Head Coach Holly Hesse Bears head coach Holly Hesse is in her 32nd season leading the Bears’ program as the second-winningest coach in Missouri Valley Conference history with a 818-800-2 record. She began the 2020 season tied for 27th among all active NCAA Division I coaches in career victories. Coach Hesse is 35-53 vs. Southern Illinois in her career. Hesse joined the 800-win club on a thrilling walk-off win over UNI on March 24, 2019. The Bears also relished their second straight 30-win campaign in 2019, the first time MSU has achieved that feat since three straight MVC titles from 1996-98. Other recent milestones for Hesse include her 700th victory, which came on a 4-0 win at Illinois State on April 18, 2015, completing a doubleheader sweep in Normal, Ill. She then picked up her 750th win on Feb. 9, 2018 with a 4-0 win over Mississippi Valley State at the Bulldog Kickoff Classic in Starkville, Miss. She is the winningest coach in Missouri State history and second-winningest coach in Missouri Valley Conference history. Her tenure includes two regular-season MVC titles, five MVC tournament crowns and five NCAA Tournament appearances. Hesse has coached 36 different first-team all-conference players which have received 51 first-team all-conference honors. Twenty-three of Hesse’s players have gone on to earn NFCA All-Midwest Region honors, including two players -- Steffany Dickerson and Kyana Mason -- in 2019. Recent statewide honors for Hesse include induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Staff Excellence in Public Affairs Award, presented to her in 2016 by the MSU Board of Gover-nors for distinctive work and accomplishments in support of Missouri State’s public affairs mission. Series History Missouri State is 49-59 all-time against Southern Illinois in a series that dates back to 1970. The Bears are 25-16 at home (7-6 at Killian Stadium), 13-35 in Carbondale and 10-9 at neutral sites against the Salukis. MSU has won the season series each of the past two campaigns. The Bears took 2-of-3 fromt he Salukis last year, including a doubleheader split in Carbondale on March 12 before taking the rubber game in Springfield on April 9 in Springfield. In the opener, the Bears got a two-out, two-run single by Rachel Weber in the top of the 7th to secure a 5-3 comeback win. Daphne Plummer and Madison Hunsaker also had RBI singles for the Bears who got a complete game from Steffany Dickerson who fanned 5 and walked just 2. SIU won the nightcap, 11-2, with the Bears scattering 5 hits, including a go-ahead RBI by Dickerson in the first. In the return game in Springfield, the Bears walked off the Salukis, 2-1, on a grounder by Darby Joerling to score Bailey Greenlee in the bottom of the 7th. Dickerson picked up the win, allowing just 5 singles with 3 K’s. Academic Leaders Seven Missouri State University softball players were honored Oct. 2 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as All-American Scholar-Ath-letes in the organization’s annual recognition of its top individual performers with a 3.5 GPA or higher for the previous academic year. MSU’s honorees in the Easton/NFCA All-Ameri-can Scholar-Athlete program for 2018-19 included: Erin Griesbauer, Hannah Heinrichs, Darby Joerling, Abi LaValley, Kyana Mason, Payton Minnis and Carolyn Stock. Redshirt freshman Olivia Krehbiel also received NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete honors at Central Missouri before transfering to Missouri State.Returning All-Conference Players Missouri State’s 2020 roster includes a pair of returning All-Missouri Valley Conference first-team selections in pitcher Steffany Dickerson (Jr., Oklahoma City, Okla.) and catcher Darian Frost (Sr., Lee’s Summit, Mo.). In 2019, Dickerson became the first Missouri State pitcher since 2011 to win 20 games. She compiled a 20-11 ledger in the circle with a 2.37 ERA, four saves, 12 complete games, and 144 strikeouts in 183.1 innings of work. Frost missed the 2019 season due to off-season surgery but was All-MVC first team in 2018 after driving in 33 runs with 5 homers. She also collected 44 hits, batted .308 and had six sacrifice flies.
