Community andpolitical groups areprotesting against thebusiness and location of atleast three TASMAC-runliquor shops in this area.

On Monday this week, the local unit of the BJPled by Vanathi Srinivasanheld a demonstration in theLuz area seeking closure oftwo such shops in thePalakkuma Nagar, locatedbehind the Luz Circle.

They said that whileone shop existed here, anew one was openedrecently and this hasincreased the stream ofclients and causedproblems for residents, irked women and alsodisturbs commuters whouse the Thirumylai MRTSstation when drunks hangout here after dark.

Elsewhere, people in theMundakakanni AmmanTemple area have also

sought closure of the localTASMAC liquor shop - theysay it also disturbs thepeace of what is aresidential area.

Sometime ago, localpeople and members of LokSatta party staged demos toget the state to close thebars located in 2 floors of abuilding here.

The pressure led tothis closure.

Reported by R Saravanan

There are legions of fans of playback singerT M Soundararajan who passed away recently. And each ofthem has his or her own special interest in his songs and inhis albums.

Some of these fans were among the small community ofpeople who attended a tribute concert at the SrinivasaSastri Hall in Luz on Sunday morning.

Hosted by Ever Green Melodies, the concert by DelhiPrakash was themed on TMS’ well-known devotionals andon this Sunday morning, the rasikas allowed themselvesinto the mood that the singer and his musicians werecreating in memory of a man they considered to be a king.

During the break, we met up with a few people whoare diehard TMS fans and got to know their likes better.

79-year-old Ramaswamy lives at Alamelu Apartments inAlamelumangapuram, Mylapore.

His treasured possession is a book, a kind of diary that is full of songs byTMS. He also has a grand collection of the singer’s music on tape. SaysRamaswamy, “I also collected TMS’ devotional songs and songs sung for specialoccasions or on themes.”

His favourites? “ Songs sung for Sivaji Ganesan!”Another collector of vintage music, with a special section for TMS’ songs is

N A Mahalingam who resides on Luz Church Road. He says he bunched thesongs according to the context and situation that theyhave been sung for.

Among his TMS bests are - Yaar indha nilavu, Yenpiranthai maganey, Paatum nane, Bavamum naneand Ethanai Kalam thaan Ematruvai.

Mahalingam has these songs in the Mp3 formatand says he listens to them all the time.

Retired banker S G Sridharan looks the sort of fanwho likes to know his idol close. He says he has oftenmet with the late playback singer over tiffin atHotel Woodlands.

A resident of Sivaraman Street in Mandaveli, healso has his own collection of songs - bhakti, film andthe very best.

His best two of TMS?Ullam urguthayya and Karpanai Endralum . .Mala Kuppuswamy from MRC Nagar who was present for this show says her

favourites are the devotionals that TMS sang, especially the ones onLord Muruga.

Mala, who resides on Sathyadev Avenue says her collection of TMS’ music isin two parts - devotional and old films.

“My preference is always the songs TMS sung for Sivaji Ganesan and theduets that TMS sang with P. Susheela,” she said during the Sunday concert.

Mala’s collection is on Mp3 files and on CDs and she logs online to locatesongs that she does not have in her collection.

CHRONICLER

Veteran journalist-writerVamanan’s book on TMS titled‘TMS - Oru Pann-paatuSarithiram’ is probably adefinite biography on theplayback singer.

The 500 pages book is uniquein that it weaves the singer’s lifeand times with that of thechanging Tamil film cinemaworld. It also has 16 pagesof photos.

It starts from the times of thesinger-actor period, of the likesof P U Chinnappa in the 40swhen Soundararajan was a merechorus singer and moves throughthe times when MGR and Sivajiwere the undisputed stars.

“TMS made his debut infilms when the concept ofplayback singing was yet toform,” recalls Vamanan, aAbhiramapuram resident.

The book is published byManikavasagar Pathipagam,Chennai and was first releasedin 2002.

The hardbound volume nowcosts Rs.250 and still sells well.Copies are available at leadingbookshops.

Vamanan has researched andwritten extensively onTamil cinema.

He lives on 4th Street,Abhiramapuram.Phone - 9445296503.

Rowdyism and trauma inresidential lane inAlarmelumagapuram

This is with reference to the everyday problemsfaced by us in our lane, Sankarapuram opposite P. S.Senior Secondary School in Alarmelumagapuram,Mylapore. (photo above)

The lane has a temple with Sri Bhaktha Anjaneyaras the presiding deity. The temple has been here sincethe 1980s. We live at the last house of the lane next tothe temple and have been facing the traffic issuesarising out of the vehicular traffic which does not stopdespite posting a security at the gate.

The securityman is tipped by many vehicle riderswho get inside despite the fact that the lane is prettynarrow with a lot of residential vehicles parked inside. This has caused immense tension and traumaemotionally and mentally all these years.

Often vehicles are parked all over the place andthis causes much discomfort for us. Imagine our plightin an emergency.

The temple management has done nothing aboutthis issue and most residents are also indifferent tothe issue.

I have personally done traffic management onmany days and have also received threats a few timesfor carrying out this activity. Often, people act likerowdies and confront us and there have been nastyrows too.

A court ruling has stated that the road is a privateone and so is this temple so people cannot misuse it.

I experienced a nasty confrontation last week and

I have been traumatized. I want the localpolice and civic officials to address ourgrievance immediately. We have beenresiding here for 40 plus years and we havea right to some peace and order

- Lakshmi Subramanian,Sankarapuram, Mylapore

Memories ofRadha Kalyanamand bhagavatar

This is in reference to the news photoin June 1 issue of Mylapore Times onRadha Kalyana procession led byMuthurama Bhagavatar.

I recollected my good old days atKumbakonam. A number of bhajans and Sri RadhaKalyanams were performed by his father ManiBhagavatar. Muthuraman used to accompany hisparents in all the events in many places.

Every ekathasi night, they used to performbhajans in a gathering at my residence inKumbakonam.

On reading your report, I called him recentlyand we exchanged pleasantries. He was kindenough to visit my residence the next day with hiswife.

What a moment ! Re-union and renewal offriendship after 44 years. Thanks to MylaporeTimes for making this happen.

- M Radhakrishnan, 180, Luz Church Road,Mylapore.

‘Our mango trees grew fromsaplings in Delhi’

I read the interesting feature with photographsin the Mylapore Times on a family which takescare of it’s mango trees and want to share our storytoo.

We have a similar tree in our garden (there arein fact 2 trees) grown to a height of more than 35feet and yielding well today.

One of them was a one foot sapling planted ina pot in Delhi at my residence and allowed to growin the pot itself to a height of 4 feet for about 3 or4 years and was brought to Chennai by rail as‘accompanied luggage’ on my rertirement from

service in the Central govt in 1992.It was replanted in the ground at my residence

here in R K Nagar where it has grown today to aheight of over 35 feet. The mango variety knownas Dusseri ( a sweet mango popular in UttarPradesh ) grows largely in Lucknow and itsenvirons. I wonder if the soil change from Delhito Chennai has made a minor change in the tasteof the mango but the fruit is indeed delicious.

- C R Ramaswamy, 20, 1st Cross Street,R. K. Nagar,

Where and when canMylaporeans getAadhaar Cards?

When Aadhaar Card was introduced underUIAI a couple of years ago there were very fewtakers. In principle, every Indian citizen shouldbe compulsorily identified and issued with aUnique Identifcation Number, which is whatAadhaar is all about.

A few banks and post offices were acting asenrollment centres for a limited period in thebeginning and then it all stopped abruptly, thanksto Aadhaar itself losing ‘aadhaaram’ due topolitical controversies!

Recently it has started attracting a great dealof attention of the public, with the Central Govt.notifying that LPG subsidy will be available fromAugust 2013 only to those who hold AadhaarCards. Enrollment of Aadhaar has been revivedand even online registration has been introducedin most states, but Tamil Nadu has not introducedthe online registration facility, for reasons bestknown to the government.

Hardly ten percent people in Tamil Nadu haveso far got their Aadhaar Cards. What about others? It appears that Corporation of Chennai hasidentified a few areas in Chennai and registrationhas already started there. When will theregistration start for Mylaporeans? Wide publicitymust be given and the process made easy and user-friendly, if and when it starts, so that people willnot miss registering this time.

Can the local MLA and the councillors cometo the rescue of Mylaporeans?

- C Lakshminarayanan, Kapali Nagar,Mylapore

The Sai Vidyalaya schoolissue is getting shrill now. This past week, there wereposters on the walls ofMylapore and Mandaveliwhich denounced theMylapore police inspector forbeing aggressive withprotestors.

The posters claimed tohave been created by thelocal unit of the DravidaKazhagam and the parents ofthe kids who study at thisschool.

The police officer had leda strong posse of his menagainst two groups thatclashed on Monday inVenkatesa Agraharam whenthe school was to reopen.

There is a disputebetween the Trust that runsthe school and the Trust

managing the Sai BabaTemple. It generated heatwhen walls of some roomsused by the school whichstands in the temple campusarea were demolished.Temple managers said theywanted space toaccommodate devotees atannadhanam time and thatthe school was told of itsplans.

The dispute has takenugly turns. Earlier, youth andelders had staged a protestnear the bridge denouncingthe temple Trust’s actions.

The temple Trust is atloggerheads with a formercouncillor who is also atrustee and who runs theschool now. They say the manhas brought his family onboard.

The temple managershave also circulated handbills

tracing their version of thehistory of the land and schooland saying that the All IndiaSamaj will do well to run thisschool now.

The All India Sai Samaj, started in 1941 had its set ofgoals which were moretowards serving thecommunity besides hostingreligious events.

However, over time as theSai Baba temple gainedpopularity, the crowdsmultiplied and the donationstripled the focus seems tohave changed.

Many oldtimers of theSamaj distanced themselvestoo. Now the team says if itruns the school, started in1966 it will do great serviceto poor students. The issuehas also been taken beforethe state school educationdepartment.

If you travel down Rajiv Gandhi Salai, still known asOMR or Old Mahabalipuram Road you will come acrossa few scenic places.

Places which have survived the development of IT parks andgated community projects.

One such place is in Padur, once a sleepy village. Padur’s biggestnatural asset is a lake.

A decade ago, people had bought two or three ground plots onland fronting this lake for as little as 20 thousand rupees.

Those who were prospecting for land here would have to getoff the OMR, drive through the small village and land up at theopen grounds, once fields. A college had just begun to come up.That was it.

Today, the village is all but gone and on the waterfront are largehouses you can see from as far as the East Coast Road side.

Padur Lake has been facing a slow death. Encroachers havecome in. People answer nature’s calls. It is a dumpyard for locallygenerated garbage and a washing space for hired lorries.

Of late, I have been reading a bit about the lake at a blog thatmy friend G V Krishnan publishes. It is titled ‘OMR Resident’,

Krishnan, who last worked for the Times of India is spendinghis retired years furiously blogging on local news and issues of hisneighbourhood - the far end of OMR.

Of late, Krishnan and his neighbours have been walking on thelakeside and have appreciated its value for a growing neighbourhood. They have also realised that this water body is getting pollutedbecause it now serves as an open air toilet for a huge number ofmigrant workers. These people work on the massive buildings onthe OMR and they do not have proper civic facilities.

Addressing such issues much before romaticising about awonderful lake is now on the minds of Krishnan and the OMRGreens, as the group is called.

One small step that they intend to take is to sensitise thecommunity in apartments to the existence of the lake and the needto conserve it. For, the lake belongs to all.

Who does the Marina Beach belong to?Touted the second longest beach in the world, it seems to be

everybody’s beach and nobody’s too!It needed a man to go to the High Court here to get the Chennai

Corporation, the city’s civic body to address the issue of rampanthawkerisation of this beach.

Thousands of hawkers eke their living on this beach. They sellice cream and fried fish, chips and corn, bajjis and sundal. Hawkersare an essential part of an open space like the Marina.

But it is shocking to see that neither the state nor the civic bodyaddresses the issue of orderly hawking.

Retiling the pavements and planting hghmast lamps is easy.Maintaining the sands and the waterfront is tough. Would gettingthe beachgoers involved help?

The walkers and volleyball players, the fisherfolk and hawkersand the legions of beach cricket players. Can each be given a stakein the Marina’s life?

This is the time to get the community involved. If the hawkerzones come up, can we keep the waste and the plastic just there? Can we fine those who dump bottles in the sand and throw plasticsachets in the water?
