MISS TEMPLE CITY SEEKS TO DEFEND SHADWELL TURF MILE CROWNBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

There will likely only be a cou-ple more of these moments

with Miss Temple City for trainer Graham Motion's Herringswell Stables—the anticipation of get-ting the multiple grade 1 winner ready for another top-level try and the nervous energy that builds as she steps into a starting gate.

Come Nov. 6 inside the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion, the daughter of Temple City will enter the auction house with her accomplishments splashed across a catalog page for some deep-pocketed buyer to try to obtain.

Though Motion will almost certainly get sentimental when that reality crashes upon him, he hesitates to use the term "bittersweet" for any achievement the 5-year-old mare may earn during her final month in his care. That she was left in training after a championship-level 2016 campaign, which produced three grade 1 wins, was a gift her conditioner is beyond grateful for.

That he gets to lead her over Oct. 7 for one more run at the venue she made history at last season is a prize in itself.

"I feel very fortunate that the guys kept her in training this year. They didn't have to do that," Motion said of co-owner and breeder Bob Feld, whose The Club Racing owns Miss Temple City in

partnership with Sagamore Farm and Needle In A Haystack. "I feel like this year was a bonus year. Let's put it that way.

"And I think, with what she's done, we have nothing to lose at this point with taking on the boys."

The boys had nothing for Miss Temple City at Keeneland last year, which sent her into the record books. She became the first female runner to capture both the Maker's 46 Mile Stakes (G1T) in the spring and the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (G1T) last October. Having recently gotten back in the win column after a first half of the year full of starts and stops, Miss Temple

City will aim to duplicate her best self once more this Saturday against 13 male rivals in the $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile.

Depth-laden as the turf female ranks are, Miss Temple City will add another magical stamp to her résumé should she put her trials of this season behind her and prevail over a field that includes grade 1 winners Mondialiste, American Patriot, and Divisidero.

After missing training time in the winter and being scratched out of a couple spots due to soft ground, Miss Temple City didn't make her seasonal debut until she was shipped to Royal Ascot, where she faded to 13th in the June 20 Queen Anne Stakes (G1).

Trainer Graham Motion hopes Miss Temple City returns to her best form in the Oct. 7 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland

When her connections tried to get her back on form with a easier race for her next outing, the 1 1/8-mile distance of the July 30 WinStar Matchmaker Stakes (G3T) at Monmouth Park proved too much and Miss Temple City ended up third.

Things finally took a turn in her favor Sept. 9 going one mile, when she called upon her back class to run down Zipessa in the stretch of the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes (G3T) and prevail by a neck. It has taken far longer than originally planned, but Motion feels he has his charge on script once more.

"I think going to England without a race was very tough on her mentally and physically, and it took her a while to get over that," Motion said. "I thought Kentucky Downs was kind of what we needed to do. We needed to get her in a better environment—in a better spot going the distance we know she likes.

"We chose to go to (to the Matchmaker) partly with the idea of finding an easier spot and testing out the mile and an eighth again. But we know her well enough by now to know the mile is her distance. Perhaps we shouldn't have gone to England and perhaps we shouldn't have gone to Monmouth. But it seems like we've regrouped and kind of got her back on track."

Miss Temple City has not finished worse than second in four starts at Keeneland. While the big mare is aiming to put herself in position for another run in the Nov. 4 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) before being offered at the Fasig-Tipton November sale, one of her main rivals Saturday has a giant albatross he is diligently trying to shake from his neck.

Heart to Heart has been a warrior in his 30 starts. He's earned 13 wins—nine of them graded—with $1,354,870 in earnings. What has been just out of reach for the Brian Lynch trainee is a grade 1 victory,

as he is winless in five tries at the top level, with a chunk of his heartbreak coming at Keeneland.

The 6-year-old son of English Channel finished second behind Miss Temple City in the 2016 Maker's 46 Mile and had to settle for bridesmaid honors in that spot again this year, when he was caught by a neck at the wire by American Patriot. His frontrunning style and ability to carve the turns like he's on rails earned him a 1 1/4-length win in the Sept. 4 Bernard Baruch Handicap (G2T) at Saratoga Race Course last time out.

And if he can get a bit a breather on the front end Saturday, Lynch has reason to hope he will finally get to celebrate his charge's best day.

"He worked super the other day and... let's hope the stars line up," Lynch said of the popular bay. "Definitely, there is a lot more heat in the kitchen early in the mile, where the further he goes, the more he gets to dictate his own terms. But handicapping this race, I don't know that there is a lot of speed in there, so (he) might be the lone speed.

"I think if he's able to get this done, the configuration of the Del Mar turf (for the Breeders' Cup Mile) would really suit him—tight turns, short stretch."

American Patriot will attempt to join Wise Dan (2014) and Miss Temple City (2016) as the only horses to win the Maker's 46 Mile and Shadwell Turf Mile in the same year. The 4-year-old War Front colt is winless in two starts since his spring awakening, though. He finished 11th in the Queen Anne Stakes and sixth in the Aug. 12 Fourstardave Handicap (G1T) at Saratoga.

Divisidero, winner of the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1T) both in 2016 and in May, cuts back to eight furlongs after off-the-board runs in the 1 1/4-mile Arlington Million XXXV Stakes (G1T) and Woodford Reserve Manhattan Stakes (G1T). Mondialiste ran fourth in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes (G1T) Sept. 16 and will seek his first win since the 2016 Arlington Million. BH

FRANK STRONACH TO PUT ADENA SPRINGS UP FOR SALEBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Frank Stronach is shifting the focus of his breeding program away from Kentucky and toward Califor-

nia and Maryland, where his privately owned company The Stronach Group operates racetracks. As part of this change, Stronach announced Oct. 4 he will be put-ting his 1,800-acre Adena Springs property near Paris, Ky., up for sale.

"We have nothing against Kentucky and will continue to have presence there," Stronach said. "But we need to come up with a program to have more California-breds. I will be in touch with the breeding community and the head of the breeders association to see what we can do. Maybe better stallions are a part of that. The fields are small and it hurts the business. We need more California-breds."

Regarding the Kentucky stallion operation, Stronach said he is open to leasing all the stallions to whoever buys the farm. He said he intends to relocate his mares and his employees to his 550-acre farm near Midway, Ky.

Adena Springs currently stands nine stallions at its Paris facility, including Awesome Again, Fort Larned, Ghostzapper, Mucho Macho Man, and Macho Uno. Ghostzapper ranks fifth on the BloodHorse.com general leading sire list through Oct. 3.

"I could also move some of the stallions to Midway," he said. "I'm flexible."

While Stronach said he intends to set up breeding operations in both California and Maryland, finding a way to reverse what he sees as a desperate situtation in California is foremost on his mind.

"We are making improvements left and right, but we need to take a serious look at what we can do together, with the horsemen, with the racing commission, and with the breeders, to improve the racing in California," he said.

Regarding Maryland, Stronach said he sees an opportunity upgrade the quality of the breeding program.

"Horse have great standing in Maryland because it is one of the oldest racing communities," he said. "We need to improve the quality of the horses and the racing facilities."

Stronach added that no major changes are expected for his horse operations in Florida or Ontario. BH

KEEN ICE STANDS OUT IN JOCKEY CLUB GOLD CUPBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Without Gun Runner or Arrogate to contend with, Donegal Racing and Calumet Farm's Keen Ice

stands out in the seven-horse field entered for the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) Oct. 7 at Belmont Park.

The 5-year-old son of Curlin has built a multimillion-dollar career out of running second or third behind America's best runners of the last couple of years—American Pharoah, California Chrome, Arrogate, and Gun Runner—but he's also repeatedly proved he's a worthy competitor.

Keen Ice shook the racing world when he beat Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the 2015 Travers Stakes (G1) and nailed another graded stakes win July 8, when he took the Suburban Handicap (G2) over multiple grade 1 and Canadian classic winner Shaman Ghost.

"We're looking forward to getting him back at a mile and a quarter," said trainer Todd Pletcher, who has finished second in the Jockey Club Gold Cup on five occasions and is looking for his first win in the race. "He's been training well and we hope he can give us the same kind of effort he did in the Suburban."

Because the Jockey Club Gold Cup is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), a victory would position Keen Ice for his third consecutive start in the $6 million race. He finished fourth to American Pharoah in 2015 and third behind Arrogate and California Chrome last year.

Paul Pompa Jr.'s Rally Cry will try 1 1/4 miles for the first time following a solid pair of efforts at 1 1/8 miles this summer at Saratoga Race Course. The 4-year-old colt by Uncle Mo received a personal-best 119 Equibase Speed Figure for his 8 3/4-length victory Aug. 6 in the Alydar Stakes at Saratoga and came back on closing weekend to finish second to Gun Runner in the Sept. 2 Woodward Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1).

"I thought he ran very well in the Alydar at a mile and an eighth, and if he can reproduce that kind of race, I don't think the distance will be much of an issue," said Pletcher, who trains Rally Cry and a third Gold Cup contender in Destin. "(Rally Cry) seems like the kind of horse that, when he's able to get into a good rhythm, he's able to keep going."

Destin, 4-year-old son of Giant's Causeway, will make his third start off a nine-month layoff. He comes into the race off a win in a 1 1/8-mile allowance race and is expected to relish the additional distance, according to Pletcher.

A pair of sophomores will face older rivals for the first time on Saturday, including Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G2) winner Good Samaritan. By the late Harlan's Holiday, Good Samaritan made the switch from turf to dirt a successful one at Saratoga, where he took the Jim Dandy by 4 3/4 lengths July 29 for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.

Exiting a fifth-place finish in the Aug. 26 Travers Stakes (G1), Good Samaritan will don blinkers for the first time in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

"He came out of the Travers in good order and he's been training well," Mott said. "He's had plenty of time, and I guess sooner or later he's got to meet his elders, so Saturday is the day. Hopefully the blinkers will place him a little closer in the race. I don't think it's going to make a huge difference, but maybe it'll put him a couple lengths closer, which would be great."

Good Samaritan will be joined by fellow 3-year-old Pavel, who will make his fourth start for Reddam Racing and trainer Doug O'Neill. The lightly raced colt by Creative Cause is coming off a six-length victory Sept. 4 in the grade 3 Smarty Jones Stakes at Parx Racing, where he earned a 110 Equibase Speed Rating.

Rounding out the field for the Jockey Club Gold Cup is New York-bred Diversify, an impressive 11 1/2-length winner of the Evan Shipman Stakes last time out for Lauren and Ralph Evans and trainer Rick Violette Jr., and multiple graded stakes-placed Highland Sky, who will try dirt for the first time for owners Joyce Young, Gerald McManis, and Jerrie Stewart McManis, and trainer Barclay Tagg. LONE SAILOR STEPS UP FOR BREEDERS' FUTURITYBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

What horses do on the racetrack can pull a trainer into any number of unexpected directions, but

when it all comes together, it's a special kind of satisfy-ing to get it right.

Trainer Tom Amoss' plan for GMB Racing's Lone Sailor was never to run him on grass, but he saw an opportunity Sept. 3, a day after the Majestic Warrior colt was left out as an also-eligible in a seven-furlong race on the dirt at Saratoga Race Course.

On that Sunday at Saratoga, Amoss knew a pair of facts. The first was that there was a 100% chance of rain. The second was that, if it rained hard enough and given the way Saratoga is configured, the 1 1/16-mile grass test Lone Sailor was entered in would move to seven furlongs on the main track, which is what he wanted all along.

The rain came, the race moved to the sloppy dirt, and Lone Sailor took it from there. The bay colt

dominated a field of eight others to win by 11 lengths under a hand ride from jockey Florent Geroux.

"Of course after the race, you're thinking about the future," Amoss said. "The thing about each race is that it leads you in a direction. You're always setting up your plan based on how they've run and what you need to do for them to run their best race."

Amoss is now hoping all will work out as planned for Lone Sailor's next start in the $500,000 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland Oct. 7.

"It's going to be about who can be successful going two turns and who is ready for primetime," Amoss said. "Not all 2-year-olds at this time are ready for that, and that might include mine. A lot of times it is too much for them."

Almost everything was a bit too much for Lone Sailor in his debut but Amoss had plenty of reason to believe his colt could move forward off a fifth-place finish Aug. 12, where he was 7 1/2 lengths behind the winner. He took dirt while others who ran better didn't, he wasn't quite used to the experience in the Saratoga paddock yet, and his trainer knew he had the talent from what he showed in the morning.

"The ultimate improvement in racing is from the first to second start," Amoss said. "Breaking from the gate, getting used to horses alongside them, getting nervous in the paddock—you can't simulate all of that in the morning. If you don't think that horse is quite ready, that first start can be a dress rehearsal. So when he had a race that looked better than it appeared on paper—he learned a lot from that."

If Lone Sailor continues to learn from his romp in the Saratoga slop, he could be right there with other entrants

in the Breeders' Futurity who already have run against stakes competition, and could once again fill his trainer up with the pride he felt Sept.3.

"I bought him as a yearling, so it's one of those situations where I've had the opportunity to watch (every step) since we got him," Amoss said of the $120,000 purchase from Gainesway's consignment to the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale. "It felt really good to win like that with one I bought at the sale. It's a sense of pride for me to get one like that for (owners Gayle and Tom Benson)."

Lone Sailor will have no easy task, however, if wants to return to the winner's circle. Twelve other juveniles are entered in the 1 1/16-mile test, and several have the advantage of stakes experience.

Free Drop Billy and Givemeaminit were only a head apart in the Hopeful Stakes (G1) last time out Sept.

4 at Saratoga—second and third, respectively—and a neck behind winner Sporting Chance. Albaugh Family Stables' Free Drop Billy also came in second in the July 22 Sanford Stakes (G3), which followed a three-length debut win June 15 at Churchill Downs for trainer Dale Romans.

Lothenbach Stables' Captivating Moon also placed in his stakes start, the Sept. 9 Arlington-Washington Futurity on the Arlington International Racecourse synthetic main track, but only two in the field have stakes wins.

Ten City appeared to be a colt on the rise following his 1 1/2-length win in the Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) at Churchill June 30, but has finished third in his last two outings—the Ellis Park Juvenile Aug. 20 and the Iroquois (G3) Sept. 16 back at Churchill.

Invading from the South is Ready Prospector, a two-time stakes winner at Evangeline Downs, who will take a step into significantly deeper water in the Breeders' Futurity. BH

EIGHT YEARLINGS TOP SEVEN FIGURES AT TATTERSALLSBy BloodHorse Staff

Eight yearlings sold for 1 million guineas or more on the Oct. 4 second day of Book 1 of

the Tattersalls October yearling sale, taking the number of seven-figure lots to 12 during the first two days of the three-day auction.

Last year, there were nine sold for more than a million during the entire sale.

The seven figure octet was comprised of five Dubawi yearlings, two by Galileo, and one by Frankel. The second day saw a total of 114 lots realize 33,724,000 guineas (US$46,915,155), a rise of 28% on 2016, while the average and median rose 47% and 33% to 295,825 guineas ($411,537) and 160,000 guineas ($222,584), respectively.

Leading the way was the first foal of the champion race mare Sky Lantern, whose group 1 victories included the Qipco One Thousand Guineas, Coronation Stakes, Moyglare Stud Stakes, and Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes. Her yearling colt (Lot 222) by Dubawi, who was consigned by Highclere Stud on behalf of Rockcliffe Stud's Keswick family, was knocked down to M.V. Magnier for 2,000,000 guineas ($2,782,300) after he saw off Qatar Racing's David Redvers, trainer Roger Varian, and agent Alastair Donald.

"We are obviously delighted," said Ed Sackville, manager for the Keswick family, and purchaser of Sky Lantern as a yearling. "We have a policy of selling the colts and keeping the fillies, and while we'd liked to have raced this horse ourselves, it is wonderful that he has sold so well. Sky Lantern had a Dubawi colt this year and is in foal to Frankel, so we've plenty to look forward to."

"He is out of a brilliant race mare who was a champion 2-year-old and who went on to win the One Thousand Guineas and the Coronation Stakes and become a champion 3-year-old," said Magnier, who bought the horse on behalf of a partnership including

Mayfair Speculators. "She was a very quick filly. We are all about finding the right horse."

One of the most exciting pedigrees in the catalog was the Galileo filly out of Prix Saint-Alary (G1) winner Vadawina, whose foals include group 2 winner Vadamar as well as this season's JRA Tyros Stakes (G3) winner The Pentagon, who is the early favorite for next year's Epsom Derby (G1) at 10-1.

Consigned by David and Diane Nagle's Barronstown Stud, the filly (Lot 281) caught the attention of Narvick International's Emmanuel de Seroux and Broadhurst Agency's Laurent Benoit but neither of the pair could match U.S. agent Justin Casse whose bid of 1,550,000 guineas ($2,156,280) secured the prize.

"She is a collector's item," said Casse. "She is for a U.S. client who has had horses in the U.S. for a long time, but this is his first foray into racing in Europe. She will stay in Europe.

"There are four or five sires in the world that everyone wants, and Galileo is top of that list," Casse continued. "With her pedigree page she has great residual value and with The Pentagon such a prospect we could have a couple of fun years." BH

SIRE POWER, BREEDER INCENTIVES AFFECT F-T MIDLANTICBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

Lucrative incentives designed to encourage people to breed, own, and race in-state are an attractive

selling point for Maryland- and Pennsylvania-breds at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic yearling sale.

Marshall Silverman, this year's leading consignor, said he saw a few trainers shopping specifically for those kinds of horses.

"I had a couple of local Maryland trainers and all they wanted were Maryland-breds. I had some local Pennsylvania trainers who just wanted to see the Pennsylvania-breds," he said. "Not all of them—most of them just want to see a good horse."

While only three of the sale's top 10 hips, all of which brought at least $125,000, were foaled in Kentucky, all 10 were by Kentucky sires.

When asked what would happen if a Mid-Atlantic sire broke out at the top level, Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sales director Paget Bennett quickly replied, "it would be awesome."

"Back in the day we had the Allen's Prospects, the Two Punches, and the Not for Loves. That's what we're hoping, that we see something come back around," she said.

"With El Padrino's weekend that he had (two stakes winners Sept. 30), he had some sell well. The Super Ninety Nines, they sold well. Hopefully they'll perform well on the track here next May and maybe we'll be onto something. Hopefully we can get some new stuff that keeps everybody breeding their mares here in Maryland instead of feeling that they have to go to Kentucky."

Silverman echoed Bennett's comments and said many Mid-Atlantic sires are young and the ability of their progeny is still unknown, which has an effect on where people send their mares and in turn, what brings big money at sales.

"I think (the Mid-Atlantic market is) a little upbeat right now, but I think people need to breed up," he said. "Some of these new young sires are standing in Maryland. Maryland, right now, doesn't really have any established sires.

"Right now the better stallions have died and you've got a lot of young horses coming in like Golden Lad and Bourbon Courage and even in Pennsylvania like Uncle Lino, but they're young and we don't know what they're going to do, and nobody's going to spend a whole lot of money on those horses until they see if they can run. So your Maryland-breds that are by (stallions like) Shanghai Bobby, they're kind of fashionable right now and they're the ones that (buyers are) going to jump on."

One related issue the consignor sees is condensed racing in the area. Dates at only a handful of venues cause people to race out of state, he said.

"One of the problems we have right now in Maryland is we used to have an introductory level to get people in the game when Timonium used to run 40 days," Silverman added. "Now it's 7 days and you've only got Pimlico and Laurel, and they want to close (Pimlico) down. We used to have Laurel, Pimlico, Timonium, and Bowie."

But overall, Silverman thinks buyers can find standouts in Maryland and be rewarded down the road.

"There's money to be made (at the Midlantic sales)," he said. "We need to bring up our owner base and I think everybody will do better." BH

DESPITE SUMMER STORMS, HANDLE AND PURSES SHOW GROWTHBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Despite a stormy summer that shelved a handful of race days, the changes in average purses, han-

dle, and field size were all in positive territory for the third quarter of the year nationally.

Average wagering per race day showed the highest percent change for the quarter, growing 5.85% to $1,995,133. The spike in wagering was a sharp contrast to a year ago, when third quarter average wagering per race day dipped by 0.13% compared with the corresponding quarter of 2015.

Field size also ticked up for September and for the third quarter, growing 1.7% for the month and 0.46% for the quarter. Year-to-date, however, field size is tracking below 2016 at 7.59.

Average purses per race day grew a robust 6.15% for September and was, again, a big change from September of 2016, when the average was down 0.71% compared with September of 2015. The year-to-date average purse per race day is $227,436, up 2.27% for the same period of 2016. BH

FARRELL BULLET FIRES UP CATALANO CONFIDENCEBy Michael Adolphsont @AdolphsonRacing

Wayne Catalano is not one to get down too quick-ly when things do not go his way. A three-time

Breeders' Cup winner, the New Orleans native knows how to take it easy on racing's rollercoaster. So when his stable star Farrell returned to the races with a subpar effort as the 2-1 favorite in Churchill Downs' listed $100,000 Dogwood Stakes Sept. 23, he did not panic. Instead, he took the comeback effort in stride and remains optimistic about the three-time grade 2 winner's future, including a 2018 campaign.

Breaking from post 4 in the field of nine sophomore fillies, Farrell sat three lengths back in fourth before going wide on the far turn in the seven-furlong Dogwood over the main track, and backing up to fifth. The half sister to grade 1 winners Carpe Diem and J. B.'s Thunder was beaten 10 lengths under Channing Hill, her regular rider and Catalano's son-in-law.

"The reason we ran in there was because we really wanted to get a race in her and didn't want to wait until Keeneland," Catalano explained. "She wasn't cranked up and I wanted to get that out of the way. She's a hot-blooded thing, as you know, and I didn't want to bring her back in a tough race, but I also wanted to get her going again.

"It was also a very hot day and she ran under the lights for the first time, so she had a lot of reasons to run like she did. She's not 100% fit, but this will help her get back on track. She had a lot thrown at her that we didn't plan on, but she learned. She's a special filly and we are trying to get her to where we want her to be and that's the bottom line."

On the morning of Oct. 4, Farrell flashed the brilliance Catalano has grown to admire. Going out in the first set, the daughter of Malibu Moon breezed a bullet half-mile in :47 under little urging from Hill, the best of 30 other moves at the distance.

"I am very, very pleased with the work," Catalano said. "I honestly have not seen her work any better than that, so the race definitely did her good. Channing said, and I think, she's the best she's ever been, so I'm happy. We'll see what our options are. I'd like to point to the (grade 2) Falls City (at Churchill Downs) in November. The main thing was the first race is out of the way and we can decide if we'll have a race between that and when she takes on older fillies (in the Falls City)."

Another reason for Catalano's high spirits is the direction of his stable in recent months. After commencing 2017 lower on horseflesh than desired,

he has slowly added some promising pupils to his care. An older horse who may be familiar to followers of the 2016 Triple Crown trail is Susan Moulton's Zulu, a good-looking bay son of Bernardini who commenced his career with a pair of smart Gulfstream AN

Park wins for Coolmore partners and trainer Todd Pletcher before finishing second to Mohaymen in the Fountain of Youth (G2) and 12th as the 2-1 choice in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) won by Brody's Cause.

On the sidelines from then until December, Zulu only managed one win from four Gulfstream starts upon return—a 2 3/4-length tally in the restricted Tamarac Stakes going seven furlongs Dec. 18—and was subsequently sold to Moulton for $107,000 at Fasig-Tipton's 2017 summer selected horses of racing age sale. After seven works, Zulu returned to the races in the $100,000 Ack Ack (G3) Sept. 30 and finished seventh of nine.

"He's kind of in the same boat, except we couldn't get a race for him," he explained. "The two-other-than (allowance) and the restricted stakes didn't go, so we had to throw in him a graded stakes. He needed the race and hadn't run since April. He's sharp. We just have to find a good spot to get his confidence up, but he came out of the race good."

All three of Catalano's Breeders' Cup trophies have come from juvenile races—Dreaming of Anna in the 2006 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on the Churchill Downs dirt, Stephanie's Kitten in the 2011 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G2T) on the Churchill grass, and She Be Wild in the 2009 Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies over Santa Anita Park's old synthetic Pro-Ride surface—and he

could end up with another talented upstart at the World Championships if all goes well.

TOLO Thoroughbreds' Breaking Beauty is aiming toward Keeneland's $150,000 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (G3T) Oct. 11, a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" event for the Juvenile Fillies Turf. A winner in her lone start, going gate-to-wire in a Sept. 4 one-mile turf maiden special weight at Ellis Park, the daughter of Into Mischief has posted two bullet drills for Catalano.

"I really like her and we're excited about her," Catalano said. "We're trying to get into the Jessamine. I think she could run well there. She was very good in her win at Ellis and has the talent."

Breaking Beauty is out of German champion Que Belle. A Canadian-bred daughter of Seattle Dancer who won five of 11, Que Belle won the Preis der Diana-Deutsches (German Oaks, G2) and Henckel-Rennen (German One Thousand Guineas, G2), while also finishing eighth in the Pientre Celebre's 1997 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1), a mere length behind Swain. Breaking Beauty's best sibling thus far is Osidy, a grade 3 winner for B. Wayne Hughes and trainer Richard Mandella from the same Storm Cat sire line.

It could be a big opening week at Keeneland for Catalano. In addition to Breaking Beauty, he also has three starters in other Breeders' Cup preps. Chief among them is the sophomore stakes winner Uncontested, who shortens up in the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (G2) against older horses. He also has One Liz in the First Lady Stakes (G1) and and Christian C in the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1T). BH

CHARLES AND SUSAN CHU CHOSEN AS NEW OWNER OF THE YEARBy BloodHorse Staff

OwnerView announced Oct. 4 that Charles and Susan Chu, who race un-

der Baoma Corporation, have been chosen as the 2017 New Owner of the Year, pre-sented by Fasig-Tipton. The award honors a new Thoroughbred owner who has been successful in the sport and has had a posi-tive impact on the industry.

The award will be presented during the fourth Thoroughbred Owner Conference, scheduled for Oct. 30-Nov. 1 in Del Mar, California.

The Chus are most widely known as the owners of Drefong, who won the 2016 TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) and was subsequently named champion sprinter. Since becoming racehorse owners, they have campaigned graded stakes winners including Chitu, Faypien, and Lord Simba. They are also significant supporters of Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farms.

The New Owner of the Year Award has been previously presented to Sol Kumin and LNJ Foxwoods stable.

Attendees at the upcoming owner conference will enjoy three days of conference presentations, a dinner at the Hilton San Diego/Del Mar, multiple

opportunities to network with panelists and industry personnel, and the option to attend the Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 3-4 at Del Mar.

Jeff Fager, the award-winning executive producer of CBS News' "60 Minutes" and a Thoroughbred owner, will deliver the keynote address.

PINHOOK SUCCESS HIGHLIGHT OF READY2RACE SALEBy Alastair Bull

Thoroughbred auctions have been strong in Aus-tralia this year, but it wasn't all easy at the Inglis

Ready2Race sale of 2-year-olds in training. The average and median for the Oct. 4 sale at

Oaklands Junction near Melbourne were up on last year, but it was on a much smaller offering, with 158 cataloged compared to 256 last year. Even with the smaller catalog, the clearance rate was down from 69 percent to 56 percent.

"There were signs that a very strong yearling market earlier this year made it more difficult to balance vendor and buyer expectations initially, but there were a good number of pinhook outcomes," Inglis managing director Mark Webster said.

"The clearance rate picked up as the sale progressed and will improve further with many private sales for our clients currently being negotiated.''

The average price at the sale was AU$69,020, up from AU$62,731 last year. The median increased from AU$45,000 to AU$50,000. With the smaller catalog, the gross was down from AU$9.2 million to AU$5.1 million.

Topping the sale at AU$420,000—well above last year's best price of AU$310,000—was a colt from the first crop of War, who stands for AU$6,600 at Blue Gum Farm in Victoria.

The colt, out of the Snowland mare Crevasse, was a standout among War's first crop of yearlings for auction last season, selling for AU$155,000—the only yearling to make more than AU$60,000. Pinhooked by Uppergumtree Farm and offered as Lot 86, he was purchased by Hong Kong buyer David Lui.

"He's a beautifully-bred colt and a very well built, he looks good and walks good and has a beautiful head. Everything made him a standout of the sale,'' Lui said.

War, whose sole victory in four starts came in the Up and Coming Stakes (G3) at Warwick Farm, is very closely related to the eight-time group 1-winning mare More Joyous. Like her, War is by More Than Ready, out of graded stakes winner Sunday Joy (Sunday Silence).

Australian sales of 2-year-olds in training don't have the same profile yet as they do in the United States. This is just the fifth Ready2Race sale that Inglis has held. But they are popular with Asian buyers, especially those from Hong Kong, Macau, China, and Singapore, so there is plenty of chance they will grow.

The leading buyer was Hong Kong's Yu Long Investments, which spent AU$534,000 on three horses. Yu Long Investments is a slot holder for The Everest and the horse it's teamed up with, She Will Reign, is currently the favorite for the AU$10 million race.

Australia's other major juvenile auction is the longer-running Magic Millions Gold Coast 2-Year-Olds in Training sale. There are 293 horses cataloged for the sale, which will be held next week, Oct. 10-11. BH

Swale (outside) wins the 1983 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland

CLAIBORNE'S SWALE A SWEET BREEDERS' FUTURITY WINNERBy Tom Hallt @lordatwar

Each October the racing world turns its attention toKeeneland, the historic track on the outskirts of Lex-

ington. Established in 1936 to showcase "racing as it was meant to be," Keeneland resides on land that belonged to noted breeder Jack Keene, one of the track's original founders.

Noted for an emphasis on the traditions of the sport, Keeneland revived several stakes events that had been mainstays at Lexington's previous racing facility, the Kentucky Association racetrack, which operated from the 1830s until its closure in 1933.

One of these is the grade 1 Breeders' Futurity, a 1 1/16-mile main track event for 2-year-olds. The race celebrates its 104th anniversary Oct. 7.

Although at present a staple of the fall meet, the Breeders' Futurity was first run April 30, 1910, opening day of a seven-day spring meet at the Lexington Association track. The winner of the then-four-furlong contest was C.L. Harrison's Broomstick filly Housemaid, making her debut and annihilating 14 opponents by 10 lengths.

When the Breeders' Futurity moved to Keeneland, it shifted seasons and wasted no time in establishing itself as a barometer for success in the 3-year-old classics.

Belair Stud's Johnstown took the first Keeneland version of the Breeders' Futurity in 1938 when the bay son of Jamestown carried William Woodward's red polka-dotted white silks to a nose victory in a six-furlong test. The following year Johnstown took the Kentucky Derby by eight lengths, becoming the first Breeders' Futurity victor to win the Run for the Roses.

Today the Futurity is known as the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity, a

sponsorship that is both fitting and ironic. Although owned by Belair Stud, Johnstown was bred by A.B. Hancock Sr. of Claiborne Farm.

Fast-forward to 1983. The Hancock family's Claiborne-bred and-owned Swale, a dark bay Seattle Slew colt, came into the 70th running of the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland from a successful foray in the East, which found him winning the Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) and the Futurity Stakes (G1).

On Oct. 8, 1983, Swale, a staunch favorite in the field of eight juvenile males, faced the 1 1/16-mile journey with regular jockey Eddie Maple. Prepared by veteran horseman Woody Stephens, Swale pressed the pace of Spender for the first half-mile before responding to Maple's suggestion that he assume control. Spender, on the other hand, was loath to relinquish that which he had claimed for so long. Swale had put his head in front after six furlongs and that's as much quarter as the reluctant Spender would give. At the wire Swale held a head margin over Spender with Back Bay Barrister another 2 ½ lengths back in third after closing from seventh in the final furlongs.

Swale closed his juvenile season with a tally in the Young America Stakes (G1) and headed to Florida for the winter. He came to Churchill Downs the next year off victories in the Hutcheson Handicap (G3) and Florida Derby (G1) and losses in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) and Lexington Stakes.

On May 5, 1984, Claiborne Farm—who had bred two previous Kentucky Derby winners—scored its first Derby win as owner when Swale scored an uncontested 3 1/4-length victory, becoming the last horse to date to

parlay his Breeders' Futurity win with one in the Derby. After a dismal Preakness result, he returned to win the Belmont Stakes (G1). He was awarded a posthumous Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male, having died eight days after his Belmont victory. BH
