After spending the majority of our lives in a schooling environment, it is
crazy to think it is now all coming to an end. The 6 years we’ve spent
together as a year group have definitely been filled with the exciting
anticipation of one day leaving school and of course the long-awaited
end to the dreaded 8:15 am starts. Although, now that the day has
actually arrived, we can’t help but try and hold onto our final moments
here, wishing it would never end.
As a cohort we have become somewhat of a family and the faces that
were once unfamiliar in junior years have all grown into lifelong friends. We
shared memories of school camps, swimming and athletics carnivals and
countless lunch times which have all forged into moments I doubt we’ll
ever forget.
Issue 9 2018 Term 3 Week 9
From the 2018 School Captains: Lily Tomlin & Nathan O’Shea
Together in our captaincy we have had the privilege of
not only working alongside one another but in working
with an exceptional Student Executive Team. The time
and effort they have dedicated to making Muirfield a
better place is a true testament to their genuine and
determined motivations.
Together we have organised an in-school leadership
camp, International Women’s Day Breakfast, Athletics
Carnival Fundraising and numerous other fundraisers
that have all positively impacted our school. Of course, none of this would have
been possible without our advisor Miss Ansoul who has watched over us, keeping us
in line and focused on what needs to be done. Thank you for dedicating your time
and lending us your guidance and expertise.
In addition, our wonderful Year Advisor Miss Bligh gave us
much support. We know we are not alone when we say
that she is the most organised, efficient and caring woman
out there. Numerous times we have been in awe of her
ability to be so on top of things and when it came to being
our year advisor, there was no exception. You haven’t let
us down once and have made our transition from pre-
teens to some semblance of adults a very smooth one, and
for achieving that, we are eternally grateful.

To close, we would like to take this opportunity to wish the incoming Student
Executive Team the best of luck. Also, a big congratulations to our newest School
Captains, Jaelyn Mashiah and Josh Zann, who I’m sure will continue the legacy of
school pride and commitment to the student body alongside Vice Captains, Edmond
Lo and Sylvia Kramlik. We have no doubt that they will be selfless and determined,
continuing to uphold the values of this school that we have honoured throughout our
captaincy.
Thank you for the memories Muirfield, you are a part of us we will never forget.

Today marks an emotional day… The publication of our final Muirfield Matters
whilst students at Muirfield High School. As our days at Muirfield come to an
end, it’s easy to get caught up in the moments we have shared as a cohort:
6 years of classes, exams, lunches and trading answers to try and null the pain
of homework in school holidays. Looking back over memories and photos, it
all takes us back to our first day. It feels like so long ago. But, as they say, time
flies when you procrastinate.
All those years ago we awkwardly stood at the front gate, our minds racing
with the fear that our bags might be too small for all the books we would
need to carry each day. We were told the first day would be the hardest, but
over the past year we’ve learnt that was a lie. Nevertheless, we each found
some familiar faces and the rest is history.
And now, all these years later, it feels like a distant memory, probably
because it is, but looking back, it’s easy to see just how much our grade has
bonded and how so many of our friends were just strangers years ago.
So, let us take you on a trip down memory lane of the Class of 2018.
Year 7 marks the start of our high school
memories. With bags bigger than ourselves,
we met our peer support groups and
attended our first classes. A few weeks in,
we packed our suitcases
full of lollies, and made the trip up to the Great Aussie Bush
Camp.
The 3 days were filled with making new friends in the
campsite that had been flooded after the constant rain.
With only 1 trip to hospital, the camp was a success and is
Page 4 Muirfield Matters
From the Student Executive Team - Timothy McNee and Matt Swain
filled with fun memories of giant swings, gender benders and
meals inside the giant model Uluru. Between making plant cell
models, swim school and watching ‘She’s the Man’ 27 times in
English, the year flew by and before we knew it we weren’t
the shortest students anymore.
Year 8 brought a naively positive outlook on
school life, as the classroom echoed with “Now I
know I said this last year, but I am ACTUALLY
going to use my student planner this year”. We
had another week of swim school and, after extensive reflection, that's about
all we did. Year 9 brought a new range of subjects, with our electives giving us
the chance to choose our own high school adventure.
Year 10… what a year! As we started to get
to the pointy end of high school, there was a
sense of pride in being the elders of the
junior students. We embraced the
knowledge of universities at the Careers
Expo and took everything they had to offer:
mostly the pens, hats and water bottles.
Page 5 Muirfield Matters
Our exams marked the start of some of the fondest high school memories:
work experience, class parties and most importantly, camp. As all of us
prepared for either the storm of the HSC or to leave school and join the
workforce, camp was our time to have fun and grow stronger in friendships.
Year 11 brought not only a new colour of shirts but a different schooling
experience. Our change of subjects brought a change in the faces we would
see every day, and new friendship groups emerged once more. With only 3
terms to do a year’s worth of work, we put our heads down and got to work.
Our prelims tested us but would only be the beginning of the end, and before
we knew it, we found ourselves in Year 12.
Clad in our new, senior jerseys, we have spent the last year working harder
than ever, with the end in sight. This year has been crammed full of lessons,
homework, assignments, unproductive study periods, exams, Major Works,
Trials and now we find ourselves just days away from graduation.
Throughout the year, the student executive was hard at work. We had the
fantastic opportunity to attend the
Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum, a 3-
day camp that helped develop our
skills in leadership and teamwork. We
took what we learnt and produced a
condensed program for the SRC at the
end of 2017, allowing them to
Page 6 Muirfield Matters
experience similar activities and develop
leadership skills at the Muirfield Youth
Leadership Camp. We also coordinated a
BBQ at the Athletics Carnival, raising over
$1800 to help subsidise our formal.
It wasn’t until Year 12 we discovered the way to dispel our built-up stress; in
Term 4 we saw the inaugural handball tournament. If I’m honest, I thought it
would be dead by the next week, but now, almost a year later I can admit
that every single recess and every single lunch, rain hail or shine, there has
been cheers and laughter driving the PE staff mad. I guess that says a lot
about our grade, that throughout some of our most stressful and busy times,
everyone has been keen to just have fun
together and include anyone who joins
the line.
School has really taught us everything,
from how to read to that one PE lesson in
Year 10, and it's going to be hard to say
goodbye to this familiar place and step into the big world. There are too many
memories to say each and every one, but I’m glad I have got to experience it
all with such a great group of people.
As our time here ends, there are some people who we must thank who have
played important roles over the years. Firstly, the Student Executive Team who
have been a supportive group that has allowed
each of us to bring our skills and talents to help
improve the school. Our teamwork has shown
through the success of our Athletics Carnival
BBQ and the leadership camp for the SRC.
Page 7 Muirfield Matters
Thank you to Nathan and Lily, our school
captains, for being the face of this team and
encouraging our participation, while being
responsible role models not only for us but for the
entire school. It only seems fair that a special
thank you goes out to Deborah Hanslow, as she
has taken on so much of the planning and
organising of this team, and without her I’m sure
the Athletics Carnival fundraiser would not have been so profitable.
Ms Ansoul, thank you for the time and effort
you have devoted into organising the
Student Executive Team. Thank you for giving
up your lunchtimes to provide guidance and
experience in helping us be the leaders of the
school and making sure we were organised
and being on our back about meeting our
promised deadlines. You have been
understanding of the stress of Year 12 life and
we owe you our thanks for being encouraging in helping us get through.
This extends to the wider staff of Muirfield. Thank you for your consistent
dedication to our education, for continually planning lessons that are
engaging and for putting up with all the excuses and nonsense we’ve given
over the years.
Miss Bligh, thank you for all the countless hours of
work you have put in behind the scenes, even
before we were at Muirfield to make sure we
would have a smooth schooling experience.
Your dedication to us has shown when we
started to plan the formal only to find you had
Page 8 Muirfield Matters
Page 9 Muirfield Matters
already done it all. Thanks for planning our
camps, organising Mind Matters, keeping up
with the gossip of our grade and being both a
teacher and a friend throughout all of our high
school years.
Thank you to Miss Scott, our Careers Advisor who
has instilled in us so much wisdom of UAC and
the ATAR. Even though when our families ask
what our futures hold we say we don't know,
thanks to you we each have a plan for the
future.
Thank you to Miss Reeves for keeping the school
running and for your consistent dedication to making
Muirfield the best high school in North Rocks, if not the
whole of Sydney.
We must also say a huge thanks to our Deputy
Principal, Mr Jankovics (Janko). Although we don't
really know what you do, except walk around and
make jokes on assembly, thanks for keeping us safe
and doing whatever it is you do. Even though you
have only been with us for just under two years, you have become a
beloved name amongst our grade. We also must also thank Mr Grant for
making sure we all wore school uniform for the first 4 years at school.
Another thank you must be extended to the Year 12 parents, who are
hopefully still reading this, for raising such smart, wonderful kids. I’m sure you
will all agree that our grade has some of the most amazing, bright and
handsome students that this school has ever seen, so thank you for raising
such beautiful people.
And finally, thank you to our peers. It has
been a pleasure to get to know you all.
Thank you for being such an accepting
group. Right from that first day, we have
grown together to be an unbreakable
cohort.
Our time here at Muirfield High School has not only been intellectual but also
creative and emotional, leading us to new worlds and enabling us to
speculate about our future possibilities. The world seems big, but we each
have the skills, knowledge and talents to make this world our oyster and be in
control of our own destiny. The HSC and the ATAR might not define us, but
these past years do, and it has been an honour to spend these years with
such amazing people.
To end with an inspirational train metaphor, thank you for making this ride so
memorable and enjoyable, and no matter where you choose to go, we’re
always just a short trip away.
Keep dreaming, shoot for the stars and good luck.

Farewell Year 12
This week, on Thursday 27 September our school community
farewells the Year 12 class of 2018. Having only had the
pleasure of teaching at Muirfield High School since Term 2 2017 I have known
this group of young people for a relatively short time, however it is with
confidence I am able to see the profound ways in which they have
contributed positively to the fabric of our school culture- respect, participate
and learn.
The strength of Muirfield comes from its strong sense of community, the
support that students offer one another and the warm relationships between
staff and students. From the start of my appointment, this strong sense of
community, acceptance and belonging was evident in so many ways within
this cohort: the passion and enthusiasm of the students organising special
events, the friendliness with which students greet one another and staff
members and the expression of pride they have for their school.
As your formal schooling comes to a close, remember that you will always be
bound by the shared experiences at Muirfield High School as the class of
2018. You have acquired the skills to live your own life, and actively control
your own destinies. You have been supported, coached, mentored,
educated, and encouraged. You are now prepared to survive a complex,
technological world which increasingly is seeing information develop as the
key currency. It is a world where education is a continual process of learning,
unlearning and relearning. A world where one must be prepared to discard
outdated skills and relearn in order to stay relevant. I encourage you to
embrace this future of uncertainties but be sure to realise that it is not
something that just happens. It is up to you to make it happen.
From the Deputy Principal - Mr Jankoviks
Page 15 Muirfield Matters
Page 16 Muirfield Matters
Special acknowledgement and thanks go to the student executive for the
way in which they have led the school over the past year, they have acted
as exemplary role models. Our School Captains, Nathan O’Shea and Lily
Tomlin, have been dedicated, committed and inspiring student leaders. I
have thoroughly enjoyed working with them and are to be commended for
the way in which they have fulfilled their roles. They have been ably
supported by Vice Captains, Reegan Bain and Lily Simpson, who were
always there to provide support, advice and effort. Congratulations also to
all the Year 12 student executive: Harrison Chapman, Deborah Hanslow,
Timothy McNee, Marcus O’Neil, Johanna Selmes, Matthew Swain, Petria
Welsby, Taryn Woods who have fulfilled their duties admirably.
One very special person who has been on this journey with you has been
your Year Adviser – Ms Bligh. Her dedication and enthusiasm to the role,
particularly around providing comments on all your reports twice a year,
has been outstanding. Everything that she has done in the role of Year
Adviser has been with the best interest of all the students, for which we are
all grateful.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents, guardians and
extended families of Year 12, for working so positively with the school. We
have appreciated your support at all of the school based functions and
Page 17 Muirfield Matters
awards ceremonies, and most importantly, we thank you for trusting us with
the most important thing in your lives, your child. We sincerely hope that as
this stage of your life comes to an end, that it has been as enjoyable for you
as it has for them.
To all of the Muirfield High School’s teaching staff who have worked with our
graduating students to get them to be as ready as they can ever be for the
impending examinations, a sincere thank you. To Ms Ansoul, also a big
thank you for all the work you have done with the Senior Leadership team.
Mr Finley also needs special acknowledgment for his work in supporting
students as the Head Teacher Secondary Studies.
Finally, to Ms Scott, you always prove to be an amazing source of
information and are an incredible person who has guided and supported so
many of this year group through their school years. I strongly believe that
there would be only a few Career Advisers who could measure up to your
incredibly high standards.
Lastly, to the Year 12 Graduating class of 2018, I wish you all the very best for
your futures and congratulations on all that you have achieved and just as
importantly, all that you will achieve in the future.
Diving Success
Chris Bednar, Year 12 and Grace Barrett, Year 10 have been in Perth competing at
School Sports Australia Diving Championships and have both achieved some
amazing results. Chris finished with Gold in the 17-19 Boys Platform and 17+ boys and
mixed synchronised and Silver in the 17-19 boys springboard and 17- 19 boys
knockout. Grace finished with Gold in the 16 girls springboard and 16 girls
knockout and Bronze in the 15-16 girls platform. Absolutely brilliant results from both
these amazing athletes!
Student Safety
Our school is a very busy place at drop off and pick up times. In order to help
ensure the safety of students and staff we encourage all parents to use Tiernan
Avenue, opposite the school, as a drop off and pick up point. Students can
cross Barclay Road using the pedestrian crossing at the lights. Please do not
drop your children off inside the school grounds. The school carpark is not
designed to facilitate a drop off and pick ups.
It is important all our students get to and from school safely. Some important
tips for parents to model and share with their children include:
Always cross the road at a marked pedestrian crossing and if none is
available choose a safe place to cross where you can see traffic in
either direction.
Make sure your child gets in and out of the car on the footpath side,
away from traffic.
If travelling by bus, always wait until the bus has stopped before
getting on or off and wait for the bus to move away before finding a
safe place to cross the road.
Ensure your child is aware that they should never play on or around roads and
encourage them to play in parks, backyards or other safe places instead. As
parents and carers, the best way you can teach your child road safety is to set
a good example yourself. Our school community looks to all parents acting
safely and maintaining the safety of all Muirfield students.

Sydney Water Competition
What can Year 7 students do to fight the war on plastic waste, learn new skills
and help our school?
7G and 7B answered this question in
Term 2. Towards the beginning of
Term 2, our two classes entered the
Sydney Water “Brand without a
Bottle” competition. The competition
required us to create an
advertisement that convinced
teenagers to stop drinking bottled
water and encourage them to refill their drink bottles with tap water. The
winning video from Year 7 was a film about a fashion show entitled The
Sydney Water Fountain Fashion Show. The members of this team were
Gabriella Greco, Jesse Allsop, Rachael Dunk and Isabel Redoblado. We were
successful and got the teachers vote along with 7 other groups. When
submitted our story to Sydney water we were then made finalists.
The team entered the Sydney wide completion and won. As winners, we
were awarded $3000 and had the awesome experience of creating an
advertisement with a professional film crew. Through filming the
advertisement, we learnt film techniques and acting. We also learnt that our
school can help prevent plastic waste and reduce pollution.
We really enjoyed the whole process. The
Gala Night, hosted by Sydney Water,
was a lot of fun and we were given free
food. So remember our slogan “Just a
touch of tap, can bring our world back.”
Written by Jesse Allsop, Gabriella Greco,
Isabel Redoblado and Rachael Dunk.

Year 10 Dance Workshops with Baulkham Hills North Public School
This term, Olivia Eather and I were given the opportunity to mentor and
create an upbeat and enthusiastic jazz dance for Baulkham Hills North
Public School. We were able to see how focused and hardworking they all
were and it was definitely a great experience.
Olivia and I are so grateful that we were able to show them how Dance
works at Muirfield. We will both remember this opportunity and hopefully
use it to help us in the future. We both love teaching and we had such an
amazing time watching all the young dancers progress and become more
confident when performing.
They were able to perform with us at MADD night and Olivia and I were
beyond proud with their performance. They went on stage with confidence
and energy; they impressed the audience and had fun. We are so glad we
got to work with the loveliest group of girls and we hope they continue
dancing in the future. - Written by Lily Kirchberger Year 10

Uniform Shop
The P&C have made some changes to the uniform shop, including online ordering. Three
main changes are:
1. All uniform items will be able to be purchased through the online purchasing app,
Qkr! - please refer to the instruction sheet on the next page. Qkr is a secure,
encrypted app run by Mastercard. It is widely used in the Hills school community;
Crestwood High School, Northmead Public School & West Pennant Hills Public
School are a few schools that utilise the app. Both debit cards & credit cards can
be used.
2. Beginning on 3rd September, the new shop opening hours during school term will
be -
Each Monday 12.30pm to 1.30pm and
the 1st Monday of every month 5.30pm to 7pm.
WE ARE NO LONGER OPEN ON A THURSDAY.
All orders made on Qkr for a Monday lunchtime pickup (12.30pm to
1.30pm), must be placed by midnight the Sunday before.
3. New sport shorts. The new sports short have colour sides and are available in
regular and slim fit. They have a zippered pocket to secure wallets and phones.
I welcome our new manager, Teresa, who joins Kate in the shop.
The P&C Uniform Committee know that the whole school community will enjoy this more
accessible way to purchase uniforms for students.

Parramatta Boys AAL Squadron is enrolling for Term 3
2018 We are writing to let you know that the Parramatta Boys Squadron of the Australian Air League has is
enrolling cadets for Term 3 2018 at its meeting location at LOT 1 Edison Parade, Winston Hills NSW
2153 on Tuesday evenings from 7:15 until 9:15pm.
The Parramatta Boys Squadron is one of the oldest Squadrons in the Australian Air League, forming in
1935 and for many years met in their hall at Jubilee Park, Parramatta. Unfortunately, progress took its toll
and the hall that the Squadron had met in since the 1940s will soon be redeveloped, so the Squadron has
taken the opportunity to move into a new area at Winston Hills.
The Air League is inviting young people, who may be interested, to come down with their parents and learn
what the Air League has to offer. The Australian Air League is a nationwide organisation for young people
aged from 8 to 18 years. Staffed by volunteers and self-funding, it teaches leadership skills and provides a
wide range of interesting and exciting activities such as camping and hiking, sport and physical recreation,
building and flying model aircraft and ceremonial drill. Through classes and practical demonstration
members learn the theory of aviation and a wide range of associated topics such as Meteorology,
Navigation, Aero Engines and Aircraft Construction, as well as general interest subjects such as
photography, field craft and community service.
The Air League also provides a range of flying experiences for its members, from simple scenic joy flights
through to gliding and powered-flying training, from private pilot licence (PPL) through to airline entry
standards – all in aircraft owned, operated and professionally maintained by our staff.
Running a strong program that is both fun and educational, the Australian Air League is making fine
citizens out of young Australians. Currently there are also a number of other Squadrons in Western Sydney
including Penrith, Richmond, and Blacktown as well as Squadrons at Epping and Ryde.
Girls with an interest in aviation may also contact the Blacktown Girls Squadron via our 1800 number
