Course objective:
The objective of this course is to develop understanding of phase transformations in materials.
Understanding of phase transformation is essential in tailoring of the microstructure for getting specific physical properties.
Concepts of thermodynamics and Kinetics will be used to elucidate principles of phase transformations.
Learning objectives
The student will be able to;
Apply thermodynamics principle to understand phase diagrams
Differentiate between different microstructures; deformed, recrystallized, eutectic, diffusionless and so on
Suggest thermal and/or mechanical treatment to get a particular microstructure with the help of phase diagrams and kinetics of the process
Predict microstructure for a given thermal and/or mechanical process
Thermodynamics & Phase diagram Equilibrium, Single component systems, Binary solutions, Equilibrium in heterogeneous systems, binary phase diagram, Kinetics of phase transformation.
Diffusion Atomic mechanism of diffusion, Interstitial diffusion, Substitusional diffusion, Atomic mobility, Tracer diffusion in Binary alloys, High diffusivity paths, Diffusion in multiphase binary systems.
