    1. Introduction 1

    1. INTRODUCTION1. INTRODUCTION1. INTRODUCTION1. INTRODUCTIONThis study presents an analysis of morpho-syntactic Tense, Aspect, odality, and

    !"identiality mar#in$ %henceforth& TA!' in a sample of () *outh American indi$enous

    lan$ua$es %henceforth& *AI+s' ith re$ard to typolo$ical, $eo$raphical, and $enealo$ical

distriutions.1This chapter introduces the study and ser"es to emed it in the current

research on *outh American lin$uistics. An o"er"ie of the structure of the oo# is $i"en at

the end of this chapter. The main $oals of this thesis are tofold&

    %i' to present a typolo$ical profile of morpho-syntactic Tense, Aspect, odality,and !"identiality mar#in$ in a sample of () *outh American indi$enouslan$ua$es,

%ii' to unco"er $enealo$ical and $eo$raphical relationships of *AI+s accordin$ tothe TA! profile ith special focus on lan$ua$e contact.

This is the first comprehensi"e and comparati"e study of TA! in *outh American

lan$ua$es in a road sample and it ill hopefully ser"e as a asis for oth detailed studies of

TA! cate$ories in *AI+s as ell as those of a $loal typolo$ical nature. A uestionnaire

as desi$ned for Tense, Aspect, odality, and !"identiality, and the data of () lan$ua$es

ere entered in full, ith "arious additional lan$ua$es for specific sutopics %see section

    /.0./'.

Until recently, there as a discrepancy eteen the enormous ran$e of *AI+s and their

deficient documentation, ut in the last decades the increasin$ numer of hi$h-uality

descriptions has made it possile to conduct lar$e scale research on *AI+s. A numer of

research uestions ha"e arisen, most prominently ith re$ard to the hi$h $enealo$ical

di"ersity and the spread of certain lan$ua$e families, ut also to the typolo$ical

characteristics and ho they contrast ith other parts of the orld. or instance, the most

    recent count y 2ammarstr3m %/445, appendi6' presents 111 lan$ua$e families %or isolates'

in *outh America. or comparison, there are only )) families in !urasia %iid.'.

The nature of the topic, the methodolo$y, and the lan$ua$e sample present their on

sets of prolems, and it is important to list them here. irst, the cate$ories of Tense, Aspect,

odality, and !"identiality stand out y their closely connected semantic relationships and

the difficulties to demarcate the cate$ories from each other. *econd, the lan$ua$e sample is

a con"enience sample and therefore any e6trapolation on the asis of the results must e

ta#en ith caution. Third, the "ery fact that there are at least () different sources ith

different opinions of terminolo$y y the authors that ha"e I ha"e to reconcile ith my on

chosen definitions. ourth, e"en thou$h mostly ell documented lan$ua$es ere chosen,

the a"ailale $rammatical descriptions are often not sufficiently precise.
