COUNTWIDE YARD SALE/BAKE SALE

Your gently used items may be someone else’s treasurers! The Countywide Yard Sale/ Bake Sale is a communitywide 4-H ser-

vice project. 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Crystal Valley Care Fund. The Crystal Valley Care Fund helps Oceana families facing catastrophic hardships-

house fire, life-threatening illnesses and other life-altering moments. 4-H families are encouraged to donate CLEAN, WORKING, YARD SALE READY items for the yard sale on Tuesday, July 20th. We need donated items to make the sale an-other success, especially non-clothing items. Every item that sells allows the Crystal Valley Care fund to do more right here in our community! Please only donate working, non-broken items and clothing with no stains or tears. Help is needed beginning Tuesday, July 20th to help receive and tag items for the yard

sale from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The sale will run Tuesday, July 20th through noon on Saturday the 24th.

We need members, leaders and parents to call the MSU Extension Office at 873-2129 to sign up for a time slot.

Remember the pledge; I pledge: My Head to clearer thinking, My Heart to greater loyalty,

My HANDS to larger service, and My health to better living

For my club, my COMMUNITY, my country and my world!

Keep an eye out for the youth or adult who goes

above and beyond as everyone is eligible to be

nominated for the John Sayles Memorial award.

John went above and beyond every day. If you

looked around during Fair, or any time, John had a

smile and was quietly pitching in to help whenever he

saw the need. He did it not for the recognition,

nonclub point, or pat on the back, he did it because he

was just a genuinely good, caring, giving person.

Keep your eyes out for a 4-H youth, leader or adult who

fits this description to nominate at the end of the year.

LARGE MARKET LIVESTOCK INFORMATION

HOOF TRIMMING

The 4-Star 4-H Club is hosting a HOOF TRIMMING on Saturday, July 17th at Brian &

Michelle Holladay’s (4552 N 104th Ave Hart) from 10:00am-4:00pm

You MUST text or call Michelle Holladay at 231-742-0414 to make an

appointment time.

LARGE & SMALL MARKET INFORMATION

ATTENTION ALL MARKET MEMBERS! This year, the Oceana County Fair’s livestock auction supporters again have the option of helping out families in need by purchasing an animal that’s meat will go to families in need!

Through Feeding America’s Grand Champion Giving program, buyers have the option of donating an animal to Feeding America West Michigan.

The food bank covers all transportation, slaughter, and processing costs of the donated livestock, which the buyer would typically be responsible for, and the donors receive a tax benefit.

It is a great way for the buyers to further support 4-H, and help those in need!

A huge THANK YOU to NUTRIEN AG SOLUTIONS

Large and Small Market auctions!

They are not only going to sponsor the food but they are going to do the serving to help

out the clubs and parents. This year, due to food safety restrictions, the reception will be

items such as a bag with bottled water, chips and a treat.

This will be a huge help and it is greatly appreciated!!

Make sure to thank one of their representatives that night.

LARGE & SMALL MARKET INFORMATION

A FEW TIPS FROM FORMER BUYERS ON PROMOTING & SELLING YOUR ANIMALS (whether in person or by phone you should still adhere to some of the following

suggestions such as you being the contact person.)

PROMOTE YOUR ANIMAL:

Some members present their potential buyers with a picture of their ani-

mal and give them monthly updates leading up to the Fair. Please note

that it says MEMBERS….NOT your parents or siblings. Make sure YOU are

the one your buyer has contact with. A chaperone should be with you but

you should be doing the talking to promote 4-H & your market project.

Make sure that you contact your previous buyer(s).

If a buyers has been thanked well in the past, odds are they will come back to support

you in the future.

Stop in, or send, your potential buyers a reminder that the auction is coming up and

that you hope to see them there! You are marketing your animal and yourself. Be respectful, shake their hands, look

them in the eye when speaking and always be polite.

AFTER THE SALE:

While at the auction a handshake, smile, genuine appreciation shown while at the

auction means a lot.

A printed thank you note and possibly frame the picture you present them with after-

wards (it can be an inexpensive frame from the Dollar Store, etc.)

Send a PROPER THANK YOU NOTE, not one scratched on a scrap piece of paper!

Some buyers have received a nice baked good with their thank you and picture and

have greatly appreciated it.

A thank you in the paper is nice but it IS NOT REQUIRED, however the buyer’s,

especially if they are businesses, do appreciate the advertisement.

Deliver your thank you and picture in a timely manner by the 4-Her, NOT the parents or

older siblings, and show sincere appreciation.

RABBITS & POULTRY

Rabbits- At this time there will not be anyone tattooing rabbits at the Fairgrounds. Make sure they are tattooed before arriving.

Poultry– pullorum testing will be done at the Poultry Building, by the

Superintendent. Refer to the fair book for testing times.

Both 4-H members’ 4-H numbers and Open Youth participant numbers are included in this newsletter. If you do not see your name, please let Toni know, as it was inadvertently left off, or the youth never fully enrolled. Remember that youth 7 and under need to use their “Y” Youth number when entering classes if they want to compete.

If they would just like Cloverbud participation ribbons, then they use their 4-H numbers. Youth must pick one or the other, they may not compete in some things but not others. If choosing to the Y “youth open” number it must be used for everything entered.
