ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PASTOR

To the Members and Friends of the Peak Springhill Parish:

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you as your permanent pastor this past year. I have been so grateful to work with you because you are open to trying out new ideas: you were willing to try out a worship booklet, and when it was clear that it didn’t work as envisioned, you chalked it up as a learning experience. Now we are learning a new setting of the ELW, and you are willing to work your way through tunes that are first unknown and then soon familiar. You welcome new people who come to worship and take time to greet them and make them feel at home; so many people have told me at both congregations that they kept coming back because the people are so friendly.

You provide opportunities for adults to study God’s word: at VBS, during Lent, and each Sunday morning, as well as a study on the Small Catechism this summer and fall.

You are concerned about the children in our midst, that they may grow up knowing that God loves them and saves them—in programs like VBS and Littlest Lutherans. You welcome children in church, knowing that at times they will be restless or noisy; but you know that they are a sign of new life in our midst and that these youngest of the saints in our midst are the model that Jesus held up of faith in Mark 10, “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

Our youth are willing to volunteer to help lead and teach at both our VBS and the HUB VBS. They and our children dramatize the Christmas story and help us see Mary, Joseph and the other witnesses to the infant Jesus with new eyes.

You supported the Beach Retreat during the summer, sending food with us and the gift of much needed supplies for the Coastal Retreat Center, chaperones who cared about the youth entrusted to us, and funds to help meet the cost of the week. We were there with Grace Lutheran in Prosperity, so Pastor Michael and I planned joint meals and activities, such as a trip to Mother Emmanuel in Charleston, where we prayed and re-dedicated ourselves to working for peace and reconciliation.

You are concerned about those among us who are sick or in distress and ask about those on the prayer lists. Many of you bring food to those who are ill or who are grieving, or shut-in, wanting them to know they are not

forgotten. You visit those in nursing homes and hospitals, and make sure that I know who could use a visit from me. You joined together to sing carols for many of our older members at Christmas time, and even though not all of us sing well, those who heard us enjoyed our visits.

You are open and honest with me; you are not afraid to talk to me about the things that we disagree about, and you respectfully allow us to disagree on some ideas and perspectives because what unites us children of God is so much more important. You participate in the Dutch Fork Cluster, knowing that together as seven congregations we can have a greater impact on this community than any one church can do alone. We share meals and worship for Epiphany, Lent, Ascension, the Jubilee, Thanksgiving and this year for Advent. The five other pastors provide an important source of support for each other as we meet weekly for a lectionary study and occasionally for lunch. The Cluster meetings allow lay leaders from the seven churches to share ideas and plan programs. We are talking about ways to promote more youth activities that help our 6th-12th graders to get to know each other and enjoy both fellowship and community service opportunities.

You reach out to the community: with donations of clothes both winter and summer, with food and time at Finlay Park, with love and nurture at the HUB VBS, with support for the Academy for Success, for We Care, and Relay for Life. Children and youth joined with adults to represent our churches at the Chapin Labor Day Parade and the Peak Christmas Parade, passing out treats to those who lined the streets.

In 2016 we celebrated the baptism of Aidan and Kenlee Ard and the confirmation of Breana Amick and Joseph Ochoa. We welcomed five new adult members into our family. We celebrated the resurrection promised to those who died in the faith: Ann Ariail, Lewis Shealy, Bobbie Dale Eleazer, Jack Baker and Loretta Canon.

We pray for our leaders, our teachers, our musicians and choir members. We pray for those who visit, those who prepare meals, those who seek out opportunities for service. We pray for our altar guild and ushers, for those who run off bulletins and prepare newsletters, those who count the offering and those who keep track of the money. We pray for all those who provide leadership at worship, those who join us at worship and those who pray and contribute to our ministry. We ask God to continue to bless us that the Holy Spirit would fill us with courage, strength, wisdom and love that we may continue to serve our Lord with an open and willing heart.

We trust God to continue to pour out love upon us through the Holy Spirit and in the actions of those who make up God’s family. Our witness to the life-giving hope and abundant grace that God’s so graciously offers us helps us show God’s love.

We would like to thank these teachers for continuing to serve us as our teachers.

Evangelism Committee

The Evangelism Committee is committed to planning and implementing activities andprograms that reach out to all church members, our community, and our world byestablishing Christ-like relationships through love and service. The committee did a great job in 2016 working toward a productive and serving year! “Goodies” were taken to the teachers and staff at the Academy for Success at Valentines and again at Easter. The committee prepared desserts and helped served a catered meal at the Academy for their Senior Appreciation Night. Members prepared and went to serve food to the homelessat Finley Park on the 3rd Sunday of each month. The committee prepared and distributed “Goodie Bags” to the faculty and staff in August at the beginning of the new school year at the Academy for Success.

Also, the committee made “goodie bags” for students in the Parish congregations to encourage their return to a new school year. The teachers and staff of the congregation employed in the schools were recognized with “goodie bags”. In September, we participated in the Chapin Labor Day Parade with a float and passed out bags of candy and bookmarks with our Church information. There are many opportunities to evangelize doing God’s work with our hands! Our Committee needs more members, thing about joining us!

Finance & Stewardship

The Finance & Stewardship Committee continued to sponsor monthly articles in the Mt. Olivet Newsletter. These articles are published to make everyone aware of God’s call to us and to encourage members and friends to utilize their time, talents, and resources to serve Christ in the Spring Hill community and beyond.

In March, the committee reviewed the financial activities for the calendar year of 2015. This review documented that Mt. Olivet’s finances were in order to support our mission of God’s work.

In October, Mt. Olivet’s and Mt. Hermon’s committee chairmen met to develop a proposed budget for the parish with input from the Pastor and the Joint Treasurer. Later in the month, the committee adopted the proposed Parish Budget and held a working session to develop a recommended 2017 Budget for Mt. Olivet. The budgets were reviewed with the Congregational Council at their November meeting where they were approved for submission to the congregation. The budgets were presented and adopted at the Congregation’s Annual Meeting on November 20th.

A special thank you goes out to Linda Branham, our Congregational Treasurer, for all her work in managing the day to day financial activities of the congregation.

At Mt. Olivet we are blessed to have members who contribute services, materials, and other gifts which help keep our budget and expenses manageable. In 2017, we ask everyone to continue praying that the Holy

Lutheran Men in Mission

The Lutheran Men’s group experienced a good year in 2016; however, we were saddened by the death in June of faithful member and former Unit Secretary, Bobby Dale Eleazer. In October, a SCLMM Memorial Membership was presented by Pastor Beverly Aurand in memory of Bobby Dale. Our group normally meets on the first Monday evening of each month and shares a meal with WELCA. A business meeting with programs as scheduled follows the meal. We also enjoy quarterly meetings with other Lutheran Men’s Groups in the Heartland Conference.

Meetings in 2016 included programs on the following topics: Our 2016 Calendar, LMIM Unit Award Process, Operation InAsMuch, and The HUB Bookcase Project Report. Pastor Beverly Aurand, Pastor Charles Aurand, and Pastor Derald Edwards led LMIM and WELCA in Joint Bible Studies during February, July, and October. We also held planning sessions to prepare for Operation InAsMuch, Family Night, Lutheran Men’s Sunday, and Manager Scene Setup. The 2016 State Convention in February was attended by our President, Secretary, and Pastor. During 2016 we participated in various projects including: Displaying the Lenten Crosses, Assisting Social Ministry with Lenten Meal and Funeral Meal, Refurbishing and Delivering to the HUB bookcases for Operation In As Much,

The Lutheran Men’s group experienced a great year of fellowship, service, and spiritual growth and is currently being considered for a 2016 South Carolina Lutheran Men in Mission Outstanding Unit Award. We are proud of our service and strongly urge all men of the congregation to join us for fellowship, learning, and outreach. In 2017 we will continue to seek ways to increase our group’s membership and expand its service!

What WELCA Has Done in 2016

The SCWELCA convention project for 2016 was “For the Sake of Children” book collection.

The convention project gave us Women of the ELCA an opportunity to put our faith into

action. The theme of the convention was “For the Sake of the Children” and furthered the SC

Synod project to help children read more. We collected new and slightly used books. Thanks

to William Knopf for the books that were donated from Glenforest School library. We were

able to use these books for donations at both the SCWELCA convention and the Heartland

Conference meeting. In January, the officers were installed. In February, Pastor Charles Aurand

held a bible study. Several ladies attended the World Day of Prayer Service at St. Paul Lutheran

Church in Pomaria on March 4. A Spring Church Cleaning day was held on March 18.

Luminary bag donations were given in memory of Lisa Lindler, Thelma Derrick, Annie

Stoudemyer, Shirley Powers, and Shirley Mitchell to the Relay for Life. With our May JOY

offering we were able to purchase 2 goats with the ELCA “Good Gifts”. WELCA prepared the

meal for the June WELCA/LMM meeting, did our Operation Inasmuch project which was a

sing-along at Heritage at Lowman and Generations. Betty Jo Amick attended the SCWELCA

convention in Greenville in June. There were 532 books taken to convention for project. In

July, we collected and donated cleaning and other necessary items to the Coastal Retreat

Center. WELCA, along with Lutheran Men sponsored the Annual Family Night Barbecue in

August. The Heartland Conference meeting was held at Bethel, White Rock on September 11.

28

The Conference meeting was also collecting books for children. We donated 488 books. During

September, we collected food items and monetary donations for Chapin WE Care. Golden

Agers were also honored on Homecoming Sunday. In October, Pastor Derald Edwards

conducted a Bible study for WELCA and Lutheran Men. WELCA lead the worship service on

October 16. Vicki Wheatley delivered the sermon. We delivered 97 pounds of food items to

WE Care from the collections in September. The Executive meeting was held in November

along with the JOY offering program. With the JOY offering, we were able to purchase a

rooster, 10 chicks and honeybees through the ELCA “Good Gifts”. Officers were elected.

WELCA sponsored a Christmas Luncheon on Sunday, December 4, immediately after the

worship service. The congregation was invited to stay for lunch and then return to the Church

to decorate the Chrismon tree and the Sanctuary. Christmas gifts were distributed to the

Golden Agers.

Thanks to the congregation for all your support and help rendered to our WELCA in 2017. We

give God the Glory and Praise, for without Him, we could not have accomplished everything!

Come join us ladies of Mt. Olivet and help us grow.

Peace Be With You,

Worship and Music Committee

The Worship and Music Committee annually compiles the list for flowers, communion dates, communion assistants, lectors, ushers, counters and servers. The voice choir worked diligently to provide music throughout the Church year. Linda Amick serves as Director of Music and pianist. Sandra Hughes continues to serve as Organist. The choirs of Mt. Olivet, Mt. Hermon, and St. Johns led the Holden Evening Prayer, an Advent Service, on Wednesday evenings at the participating churches. It was an opportunity for the three churches to worship together and to share a meal. The Committee would like to thank everyone in the congregation who gave of their time and talents in assisting with the service of worship during 2016. Worship and Music Committee appreciates all of the hard work and commitment of members who volunteered to donate flowers, and serve as communion assistants, lectors, ushers, counters and servers. We look forward to providing another successful year of worship for the members of Mt. Olivet, and the Peak Springhill Parish.
