THE small town of Libode in the former Tran-skei came to a standstill recently, followinga massive march staged by community mem-bers of the Thabo Mbeki Township and thesurrounding areas of Libode.

The march followed the arrest of two local

men, accused of being rapists. The protesters were demanding that the ac-

cused be kept in prison for a long time. Ac-cording to the protesters, the accused don’tdeserve to be part of society. They marched to the office of the station

commander, claiming that the police are fail-ing them. Some members of the community feel the

police are being too soft on criminals, result-ing in criminals choosing the Libode area asa hive for their criminal activities.Community leader andmember of the Com-

munity Policing Forum, Mamfaniseni Mat-ikita, said they face many challenges in thearea, since they are not protected.“Owing to the high rate of rapes in the area,

wehave called on thepolice to domorepatrols

in the area, but it doesn’t seem to have hap-pened.”Meanwhile two men were arrested in con-

nection with the rape of an old woman andher grandson in the area. The accused areseemingly also linked to the attack of a manand the rape of his girlfriend.

the second phase of the airport upgradeproject which will cost R212 million andthe department has made it clear to themain contractor that local SMME’s mustalso benefit as sub-contractors during thisperiod, but without compromising stand-ards and skills.“We have learnt our lesson with the pre-

vious contractor where some specifica-tionswere overlooked andwe ended up los-ing. This time we are sure that Ruwaconis experienced and skilled enough to com-plete this job,” said Marawu. The companywill also build a new paral-

lel security concrete road, upgrade someinternal roads and complete the seweragesystem.

Ruwacon, having been involved inmany big projects in the province andaround the country, promised to do theirbest and to complete the project within12 months. The company also did repairs and ren-

task team, not to exclude the communityand the business fraternity on mattersrelating to this project.Department spokesperson, Ncedo

THE African National Congress (ANC) in theEastern Cape has won eleven wards out of 14 inlast week’s by-elections.

In Mbhashe, which incorporates Idutywa,Willowvale and Elliotdale, the ANC won 10wards, while the UDM and independent candi-date won one each.In Buffalo City, the Democratic Alliance (DA)

won Ward 3, while in Elundini, the ANC alsowon another ward. The victory of the ANC inMbhashe follows a

visit by President Jacob Zuma during the ANC,EasternCape’s2014manifestorally, twodaysbe-fore the by-elections.MeanwhileMbhashe had been a political bat-

tlefield before the by-elections, as political par-ties were visiting the area frequently. At first it was Mluleki George, a breakaway

leader fromCOPE, who launched his new partyUnited Congress in that area. Mluleki was fol-lowedbyUnitedDemocraticMovement’s (UDM)leader, BantubonkeHolomisa, Zuma and COPEPresident, Terror Lekota.ANC spokesperson, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, said

the winning recipe was working alongside thepeople and tending to their concerns. He also

mentioned that as the ANC, they should makesure that development does go to the people espe-cially those in the rural areas.“We are working close with them in terms of

delivering services. As a result, we have starteda rural housing project in Elliotdale throughwhich people are benefiting. We are also busywith a regional water scheme project, bringingchange to our people’s lives,” said Qoboshiyane. He said the people of Mbhashe have confirmed

the cardinal role played by theANC in their livesby voting for ANC.“It shows that the ANC still lives in the hearts

of rural people and they are no longer blinded bythe small parties that are being established out ofanger by their leaders,” concluded Qhoboshiya-ne.UDM provincial spokesperson, Wandile Tsipa,

expressed his gratitude to the constituency of hisparty in Idutywa and members of the organiza-tionfortheircommitmentduringtheparty’scam-paigns for by-elections.The UDM was contesting six wards of which

they hadwon one. “We accept the outcome of theby-elections but the ‘ground was not level’ be-cause the ruling party was using state resourcesand on the day of the elections they were busy is-suing food parcels and t-shirts which is not cor-rect. It worked in their favour,” said Tsipa.

AN R800 000 Eastern Cape DevelopmentCorporation (ECDC) loan helped a Transkeifamily to turn its Caltex filling station intoan award-winning business in under twoyears.

The Ulundi Service Station hadwon threeCaltex Eastern Cape awards in less thantwo years of operation. It had also experi-enced 20% growth in revenues since incep-tion.With barely two years in operation, the

enterprising Mtembu family in the formerTranskei had built its Caltex Ulundi Serv-ice station into a multi award-winning es-tablishment.Ulundi Service Station is located on the

R61 road in Ntlaza about seven kilometresfrom Libode, about 40 kilometres from Mt-hatha and 60 kilometres from Port St John’sin the Nyandeni Local Municipality. The business is owned by Nomthandazo

Mtembu and her two sons, Tukela and Bas-anda Mtembu. Nomthandazo has over 17years of experience in the petrol service sta-

tion business as a franchiser.Approaching the age of 70, and unable to

play an active role in the running of thebusiness, Nomthandazo and her family ap-pointed Tukela (34) to manage the business.Basanda, an attorney with his own prac-

tice in Johannesburg, oversees the legal as-pects of the business. After numerous failed applications for fi-

nance from other funders, Tukela said thefamily was finally able to open operationsin February 2012 after receiving an R800 000loan from the Eastern Cape DevelopmentCorporation (ECDC). The funds were usedto renovate the existing building, install asecurity system and fill tanks.“With revenue growth of 20% since incep-

tion, the petrol station became the overallEastern Capewinner of the Caltex Five-StarRetailer award in the first fewmonths of op-erations. The award recognises compli-ance, commitment, a customer first ap-proach and continual gowth, as well ascleanliness.“This year we were also awarded the

the oil companies. “Furthermore, we weresecond runner-up in the Community Con-tributor award which is based on employ-ment and community upliftment.“We use our business to offer holiday

jobs to students, as well as offering oppor-tunities to the youth,” said Tukela. The business also features a conven-

ience store and restaurant on site calledthe Route 61 Café. The business employsnine permanent employees at the gas sta-tion, as well as two casual workers.“We intend to grow the business further

and double our revenues in the new finan-cial year. I must also extend my gratitudeto the ECDC that demonstrated faith in mybusiness and provided R800 000 loan fund-ing when others turned us away,” saysTukela. No stranger to business, the hospitality

and marketing graduate draws his inspi-ration and passion for business from hislate father who owned a general dealerwith petrol pumps in the early years of hisupbringing. The Ulundi Service Station site also in-

cludes a supermarket, post office and hard-

ware store, as well as ATM services.“Not only did we get financial support from

ECDC but we received mentorship as well. The responsible account manager wouldcome and examine our books to see how thebusiness was doing and that meant a lot tome. They don’t just give you a loan and letyou misuse the funds. They guide you,” saidTukela.ECDC accounts manager Bulelwa Maham-

ba said the financier took the deal becausethere was a significant need for the proposedfilling station.“The business is situated in a developing

and highly commercialised area, with con-stant traffic flow of both light commercialand heavy duty vehicles and it is situated ad-jacent the Ntlaza taxi rank. The St Barnabashospital is about 100m from site.”“The size of the site allows for current vol-

umes, as well as future growth. The businesshas surpassed the projected turnovers andchanged the face of the area.“It has also had a positive cashflow to buy

stock for the convenience store and a genera-tor for electricity backup,” Mahamba ex-plained.

This was revealed by the provincial ANCchairperson and MEC for Planning and Fi-nance, Pumulo Masualle, during his addressin Idutywa this week. For some years now, the Transkei area has

been ending in last position with matric re-sults.In the past, the Eastern Cape was not only

known for high quality education, but alsofor producing some of Mzanzi’s most respect-ed leaders, like the late Tata NelsonMandelaand many more.Masualle said they were responding to the

The WSU Faculty of Education, in collabo-rationwithSiemens,willmatch thehigh-techfacilities of the Mandela School of Scienceand Technology with highbrow teachingmethods and curricula through teacher de-velopment programmes carried out by WSU.Among SA’s most successful teacher

who have just graduated from University. We will now be better able to apply what wewere taught at university,” said Lukholo.WSU is one of four science-competence

The Department has equipped the EasternCape provincial fleet with eFuel technologydevised by Gilbarco AFS – one of South Afri-ca’s leading suppliers of fuel management so-lutions.In the recently delivered Medium Term

Budget Policy Statement 2013, the Minister ofFinance, Pravin Gordhan stated, “As govern-ment, we acknowledge that we too must pro-vide value for money. Although most govern-

ment spending is effectively managed, thereare many opportunities to cut or minimisecosts and stop abuse.”Ian Gross of Gilbarco AFS said prior to im-

plementing eFuel, the Eastern Cape provin-cial fleet was using a fuel card system that re-sulted in management challenges and cardabuse on a massive scale.“In June 1999, we were awarded the tender

for the automatic dispensing of fuel to govern-ment vehicles and fitted the fleet of approxi-mately 3 500 vehicleswith eFuel. With the sav-ings achieved, the Department was able re-cover the capital cost of the equipmentwithina mere five months.”The fleet was subsequently outsourced to a

specialist fleetmanagement company, during

which time eFuel remained a fundamentalcomponent of the fleet management solution. In 2011 the Department of Transport Eastern

Cape took the decision to purchase the fleetback and manage the full fleet services inter-nally.During the transitionphase itwasneces-sary to make use of fuel cards to purchase fuelfor a significant number of vehicles that werenewlypurchasedwhilst the fleetwasbeingout-sourced.Now, through its newly established provin-

cial government fleet management trading en-tity, the Department is activating eFuel on allthose vehicles. In total, the eFuel enabled fleetwill consist of approximately 3 500 vehicles.eFuel enables fleets to refuel at retail service

(RFID) automated technology – meaningthat no accounts, cash or cards are required.A secure RFID unit is installed in the vehi-

cle and connected to a transmitting coilaround the fuel tank inlet. At eFuel-enabledservice stations, the pump nozzles are pre-fitted with receiving coils, which are con-nected to station control units that regulatethe pumps. This technology is able to read, validate and record information about thevehicle whilst electronically authorising, logging and reporting on every drop of fueldispensed.Full transaction data is automatically re-

corded, leaving no opportunity for humanerror or deliberate manipulation. This in-cludes odometer and/or engine hour read-ings, vehicle registration number, fuel ac-count number, litres of fuel dispensed, fuelnozzle number, date and time of transaction, vehicle departmental allocation, location, etc.“The system, which is made according to

military specifications, is robust and thesoftware and applications used are easilyand constantly updated to meet our clients’needs,” said Gross.“By being the first to implement eFuel and

continuing to embrace our fuelmanagementtechnology over so many years, the Depart-ment is demonstrating its commitment toproviding value for the Province’s money.”According toEasternCapeMEC forTrans-

port, Roads and Public Works, ThandiswaMarawu, they believe that efficiency and ef-fectiveness is of theutmost importance in or-der to successfully service their sister de-partments with all fleet requirements basedon fleet management principles aligned togovernment.

UNITED Democratic Movement (UDM)Spokesperson, Wandile Tsipa. described anANC spokesperson’s utterances about 100UDMmembers joining the ANC, as “blatantlies and a propaganda of the ruling party”.

This was after the ANC spokesperson toldthe Express that the ANC had welcomed 100members from UDM in Mqanduli area. There were no members of the UDM who

joined the ANC. “What he was telling you isa blue lie,” said Tsipa. He said the UDMmembers must not be blinded by the propa-ganda of the ANC; their focus must be onFebruary 2, during the launch of UDMmani-festo in Nasrec, Gauteng.Mlibo said they had registered 100 mem-

bers from the UDM in Mqanduli area andtheir next focus would be Nyandeni wherethey wanted to register more members fromother organizations. He didn’t want to ex-plain exactly from which organisations theNyandeni members would be coming from.Meanwhile two prominent leaders of the

Congress of the People (COPE), in the pro-vincial legislature, have resigned and joinedthe ANC. These leaders were former COPEspokesman Nkosifikile Ngomo who wasamong the breakaway leaders from the ANCwho established COPE. The other is formerANC member, Nkosinathi Kuluta, who alsodefected to COPE and former KSD Speaker,Funeka Dondashe.“The reason I’m leaving COPE is because

the project COPE has failed. It is no longerrepresenting the purpose that we estab-lished it for. The only focus now is on courtbattles among its leadership,” said Ngomo. The provincial chairperson of the ANC,

Pumulo Masualle, welcomed the new mem-bers of the ANC. “Wewelcome them becausethe ANC is their home.”

I wonder what the gossip team is going to tellus? Come closer because we are here to sharesome good news with Express land.

Sometimes these chaps who think they aretown – if not township – fellows bore us becausethere is an element of pompousness when theyvisit us in the bundu areas, where we grew up.Sometimes we even think twice when invitingthem to our ceremonies, because they alwaysdenydoingwhatpeople aredoing in that partic-ular ceremony.Babe bekwenzela incasa befuna ukutotoswa

kanti asiyiqhelanga lo nto ezilalini. Ukubakukhutshwe isithebe okanye isilawulo seent-sizwa zidibana apho zisike zonke. What hap-pened boys? Hey, we took these model C boysto a ceremony which was hosted by our buddy

in Tsolo. OW!! It was like we could chasethem away, because they were not preparedto practise what people in the rural areaspractise.Bamdika ke uGesh kuba bathanda

nesilungu kanti uyazi yena ukuba umcimbiwesiNtu akuyonto yokuthetha silungu.Okukhawathayo kule daai ding ke akushoukuthi bona abasazi isiNtu. Yeyi, nina stopthat behaviour kungenjalo we will never in-vite you to our ceremonies. It’s worse because, before you relocate to

town – if not township – you started from thelocality or your parents still have a home inlalis. I wonder benza kanjani xa beye khonaor bebechomela thina. Kwayinto yokuba un-gene unqwaze i-caps endlini utebhise ne-brukhwe. Eish bafune ukuthelelwa eyaboinyama kwi-side plate ngaphakathi ebuh-lanti. Shame, kwaze kwanzima ezwenisokhile. Okay, let us leave it like this, sawubona ukuba oba enjani amaxhego an-gomso kule i-generation. Perhaps kothikusenzelwa umntwana imbeleko kube kud-lalwa iHip-Hop. Mawwuu!

Let’s hope shewill adhere to her resolutionthe entire year

As you know guys, each and every begin-ning of the year people set their targets andothers surrender some other things to starta new life in that particular year. Some reso-lutions are surprises. You know what? Re-cently wemet a ladywho is well known in themnandi places around UTA.And wherever there is a gig you will find

her with those seductive dance moves. She isalso not shy, even to the guys. Watsiba mossukuthi sithetha ngantoni. Hey, usisters toldus that she stopped the booze and she is nolonger a lady of the night if not of the night-clubs. Shame, she looks good even her facialexpression shows its original beauty, mean-ing that she really stopped boozing. That isa mammoth achievement sisi, ungasawa be-cause people normally used to set new livesfor the New Year but they end up becominggrand flops by sometimes even getting moreinvolved in their previous bad practices.Shame, alcohol can damage the beauty be-

as a gossip team particularly in this practiceof gayism if not lesbianism. Umbuzo wethungulo wokuba umntu utshintsha nini, xakutheni? Why such a question? Because ka-loku our buddy ebene-‘straight’ sakhe lastyear and the resolution for this year bekuku-ba uyamthatha umenza umazulendlini (un-kosikazi ke ngesiXhosa esisiso). And beselebenentwana entle engumfana.Mara ngoku iz-into zitshintshile usisi ubuye sengasayingenilo nto esithi yena seyi-lesbian and she is pre-paring tomarry her longtime sweetheartwhois the same gender of hers. Mmm, kunzimaemhlabeni sokhile. Kuyacacamoss ukuba ku-dala iqhubeka le nto xa sele kuzotshatwa ngo-March usisters lo ebeshaya nge-‘double adap-tor’. Be careful, ungathi uhlala nomntu wa-kho kanti se-belonger’ kwenye i-society.Mfethu this is not the endweunderstanduku-ba ubumthanda kanjani lo mntwana but kun-zima ngoku ukujika amatye abe zizonka.Okay qala ubomi obutsha akuqali ngaweuku-lahlekelwe ngumntu. Eissaaa mara ngalendlela bekuncono ukuba uthathelwe yenyeioutie ngoku nguye othathe enye i-cherrie.

Abantu bayaxaka wenza into yedwamara xa seibhemile ufunana nabantu

Abantu bakuthi andazi ukuba ungabathinikuba umntu wenza into eyedwa kumnandifuthi kweli xesha ebeyenza kodwa ezinto xasezijikile ufuna ukuzakubheyilwa. Ithini nakanti le nto? Kukhona ioutie yethu latelyibisele ingafuni ukuhamba nathi xa siy-okonwaba. Nathi ke besingabuzi nto becauseakunyanzelekanga ukuba ahambe nathi ma-ra icherrie yakhe imana ukubuza sibe siqon-da ukuba asinampendulo kule mibuzo. Kantiumfethu umana ukuya kuganga ngoku andwabanjwa ngumntu wakhe uthi masimng-qinele ukuba besihlala Sisonke njani ebema-na esibuza ukuba uphi kwaye kwenzeka nto-ni. Mfethu mela ismoko sakho thina besin-gekho asinokugqina ubugqina bobuxoki.Uyayazi moss lonto. Now, let’s take our pensand go and gather umgosi for our next publi-cation. Bye!

BETTIE GILIOMEE

FORD’S take on the very popular SUVmarketmade quite an impression when I had the op-portunity to spend a week with their new Ku-ga last year.

Needless to say, I was quite curious aboutwhat the weeklong road test would be likewith their “baby” SUV, the Ecosport, whichas the name suggests is a combination of eco-nomical, eco-friendly and Sporty. CompactSUV’s, like the Nissan Juke, Renault Dusterand Renault Sandero Stepway are becomingincreasingly popular as people start to realisethat bigger SUVs can be quite costly to buy, maintain and fill with fuel, especially whenonly used for the city commute with its of-froad paraphernalia only (very) expensivedecorations. So what do these compact SUVs offer? The

high ride, ground clearance and look of a SUVcombined with the space to fit all the family’sluggage on a longweekend away, yet compactenough for the city and its tight parking spac-es. Not to mention the fuel economy in an en-gine that is powerful enough to be taken com-fortably and safely on the open road.

Exterior

The EcoSport is built on the Fiesta plat-form. As the engines are small a lot of efforthas gone into clever design elements to en-hance the performance. And according toFord one of the ways in which this was done, was to look at the aerodynamics for a smallerdrag coefficient, and lowering fuel consump-tion.With a 200 mm ground clearance for those

potholes, speedhumps and pavements thatare in your way in the concrete jungle, theEcosport is also capable of driving in 550 mmdepth ofwater on adventurous off-road familyoutings in the real jungle.

The spare-wheel is placed, uncovered, onthe back door, and while tastes differ aboutthis, I thought the uncovered spare-wheeladded to the sporty look. Plus it could be use-ful for a bit of cushioning should I reverse intosomething, by accident.Best of all - the back door opens sideways

- which I regard as much more practical thanthe traditional upwards way. Despite theheaviness of the door (due to the spare wheelon it) it opens easily by pushing a small blackbutton situated in the brakelight. Simplypress the button; it unhatches and is easy toopen with one hand.Talking about heavy doors - since my chil-

dren were old enough to open and close cardoors they have been taught not to slam thedoors. This backfired a bit in theEcosport.Wedidn’t manage to have one ride without hav-ing to stop, right after pulling away, to allowsomeone to close their door properly.

Interior

Its Fiesta roots are also very evident in theinterior with controls similar to those of theFiesta. Here again, although a question of per-sonal taste, I would have preferred a differentlayout of the audio-system controls - it lookslike the Fiesta’s winglike game control styl-ing which I have never really liked. But that’s where the negative stops for me.

This vehicle is filled with Ford’s latest tech-nology like its famous “Sync” communica-tion device and all the latest voice-activatedsystems.There are 20 intelligent packing spaces

which include a cubbyhole that doubles as anair-conditioned beverage cooler, as well as aslide-out drawer under the front seat. This five-seater is quite spacious despite it

being a compact vehicle and the bootwas sur-prisingly accommodating too. We took thefamily out on a daytrip to Grahamstown fora primary school cricketmatch andmanaged

to fit everything we needed for a picnic. The seats can fold down and the backseats

can be folded away to increase the space.

Features

The Ecosport comes in three styling pack-ages, from thebasicAmbiente to themid-levelTrend and high spec Titanium. Some of thehigher spec features in the Trend and Titani-um include steering-wheel controls for the au-dio system and a USB connector as part of theFord SYNC system. The Titaniumhas leatherseats, cruise control, auto headlamps andrainsensing wipers.

Ride

The Ecosport is available in three types ofengines: the 1.0 litre turbo-charged 3-cylinderpetrol engine and the 1.5 litre turbo-diesel andpetrol. The vehicle test driver was the turbo-charged 1.0 litre and on our trip to Graham-stown it did not take long to realise why thissmall engine, won the coveted Engine of theYear title for two-years in a row. Apart fromthe powerful performance this engine alsohas cleaner emissions and is more fuel effi-cient (given as 5.7liter/100km for a combined

cycle). The power from this engine is quite unbe-

lievable and will easily give bigger engines arun for their money on the open road. One needs to gear down on uphills and

when overtaking, but changing the gears ofthe five-speed transmissionwas effortless andprecise - I never struggled to find the rightgear while concentrating on the road or traf-fic ahead. The ride felt a bit floaty at first, but it is

something one would expect due to the highground clearance. It provided a comfortableand pleasure-filled ride in a vehicle everystyle-sensitive teenager would be more thanhappy to be seen in.
