EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH 2014
Musical events for children, students, teachers and families
32
The MSO’s innovative Education and Community Outreach program provides wonderful opportunities for children to be introduced to the joy of music.
From active music-making of the Family Jams to the programs focused on specific age groups from Prep to Year 12, the Orchestra’s programs for schools, parents, grandparents, teachers and amateur musicians provide accessible pathways to music for people of all ages.
Music is a vital part of a child’s education. It encourages listening and team work, inspires creativity and lets imaginations soar. I encourage you to get involved in this wonderful series of initiatives.
Mrs ElizabEth ChErnov Patron, Melbourne SyMPhony orcheStra education and coMMunity outreach PrograM

My profound thanks to our individuals, Trusts, Foundations and Government partners who help us bring these programs to life.

australian composition Post 1910: katy abbott Introduced Species
Dr Katy Abbott composer and presenter
Luke Dollman conductor
Join Melbourne-based composer Katy Abbott as she presents her new work – Introduced Species – in a live performance workshop at three schools across metropolitan Melbourne. Inspired by the paintings of the same title by Australian artist, Matthew Quick, Katy’s composition explores the impact that human interference can have on music in the same way that Matthew’s art explores the impact that human interference can have on our environment.
Supported by a comprehensive online resource, the performance workshops will include:
• a performance of the work by musicians of the MSO;
• a detailed analysis of the work by the composer;
• an introduction to Matthew Quick’s artwork;
• a discussion around the environment.
A draft score of Introduced Species will be available for purchase from the Australian Music Centre from the start of Term 1. This will be automatically updated once the final version has been lodged in the week following these performances.
This program and its affiliated resource has been specifically designed to link in with the following VCE Music Study Design outcomes:
• MUSIC PERFORMANCE Unit 2: Outcome 4 Unit 3 and 4: Outcome 3
• MUSIC INVESTIGATION Units 3 and 4: Outcome 2
• MUSIC, STYLE AND COMPOSITION Units 1-4 (especially 3-4): Outcomes 2 and 3
It also links into the Australian Curriculum Cross-curriculum priority: Sustainability.

The Pizzicato Effect is a partnership between the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Meadows Primary School which creates new learning pathways for children in Broadmeadows through the introduction of instrumental music teaching. The pilot program commenced in 2009 to provide a shared focus for two schools which were merging at the time as a result of a community regeneration project.
In 2014, the program will provide access to quality music education for students across the whole school, commencing with Kodály training, and progressing to group instrumental lessons on violin, viola, cello or double bass. Upon entering Grade 5, those displaying a connection to their instrument are invited to continue their tuition in a more individualised environment.
Additionally, an after-school string orchestra provides senior students in the program with the opportunity to further their skills as instrumentalists and learn to work, respond and play together in an ensemble environment. The MSO provides all instruments and weekly instrumental and aural lessons lead, by a team of MSO teaching artists. Performance opportunities and the option for children, families and teachers to access MSO concerts are also facilitated.
The impact of the program within the school and the Broadmeadows community has been very positive. The children have developed a strong relationship with their MSO mentors and a love of music, and their classroom teachers have reported improved focus, self confidence, grades and behaviour. Formal research into the developmental assets, social-emotional wellbeing and educational impact acquired from participation in The Pizzicato Effect is currently being conducted by the University of Melbourne.
The Pizzicato Effect is generously supported by a number of individual donors and Foundations. On the basis of the impact, momentum and extraordinary motivation now being experienced, further support is currently being sought to ensure the project and its potential for these students and others is realised into the future.
To find out how you can contribute to The Pizzicato Effect, please call Jessica Frean at the MSO on (03) 96261107 or email [email protected]

“This program is affording our children so many
valuable opportunities, and the transformation in the children
and their confidence across all areas of learning and social interaction
is without doubt. Yet the single most important achievement and benefit of this
initiative, from my perspective, is that The Pizzicato Effect is helping our
children take pride in who they are.”
