PRELIMINARY FINDINGS OF PROJECT MILAB

Evidence for Military Kidnappings of Alleged UFO Abductees

by Helmut Lammer, Ph. D.

I. INTRODUCTION

abductions are generally avery strange and complex

phenomenon. For skeptics, journalists andthe public it is hard to believe that abduc-tions by alien beings have their basis inphysical reality. Reports of alien beings en-tering bedrooms through walls, levitatingabductees through closed windows andinto a waiting craft are hard for the open-minded researcher to believe, too. However, well respected researchers haveshown that the core of the UFO-abductionphenomena cannot be explained psycho-logically, as hallucinations or mass delu-sions [1]. The passing decades of abduc-tion research brought other changes.Recently, some UFO abductees have al-leged that they were also being kidnappedby military/intelligence personnel (MI-LAB) and taken to hospitals and/or mili-tary ground/underground facilities.

Few of the popular books on the subjectof UFO abductions mentioned these expe-riences. Especially disconcerting is thefact that abductees recalled seeing mili-tary/intelligence personnel working sideby side with alien beings in these secretfacilities. The presence of human militaryand/or civilian personnel inhabiting thesame physical reality as the alien beingsexceeds both the mindsets of the skepticand open-minded researcher alike by sev-eral orders of magnitude. The skepticswould rather believe that stories of aliensand military personnel in government un-derground facilities are fabrications de-signed to elicit attention from conspiracybelievers or hallucinations in general.Researchers in the field of mind controlsuggest that these cases are evidence thatthe whole UFO abduction phenomenon isstaged by the intelligence community as acover for their illegal experiments [2]. Theopen-minded researchers who fight for areputation in abduction research ignorethese stories, since they represent only aminor fraction in their files [3]. I think

that abduction cases in which the abducteereports that he/she was also abducted bythe military are very important for tworeasons:

1.) If the UFO community has evidencethat a covert military/intelligence taskforce is involved in the UFO abductionphenomenon, we would then know thatthis phenomenon represents a matter of na-tional security.

2.) The alleged military involvement inthe abduction phenomenon could be evi-dence that they use abductees for mindcontrol experiments, as test-targets for mi-crowave weapons, or that they monitor andkidnap abductees for information-gather-ing purposes during a UFO abduction ex-perience.

If one of these points is correct, one canexpect to run into early resistance whenproposing congressional hearings aboutUFOs. For these reasons I started ProjectMILAB and present in this article my pre-liminary findings. MILAB is the acronymfor Military Abductions of alleged UFOabductees. I reviewed the relevant litera-ture, contacted UFO and mind control re-searchers, MILAB abductees and mindcontrol victims all over the world and com-pared my findings with the comprehensiveUFO Abduction Study of Dr. ThomasBullard [4, 5], the MUFON TranscriptionProject [6, 7] and the MIT AbductionProceedings [1].

II. Helicopter activity in connectionwith MILABs

My study indicates that, generally,MILABs are harassed by dark, unmarkedhelicopters around their houses. The mys-terious helicopter activity goes back to thelate sixties, early seventies, when theyshowed an interest in animal mutilationsbut not for alleged UFO abductees [8, 9,10]. However, well known researcherRaymond E. Fowler reports mysterioushelicopter activity in connection with UFOwitnesses during the seventies [11]. Dr.

Dr. Lammer is ascientist with theAustrian SpaceResearch In-stitute. He is theAustrian repre-sentative for theMutual UFONetwork, a MU-FON consultantin geophysics, and a member ofthe Society forScientific Ex-ploration (SSE).

Thomas Bullard compared 270 UFO ab-duction cases worldwide between 1868and 1984, the majority of which occuredduring the seventies and early eighties [4,5]. There are only four abduction cases inDr. Bullard's study in which the abducteessaw helicopters over or near their housesAmong these cases is the well i nves i i ^MUdBetty Andreasson/Luca abduction [r iiimportant to note that these helicoptercases occured in North America, three ofthem in the USA and one in Canada. There were sightings of mysterious heli-copters in England during the seventies, but not in connection with animal mutila-tions or UFO abductions [12].

I found that helicopter activity reported inconnection with UFO abductions has

tended to increase from the eighties up tothe present. Dan Wright has presently tencases in the MUFON Transcription Projectfiles in which helicopters were seen flyingin the area of the abductee's home withinhours of an alleged abduction [7]. On aver-age, many abduction researchers in NorthAmerica have about three helicopter casesin connection with UFO abductions in theirfiles. It appears to me that this is a NorthAmerican phenomenon, since none of thecontacted researchers in Australia, Africa,Europe and South America have well in-vestigated abduction cases in connectionwith alleged helicopter activity.

Well known abductees like the beforementioned Betty Andreasson/Luca, orDebby Jordan, Kathy Mitchell, WhitleyStrieber, Leah Haley, Katharina Wilson,Beth Collins, Anna Jamerson and manymore were harassed by these phantom heli-copters [e.g., 1 3 N 15 16, 17, 20]. It isnot just if ied to Miguos i ihat these heli-copters represeni ilu black Cadillacs of theMen in Black (MlBj during the nineties[4], since some abductees have photos ofthem and they were also seen by witnesseswho have nothing to do with the UFO phe-nomenon, [e.g., 10, 13, 18]. It seems as ifthese unmarked helicopters operate forsome sort of secret military/intelligencetask force, whereas the MIB phenomenonseems to be of paranormal origin and re-lated to the UFO phenomenon. Let us sum-marize the helicopter topic in five points:

1.) The helicopter mystery starts duringthe late sixties, early seventies, in connec-tion with animal mutilations.

2.) During these times the agenda be-hind the helicopters showed a minor inter-est in UFO abductees.

3.) The helicopters began to increasetheir interest in UFO abductees during theeighties up to the present, but were also re-ported near animal mutilation sites andother areas in northern America.

4.) At present, many North Americanabduction researchers have some cases intheir files.

5.) There were reports of phantom heli-copter activity in England during the sev-enties, but it seems that their interest in an-imal mutilations and abductees is limitedto North America.

III. Alleged kidnappings bymilitary/intelligence personnel

Most abductees report the involvementof military/intelligence personnel after thehelicopters began to appear. Debby Jordanreports, for instance, in a side note of herbook Abducted! [13] that she was stunnedby an alleged friend and brought to a kindof hospital where she was examined by amedical doctor, who removed an implantfrom her ear! The abduction experiencesof Leah Haley and Katharina Wilson areful l of MILAB encounters [15, 16]. Someof Katharina Wilson's experiences arecomparable with mind control experi-ments. She experienced a flashback fromher childhood in which she rememberedbeing in a hospital where she was forcedinto a Skinner Box-like container whichwas possibly used for behaviour modifica-tion experiments. She subsequently pub-lished an excellent article on her Web-page with the title: "Are Some AlienAbductions Government Mind ControlExperiments?" [19] Beth Coll ins andAnna Jamerson include hypnosis tran-scripts of an abduction by human mili tarypeople in their book Connections [17], andthe late Dr. Karla Turner investigatedMILABs in her books, Into the Fringe andTaken: Inside the Alien-Human AbductionAgenda [20].

A worldwide survey revealed that mostNorth American abduction researchershave on average 2-5 MILAB cases in theirfiles. At present, it seems to me that thereare no UFO-related MILABs in Australia,South America, Africa, Europe, England,or Ireland. By comparing typical UFO ab-duction scenarios as described in Dan

Wright's MUFON Transcription Projectwith 10 well investigated MILAB victims(Casey Turner, Katharina Wilson, LeahHaley, Debby Jordan, and Polly, Pat,Lisa, Beth, Angie, Amy1), one finds somedifferences between abductions by allegedalien beings and military/intelligence per-sonnel.

MILABs involve the following ele-ments: Activity of dark, unmarked heli-copters, the appearance of strange vans orbuses outside the houses of abductees, ex-posure to disorienting electromagneticfields, drugging, transport with a heli-copter, bus or truck to an unknown build-ing or an underground military facility.Usually there are physical aftereffects, likegrogginess and sometimes nausea after thekidnappings. There is also a differencewhen the abductors appear. In most UFOabduction cases, the beings appear througha closed window or wall, or the abducteefeels a strange presence in the room. Mostabductees report that they are paralysedfrom the mental power of the alien beings. In MILABs, the abductee reports that thekidnappers give him or her a shot with asyringe. It is interesting, that MILAB expe-riencers report that they are examined byhuman doctors in rectangular rooms andnot in round, sterile rooms—as in descrip-tions of UFO abductees [4, 5, 6, 7]. Thedescribed rooms, halls and furniture aresimilar to terrestrial hospital rooms, labo-ratories or research facilities and havenothing to do with UFO furniture.

The examination is somewhat similar toUFO abductions: the MILAB vict im is notparalysed, but tied to an examination tableor a gynecological chair. Sometimes, theabduciec gel1- n strong drink before an ex-amina t ion This is perhaps a contrast-en-hancing fluid. MILAB doctors are mostlydressed in white labcoats and show an in-terest in implants and/or gynecological ex-aminations. In some MILAB cases a mili-tary doctor allegedly searches for implantsand sometimes implants the abductee witha mil i tary device. Therefore, surgeonsseeking alleged alien implants should alsobe prepared to possibly find military de-vices, too.

IV. Terrestrial implants

To date, more than three million animalsworldwide have been successfully fittedwith an implantable transponder manufac-tured by Destron-Fearing [21]. The im-plantable transponder is a passive radio-frequency identification tag, designed towork in conjunction with a compatible ra-dio-frequency ID reading system. Thetransponder is activated by a low-fre-quency radio signal, then it transmits theID code to the reading system. The small-est transponder is about the size of an un-cooked grain of rice. The transponder'stiny electronic circuit is energized by thelow-power radio beam sent by a compati-ble reading device.

A similar bio-chip for humans was de-veloped by Dr. Daniel Man in the USA. Dr.Man has held a US patent for a homing de-vice that can be implanted in humans since1989 [22]. He developed the implant forsolving the missing children problem. Thisdevice is slightly larger than the Destronimplant, which can be simply injected witha special syringe. Dr. Man's implant re-quires a small surgical incision instead. Itis important to note that Dr. Man claimsthat the best location for his implant maybe behind the ear. MILAB reporters likeDebby Jordan or Leah Haley claim thatdoctors removed implants from their ears!Dr. Man says that the device is powered bya small battery, which can be routinelycharged with a device that is held outsidethe body near the location of the implant.Authorities would use three satellites orspecially equipped helicopters if they wantto find or monitor a person. By using trian-gulation to follow the signal of the im-plant, satellites or helicopters could pin-point the implant's exact location. BeforeDr. Man's device becomes available foruse in humans in the USA, it will have tobe approved by the US Food and DrugAdministration.

An agency interested in monitoringphysiologic information about an abducteeduring an UFO abduction experiencewould use biomedical telemetry.Biomedical telemetry is defined as a spe-cial area of biomedical instrumentationthat permits transmission of physiologicinformation from an often inaccessible lo-cation to a remote monitoring site [23].The transmitting uni t can be implanted

within the subject's body. Animals havebeen monitored with biotelemetry forabout 30 years. By using telemetric sys-tems as a method of monitoring abductees, the military could obtain physiologicaldata, such as respiration, muscle tension, monitor the presence of adrenaline in thebloodstream, and so on.

Research in observation and control ofhuman behaviour and its possible use in re-habilitation and control has been con-ducted since the sixties. National Securityexperts like Dr. Steven Metz and Dr. JamesKievit predicted in their report TheRevolution in Military Affairs and ConflictShort of War for the US Army WarCollege, that in the near future everyAmerican at risk could be equipped withan electronic individual position locatordevice (IPLD) [24]. They suggested thatsuch a device could be permanently im-planted under the skin, with automatic re-mote activation, say, upon departure fromthe USA while passing through a securityscreening system at the airport. The pre-dictions of these national security expertsresemble the plans of Dr. Joseph A. Meyer,a computer specialist of the NationalSecurity Agency (NSA). Dr. Meyer pro-posed in the seventies attaching transpon-ders to Americans arrested for a crime [2].

During the late fifties, early sixties, neu-roscientist Dr. Jose Delgado invented thestimoceiver, an electrode capable of re-ceiving and transmitting electronic signalsvia FM radio waves. Such a device im-planted in the brain via the sinus cavities, for example, will act as a powerful stimu-lant when activated by FM radio waves. One can suggest that the stimoceiver hassince been modified to receive stimulationfrom microwave pulses and is capable ofwielding a surprising degree of controlover the implanted victim's responsemechanisms [25].

Implants were being used on unwittingpersons as early as fifty years ago. Onewell documented case of the implantationof an electronic device into a victim is thecase of Robert Naeslund. Mr. Naeslundclaims that he was unwittingly implantedduring an operation in Stockholm, Sweden. He has X-rays which show clearly a mush-room-shaped device in his brain. He claimsthat the operation was performed by Dr.Curt Strand, who inserted the device in hishead through the right nasal passage [26].Interestingly, UFO abductees since the six-

ties have reported how alien beings im-planted small objects up their nose throughthe nasal passage and sinus cavity. Thetransnasal approach of implants is in com-mon use in Neurosurgery [28, 29, 30, 31]!Robert Naeslund is not the only victim. Heis now a researcher of Gruppen, an organi-zation against illegal mind control experi-ments. Gruppen and other organizationslike the Freedom of Thought Foundationhave collected a lot of evidence that a se-cret implantation program is going on [26,27]. These organizations are in contactwith many victims all over the world whohave reported similar effects as Naeslundbut have nothing to do with the UFO com-munity.

V. Virtual Reality Scenarios andmicrowave hearing

It appears that some experiences of UFOabductees and mind control victims may beexplained by an advanced virtual realitytechnology. The late Dr. Karla Turnercalled these experiences Virtual RealityScenarios (VRS) [19, 20]. There are al-leged mind control victims who claim thatsomeone implants pictures in their brain[32]. If someone has been implanted withan intracerebral device, then the implantoperators may be able to electronically im-plant pictures and memories into the brainof the abductee. The New World Vistas wasa major undertaking for the USAFScientific Advisory Board (SAB) [33].This military publication was published inJune 1996 and is a forecast of possible mil-itary developments over the next 50 years. In it military scientists suggest the devel-opment of electromagnetic energy sources, the output of which can be pulsed, shaped, focused, and coupled with the human bodyin a fashion that will allow one to preventvoluntary muscular movements, controlemotions and actions, produce sleep, trans-mit suggestions, interfere with both short-term and long-term memory, and producean experience set or delete an experienceset. The military scientists argue that theconcept of imprinting a virtual reality ex-perience act is highly speculative, butnonetheless highly exciting. If such a tech-nology was developed in secret and existstoday, the remarkable vividness of someabduction accounts may be explained bythe implantation of an experience set intothe brain of an abductee.

Page 7: MUFON UFO Journal - 1996 12. December

MUFON UFO JOURNAL

Dr. Joseph Sharp and Allen Frey experi-mented with microwaves trying to transmitspoken words directly into the audio cortexvia pulsed microwaves. Dr. Prey's work inthis field, dating back to the sixties, gaverise to the so-called Frey Effect, which iscommonly known as microwave hearing[34, 35]. Again, alleged alien abducteesand mind control victims report that theysometimes hear voices in their heads, al-though they are not schizophrene.Certainly these scenarios cannot be thecase for all UFO abductions, like multipleabductions, but it may explain a small por-tion, or may play a significant role inMILABs.

VI. Otherworldly Journeys and mili-tary underground facilities

It is interesting to note, that seven ab-ductees of my test sample claim that theywere allegedly transported to a military un-derground facility. The research of Dr.Richard Sauder showed that almost everyfederal agency or military institution hasseveral secret underground facilities allover the USA. Some of these facilities areso secret, that there are only rumors abouttheir existence [36]. We should be awarethat Otherworldly Journeys to strange un-derground places are common in UFO ab-ductions. Dr. Thomas Bullard found a spe-cific pattern in Otherworldly Journeys [4,5].

1.) Preparation: The alien beings putthe abductee into a protective environmentfor the trip.

2.) Travel: Actual transit to the Other-world occurs.

3.) Underground: The abductee passesunderground.

4.) Landscape: The abductee sees thesurface of the Otherworld.

5.) Museum: The tour of the Otherworldincludes a stop at a museum or zoo.

Dr. Bullard's study includes ten UFOabduction cases in which the abductee ex-perienced an Otherworldly Journey with anunderground setting during their UFO ab-ductions. A typical Otherworldly Journeyis Betty Andreasson's experience in 1950.She reported that a UFO plunged into thesea and came out again, then entered hugecrystalline caverns which broadened into avast underworld. Less frequently, the ex-amination occurs in the Otherworld.During a 1967 abduction experience, Betty

Andreasson passed through a long darktunnel like a mine shaft cut out of rock. Dr.Gilda Moura informed me that she investi-gated UFO abduction cases where ab-ductees report Otherworldly Journeys intounderground caves in Brazil.

However, these Otherworldly Journeysare not comparable to well-investigatedMILAB underground cases. TheOtherworldly Journey experiences have amystical touch, while the MILAB under-ground experiences seem to be a manifes-tation in our reality. MILAB abductees de-scribe elevators, hallways, generators, con-ference and medical rooms. Contrary to ex-periences during Otherworldly Journeys, ifa MILAB abductee is kidnapped to an un-derground facility the abductors examinethe victims there. Some abductees reportOtherworldly Journeys and MILAB experi-ences separately [16, 20]. Beth, an ab-ductee from Dr. Turner's book, Taken:Inside the Alien-Human AbductionAgenda, described flashbacks that startedwith her seeing a small flying disc, thenentering into a well lit underground city[20]. The craft flew on through a tunnelpassage into an enormous cavern that con-tained several buildings. UFOs wereparked in various locations and alien be-ings were working side by side with humanmilitary personnel. In her next flashbackBeth flew somehow through a body of wa-ter, into a tunnel and then emerged from alake.

Such flashbacks should be investigatedvery carefully, since they could be a mix-ture of an Otherworldly Journey (enteringa well lit underground city) and a MILABunderground experience (seeing militarypersonnel). It is also important to note thatsome abductees have flashbacks duringwhich they see aliens and military person-nel together, but during hypnosis the ab-ductee remembers only the military per-sonnel [15, 37]. Perhaps the abducteemixed a UFO abduction experience and aMILAB scenario, or the abductee under-went some kind of hypnoprogramming bymilitary psychiatrists during the kidnap-ping. Perhaps the military uses somethinglike Electronic Dissolution of Memory(EDM), which is accomplished by elec-tronically jamming the brain, causing theneurotransmitter acetylcholine to createstatic which blocks out sight and sounds. After this mind-control procedure a MI-LAB abductee would have no memory of

what he/she saw or heard. The mind of theabductee would be blank [2, 19, 251.

VII. Discussion

We must also consider the possibilitythat some of the information we are gettingfrom MILAB abductees may be cover sto-ries, induced by the hypnoprogrammingprocesses of military psychiatrists. There isalso the possibility that the military per-sonnel use rubber alien masks and specialeffects during a MILAB. Katharina Wilsonreports flashbacks in which she thinks sheheld a rubber mask of an alien in her hands[19]. This facts leads some mind controlresearchers to believe that all alien ab-ductees are used in secret mind controland/or genetic experiments, staged by apowerful black arm of the US government[2]. However, I found some argumentsagainst these claims:

1.) If all UFO abductions are indeed acover for secret mind control or genetic ex-periments like the Lebensborn Project ofthe Nazis [38], why do abductees reportmilitary/intelligence involvement onlysince the early eighties, but not before? Weshould see the opposite in this pattern, since the mind control technology shouldbe much better in the nineties than duringthe sixties and seventies!

2.) Why are there mind control victimswho are implanted and used for secretweapons tests, but have nothing to do withthe UFO phenomenon or alien abductions? It seems to me that the mind controlagenda doesn't need UFO abductions as acover story, since nobody believes theclaims of ordinary mind control victims, although they have X-rays in which every-one can see anomalous objects in theirheads.

3.) If all UFO abductions are a cover formind control experiments, why is the mili-tary interested in gynecological examina-tions of female abductees too?

Of course serious researchers should in-vestigate all possibilities and some UFOabductees may indeed be mind control vic-tims or used in black genetic experimentssince the eighties or before, but I think thatthere exists another possibility for a motivewhich is more plausible for the military in-volvement in the UFO abduction phenome-non, since it describes the MILAB patternbetter. Therefore, my preliminary hypothe-sis of alleged military kidnappings of UFO

abductees is:

M ILABs may be evidence that a secretmilitary/intelligence task force has

been in operation in North America sincethe early eighties, and is involved in themonitoring and kidnapping of alleged UFOabductees. In the beginning of the eightiesa lot of money became available underblack budgets for top secret military pro-jects like the Strategic Defense Initiative(SDI). This task force might be financedby a portion of this money. It seems to methat they are interested in well investigatedUFO abduction cases. They are monitoringthe houses of their victims, kidnapping andpossibly implanting them with military de-vices sometime shortly after a UFO abduc-tion experience. It appears to me that theyare searching for possible alien implants, too. Their gynecological interest in femaleabductees could be explained if they aresearching for alleged alien/hybrid em-bryos, since many of the abducted femalesreport missing embryo/fetus experiences. Itseems equally probable that the force, orthe people who are behind these kidnap-pings, employ advanced mind control tech-nology which is currently being tested ille-gally on people who have nothing to dowith UFO abductions.

THE NIGHTLINE "UFO" VIDEO:

NO LONGER A QUESTION MARK

by Bruce Maccabee

L ate in June I received a call from JayLamonica, the producer of ABC's"Nightline" show which is hosted by

Ted Koppel. He called to tell me that he hada video of some strange lights that had beenrecorded by a special "GEODS" telescopesystem on Mt. Haleakala which is on theIsland of Mauai in Hawaii. He wondered if Iwould be willing to analyze it. He said therewere three bright lights which crossed thefield of view and that initially it was thoughtthese were lights on an airplane, but then thepeople who first saw the video noticed thatstar images passed between the lights with-out blinking so they thought that perhaps itwasn't a plane after all. Sometime, he didn'tsay when, after the video was first seen inearly December, 1993, someone in the AirForce, he wouldn't say who, had passedalong a copy of the unclassified video toABC.

Jay went on to say that, because of all theinterest (or hype) surrounding the film"Independence Day," Nightline was goingto do a show on UFOs and SETI (Search forExtraterrestrial Intelligence) and he won-dered if I would be willing to appear in theshow. I said "sure" and "when can I see thevideo," or words to that effect. He re-sponded that I couldn't see the video untilthe taping of my segment because hewanted to get my reaction to seeing thevideo for the first time. I was a bit irked atthat because I knew he would be asking meto base a conclusion on "instantaneousanalysis," hardly a scientific way to ap-proach the situation. Since I couldn't see thevideo I asked him for as many details as heknew. He did not know much. He said ittook several seconds for the lights to crossthe field of view which he thought wasabout 2 degrees. He also said that the tele-scope was pointed at or near the horizon. Iasked for the name of a person to call so Icould learn more details, but he wouldn'tgive me a name. I therefore asked him to re-contact his source and find out everythinghe could about the telescope and where itwas pointed.

We had some difficulty in setting up theexact date and time for the interview. In sub-sequent conversations, as we tried to specifythe interview date, Jay told me that he hadcontacted someone involved with the projectwhich took the video. He now believed thatthe field of view was probably 5 1/2 degreesrather than the originally mentioned value of2 degrees, but he couldn't be certain becausethere are several telescopes on Mauai and hedidn't know which one had taken the video.

The big day came over a week later, onJuly 11, 1996.1 arrived at the ABC studio inWashington. D.C. equipped with a ruler, acalculator and a pad of paper. Although Ihad only sparse information I was deter-mined to do the best analysis I could underthe circumstances. From what Jay had told

me I knew I would be able to estimate theangular velocity and angular spacing of thelights. Knowledge of these angular quanti-ties might allow me to reject, or at least setlimits on, the various potential explanations.

As soon as the camera crew set up the TVmonitor and video machine I began runningthe video over and over. Text at the begin-ning of the video stated that it was taken by aGEODS telescope during the year 1993 onday 335 at 032444Z (335th day of the year,December 1, at Greenwich Mean Time of3:22:24 AM which corresponds to 5:22:24PM, November 30 in Hawaii). I determinedthat it took almost exactly 3 seconds for thelights to cross the field of view (FOV), fromleft to right, in a straight line tilted slightlyupward. This corresponded to an angular rateof 1.83 degrees/sec or 0.032 rad/sec. (Note: 1degree = 0.0174 radians or 0.0174 rad.Multiply the angle in rad or the angular ratein rad/sec by the distance to get size or speedas measured perpendicular to the line, ofsight.) There were three lights, equallyspaced and traveling in parallel with the cen-tral light a bit ahead of the lights above andbelow. I measured the length of the image ofeach bright light and found it correspondedto an angular size of about 0.005 rad whilethe angular spacing between the upper andlower lights was about 0.01 rad. Close to thecentral bright light were two much fainterlights, one above and one below. Hence therewere a total of five lights (3 strong, 2 weak)traveling through the FOV of the telescope. If I had known the distance to the lights Icould have calculated the actual size and ve-locity (perpendicular to the line of sight)from the measurements I had made.Unfortunately there was no way to determinethe distance from the available information.

A fter watching the video several times and^\thinking about it I gained the distinct im-pression that if the information I had beengiven were correct (5.5 degree FOV; tele-scope pointed at or close to the horizon), thenboth the airplane and meteor hypotheses hadproblems. The images of the lights werespaced too far apart to be from an airplanenear the horizon unless it was extremelyclose to the telescope and had a very largewingspan, but in this case it would also betraveling very slowly. On the other hand, ifthe images were meteors the angular speedwas too low unless they were so far awaythat they might be outside the sensible at-mosphere, in which case they wouldn't glow.

Whether either of these potential explana-tions was correct, or if neither was, de-pended upon the actual angle of elevation ofthe telescope: was it pointed exactly at thehorizon? Was it pointed 5 or 10 degrees ormore above the horizon? Unfortunately Ididn't learn the answer to this importantquestion until many weeks later.

Dr. Michael Guillen, the science corre-spondent for ABC TV, was the interviewer. The first thing I said to him after being intro-duced and well before the cameras were"rolling," was "This is the worst investiga-tion I have ever done." I said that because Ihad never before made a public statementabout a potential UFO case without first car-rying out an investigation that at least in-cluded talking to the witnesses. (I realizedthat no one had actually seen the objects atthe time of the taping since the video hadbeen recorded automatically, but I knew thatsomeone associated with the project couldanswer the technical questions.).! then letMichael wait a bit while I did some calcula-tions of angular sizes and speeds. At the bot-tom of my note pad I wrote "Distance notactually known, nor (angular) elevation ofcamera (telescope). Hence can do no morethan make educated guesses."

Michael spent 30 minutes or more tryingto get me to identify the lights. We played thevideo over and over as we both watched. Thefailure of one star image in particular to dis-appear when it passed between the upper andmiddle bright lights (where the wing of anaircraft would block the star) was obvious toboth of us, as it had been to Jay. This seemedto be strong evidence that the lights were notconnected by an opaque body, namely, thewing of an airplane. However, (I pointed outthat we couldn't be certain because the fail-ure of the star image to dim very brieflymight have been some artifact of the cameraelectronics or the recording mechanism aboutwhich we knew next to nothing.

Michael told me that he had shown thevideo to Dr. Robert Nathan, formerly of theJet Propulsion Laboratory, and a long-timeUFO analyst with whom I have worked onUFO photos and videos over the last 20 years.Jay and Michael had been rather surprisedwhen Robert had immediately identified thelights as meteors without any analysis otherthan viewing the video. I told Michael I wassuspicious of the meteor explanation (for thereason given above) but that 1 could not besure whether or not it was correct withoutknowing the angular elevation of the tele-

scope. Furthermore, I doubted that a meteorwhich had broken into three parts before en-tering the FOV would have three nearlyequally sized pieces that could travel in paral-lel at exactly the same rate and could travelwithout creating a trail of burning particles.

Finally, after many minutes of seeming toattempt to "browbeat" me into making somepositive identification (perhaps he hoped Iwould claim it was a real UFO), Michaelasked me how the video ranked in terms ofcredibilty and strangeness and I said that thevideo had a high degree of both but that itwould have to remain "a big question mark."

During the evening after I left the ABCstation I began the real investigation. Ihoped to have a definite answer before thevideo was shown nationally on Nightline.Unfortunately, that was not to be.

After a more careful theoretical analysis Iwas able to put more specific restrictions onthe potential explanations. It became appar-ent that if the telescope were within 10 de-grees of the horizon the meteor hypothesiscould explain the angular velocity, althoughit still couldn't explain the constant speedalong parallel tracks without any sign of ameteor trail. Similarly, if the telescope werewithin 10 degrees of the horizon the airplanehypothesis was unlikely because the angularsize and angular speed would only be con-sistent with a very large aircraft flying (wellover 100 ft wingspan) at a very low speed(100 mph or lower) at a short distance fromthe telescope (a mile or less). The upshot ofthis analysis was that if the telescope werepointed close to the horizon the suggestedexplanations were severely strained if notsimply unacceptable. Hence the possibilitythat one — or three, or five — UFOs wereinvolved had to be considered. It all de-pended upon the angular elevation of thetelescope, which I did not know and which Iwas not able to learn before Nightlineshowed the video on July 16.

Because I had to locate the telescope op-erators by asking for help from other peopleit took well over a month to get the "realdata." The crucial information turned out tobe far different from what I had been led tobelieve. I had been told by Lamonica thatthe angular elevation was low, maybe sev-eral degrees ("near the horizon"). However,I learned from the operators that the actualangular elevation was much greater and, infact, was nearly straight up (85 degrees). Ialso learned that the telescope was about10,000 ft above mean sea level (AMSL).

This put a whole new light on the matter. It took me all of five minutes (or less) to

determine that under this circumstance thelights could be on an aircraft of some nomi-nal wingspan traveling at several hundredmph at a reasonable cruising altitude abovethe telescope. In fact, any combination ofwingspan, W in ft, speed S in ft/sec andheight H in ft AMSL which obeys the rela-tions S/(H-10,000) = 0.032 rad/sec andW/[H-10,000] = 0.01 rad would work.(Note: since the telescope is at 10,000 ftAMSL, the assumed H should be no lowerthan, say, 11,000 ft. Also, the assumed Hshould be no greater than 45,000 ft which isan upper altitude for typical aircraft). For ex-ample, if H = 20,000 ft AMSL the wingspancould be W = 0.01 (20,000 - 10,000) = 100ft and the speed could be S = 0.032 (20,000 -10.000) = 320 ft/sec or 220 mph. Similarly, the video would be consistent with a planehaving a wingspan of W = 40 ft and a speedof S = 128 ft/sec = 87 mph providing it wereflying only about 4,000 ft above the tele-scope at H = 14,000 ft AMSL. Naturallythere are many (an infinite) number of possi-ble combinations of W, S and H that wouldsatisfy the requirements of the video.

The telescope operators told me that, upon seeing the video, they had immediatelysuspected that it was an airplane, but thenthey questioned that explanation becausethey rarely, if ever, see an airplane overfly-ing the telescope installation. One of themen called the FAA to find out if there wasany record of an airplane scheduled to flyover Mt. Haleakala at the time of the video. He was told there was no such record (no airroute passes over the mountain). Of course,an aircraft could have flown over the moun-tain without the FAA having a record of itsexact flight path.

One aspect of the imagery seemed to di-rectly contradict the airplane hypothesis: atone time a star image appears to pass"through" the space between the bright cen-tral lights and the upper "wing" light. Thishad been pointed out to me by Lamonica asevidence against the aircraft hypothesis be-cause one would expect the star to be mo-mentarily blocked by a solid wing. When Ifirst saw the video I wondered whether ornot that could be explained as an artifact ofthe electronics. Subsequently I learned fromthe telescope operators that the nature of theimage forming and capturing electronics(RCA ISIT microchannel plate and imagescan device — like a vidicon — plus a scan

converter to make an ordinary VHS video)could have failed to record the brief "turningoff' of the star image because of time delay(integration time) in the processing devices.

CONCLUSION

A UFO is as a UFO does. If a UFO doesnothing that an IFO (identified flying object)could not do, then there is no reason to call ita UFO. In this case it appears that an air-plane would be consistent with the observa-tional evidence. Although I can not provethere was an airplane flying over the tele-scope, there is no reason to believe that anairplane could not have done so. Since thereis no evidence in the video which conclu-

sively contradicts the airplane hypothesisthere is no good reason to claim that thelights were something else.

An example of the opposite situation, where an unidentified object does somethinga conventional object could not do under theconditions of observation, is recorded in adaylight video taken July 21, 1995 in GulfBreeze, Florida. This video shows an oddlyshaped object, nearly rectangular in outlineand brownish colored, of roughly 30 ftwidth, looking nothing like an airplane or ahelicopter or a balloon/blimp, which re-verses its direction of travel from roughly500 mph rightward to about the same speedleftward (a 1,000 mph velocity change) inabout 1/3 of a second (over 100 g's of accel-

eration!).There is noman-madeor naturallyoccurringobject inthe skywhich canaccomplishsuch a featunder theconditionsof this ob-servation.Hence theobject re-mains aTrue UFO.

UFO SIGHTING OVER HANFORD NUCLEARREACTOR IN 1945By Rolan D. Powell, Byron D. Varner, Walter Andrus

As we approach the fiftieth anniver-sary of ufology or what is known asthe modern era of flying saucers,

sightings by competent witnesses prior to1947 become more significant. With thepermission of the writer, Byron D. Varner,of the privately published book Living onthe Edge: An American war hero's daringfeats as a Navy fighter pilot, civilian testpilot, and CIA mercenary, and interviewswith the author and principal, Rolan D.Powell by Walt Andrus, the following arti-cle was composed. Mr. Varner served as aNavy Public Affairs Officer during the lastthirteen years of his naval career.

"There are old pilots and there are boldpilots, but there are no old bold pilots."

The U.S. Navy used slogans like these toemphasize the importance of flight safetywhen Byron D. Varner was an aviationcadet during World War II. That particularone stayed embedded in his mind through-out his flying experience because he sawmany would-be heros kill themselves tryingto be bold pilots. Mr. Varner hadn't thoughtof this slogan for a long time until he metRolan D. Powell, the only "old" pilot heever knew who totally disproved it. Mr.Powell retired as a Lt. Cdr. USNR after notonly serving in World War II aboard the air-craft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown, but also inKorea and Vietnam on other assignments. On November 29, 1996, Rolan celebratedhis seventieth birthday.

The following narrative begins on page72 of the Varner/Powell books.

His parents are relieved to learn thatRolan will be at Naval Air Station, Pasco,Washington, for the next few months. Theytry not to think about his going back to thewar zone, and make him promise to comehome as often as possible on weekends.

Several former shipmates arrive at NASPasco when he does, along with a numberof new pilots untested by war. The Navyselected them to form a new air group andprepare for carrier operations in the Pacific.Rolan looks forward to imparting his exper-tise to the new pilots recently out of flighttraining. It will require daily practice in air

tactics, maneuvers, bombing, strafing, dog-fighting, gunnery, and other tricks of thetrade necessary for air combat. A lot of fly-ing. For certain he wil l try to impress uponthem the importance of survival tactics.

The base has another mission for theexperienced pilots, as well. About 60 milesaway stands the Hanford plant, its atomicactivities known to only a very few. Thesebattle-scarred veterans are to protect thatplant in the event of an air attack. Althoughthey don't know what this is all about, theywill follow orders, as military people aretaught.

The standby aircraft are always armedand ready to defend the plant, although fewpilots seriously believe it wil l ever comeunder enemy attack, given the current stateof Japan's diminishing effectiveness. But,like the shark attack that Rolan neverexpected to face, an air emergency doesoccur.

It is noon time, and no planes are in theair. The bullhorn's jarring sound of GeneralQuarters sends the pilots rushing to the

pilots."

ready room for a quick briefing and on tothe aircraft for immediate takeoff.

Radar had detected a fast-moving objectthat is now in a holding pattern directlyabove the Hanford plant. It is extremelyhigh and Rolan can't see it at first. As theyrapidly increase altitude the pilots all spot itat about the same time and head directly forits position.

None of them can recognize it, but theycan see it well from their vantage point. Ithas a saucer-like appearance, is bright, extremely fast, and very high. The F6F hasan operating ceiling of 37,000 feet, but onthis day they exceed that considerably andstill can't get close enough. .

"What the hell is that?" one pilot yellsover the radio.

"Nothing I've ever seen before," answersanother.

Rolan calls the base to report the situa-tion. They tell him to go higher.

"If we go much higher we can ruin theseengines."

"Blow the engines if you have to, but usefull military power, full throttle injection, maximum, continuous. Go for it!"

Rolan wonders what the pilots will dowhen the engines quit and the tower opera-tor tells them to "glide back towards the air-port and hope that you make it."

Even with the emergency settings, theF6F can't get close enough to determine theexact nature of this object. It doesn't makeany overt moves, gives no signals, just hov-ers there as if observing, staying wellenough out of reach. The pilots can'tbelieve its ability to hover like this. Whensome of the engines begin to fail, and fuelconsumption gets critical, the planes returnto base one by one, and the strange craftdisappears as quickly as it came. It doesn'treturn.

Although a number of people witness thisincident, the local newspaper carries noreport of it in the days that follow. Rolancan only surmise that the governmentstepped in and clamped a lid on the wholeaffair, according to war security measures.

After this episode, the pilots return totheir normal routine of getting ready forcombat.

To obtain more details on this pre-Kenneth Arnold sighting and how suchevents were treated during World War II,Walt Andrus interviewed Rolan Powell, who now resides in Round Rock, Texas, with his lovely wife Donna.

The six F6F "Hellcats" made visual con-tact with the object described by Rolan asthe size of three aircraft carriers side byside, oval shaped, very streamlined like astretched-out egg and pinkish in color.Rolan reported that some kind of vapor wasbeing emitted around the outside edgesfrom portholes or vents. He speculated thatthe vapor was being discharged to form acloud for disguise. The object was observedat noon in a clear sky at an estimated alti-tude of 65,000 feet.

Rolan and his fellow pilots pushed theirF6Fs to 42,000 feet, which was well abovethe aircraft's rated ceiling of 37,000, butthey were unsuccessful in making contactwith this large unknown craft above them. After hovering in a fixed position above theHanford Nuclear Reactor for an additionaltwenty minutes, the object disappearedgoing straight-up as the six Hellcats limpedback to the Pasco Naval Air Station(Washington). Mr. Powell does not knowwhere the other five pilots now live or theirfull names. The squadron consisted of 12veteran fighter pilots, survivors from a for-mer squadron of 45 called Air Group IIIaboard the second U.S.S. Yorktown, fondlyknown as "The Fighting Lady."

When quizzed about the exact date of thesighting, Rolan didn't have his flight logavailable as a reference, but estimated that itwas six weeks before the Japanese surren-der aboard the Battleship Missouri in TokyoBay on September 2, 1945. This wouldplace the sighting during the middle of July1945.

Library research disclosed that theHanford Engineering Works Plant(Richland, Washington) was actually a largeplutonium-production facility constructedadjacent to the Columbia River, using thewater to cool the reactor piles. Opening foroperation in September 1944, the Hanfordsite was a Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) toprovide material for producing atomicbombs. This ultimately led to the droppingof bombs over Hiroshima on August 6,1945, and Nagasaki, on August 9.Hostilities ceased on August 14, 1945.

It is conceivable that unidentified flyingobjects may have had an interest in ournuclear energy program in 1945. Now,Rolan and his fellow Navy fighter pilotsknow what they were guarding at Hanford, which at that time was part of the ultra-secret Manhattan Project.

THE ARGENTINA ENCOUNTER

by Bruno Molon, Richard Elkin and Jimmy Blondet

• jl has been said that a good place to be-• ^Tgin the search for the truth regardingH fcthe UFO enigma is to re-examinepreviously documented investigation cases.Unquestionably, some of the most startlingcases in the history of ufology are the clas-sic CE3s, and even more notably, CE3s in-volving encounters with crashed or landedUFOs and their occupants. While it may bethat with many of these "classics" muchtime and research has already been devoted(Roswell, undoubtedly, being the most glar-ing example of this), other significant caseshave been left to languish in near obscurity.

Though not widely publicized or docu-mented, on May 10, 1950, an extraordinarydiscovery was made by an individual dri-ving through a remote region of Argentinawho happened across a landed disc and itsthree deceased, alien occupants.

The witness in this case, aeronautical en-gineer Dr. Enrico Botha, 45, wrote an ac-count of his experience and sent his manu-script to three different sources: APRO(Aerial Phenomenon Research Organiza-tion), a Swiss UFO magazine, and notedufologist Mr. Leonard Stringfield.Stringfield was sufficiently impressed withthe particulars of this case that he wroteabout it in his book Situation Red: The UFOSiege. He was absolutely convinced of theveracity of Dr. Botha's testimonial and ofthe value of this case to the field of ufology.

What follows are the details of Botha'saccount:

While driving through the remotestretches of the Pampas region in BahiaBlanca Province of eastern Argentina, Dr.Botha saw a metallic-looking disc restingon the ground off to the left of the road. Hestopped the car to observe the disc for a fewmoments, the only discernible activity visi-ble being a flashing light on the top of thecraft's tower.

No type of landing gear was reported vis-ible on the craft, which was in an inclinedposition atop the ground; possibly indicativeof a failed, or emergency, landing.

Botha described the craft as being 32 feetin diameter, with a tower section (with win-

dows) at the top of the craft measuring 6feet in height and an interior height of sevenfeet. He described the outer surface of thedisc as appearing "slippery" and "brilliant,"and though the hull appeared to be of ametallic composition it also exhibited a cu-rious, rubber-like resiliency.

Not witnessing any indication of lifeaboard the fallen craft, Botha approachedand peered inside the object through a tiny, open hatch on the side of the ship. He no-ticed a small orange-white light pulsating atone-second intervals within the ceiling ofthe tower, but the craft still appeared to beempty. With this assumption, Botha crawledinside the disc through the open hatch.

Once inside, Botha noticed two curiousodors: ozone and garlic. As he began

looking around the inside of the craft's inte-rior, he realized it was not, in fact, deserted.

Inside the circular enclosure of the ob-ject's tower section were seated three smallmen, whom Botha described as having veryhuman-like features: About four feet tallwith bright eyes, short grey-chestnut col-ored hair and dark, bronze skin. All threeoccupants were clothed in tight-fitting greyoveralls which exposed only the mens'faces and hands. Their feet were coveredwith boots of some sort. All three of the oc-cupants were dead, their bodies rigid.

One of the occupants was seated in thecenter of the tower with a large panel ofbright instruments in front of him. On top ofthe panel was a rotating sphere of glass orother form of transparent material. In alllikelihood, this occupant was probably thecraft's pilot, as his hands were resting upontwo levers. Also to the right of the pilot wasan apparatus resembling a TV screen.

The other two occupants were recliningon soft, curved couches positioned along thecircular wall of the tower. A third couch re-mained empty.

There were no cables, pipes or other sim-ilar structures witnessed within the tower, but the cabin floor was lined with holes, orvents.

Botha spent a total of five minutes in thecraft, then departed "stunned," as he consid-ered the fate of the fourth, absent crewrhem-ber. Dr. Botha then returned to his car anddrove back to his hotel, about 75 milesaway. He informed several of his friendsthere about his discovery and they decidedto return to the site to take pictures. However, darkness was falling, so it was de-cided that they would wait until morning.

At daybreak they set out to find the space-craft. Searching for the exact spot provedelusive at first until Dr. Botha realized it haddisappeared. Instead, the group found a pileof grey ashes that were still warm to thetouch. They soon discovered that the ashesturned their hands green upon contact. Theyproceeded to siphon off gasoline from the carin order to wash off the residue.

The mystery deepened as the groupsearched for additional clues. As they

turned their gaze to the sky, they observed alarge cigar-shaped object and two smallerdisc-shaped craft hovering near it. Dr. Bothaphotographed the disc that was closest tohim. He took five pictures in all, but onlytwo showed the object clearly. A few sec-onds later, the two discs went towards thelarger object and, apparently, coalesced withit. The cigar-shaped craft then turned blood-red and disappeared quickly from sight.

Weeks later, Dr. Botha experienced skinirritations, fever and blisters. No conclusivediagnosis was reached for his condition

since the green substance was washed offby the gasoline, essentially an antiseptic. While inside the craft, Botha wore green-tinted glasses. The areas where the glassescovered his eyes and where his clothingcovered his skin were left unaffected.

EPILOGUE

For years, Dr. Botha told no one of hisbizarre experience except his immediate cir-cle of friends. Finally, in the late Fall of1954, while living in Caracas, Venezuela, heconfided in Mr. Horatio Gonzales. Mr.Gonzales was APRO's Venezuelan repre-sentative and foremost UFO researcher. Mr.Gonzales revealed the story to a Caracasnewspaper — El Universal — which pub-lished it in January, 1955. Mr. Gonzales no-tified APRO officials in the United States(the Lorenzens) as well as Cincinnati re-searcher Leonard H. Stringfield. Stringfieldwas so intrigued, he requested correspon-dence with the witness. Dr. Botha sentStringfield a letter in April, 1955 describingthe experience, and also sent the pho-tographs.

In 1993 I (Molon) discussed this casewith Len Stringfield at his home inCincinnati. He assured me the case was real— he had seen the photographs and still hadthem in his possession, but did not knowwhere they were. Stringfield was the lastperson left alive with any knowledge of thecase. Now he is also dead.

This case is not a figment of someone'simagination, or a phantom of the literature.Dr. Botha's observations are very importantand provide some information concerningthe inside of the UFOs.

It is pointless to speculate on what killed

with an interesting anecdote and little else. Some of the features stated in the report arecorroborated by other later observations inother cases, such as hull resiliency and basicconfiguration.

258 pages of finely-packed print,Volume 6 (New Series) of the

Journal of UFO Studies is half again asthick as the last issue, which appeared in1994. And the difference isn't merepadding. Here are thick, meaty articles onthe abduction experience, anomalousimages captured on videotape by SpaceShuttle Flight STS-48. the Condon Report,Donald Keyhoe's long and influentialcareer, and the declining coverage of UFOsby The New York Times from 1947 to1995. Did I mention the letters section and ahealthy dollop of book reviews?

In the opening article, "Psychotherapyfor the UFO Abduction Experience," DavidGotlib of Johns Hopkins Hospital examinesboth the extreme skeptical and beliefapproach to the abduction phenomenon andfinds them both wanting, substitutinginstead what he refers to as an agnosticapproach. Although speaking as a therapistand not a UFO investigator, Gotlib'sremarks as to when hypnosis might becalled for are worth quoting at length. In myown practice, he says, "I consider usinghypnosis only when three requirements aremet:

"1. The client has failed to come to termswith the experience through other measures.

"2. The client understands the risks andfundamental limitations of the techniquethat hypnotically refreshed memory is sub-ject to suggestibility, confabulation, andmemory hardening (producing confidencein both true and false memories); that it isnot possible to differentiate a correct froman incorrect recollection on the basis ofvividness, emotional strength, or any otherfactor: and that while hypnosis may help theclient to accommodate and adjust to theexperience, it will not provide proof of theobjective reality of the experience.

"3. The client understands that the thera-peutic intervention is experimental."

Psychologist Stuart Appelle, who recent-ly succeeded Michael Swords as JUFOSeditor, contributes a detailed summary ofthe subject with "The AbductionExperience: A Critical Evaluation of Theoryand Evidence." The author has literallycombed the abduction literature both popu-

lar and scientific with a fine-lined fork tocome up with what is probably the mostconcise overview of the topic any objectivereader could hope for. If you want to knowwhat skeptics, believers and science have allsaid about abductions at one time or anoth-er, you won't find a better starting or endingpoint. To quote a cliche: worth the cost ofadmission alone.

For hard science and equation lovers, there's Jack Kasher's "Anomalous Imageson Videotape from Space Shuttle FlightSTS-48: Examination of the Ice-ParticleExplanation." This is a reworked andexpanded version of an article that was firstpublished in the 1994 MUFON annualsymposium Proceedings and later by theFund for UFO Research. I won't be spoil-ing too much of the suspense if I say thatKasher throws hot water on the ice particletheory.

Previous editor Michael Swords con-tributes two lengthy historical essays: "TheUniversity of Colorado UFO Project: 'TheScientific Study of UFOs'" and "Donald E.Keyhoe and the Pentagon: The Rise ofInterest in the UFO Phenomenon and Whatthe Government Really Knew." The first ofthese is accompanied by Willy Smith's "AReference Guide for the Condon Report,"which offers an analysis and identificationof the individual cases studied by theColorado Project.

The concluding article is "FewerSightings in the National Press: A ContentAnalysis of UFO News Coverage in TheNew York Times, 1947-1995" by JohnHickman, Dale McConkey II, and MatthewBarrett.

Books reviewed (reviewers' names are inparentheses) are Alien Discussions andClose Encounters of the Fourth Kind (byThomas Bullard), Encounter at Buff Ledge(by Richard Haines), The Gods HaveLanded (by Charles Emmons), and Watchthe Skies! (by Mark Rodeghier).

Published by the J. Allen Hynek Centerfor UFO Studies, JUFOS, to the best of myknowledge, remains the world's only sci-entifically refereed UFO journal, whichmeans that articles are submitted for peerreview prior to publication. Highly recom-mended for your own elucidation, and as ameans of contributing to further scientificresearch into the UFO phenomenon.CUFOS's Web page can be found athttp://www.cufos.org/.

you'll know, let me say up frontthat as co-editor and publisher of

The Anomalist, with Patrick Huyghe, I har-bor a certain unabashed prejudice: not sur-prisingly, I think rather highly of it. Wecome out two times a year in a qualitypaperback format and try to pack as manyindividual gems into each issue as we can, either in the form of a new treatment of anold subject, or a subject that you aren't like-ly to see tackled anywhere else in the firstplace.

We cover the entire gamut of so-calledfortean phenomena, which of courseincludes UFOs. This issue we actuallyhave a coup of sorts, "Project Blue Book'sLast Years," an excerpt from the unpub-lished memoirs of Colonel HectorQuintanilla, who directed Blue Book from1963 until it's closing in 1969. Two casesare covered in some detail — Socorro,New Mexico, and the 1966 Michigan"swamp gas" incident. A less than flatter-ing picture of the late J. Allen Hynekemerges, which is hardly surprising giventhat Quintanilla is writing from the AirForce point of view. What surfaces mostclearly, though, is the age-old conflict ofcultures between the military and civilianmindset. In this case it just happened to beover UFOs.

"The Earth's Second Moon," by PaulSchlyter, looks at the question of whether ornot we have a second natural satellite inorbit about our planet, a notion that datesback to at least the mid-1840s.

"Keen on Crop Circles," by England'sMontague Keen, former scientific adviserto the Centre for Crop Circle Studies, sur-veys recent developments in the wheatfields of southern England. Accompaniedby many photographs supplied by RobIrving.

Steve Mizrach's "Wired Spirits" is hardto categorize, which is why we liked it.Basically, it asks the question: Is cyber-space inhabited by disembodied voices andspirits who try to contact us via computersand other electronic equipment?

In "Dangerous Vision: The Phantom ofBroad Mountain, Pennsylvania," GaryMangiacopra examines the grisly, unsolved1925 murder of a young girl and the locallegends that grew up in its wake.

Well known cryptozoologist LorenColeman looks at the famous picture of apurportedly unknown South American"ape" taken by explorer Francois de Loys in

1920, and concludes that it is probably of aspider monkey. How did it get mystified? Can you spell racism?

"Screams from the Stream" is byMichael Cremo, co-author of the contro-versial Forbidden Archeology: The HiddenHistory of the Human Race, and showshow unkindly orthodox science takes tooutsiders and non-mainstream ideas. Soundfamiliar?

"An Egyptian State of Mind" is anexcerpt from Colin Wilson's newest book,From Atlantis to the Sphinx, as yet unpub-lished in this country. If you think sexplayed a major role in human evolution, so,too, did magic and religion.

Finally, there are comments on "TheMysterious Phenomenon of Loading" byBetty Eisner and Dr. Larry Dossey. Loadingis what happens when a second party, notnecessarily in physical contact with thefirst, takes on and carries the latter's physi-cal or psychical symptoms.

Opening commentary, "Nine Reasons toFear the Paranormal." is provided byMichael Grosso. author of MillenniumMyth. Our Web page is athttp://www.cloud9.net/~patrick/anomalist.

A ufolpgical saw has it that consistencybespeaks verity. Put another way, the

repetition of specific sequence and detailin abductee's accounts supposedly.augursfor the reality of the experience. FromMUFON's own Abduction TranscriptionProject, however, we know that a consider-able variety of abductors and assistantshave been reported over the years, fromtraditional "greys" and "Nords," to entitiesresembling insects, reptiles and other bio-logical "hybrids" or crossbreeds, not tospeak of the occasional unique entity.Throw in the whole of the UFO literature, with its space-suited dwarfs, hairy giantsand trolls, metallic robots, and the occa-sional absolutely human humanoid, andwhere does that leave the issue of consis-tency as an affirmative argument?Somewhat adrift in space, I would sup-pose.

These and other thoughts ran throughmy mind as I read Patrick Huyghe's TheField Guide'to Extraterrestrials: A com-plete overview of alien life/arms based onactual accounts and sightings, illustratedby Harry Trumbore. Some 50 "classic"cases are covered (and individually illus-trated) here, hardly any two of which areexactly alike, even though said entitieshave been divided into only four major cat-egories: Humanoid, Animalian, Roboticand Exotic.

The understated implications here areenormous. Either the previously presumedpredominant greys are capable of appear-ing in any form at will or they aren't. Butif they can shape-shift at whim, then whyassume that their grey appearance is anymore legitimate or authentic than any oftheir other options? At the same time, per-haps disparity of appearance argues for apsychological interpretation of UFO closeencounters? (What's more individual thanbrain-embedded human consciousness?)It's one thing, after all, to argue that we'rebeing visited by a specific species of alien,as opposed to being repeatedly invaded byevery Tom, Dick and Harry in the galacticneighborhood. Star Trek aside, space travelamong so many different extraterrestrialcivilizations can't be that easy, can it?

Thought-provoking and recommended.

Bright Planets (Evening Sky):Mars, in Virgo, increases its brightness during the monthfrom magnitude 0.5 to -0.2 as it nears opposition to the Sun.Much in the news lately, our famous planetary neighborrises in the E before 11 PM on the 1st and an hour and ahalf earlier by month's end. It advances across the southernsky during the night.Jupiter (magnitude -1.9), in Sagittarius, is visible only dur-ing the first few days of January, very low in the WSW atdusk.Saturn (1.0), in Pisces, stands in the SSW at dusk and setslater about 10 PM in mid-January. The lunar crescent ap-pears near the planet on the 13th.

Bright Planets (Morning Sky):Venus (-3.9) rises in the ESE about 6 AM in midmonth butstays very low in the twilight sky, f inal ly vanishing into thesolar glare by month's end. A thin crescent Moon hoversabove the bright world on January 7. After the first week ofthe month, the planet Mercury appears near Venus, moving3° above it on the 12th. Use binoculars.Mars moves to a point high in the SW at dawn.

Comet Hale-Bopp:Discovered in July 1995 by amateur astronomers Alan Haleand Thomas Bopp, Comet Hale-Bopp should surpass lastyear's Hyakutake by a wide margin when it achieves maxi-mum brightness in March and April. Unlike the latter ob-ject, Hale-Bopp is a giant with an icy nucleus estimatedanywhere from about 10 to 25 miles across (compared withHyakutake's l-to-2-mile nucleus). Also the newcomer hasbeen spewing lots of dust, promising a much brighter tail .In January find an unobstructed eastern horizon and look al-most due E between about 5:45 and 6 AM. Moving NEthrough the constellation Aquila. the comet rises tailfirst, appearing low in the sky but increasing its altitude duringthe month from about 4° to 20° above the horizon at latitude40° N. (Moonlight hampers observations late in the month.)If the fuzzy object follows the latest revised predictions (asthis is being written), it should attain 3rd magnitude inJanuary and stand out to the naked eye if the sky is darkenough. Binoculars will help. While comets are notoriously fickle—last fall Hale-Boppwas running about a magnitude behind original predic-tions—this one still has the potential to put on a memorableshow in the spring.

Moon Phases:Last quarter—January 1

New moon—January 8

The Stars:At 9 PM this month the observer with binoculars is re-warded with a number of special objects in the heavens.Moving from E to W, first focus on a faint smudge betweenLeo and Gemini—the wedgeshaped star cluster called theBeehive. Next, go to the showpiece of the winter sky,Orion, and note that the hazy star in the Hunter's swordturns out to be the famous Orion Nebula, a glowing gas anddust cloud where new stars are born. In Taurus examine thebeautiful star field of the Bull 's face, the V-shaped Hyadescluster. And nearby don't forget the outstanding Pleiadescluster. Finally, sweep to Andromeda's twin row of starsand find an elongated patch of light, the AndromedaGalaxy, another star system similar to our own Milky Way.The spiral system in Andromeda glows from a distance of 2million light years.

CROP CIRCLES REPORTIn the summer of 1992, Project Argus investigated oneof the most remarkable mysteries of the century, thesudden and baffling appearance of hundreds of huge, magnificent shapes—dubbed "crop circles"—in thefields of England each summer. Made of grain flat-tened methodically to the ground in intricate patterns, they were a form of landscape art which quickly at-tracted worldwide attention. But the "artist" was un-known. Where did they come from? What agent orforce routinely generated them overnight? Could theybe products of something other than human activity? It seems appropriate to seek to answer such questionswith the instruments and methods of science.
