1.0 Objective The objective of the study was to investigate the amount of time the Series 20M – 496 shipping system could maintain temperature at or below -18°C as well as at or between -25°C and -15°C while subjected to the ISTA 7D Summer 24 hour cycled shipping profile.
2.0 Scope The Series 20M – 496 shipping system was subjected to the “ISTA Summer 24 hour cycled 7D shipping profile with hot shipping and hot receiving conditions.” This study examined the shipper’s performance without the additional thermal mass of a payload. Each test was conducted in triplicate.
3.0 Acronyms

4.0 Definitions Conditioning: The process of exposing materials to predetermined temperatures for specific lengths of time in order to render the material fit for use. Non-insulating Dunnage: Material designed to take up space without adding to the R-Value of the shipper. The non-insulating dunnage that was used in this test was 6” x 1” x 1” polyethylene foam strips. Packout: The designed configuration for the temperature controlled package. Payload: Mock product contained in the insulated shipper to mimic real load. (This test was conducted to test the thermal properties of the shipper without a load therefore no payload was used.) Temperature Probe: A device which measures local temperature within a calibrated tolerance.

Temperature profile: The temperature set points and exposure times experienced by the insulated shipper within the environmental chamber. Thermal Performance Study: The action of studying a container’s thermal capabilities under highly controlled conditions.
5.0 Executive Summary The Series 20M – 496 shipping system was exposed to the ISTA 7D Summer 24 hour cycled temperature profile. The study investigates the thermal performance of the shipper without a payload. Each test was conducted in triplicate. The times presented in this summary represent an average time of the three test results. The performance results are summarized in Table 1 referencing the time at which the internal temperature probe recorded an excursion above the -18°C range and outside the required -25°C to -15°C range. The full thermal performance data is outlined in Section 10.0 Results. The testing revealed that the Series 20M – 496 shipping system was able to maintain internal payload area temperatures at or below -18°C for an average of 115.78 hours, and between -25°C and -15°C for an average of 100.81 hours, while subjected to the ISTA 7D Summer temperature profile.

6.0 Background The Series 20M – 496, has a payload volume of approximately 4 liters (5.9” x 5.9” x 5.9”) and a tare weight of approximately 21.4 lbs. The container consists of a TIC system, two 1” VIP assemblies and an outer corrugated container. The TIC system consists of six matching panels with integrated 20M PCM and beveled edges. The VIP is made up of two assemblies, with one nested inside the other, separated by foam and plastic spacers. Each VIP assembly is constructed from six panels that are encapsulated and assembled into a base with a lid. The outer corrugate container is available in either white plastic corrugate or cardboard. This test was conducted using the plastic corrugate container. The outer dimensions of the container were 15.0” x 13.0” x 13.5” (see appendixes [b] and [c] for configuration illustrations).

7.0 Materials and Equipment Used

7.2 Equipment Calibration
The temperature data loggers meet or exceeds the standards stated in ASTM D3103 and ISTA procedure 7D. The Global Sensors LogTag temperature data loggers have a temperature resolution of 0.1°C and a temperature accuracy of ±1°C over the test range. The Marathon edl-CO2 temperature data loggers have a temperature resolution of 0.1°C and a temperature accuracy of ±0.6°C over the test range. The environmental chamber temperature controller is also calibrated to a temperature accuracy of ±1°C over the chambers entire temperature range. See appendix [d] for a list of the calibrated equipment and appendix [f] for calibration certificates.
8.0 Test Plan outline Table 2 below outlines the test plan for the thermal testing of the Series 20M – 496.

9.0 Procedures The procedures described in this section outline the steps that were used to setup and test the thermal performance of the shipping systems. Each test was conducted in triplicate.
9.1 TIC Conditioning
The Series 20M – 496 TIC panels were removed from their insulator assembly and placed into an environmental chamber set to -70°C (±2°C) for a minimum of 24 hours before each test run. The TIC systems were conditioned flat so as to not allow any air pockets to form. The PCM was solid after conditioning.
9.2 Probe placement
Two calibrated data loggers were used to record temperatures during this test. The Marathon edl-CO2 electronic data logger was used for monitoring the interior of the container and the Global Sensors LogTag data logger was used for monitoring the test ambient conditions. The internal logger (probe #1) was secured to non-insulating dunnage and placed in the center and on the bottom of the payload area. The ambient logger (probe #2) was placed inside the environmental chamber to record the test ambient conditions. The data loggers were set up so that the temperature readings from each probe were recorded in 5 minute intervals. See figure 1 for an illustration of the probe placement.

9.3 Payload
The main payloads intended to be used in the shippers are pharmaceuticals for the -15°C to -25°C range and blood Plasma for the at or below -18°C range. This test was conducted without the additional thermal mass of a payload therefore no payload conditioning was required.
9.4 Shipper Packout
The TICs were removed from the -70°C (±2°C) freezer after a minimum of 24 hours conditioning time. After conditioning, the TIC base and four side panels were assembled inside the insulator assembly. No staging time is needed for the Series 20M product line. Non-insulating dunnage was placed in the center and on the bottom of the payload area space. Both temperature data loggers were then activated. Probe #1 was placed on top of the dunnage. The TIC lid was placed onto the rest of the TIC assembly. The inner VIP lid was set on top of the inner VIP base and four plastic spacers were placed on the top corners of the VIP assembly. The outer VIP lid was placed on top of the insulator assemblies. The outer container was closed and secured with a piece of tape. The shipper was loaded into the environmental chamber. Probe #2 was placed into the chamber to record external test ambient conditions. The environmental chamber was set to run the desired temperature profile and started. The packout was repeated for each shipper.
9.5 ISTA 7D Summer Temperature Profile The “ISTA Summer 24 hour cycled 7D shipping profile with hot shipping and hot receiving conditions.” was used for the thermal performance testing of the shippers. Table 3 outlines the temperatures and hold times for the temperature profile. Note: It can take up to 10 minutes (0.17 hours) to change temperatures due to environmental chambers temperature change rate limitations. The change rate for the environmental chambers is a maximum of 5°C per minute. Table 3 outlines the “ISTA Summer 24 hour cycled 7D shipping profile with hot shipping and hot receiving conditions.” The 24 hour summer temperature profile was cycled over five times for a total test duration of 140.00 hours.

10.0 Results The performance results are summarized in Table 4 below referencing the time each probe recorded an excursion above the -18°C temperature range and outside the -15°C and -25°C temperature range. See appendix [e] for thermal performance graphs of each shipper and appendix [g] for a table containing all the temperature readings for each shipper.

The testing revealed that, without a payload, the Series 20M – 496 shipping system was able to maintain internal payload area temperatures at or below -18°C for an average of 115.78 hours, and between -25°C and -15°C for an average of 100.81 hours, while subjected to the ISTA 7D Summer temperature profile.
