MSJ Weekly Home Learning Feedback Guidance Week commencing 4th
May 2020
English Maths Other Learning Challenge Mon
This session has a grammar
focus revising expanded
noun phrases. The children
have covered this concept
multiple times before.
An expanded noun phrase
can be used to add
additional detail to a
sentence.
Key terms:
Noun: person, place, object
or thing.
Determiners:
Adjective: a describing
word. Often goes before the
noun. Remember commas to
separate multiple adjectives.
Arithmetic:
Daily arithmetic answers
are included at the end of
the booklet for children
to be able to self-mark.
White Rose:
PLEASE NOTE:
White Rose is only
uploading the videos to
their website from this
week. Therefore, the
activities have been
collated into a booklet for
your child. The answers
have also been provided so
that the children can self-
mark their understanding.
This week, the children
are consolidating their
work on fractions.

Tues
This week, the children will
be working on writing a
scene description of a VE
day street party.
This session focuses on
descriptive vocabulary
generation.
The idea here is that the
children apply their
understanding from the
session yesterday by trying
to incorporate expanded
noun phrases for impact.
The children should consider
what they might see, smell,
hear, taste and feel at a VE
Street Party.
Ideas:
-a mouth-watering spread of
food
-some ear-piercing, colourful
fireworks
-a jolly, celebratory
atmosphere
-the ornate, grand piano
-the bustling, impressively
decorated street

Wartime recipes
Suggested wartime recipes are given
but if you don’t have access to
different ingredients, please don’t
worry. Your child might like to
produce an information book or
PowerPoint about the different
wartime recipes instead.
The Year 6 D&T food learning
objectives cover the following:
-Understand the importance of correct storage and
handling of ingredients (using knowledge of micro-
organisms).
-Measure accurately and calculate ratios
of ingredients to scale up or down from a recipe.
-Demonstrate a range of baking and
cooking techniques.
-Create and refine recipes, including ingredients,
methods, cooking times and temperatures.

Sewing challenge:
Again, we appreciate that this task
requires resources. It you don’t have
sewing needles and thread, your child
could carry out some research about
the campaign instead or perhaps
produce a labelled diagram of a toy
they would like to make.
The children have practised their
sewing techniques during our Robin
Hood project.
They should be familiar with the
running and blanket stitches!
Wed
The focus of this session is
to unpick the example scene
description.
This feature spotting
exercise will be familiar with
the children; we regularly
unpick texts to identify the
structural and language
features.
When the children have
finished analysing the text,
they may like to plan out
their paragraphs and
consider what vocabulary
they will try to incorporate.
Examples:
Structural features:
-Writing organised into
paragraphs.
-Subordinate clauses
-A range of high-level
punctuation
-Past tense
-Passive voice
Language features:
-Rich, descriptive vocab
-Archaic word choices
-Expanded noun phrases
-Hyphenated adjectives
-Fronted adverbials

Plan your own street party
Britain had been tested to the limit by the Second World War. It was the
first total war, where civilians were targeted at home as much as soldiers on
the battlefield. Every aspect of life in Britain was geared towards winning the
war. Food, clothing, petrol and even soap were rationed and families were
separated through evacuation, military service and war work.
When the war ended, there were celebrations all over the country and street
parties were held in towns and villages throughout Britain. People danced with
joy. Despite the celebrations, many had lost loved ones and it was a time to
remember them.
Typical weekly rations:

The focus of this session is the
children using their street
party planning sheet to write
their own scene description.
It is expected that most
children would write one side of
A4. However, some children
(who require a little more
support) may write one
paragraph.
The children should aim to
include description for effect.
If you have a
dictionary/thesaurus, the
children should be encouraged
to make regular reference to
these.
When finished, the children
should proof-reading carefully.
Some children may like to
carefully copy up in best.
This could be done by hand or
word processed.

Religious Education
In R.E, our new unit is based on the
key question:
Does belief in Akhirah
(life after death) help
Muslims lead good lives?
Back in the Autumn term,
the children began learning about
Islam and looked in depth at the Five
Pillars.
The Five Pillars of Islam are an
important part of Muslim life. They
are five things that a Muslim must do
so they can live a good and responsible
life. They include: -The declaration of faith (Shahada)
-Praying five times a day (Salat)
-Giving money to charity (Zakah)
-Fasting during the month of Ramadan (Sawm)
-A pilgrimage to Makkah at least once in a
lifetime (Hajj)
Over the next few weeks, we will
explore:
-What motivates us to take certain
actions?
-How do Muslims lead a good life?
-How are Muslims influenced by the
Five Pillars of Islam?
-What is your vision for the world?

Computer Coding With computer science,
you can create anything
you can imagine: stories,
art, animation, music, websites and more!
Computer science uses code to make
projects called programs. Code is another
way of saying "instructions for the
computer."
There are a lot of ways to write code, but
the main way we use at MSJ is a
programming language called Scratch.
For this activity, the children will choose
an everyday hero from their own life.
They will then build a project using code
that shows your hero as a superhero!
If your child wants an additional challenge
or is feeling super confident, they might
like to follow the additional tutorials to
programme their sprite. For example,
they might like to code their sprite to fly
over buildings or spin!

As today is a Bank Holiday, we have not set any formal learning. Instead, the children have been set an optional task linked to the VE
celebrations. A template is provided below should your child wish to use it.
