MSW Program Overview • Emphasis on Direct Practice theory and skill
development. • Course based (non-thesis) program. • 450+ hours of supervised field education per
year in program.
MSW Program Streams
• 1-Year MSW – Advanced Standing Year – BSW required for admission
• 2-Year MSW
– Foundation Year + Advanced Standing Year – 4-year BA required for admission
MSW Program Objectives Direct Practice
• Educate social workers for advanced direct practice roles with individuals, families and groups.
• Develop social work administrative and supervisory competency.
• Consolidate community based responses to social need influenced by social planning and social policy knowledge.
• Enhance research based competency in a direct practice context.
Program Delivery • The MSW program commences in September. • Courses are offered in the Fall, Winter and
Summer. • Program requirements are usually completed in
10 months for the Advanced Standing program or in 24 months for the 2-year MSW program.
• Full-time only; no part-time or distance studies.

Orientation Foundation Year
• Students admitted to the 2-year MSW program take part in an Orientation to the program and the profession of Social Work.
• Graduate level resources and services are also covered.
ASIST Training • Applied Suicide Intervention Training
(ASIST). • School requires all students (BSW and
MSW) to complete before entering practicum.
• Training provided at cost; proof of prior completion will be considered.
Engagement Week Advanced Standing Year
• Kick start the Advanced Standing Year with a week dedicated to an orientation to the program including the key areas of student learning and an opportunity for self-evaluation led by the faculty who will be teaching you.
• There are also information sessions about student services and academic resources.
Reflective Practice Project • The RPP is designed to amalgamate theory,
values, research and practice. • Students will be guided in a critical examination
of a piece of work (i.e., single case, program or intervention) they have undertaken as part of their field practice learning.
Professional Development • The School of Social Work sponsors a series of
five professional development workshops on topics of interest identified by practicing social workers in the London community.
• Advanced Standing Year students are required to attend a minimum of three of the half day workshops offered.
• Foundation Year students may choose to attend workshops.
Integrative Capstone Experience (ICE)
• Your graduate studies will culminate in an Integrative Capstone Experience (ICE).
• Working in small groups you will be given the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you have acquired by engaging in a major case study exercise.
• Groups will present their cases to a panel of social workers and faculty.

Academic Requirements 1-Year MSW
• Bachelor of Social Work degree 2-Year MSW
• 4-Year Bachelors Degree
• One full-course equivalent in Research Methodology and Statistics
• Minimum 70% overall average in the last 20 half-courses or 10 full-courses
Non-Academic Requirements 1. Two Confidential References
– from a work/practice supervisor (required for 1-year MSW); voluntary; professional source; NOT ACADEMIC
2. Resumé – employment, supervisory and volunteer experience – membership in volunteer and professional associations – practica – community recognition, education, professional development,
research activities, presentations given, publications 3. Supplemental Questions 4. 1000+ hours of paid/unpaid work in human services is
recommended for 2-year MSW
Admissions Scoring System • Admission is based on a total overall score out
of 100 points. • 60% academic and 40% non-academic. • School of Social Work recommends admission
to candidates with the highest overall admissions score.
• Wait list is established.

Western’s Online Application • Online application – NOT through OUAC
Application Dates • Applications open October 2016 • Begin application as soon as possible, but
make sure you submit final application by January 15, 2017.
References • Referees are contacted by email with
instructions for submitting references. • Start your application early and input your
referee contact information to allow referees plenty of time.
• Check back with your application to see status of references (ie, have they been submitted yet) so you can follow up.

External Funding • Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS). Value up
to $17,000 per annum – Apply through Western once you start your online
application for the program • Social Science & Humanities Research Council
(SSHRC) • OSAP • No external funding is available for international
students.
Internal Funding • Entrance Scholarships: $1,500
– Awarded to highest ranking candidates • Graduate Student Assistantships: up to $5,000
