A SPECTACULAR RETURNA THREE-CONCERT PROGRAM CELEBRATING THE MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S
RETURN TO ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE, HAMER HALL, AUSTRALIA’S PREMIER CONCERT VENUE
The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra makes its debut in Melbourne’s beautifully refurbished concert hall in this special three-program
festival, conducted by Markus Stenz.
Act 1 Thursday 9 and Friday 10 August Act 2 Thursday 16 and Saturday 18 August Act 3 Wednesday 22 August
A much-loved figure in Melbourne’s musical life, Markus Stenz was the Orchestra’s Chief Conductor from 1998 to 2004. Renowned for his sense of musical adventure and podium
panache, he is the perfect maestro to welcome the MSO’s audiences back to the Hall.
The first concert is an epic exploration of orchestral sonority, culminating in Mahler’s spectacular hymn to nature, love and faith. The second program features a superb cast
of soloists in a concert performance of Act 1 of Wagner’s mighty Die Walküre. In keeping with the surprise piece Stenz used to perform at the end of many of his programs – which he called
Act 3 – details about the third concert will be kept secret until the night of the performance. But we promise it will put the Hamer Hall acoustic renovations through their paces!

Curated by eighth blackbirdA Grammy Award-winning, Chicago-based sextet, eighth blackbird combines the finesse of a
finely-honed string quartet with the energy of a rock band and the theatricality of a circus troupe.

Brahms Two RhapsodiesBrahms Variations and Fugue on a Theme of HandelBrahms Piano Quintet
Brahms’ piano music spans his entirecreative life. In the mighty Variationsand Fugue of 1861, he takes a themefrom a Handel keyboard suite andfashions from it a powerful pianopanorama. The Two Rhapsodies, which he created nearly 20 years later, are among his most lyrical works forthe instrument, while the masterfulQuintet, a work which took Brahmsmany years to complete, is a landmarkin the history of chamber music –bold, passionate and written on a grand scale.
