Mt. Laurel residents may havea small increase in their munici-pal tax bill in 2015.

Mt. Laurel council unanimous-ly approved the 2015 municipalbudget on first reading at lastweek’s meeting. The budget in-cludes a tax increase of $15.11 forthe average assessed home of $236,952.

The tax rate and the budgetboth increased slightly from lastyear. The total budget is just lessthan $37.6 million, a small bumpup from the $37.3 million of lastyear. The tax rate was increased$.006 per $100 of assessed value.

Township manager MaureenMitchell said there are no majorchanges to the budget this year. The proposed budget would keep

all township services intact.Council also passed an ordi-

nance on first reading to increasebudget appropriations up to 3.5percent to create a bank cap forpossible use in future years. Theordinance will be on the agendafor second reading and a publichearing at council’s next meetingon March 23.

The 2015 municipal budget willbe presented in detail during the

second reading and public hear-ing at council’s April 13 meeting.

Manager review discussedWith council preparing for its

annual review of the townshipmanager, there was discussionwhether reviews from depart-ment heads and township em-ployees should be considered.

Deputy Mayor Dennis Rileysuggested the township do a 360-degree job performance review. He felt getting feedback from em-ployees from all over the town-ship would be valuable. He addedmany private businesses use a360-degree job performance re-view for managers.

Councilman Jim Keenan dis-agreed, saying such a reviewcould put a strain on the town-ship.

    “I don’t think it’s healthy for

the manager’s office and thetownship,” he said.

Councilman Rich Van Noordagreed with Riley, but added the360-degree review is just a sugges-tion on how the township may beable to do things better.

“This is not calling into ques-tion the confidence of the manag-er,” he said. “I think’s she’s doing

a fantastic job.”Council members did agree they would

review Mitchell’s job performance as theyhave in past years. They plan to continue

discussing changes to the review process ata future meeting.

    Mt. Laurel Green Team updates

Council gave the Mt. Laurel Green Teampermission to adopt a section of Route 38in Mt. Laurel. The Green Team plans toadopt an area of the highway between ArkRoad and Fostertown Road. Mitchell saidthe organization will conduct a cleanup in

the area. Some members of council wor-ried about safety issues along the highway, but Mitchell said Mt. Laurel Police hasgiven the organization the go-ahead to

move forward with the project.“I reviewed it with traffic safety and

they have no issue with it,” she said. The Green Team is also planning a town-

ship-wide cleanup day for Saturday, April18.

Green Team plans township-wide cleanup day

Over the last few weeks, you

may have read on this page

our request to have you send

in the story of your marriage propos-

al. March 20 is National Proposal Day,

and we are celebrating the under-the-

radar “holiday” by telling the stories

of marriage engagements of the mem-bers of this community.

Why do we do this? As one of our as-

sociate editors would say, “we love

    love.”

And so, too, apparently, do plenty of

    other New Jerseyans. A recently-re-

leased Census report shows that New

Jersey has the lowest percentage of

people who have married two or more

times. So, when we say “I do,” we tend

to mean it. Or, at the very least, we

don’t intend to say it again if things

don’t go right the first time. We’d rather focus on that first point,

though. New Jersey has long held one

of the lowest, if not the lowest, divorce

rates in the nation, and experts are

never surprised to read this. Why? Be-

    cause New Jersey residents typically

fall into categories that put them at a

lower likelihood to get a divorce:

We have a high level of education,

so we often delay marriage to a later

age, making us more emotionally and

    financially stable. Money troubles are

a leading cause of divorce, and since a

good portion of our newlyweds are in

a better financial position than their

counterparts in the South and West –

where divorce rates are higher – we

    tend to avoid the D-word.

Which circles us back to what we’rereally talking about here – wonderful,

    head-over-heels love.

We have already received plenty of

    stories from the community about

    their memorable engagement stories,

and we thank you for them. Your sto-

ries will be told in these pages in the

coming weeks. If you want to share

your stories with the town, please

send them in. We love love, all year

    ‘round.

    in our opinion

Want a lasting marriage? The secret is simple – get married, and live, in New  Jersey

    Your story

Want to share the story of your marriageproposal and engagement with the rest oftown? Send us an email to the address atthe right.

Maybe he popped the question on a pic-turesque summer day at the beach, a ban-ner plane proclaiming his love flying over-

head. Perhaps she organized your familyand friends into a flash mob, asking foryour hand in marriage at the end of anelaborate song and dance. Or maybe it wassimple, both curled up on the couch athome, sharing a pizza and laughing over

the latest episode of a favorite sitcom.March 20 is National Proposal Day, and

no matter how you went from single to be-

trothed, The Sun wants to celebrate withyour stories. Was it the most romantic proposal in

history? A proposal that went hystericallywrong, but still with an enthusiastic “yes”at the end? Maybe the third time was the

charm? Whatever your story, we’re callingon you to send it in so we can share it witheveryone.

Send in your perfect (or not-so-perfect)proposal story, and a photo of you and yourspecial someone, to our news email, whichis listed to the right.

Prior to voting, council ex-pressed a few concerns about theplan and the site. The biggestissue was concern about trafficon Beaver Avenue. Council feltthe property would need a drive-way from Route 73 to the propertyto relieve traffic along Beaver Av-enue. Petrongolo said the proper-ty would also be connected to theother redevelopment zones tohelp improve traffic flow.

“We want to have that connec-tion to negate the traffic con-cerns,” he said.

The reduction in the setbackswas also a concern for some coun-cil members, including Council-man Jim Keenan, who was wor-ried the reduced setbacks wouldput new development too close tohomes in the area.

Petrongolo said the reducedsetbacks are necessary becausethe property is much smallerthan the one where Walmart is

being constructed. Having set-backs of up to 100 feet would leavevery little land to develop.

“It all has to do with the size of

the lot,” he said.Keenan was also worried about

the number of buildings on theproperty. In addition to iFly, the

property would be able to housesmaller pad sites for businesses.Though the current plan only al-lows up to 50 percent of the prop-erty to be covered with buildings,Keenan was worried there maybe too many smaller buildings.

“I’d rather have two nice build-ings than five smaller buildings,”he said.

Deputy Mayor Dennis Rileywas unsure about the buildingheight, saying he didn’t know if a

45-foot height requirement wouldbe enough for an indoor skydiv-ing facility.

Petrongolo explained if iFlywere to build on the property, thebuilding height limitation wouldbe more than enough to accom-modate it.

“The activities that take placein iFly are in the first floor of thebuilding,” he said.

Despite the concerns, councilunanimously voted to approvethe amended plan on first read-

ing. The plan will be on council’sagenda for second reading andpublic hearing at its next meetingon March 23.
