Those of us who follow Michigan State University and college basketball look forward to the month of March and what is known as March Madness. It’s that exciting time of year when the NCAA tournament brings hope that our Spartans will provide more great memories during the chase to bring another national championship to our region.
The team at the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce is launching its own version of March Madness as we will provide our members with a wealth of business education and networking opportunities featuring no fewer than eight outstanding events this month.
By the time this edition of FOCUS magazine arrives on your desk, our Chamber team will have just caught its breath following the 101st Annual Dinner, at which hundreds of our members will have enjoyed great networking opportunities, drinking, dining and presentations of the Community Service, Outstanding Small Business and Legacy Awards.
There won’t be much time for rest as we move into an action packed month topped by Governor Snyder’s keynote address at the 2013 Legislative Dinner on March 19 (details on all our events can be found in the Calendar of Events on page 3).
The Economic Club luncheon on March 26 features former Congressman and national mental health advocate Patrick Kennedy. The youngest child of the late U.S. Sen. Edward “Ted” Kennedy will be speaking on the need to increase support and awareness for mental health issues.
The Chamber offers two new educational opportunities in March. The team at CBRE | Martin will present their Lansing ViewPoint, which examines trends in the office, retail and commercial real estate markets at a lunch briefing on March 7.
We are also proud to launch the first of our new Business Education Series on March 12. This series should be of particular interest to small businesses in the region who have a need for real-life training and educational opportunities. Our first program explores the value of internships, how to develop and maximize interns, and how they can benefit your business. We anticipate future programs in the coming months on topics such as wellness/healthcare, media and marketing, taxes and financials. We invite the small business community to provide the Chamber with topics and ideas for future programs.
I’d also like to extend special invitation to those of you who would like to learn more about the Chamber, our team and the services we offer at our latest Chamber 360 meeting on March 7.
Finally, we have our popular Member Mixer, not once, but twice in March! We’ll have our first ever morning mixer at Grand Traverse Pie Company on March 13, followed by our after-work mixer sponsored by the Lansing Board of Water & Light and Franklin Energy on March 14.

The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce Economic Club is pleased to announce that Patrick J. Kennedy, former U.S. Representative turned national mental health advocate, will keynote the March luncheon held Tuesday, March 26. Kennedy, 45, is the youngest child of former U.S. Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy.
Kennedy is being brought to Michigan by the Hope Network to advance the statewide conversation about the importance of integrating mental and physical health. The announcement of Kennedy, who openly discusses his personal struggles with mental illness, coincides with Hope Network’s intention in 2013 to advocate for increased public access to mental health care.
Kennedy, co-founder of One Mind for Research, served 16 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and is predominantly known as the author and lead sponsor of the Mental Health Parity & Addiction Equity Act of 2008. This dramatic piece of legislation provides access to mental health treatment to tens of millions of Americans who previously went untreated.
“As Hope Network approaches 50 years of providing specialty and community health services to the people of Michigan, we also acknowledge that there is much
to be done in the way of integrating mental healthcare and access,” said Phil Weaver, Hope Network president and CEO. “Hope Network pledges to lead the statewide, bi-partisan effort to integrate mental and physical healthcare in a way that is accessible to those in need.”
“Recent national tragedies have shone light on the underfunded mental health system here in Michigan and beyond, and have raised the need for real, open discussions on mental illness,” said
Tim Daman, president and CEO of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. “Untreated mental illness costs the U.S. more than $100 billion a year in lost productivity, making a strong business case for continued awareness and improved funding for mental health issues in the United States.”

Pure Michigan: The Gold Standard for Tourism Promotion
In just seven years since Pure Michigan made its debut as the state’s marketing brand, the campaign has grown into one of the most nationally recognized and successful tourism campaigns of all time. The man who helped launch Pure Michigan, George Zimmermann of Travel Michigan, told the crowd at the February Economic Club luncheon that other state tourism officials from around the country have labeled Pure Michigan as the gold standard for tourism promotion.
“Pure Michigan is recognized for its highly unique, beautiful, artistic and well-crafted expression of what Michigan is all about,” said Zimmermann. “We are recognized as the poster child for tourism campaigns.”
The growth for the Pure Michigan campaign is astounding. The year before the campaign started, Zimmermann’s Travel Michigan office was investing $5 million in advertising. For years, the focus was on attracting tourists from other Midwest communities including Chicago, Milwaukee and Indianapolis. Zimmermann told the Economic Club crowd that in 2009, the decision was made to take Pure Michigan to a national audience, and a corresponding increase in spending has pushed the campaign’s annual budget to $25 million, making Pure Michigan the sixth largest tourism campaign in the nation.
The economic results have been incredible according to Zimmermann. Research has shown that as of 2011, more than 100 million people were aware of the Pure Michigan brand, after just three years of promotion. Just last year, the campaign had motivated 3.2 million trips to Michigan that resulted in $1 billion in spending at Michigan businesses. The return on investment for the state was $4.90 for each dollar spent on Pure Michigan advertising.
Zimmermann says the next phase for Pure Michigan is to reach out to an international audience. Governor Snyder has proposed a $4 million increase in the campaign budget specifically for that purpose, with Toronto as the first target, followed by Europe, especially Germany, and Asia.
“Toronto is Chicago number two for us,” said Zimmermann. “It is a huge, affluent market and the potential is tremendous.”
Pure Michigan will continue to emphasize bringing in out-of-state visitors. Zimmermann noted there are 320 million people in the country, most of whom have never considered a vacation in Michigan.
“We are just at the beginning of our journey in many ways,” said Zimmermann.

The state of Michigan’s roads and infrastructure, funding for K-12 education, and Medicaid expansion are sure to be among the list of hot topics Governor Rick Snyder will discuss at the Annual Chambers of Commerce Legislative Dinner on Tuesday, March 19. The Chambers of Commerce Legislative Dinner is hosted by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) and includes chamber officials and business leaders from across the state.
“The Legislative Dinner has always featured spirited discussions about the leading issues in state government,” said Kristin Beltzer, LRCC senior vice president, government relations and public affairs. “With Governor Snyder discussing how he intends to build on his accomplishments during his first two years in office, this year should be no exception.”
Governor Snyder has received acclaim from much of the business community in his first two years of office for eliminating the Michigan Business Tax and replacing it with a corporate income tax, as well as for the elimination of the personal property tax. The Governor’s agenda for this year is highlighted by his plan to rebuild Michigan’s infrastructure, including a proposal to increase fuel taxes and registration fees to fund that rebuild.
The 2013 Legislative Dinner will be held at the Lansing Lexington Hotel on Tuesday, March 19. The event begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and the Governor Snyder’s speech. U.S. Representative Tim Walberg says he is disappointed over leadership issues in Washington during recent negotiations over the federal budget. Congressman Walberg made his remarks before Greater Lansing business leaders during a recent meeting hosted by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. Walberg, a Republican whose 7th Congressional district includes Eaton County, was particularly harsh on what he called a “lack of leadership” from the White House and Senate Democrats who he accuses of refusing to come to grips with the magnitude of the nation’s fiscal crisis.
“The longer we kick the can down the road, the worse it is going to be for our grandkids,” said Congressman Walberg.
Walberg told business leaders that small businesses are getting hit particularly hard because of uncertainty he says is being caused by a failure to
reach needed budget agreements in Washington. He says Republicans and Democrats must come together and agree on budget cuts, tax and regulatory reform, setting aside partisan differences for the good of the country.
“I will accept anything that promotes growth, opportunity and prosperity in our country,” said Walberg. “Even if it comes from a Democrat.”

The philosophy for growth that MSU Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) has adhered to throughout the years is pretty straight forward: take care of its members with superior service and products; build a great internal culture that emphasizes hiring, developing and supporting outstanding staff; and embracing its role as a corporate steward committed to a vibrant community.
It’s hard to argue with results.
From its opening in 1937, operating out of a desk drawer in the Michigan State University Administration building, to the recent construction of a LEED® Gold-certified headquarters on West Road in East Lansing, MSUFCU has grown to become the largest university-based credit union in the world. “We treat people well,” said Clobes. “Employees who are treated well, in turn treat members well.”

through several interviews and then are required to attend a series of training classes before being placed on a job. Employees interested in advancing are encouraged to take part in job shadowing to learn about other internal positions, and also have opportunities to test their abilities by taking on a project to help “learn the ropes” about other aspects of the operation.

Technology is playing an increasingly significant role in the continued growth of MSUFCU. To help meet the needs of the 20 percent of credit union members who don’t live in Michigan and the 30-40,000 members in the state who don’t live in close proximity to a branch, the MSUFCU team developed its own home banking program. Recent technology initiatives include development of mobile apps for Android and Apple devices and e-depositing of checks. Online chats and e-mail question services were utilized by members more than 100,000 times in the past year.
“All those questions are answered by people,” said Clobes. “We do not script the answers.”
As for the future, MSUFCU expects to expand its emphasis on business products and services, as supported by its fairly new business services department. Technology initiatives will include integrating bill payment features into mobile applications and text messaging alerts desired by customers. A merger with Eaton County Educational Credit Union is expected to be finalized on April 1, which
will give MSUFCU members access to its first Eaton County branch outside Delta Township.
Growth will continue at MSUFCU, but it will be managed smartly.
“We could grow faster, but we want to make sure we protect our brand, culture and service,” said Clobes.
One can also be certain that the core MSUFCU philosophy - taking care of people from the inside out - will continue at the heart of its day-to-day operations. The growth will most certainly take care of itself.
The results of the “growing from within” philosophy can be seen in all departments at MSUFCU, starting at the top of the organization. President and CEO Patrick McPharlin joined the team in 1973, and held several positions before assuming the top job in 2000. Clobes started in the marketing department 16 years ago and worked her way up through the chain before assuming her present position as chief operating officer.
Staff retention is bolstered by the generous compensation packages at MSUFCU. In addition to a strong salary structure, MSUFCU is one of few organizations that continues to pay 100 percent of employee health coverage. Employees also receive a two-to-one match on 401K contributions up to the first five percent, tuition reimbursement and the opportunity to participate in corporate wellness initiatives.
MSUFCU has been widely recognized as a great place to work. The organization was named as one of the Top 100 Workplaces in Michigan by the Detroit Free Press, for the second consecutive year. Clobes says MSUFCU operates under a corporate philosophy that a business in the community has a responsibility to enrich the surrounding community.
“People who consider locating here want arts and culture, which is an important part of building a great community,” said Clobes. “If we have a more vibrant community, we create more jobs, which ultimately makes us all stronger.”
Employees at MSUFCU take an active role in community endeavors. Each department is represented on a charity committee that selects an organization to support for the first six months of the year. In addition to volunteering with that organization, staff-only fundraisers usually generate $30-40,000 for the chosen non-profit. In the second half of the year, staff work centers around supporting the United Way. In 2012, MSUFCU staff members contributed $55,000 to the United Way campaign.

The 101st Annual Dinner of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) provided a festive setting as some of the region’s outstanding businesses and business leaders were recognized for their contributions to the community. The Chamber’s prestigious Community Service Award was presented to Dr. Joseph Hess. CBRE | Martin was honored with the Outstanding Small Business Award, and Consumers Energy was presented with the Chamber Legacy Award.

The Community Service Award honors outstanding individuals who give their time and expertise to the community, above and beyond their own field of endeavor, and demonstrate excellence, creativity and initiative in all they do. This individual is an inspiration to the community, both in their profession and in their efforts to make the Lansing region a better place to live, work and play.
Dr. Joseph Hess is the current President of the Greater Lansing United Nations Association, a volunteer position he has held since 2006. After serving the community for 40 years as a private physician, Dr. Hess became a leading advocate in this region for developing
business trade ties between Michigan and the world. Dr. Hess was instrumental in the development of the LRCC’s day-long International Trade Symposium and the creation of the International Trade Center in Mid-Michigan. He has also served as a mentor to international business professionals and is active
in MSU’s Community Volunteers for International Programs (CVIP), a program which places MSU international students with host families in the Greater Lansing region.
The Outstanding Small Business Award honors a local small business that meets the criteria of stability, innovation, a commitment to community, perseverance and a commitment to diversity.

Recently, the company faced an economic crunch when many of their clients’ needs changed from expansion to contraction. The Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), housed at the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC), is pleased to report that they have helped tri-county (Ingham, Eaton and Clinton) businesses land over $54 million in government contracts for 2012, creating or retaining 1,096 jobs. The total of $54,832,919 is almost double the 2011 total of $28,891,854.
Statewide PTAC offices reported a total of $1.357 billion in awards was given to Michigan businesses in 2012. This total includes all local, state and federal contracts received by any size business in Michigan.
The Procurement Technical Assistance Centers of Michigan provide local businesses with the resources and know-how to successfully obtain government contracts. Through seminars,
events, training and consultations, PTACs assist Michigan businesses with obtaining and performing on federal, state and local government contracts.
“The PTAC service continues to gain visibility in the business community as a viable option for economic growth in a challenging, but profitable, sector of business – government contracts,” said Kim Langenberg, Lansing Satellite PTAC Office of South Central Michigan. “We are so pleased to partner with the Lansing Regional Chamber to help any tri-county business – at no charge - navigate the cumbersome and confusing world of obtaining and performing on government contracts.”
