Samp darter – rare fish. Zekiah’s swamp has some of the largest populations in the state

Rainbow Snake. A beautiful and very rare stream dwelling snake. It apparently eats almost exclusively eels. In MD they are only found in Charles County and were thought to be extirpated until 2007 when someone found one.

Dragonflies – there are many rare species of dragonflies in MD. Charles County (especially Zekiah’s Swamp) has lots of them. The young (larval) dragonflies live in freshwater streams and are predators on other insects and sometimes fish and tadpoles too.

Spotted turtle. One of the state’s “Greatest Conservation Need” species. It is fairly abundant in wooded swamps of Charles County

Upland Chorus frogs are only found on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and are hard to find, but are abundant in some parts of Charles County
