NEWSLETTER ~ TERM 2 - No. 10 – 4 July 2019 Parent Care Group Over the years parents have played an important role in participating in the pastoral life of the school. The Parent Care Group is a good example of this. The Parent Care Group consists of a group of kind parents who donate a couple of hours each month to prepare frozen meals for families in need. The Parent Care Group is interested in hearing from anyone who would like to donate some time. An hour every few weeks would be all it takes but it would make a huge difference to families in need. China Connection This week St Joseph’s School will welcome students from BeiCai China. The children are part of a group co-hosted by St Joseph's Papanui and Villa Maria College. Our visitors will be with the school for only two days. Just a small taste of Kiwi life. Next week our Global Youth Ambassadors will travel to China. During their time away the group will be spending time in a Panda Camp and will be taking in some of China’s world famous landmarks. Bon Voyage: Mrs Verweij, Mrs Clease, Hannah Johanson, Kate Young, Thomas Richards, Amber Oosthuizen, Charlie Harris, Taylor Stirling, Emma John and Ruby Moore. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK - Aaron Richards Netsafe Parent Workshop We had a good turnout of parents to the Netsafe parent workshop. This was an opportunity for parents to hear from one of New Zealand’s leading experts in cybersafety. If you are interested in learning more about keeping your children safe when using the internet at home please check out the school’s Digital Learning webpage that includes links to a range of useful information http://www.stjopapa.school.nz/Web/495/ Intermediate Open Night A reminder that the school is holding an Intermediate Open Night on Wednesday 31 July. This is a great opportunity for parents and Year 5-6 students to come along and learn about all the exciting opportunities they will have as St Joseph’s School Seniors. All Year 7-8 students at St Joseph’s School participate in a weekly Technology programme. The school has contracted Breens Intermediate School to provide specialist teaching in the areas listed below. The students at St Joseph’s School are provided the same Technology allowance as children enrolled in an intermediate school. Food Technology (cooking) Design and fabrication Soft materials Science Visual Art Hard materials (woodwork, metal work) Happy Term Break The colds and flus that have hit schools throughout the city have had a heavy toll on both children and teachers with many away over the last few weeks. The term break has come just in time to give many an opportunity to recuperate. I wish you all well and look forward to seeing your smiling faces return to school on Monday 22 July. Muſti Mania As detailed in last week’s newsletter we are having a having a mufti/crazy hair day. Tomorrow Friday 5 July. If you wear mufti or have a crazy hair do or both, please bring a gold coin which will go towards helping Doputz Primary School in Bougainville (Papua New Guinea). We join with all the Catholic primary schools around New Zealand and Caritas to raise money through Mufti Mania to help reopen their schools by: Providing new water tanks and toilets Repairing classrooms The Young Vinnies will come and take photos and award a prize for the best dressed, craziest hairdo from each syndicate at the liturgy.

In Sympathy We offer our deepest sympathy to Daniel Fick (McAuley 2) and Peter de Bruin (Timoney 1) on the death of their great grandmother. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their family at this sad time.

St. Joseph's Quiz Night! Saturday August the 24th

Save the date and start getting your teams organised

for a fun and entertaining evening together. More

details to follow.

Last Wednesday 26 June a Commissioning Mass

for the Young Vinnies groups was held at St

Mary's Pro- Cathedral. We were ably represented

at this event by Jack Segar and Joshua Tecofsky.

Bishop Paul Martin led the Mass and thanked the

Young Vinnies groups for their efforts in

supporting St Vincent de Paul initiatives in our

community.

Our Young Vinnies group would like to thank you,

our school community for your response to our 40

bags in 40 days Lenten appeal and participation in

our Caritas and Mufti Mania days.

Next term the Young Vinnies will run a talent

quest, so start practising over the holidays.
