is the first time you have used Mulberry or if you have reset the default preferences, a dialog box may appear asking for your real name. If so, type your name and click OK to continue. Note: Because authentication is done through Kerberos for Windows, you only need to login to the machine once to use any authenticated applications, such as Mulberry.

Quitting or logging out of Mulberry does not change your authentication status. When you leave your machine, be sure to logout of Kerberos for Windows. By logging out you prevent others from using your account. Do not log out of Kerberos before quitting Mulberry. Follow these steps to quit Mulberry and logout of Kerberos for Windows.

1. Select File > Exit or click on the x on the Mulberry window to quit Mulberry.2. To quit Kerberos for Windows, right-click on the Guard Dog icon in your system tray (bottom right of

your screen display). Note: On Windows XP, if the Guard Dog icon is not visible, click on the slider (circle with a left arrow) located in your system tray.

3. Select Destroy Tickets. The Guard Dog icon is grayed out.

Navigating and Configuring

This section provides an overview of the Mulberry screen displays, toolbars, and setting preferences.

The Mulberry Screen Display

By default, the Mulberry 3.1 screen display is split into three panes: the Server pane which contains the Mail and Contacts tabs and the Mailbox and Message preview areas.

The Mailbox pane displays messages for the mailbox that is selected. The Message preview area displays the contents of the message selected in the Mailbox pane. Select the message with a single-click. Status information is displayed for the selected mailbox and message.

The following graphic illustrates Mulberry window layout in its default setting of a 3 pane window/vertical display.

Setting Your Window Layout

You can alter the way Mulberry windows display through the Window menu. Follow these steps:

1. Select Window > Layout.

2. By default, the Mulberry windows layout is configured to Use 3-pane window and List Vertical. You

can experiment with the different settings and alter them to your preference. For example, to view the windows in their default setting of the Mulberry 2.0, select Window > Layout > Use Separate Window.

3. Once you have altered the appearance of your windows to your preference, select Window > Save Default Window to save your selection. Note: To customize your Mulberry user interface, select Window > Options and click on the Mail or Contacts tab.

Toolbars

To change the way your toolbar displays, select Window > Toolbars and select the desired option. To collapse the toolbar click the button on the left-edge of the toolbar.

Preview Panes

The standalone mailbox and address book windows now support an optional message or address/group preview pane. To select or deselect this feature for a mailbox or address book, select Window, then select either Show Preview or Hide Preview. When Show Preview is selected for a specific message in a mailbox, the message appears in a preview pane (see graphic). Select Hide Preview to eliminate the preview pane.

Tabbed Mailbox Panes

By default, the Mulberry windows layout is set to Use 3-pane window and List Vertical. This window layout allows for tabbed mailbox panes and quick switching between multiple open mailboxes. Follow these steps to use this feature:

1. If you're not using a 3-pane window, select Window > Layout, then select Use 3-pane window and List Vertical.

2. Once opened, each mailbox has a corresponding tab at the top of the mailbox view pane. Click on the tab to bring the mailbox into view in the pane below. Note: A blue envelope icon on a mailbox tab indicates you have unread messages in that mailbox.

3. To manipulate and move the tabs, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Macintosh) on the tab to invoke a pull down menu.

4. From the pull down menu, you can set tabs to dynamic or locked:

�❍ select Locked if the mailbox tab is one that you frequently use and that you want to always appear

�❍ select Dynamic if the mailbox tab is NOT one that you frequently use. The dynamic setting will cause the tab to appear only as requested or in place of other dynamic tabs.

Navigating Tabs

When using Mulberry on a Macintosh, if you open too many tabs some will disappear from your screen display. To view the missing tabs, close some of the mailbox tabs, then in the server pane, click on one of the mailboxes you do not currently have open. The window is redisplayed.

On a Windows machine, use the scroll buttons to move through the tabs.

In the Mailbox pane, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Macintosh) on any header to invoke a pull down menu. This menu allows you to rearrange the order of your heading columns.

Note: To turn off the Tabbed Mailbox View, select Window > Options and click on the Mail tab. Deselect the Use Tabbed Display checkbox.

Navigating Mailbox Windows using Keyboard Shortcuts

To navigate through your message list you can either use the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard or use single key navigation. For instances, to review all new messages that have been sent to your mailbox, press the "n" key on your keyboard to move to the next new message. If there are no new messages in the displayed mailbox and you press the "n" key, a message is displayed asking if you want to view the next mailbox with recent messages. Clicking Yes will take you to the mailbox with the new message highlighted.

The following list contains all single key navigation currently available. Note: The list is organized by Mulberry window and/or pane:

Setting Preferences

The Mulberry installer is configured to set most of your mail options for you. If you used an earlier version of Mulberry most, but not all, of the display preferences will remain the same.

Follow these steps to change configuration options:

1. Select File > Preferences. The Preferences dialog box appears.

2. The Preferences dialog box offers two modes: simple and advanced. Switch between the two modes by

selecting the Simple or Advanced radio button. �❍ Use Simple mode to set the frequency with which incoming mail is checked, your real name, the

incoming mail server you will use, your signature line and the folder to which outgoing messages should be copied.

�❍ Use Advanced mode to set all other preferences including those available through Simple mode.

Note: To learn more about any preference option, click the “?” icon in the upper right corner of the Remote Preferences screen display.

Including Signature Information

Follow these steps to include a preset signature line in your message:

1. Select File > Preferences. The Preferences dialog box appears. 2. Select the Simple radio button, then click on the Signature button. 3. The Dialog window appears.4. Enter the text you want to include as the signature line in your message. You may wish to include your

name, address, phone number or other relevant information. 5. Click OK to close the open dialog boxes and store the changes.

Follow these steps to include a preset signature line for a different identity:

1. Select File > Preferences. The Preferences dialog box appears. 2. Select the Advanced radio button, then select the Identities tab. 3. On the Identities tab, select the identity you want to set a signature for, then click the Change button. 4. Select the Options tab and click the Signature button. The Dialog box appears.

5. Enter the text you want to include as the signature line in your message. You may wish to include your name, address, phone number or other relevant information.

6. Click OK to close the open dialog boxes and store the changes.

If you no longer want to use a preset signature line in your messages, follow these steps:

1. Select File > Preferences. The Preferences dialog box appears. 2. Select the Advanced radio button then select the Outgoing tab.3. Click the Options tab.4. Deselect the option to Insert Signature Automatically.5. Click OK to save and close the Preferences window.

Follow these steps to include a preset signature on a case by case basis:

1. With the message draft window displayed, click the script A button.
