The Gift of the Priesthood

Rev. Chip HinesPastor

The priesthood is a great gift. I want to begin Lent by noting that I often take these 40 days to reflect on the great gift given to me. I acknowledge my unworthiness for the gift, but I also marvel that God blessed me anyway.

The decision to enter the priesthood is not a one-time event. A guy doesn’t just wake up one morning and decide to be a priest and show up at the seminary with his stuff. It is a process of discernment and that process can either begin at a young age or when a man is a little older. On February 1, we had a group of about 30 high school age boys gath-er at Blessed Sacrament to meet with Cardinal Seán and discuss the priesthood, have a meal and pray together. It’s a traditional event called a St. Andrew’s Dinner. It was a wonderful night for the local Church as we gathered to talk about something so important to the life of the Church and so near and dear to the Cardinal’s heart. A lot of the young men were from Catholic schools with Xaverian Brothers High School well represented. There were public school kids (which I was also, by the way) there too. The three vocation directors for the archdiocese were present as well and I think for young men to see 4 priests and the Cardinal together in one place must have been an interesting experience as we don’t see that number of priests gathered at one parish very often anymore.

There were seminarians present as well and they gave such inspiring talks about how they went from what they were doing—one fellow was in the Navy—to entering Saint John’s Seminary. Those witness talks are always inspiring. For me this was an inspiring evening of fellowship. It was an evening of good intentions and prayer and I was very happy Blessed Sacrament could host such a wonderful night. The future of the priesthood could very well have been in that room that night and it is very clear that these events are part of our mission. In fact, the pastoral plan being devel-oped for the collaborative sets a goal of establishing a group of young men who can gather to pray, to discern their vocation, and to develop friendships.

I always want to let you know what is positive and life-giving in our collaborative and this event was all that and much more. We are truly blessed. I hope your Lent has begun with much hope for the Easter season for in less than 40 days the Tomb will be empty.

Peace.

Movie Morning with Fr. ChipSee “Zootopia”, the latest blockbuster animated film from Disney, in its opening weekend for a discounted price in a special screening just for the Matthew 13 Col-laborative. Bring you family on Saturday, Mar 5, 10am to Showcase Cinema Patriot Place. The first 50 tickets are just $5 each and then $8.25 after that. ALL AGES are welcome. Tickets must be pre-purchased either at your parish’s office or online at www.Matt13Catholic.org/movie. They will not be sold at the door on the day of the screening. Contact the parish office with any ques-tions.

The Light Is On For YouThe Light is On For You every Wednesday this Lent, from 6:30 to 8pm, in all parishes in the Archdiocese, includ-ing St. Mary’s and Blessed Sacrament. The Light Is On For You is an opportunity to encounter the Sacrament of Reconciliation (or Penance or Confession) and to receive God’s tender mercy as He welcomes you with open arms. Last year, many of you shared with our priests that The Light Is On For You was your first time to Confession in many years or even decades! If it’s been a while for you, don’t wait any longer.

For some, Confession can be scary and even embarrass-ing. We may be too nervous or consider ourselves un-forgiveable. Yet with confidence Pope Francis reminds us:  “How many times in my pastoral ministry have I heard it said, ‘Father, I have many sins,’ and I have al-ways pleaded, ‘Don’t be afraid; go to him; he is waiting for you; he will take care of everything.’ We hear many offers from the world around us, but let us take up God’s offer instead: his is a caress of love.”

We welcome submissions to the bulletin of parish or community events. Please keep the submissions brief, no more than 150 words and we suggest for best effect you answer the following questions: Who is my audience? What do I want them to do/know? Why do I want them to do/know that? When should they do that? Where should they do that? How should they get more information? If you have a photo or graphic or logo to accompany the announcement, please include it, but keep in mind we have limited space. Please send any submissions to [email protected].

Please note that Faith Formation Classes are on Winter Break from the week beginning Feb. 14 through the week beginning Feb. 28. Classes will resume the week of March 6. Enjoy your break!

As We Begin Our Lenten JourneyPlease take a copy of the “Word Among Us” booklet as you leave the church today. Taking a few minutes each day to be with God is a wonderful way to deepen our relationship with the Lord as we journey through Lent to Easter.

This past week, many of you received a letter from Car-dinal Seán requesting your support of the 2016 Catholic Appeal. If you have not already done so, please prayer-fully consider making an early pledge. Our parish di-rectly benefits from the 50 ministries supported by the Appeal and your gift will help us reach our 2016 goal. If you have not seen the inspiring, brief video about the 2016 Catholic Appeal, a link is available on the parish websites or at bostoncatholicappeal.org. Thank you in advance for your support of this year’s Catholic Appeal.

Year of Mercy SpeakerImagine surviving geno-cide, then dedicating your life to finding peace with those who tried to kill you. Join us on March 2 for a special celebration of the Year of Mercy when the Matthew 13 Collab-orative hosts speaker Pascasie Musabyemun-gu. The Catholic Relief

Services representative from Rwanda, and leader of the Women Building Peace Project, will inspire you to deepen your Lenten journey and will demonstrate what it truly means to be merciful. The event will be held at the St. Mary’s Parish Hall at 7:30pm. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided by the Blessed Sac-rament Spiritual Life Committee.

Organ Renovation BeginsOn Thursday afternoon, Feb. 4, the new organ console was brought into the church and hoisted over the balcony railing. Students from BSS, who were practicing for a school Mass, were treated to quite a sight, watching this spectacle occurring in the church! After the new console was safely in the balcony, one of the movers said, “We weren’t worried, were we?” The organ project will continue for roughly eight weeks and for several weeks the organ will be out of commission. We will have pia-no accompaniment during our liturgies during that time. More updates about the project will follow. Thank you to all who have supported this

organ project.

Sung Acclamations & Mass ReadingsWe invite you to sing our acclamations during the Liturgy of Eucharist. During the season of Lent, we will be singing the Mass of Spirit and Grace (#195,199, 202-204) at the 4pm, 8am, and 11am Masses and the Mass of Renewal (#175, 179, 181,183, 184) at the 9:30am Mass. You may also notice that we will be singing the Peni-tential Rite at the beginning of Mass, which the cantors will lead. Please lift your voices in song throughout the Mass!

This week you can find the Readings at page 885.

Remember in Your PrayersEach week during the Prayer of the Faithful at Mass, we pray for those in our community who are sick. If you have a family member whose name should be added to the prayer list, please contact Margaret Manning at [email protected] or 508-668-4700 x1007. We kindly request that only immediate family members of the sick add names to the list.

Through our parish prayer line, we also remember all our shut-ins, our unemployed, our sick, our grieving, and our own parish dead, including Margaret Salute and Catherine Martin, whose funerals were this past week. Call 508-668-2448 with your prayer intentions or to join the prayer line.

Morning of Prayer with Sr. Nancy SheridanLent is a time to slow down and maybe create some space in our busy lives to enter into a deeper friendship with God. Sr. Nancy Sheridan will lead us in a Lenten Morning of Prayer on Saturday,  Feb. 20, 9:30am to Noon in the Community Room. The theme for our Morning of Prayer is: Lent: A Season of the Heart; A Season of the Cross. God invites us into an intimate relationship. How will you respond this Lent?

Please find edifying articles from Bringing Home the Word for the 1st Sunday of Lent on your parish web sites.

Recently I was preparing some answers to questions received by the Collaborative Parish Council regarding the Blessed Sacrament Tower Project. As I was assem-bling the information, I decided that it would be an op-portune time to do an update on the status and financ-ing of the Tower, Chapel & Organ Projects.

Project Background

In the summer of 2014, Blessed Sacrament undertook a large project on the bell tower of the church to repair the exterior masonry to reduce the water infiltration into the chapel. The cause of the water infiltration, which had been occurring for many years, was studied since at least 2008. The parish hired Gale Engineering, a nationally recognized firm, to assist in developing the scope of work, assist in putting the project out to bid, and to oversee the project on the parish’s behalf.

About a year after the main work on the tower was com-pleted, the chapel ceiling and walls were restored and painted in the fall of 2015. The organ restoration is cur-rently in process and should be completed before this Easter.

Financing

When Fr. Tim and Fr. Chip jointly agreed that the project could not wait, they decided to host several meetings in the spring and summer of 2014 to outline the project and how it would be financed.

The Archdiocese agreed to finance the entire project to allow the parish to have the time to run a capital cam-paign. The parish currently has a loan from the Arch-diocese in the amount of $395,921. All funds that are donated to the capital campaign have been deposited into a restricted savings account in the name of Blessed Sacrament at the Archdiocese with a current balance of $247,257. This leaves a current net liability of $148,664.

There are currently remaining pledges of $193,198 with $412,794 already paid on a total of $605,992 in pledges from 279 individuals and families.

Most of the monthly pledges began June/July 2014 and will conclude June/July 2017. A few will conclude in 2018.

At the end of the capital campaign, if there is a net lia-bility remaining, in excess of what has been donated, the Archdiocese will provide the parish with a long-term loan for the balance.

Expenditures

At the time of this writing the following amounts have been spent on the three projects:

• Chapel: $7,590 (paint, plaster, elec.).• Organ: $40,000 deposit on major work (blower mo-

tor unit repaired earlier) • Tower Repairs: $519,102 (tower repair, engineering,

building envelope study, capital campaign fees)

Most of the vendors on these projects have been paid directly by the Archdiocese either out of the savings or loan accounts. All invoices paid must be related to one of the three projects. In some instances, usually due to timing, the parish would pay an invoice and then be re-imbursed out of the restricted savings or loan accounts at the Archdiocese.

The work on the tower and chapel are completed and all invoices have been paid. As for the organ work we have made a $40,000 deposit, and $58,438 is outstanding on the contract. $30,000 is due within 7 days of 50% completion. The balance on the contract will be due within 30 days of project comple-tion.

In summary, as of to-day, if the organ project is completed as planned and all remaining pledges re-ceived from the parishioners, the parish would end up with an additional long-term debt of approximately $15,000. Given the size and scope of the projects and that they were undertaken during a period of transition for the parish, I would say that is a fairly favorable re-sult.

I often meet with parishioners who have questions or suggestions. Please don’t hesitate to reach out via phone (508-921-1058 x1020) or email ([email protected]). Thank you.

My name is Mike St. Germain and you may know me from growing up in the Walpole com-munity or from working on the St. Mary’s maintenance staff for the past 5 years. I am cur-rently a sophomore studying along a pre-medical track at the University of Vermont while continuing my faith formation. I am writing to you to ask for your support.

This March, rather than re-turning home, I have chosen to spend my spring break going on a mission trip to Mexico City with FOCUS, the Fellowship of Catholic University Students. The week-long trip will include working in the “forgotten wom-en’s” shelter as well as counseling homeless children of Mexico City who are addicted to inhalants. I know it will be a cultural shock for me, but I am looking forward to

giving back to a community less fortunate than the one I have been blessed to be raised in. In order for me to go on this journey of service and spiritual growth, I first need to raise the funds for my trip.

This is why I turn to you, the community that has guid-ed me this far in my faith. I would greatly appreciate your support on this jour-

ney and I would be grateful for any size donation. Gifts can be made online at www.focus.org/goto/michaelst.germain. Checks can be made out to FOCUS and sent to 7 Killeen Road, East Walpole, MA 02032 or 633 Main Street Living/Learning Center Box 500, Burlington, VT 05405. Thank you for your support and God bless!

Hungering for OpportunityOur journey with CRS Rice Bowl begins in Colom-bia, where coffee beans are chang-ing lives!  Cenida Chamorro 29, and Dilsa Benavides, 38, cut coffee at Fi-dencio Chamorros coffee plantation at vereda Alto de Aranda, Linares municipality, Department of Nari–o, Colombia. Producers say it is hard to get coffee cutters in this area because many men leave to work at the coca fields that pay better prices then what’s offered for coffee and cane work. What actions can we take this Lent to change lives—at home and around the world? Visit crsricebowl.org for more and be sure to pick up your Rice Bowl in the back of church this weekend.

Society of St. Vincent de PaulIn today’s Gospel, Jesus overcomes the temptations to wealth, power and esteem. As we begin Lent, may we open our hearts to the grace of serving the poor. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will help the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter. Thoughts of a DiscipleThis is a busy day. Catechumens and Candidates head to the Cathedral for the Rite of Election and the Call to  Continuing Conversion. During this period of Pu-rification and Enlightenment they need our contin-ued prayers. And today is Valentine’s Day! The readings ae not about cherubs with bows and arrows, but are all  about love. Out of love God delivered His people from slavery in Egypt and sent His Son to redeem us. And Jesus’ love for us brought him to fast for 40 days in the desert and withstand temptations of the devil. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the three hallmarks of Lent. With Jesus as our model, we can incorporate all three into our lives this Lent. All for love of Him who first loved us. Unconditionally.

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for their selfless service to us and our country. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen. Please remember our military in your prayers. To add or remove a name, call Margaret 508-921-1021 x1007.

Everyday StewardshipWe can look at the lives of teenagers in today’s world and sometimes wonder how they can ever survive. Due to technology and the constant drone of mass media, young people are under constant attack by forces that are anything but Christian. Of course, if we are hon-est, it isn’t just the young that are susceptible to these temptations, for any age can be caught off guard and fall into a trap where he or she then wonders, “Why did I do that?” You can imagine then how someone with less maturity and life experience can easily be deceived by the culture.

Jesus was fully human and fully divine. The humanity in him certainly understood the allure of temptation. While he was in the desert, Satan tried all he could to shake Jesus from his principles. But at no time did Je-sus lose his composure and give in to temptation. He was constantly mindful of his surroundings, his adver-sary, and who he was and who he was not.

Being mindful is a primary characteristic of an Every-day Steward. When we are ever aware of the forces surrounding us, both good and bad, and when we are constantly listening and looking for God interacting with us, we are able to respond to God’s call in daily life. We can also see evil for its true self and not be taken in by it. Whether we are young or old, to be aware of and living in the present, without the baggage of the past and without fear of the future, will allow us to stay true to ourselves and to Jesus. We will be able to give of our-selves freely without concern for what the culture might say. That is good news. Let us help each other and espe-cially the young people in our lives, to be more mindful.

Message of the WeekLuke 4:1–13Jesus faced temptation, like we all do. His forty-day fast in the desert wasn’t full of supernatural consola-tion and delight. He was subject to “every temptation” and when the forty days were over, “he was hungry.” In other words, he was human. Jesus’ divine nature didn’t cancel out his human nature. He faced struggles just like we do.

As we see in today’s Gospel, the strategy Jesus used to fight these physical and spiritual battles was to im-merse himself in God’s word. And these sacred words had a dramatic effect. Every time Satan tried to seduce him with a new promise, Jesus responded with a Bible verse. And each time, Satan was silenced and had to try a new angle. Jesus won the victory using the weapon of God’s word. As we enter into the season of Lent, we can be armed in the same way. Let’s be equipped to pro-claim—and to live—the words Jesus himself used: “You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.”

Questions of the WeekLuke 4:1–13: In what ways do you think the devil tempts you?

Deuteronomy 26:4–10: How does knowledge of the his-tory of ancient Judaism help you during the season of Lent?

Romans 10:8–13: Paul uses Scripture to make his point of how Jesus saves us. How will you use Scripture for the season of Lent this year?
