Yalugwamu VICTIM OF CIRCUMSTANCE

I CARRIED A HEAVY BURDEN OF SADNESS WITH ME EVERYWHERE I WENT. AIDS HAD DONE A TERRIBLE THING TO MY FAMILY.

After my husband died, I was left with five children to care for, my youngest John Mark, only two years old. The day he died, John Mark was jumping over him saying ‘wake up, wake up!’ He did not wake up.

Every morning—years later—I dug

in my garden, and one day I heard

crying. I left my hoe and walked just

four steps. Whatever it was sounded

like a kitty cat. I took one step further

and then my eyes focused. I thought,

‘Could this be a child?’

I took this baby, only hours old, to

my home and began to remove the

ants covering her back. Her skin was

pulling off from their poisonous bites,

and I knew she needed a doctor. This

child needed help, and struggling as I

was, I wanted to adopt her, this gift.

Then from there, I took this baby to

the police station and told them how

I had found the girl. I said, “This

child is my gift from God. I don’t have

much support, but please let me keep

her. They said ‘OK,’ and we named the

baby ‘Gift.’ Now we are all one family,

more complete than before.

EVERY CHILD IS A GIFT FROM GOD

THIS CHILD IS A

gift from God.HE TOOK ONE PERSON FROM OUR FAMILY, BUT HE GAVE US GIFT. “

That was four years ago, and Vennie also now cares for her deceased brother’s two girls, 10 and 13. She treats them as her own, but like so many African mothers, she cannot afford to send all her children to school. The children rotate one-by-one. And with eight children to rotate, that means one term on, seven terms off.

THIS ISN’T TO MENTION THE RISING PRICES OF BEANS AND MAIZE. WITH EIGHT HUNGRY MOUTHS TO FEED, EVEN A SMALL SPIKE IN PRICES LEAVES FAMILIES LIKE VENNIE’S STRUGGLING FOR MEALS.

VENNIE IS ONE OF THE MANY STRUGGLING MOTHERS IN UGANDA

THEY CANNOT DO IT ALONE.

HELP ELIMINATE THE FEAR that grips Ugandan mothers hearts by donating $500, or whatever gift you can, to the Mukadde Fund in honor of your mother this Mother’s Day.
