Fathers Day Handball Tournament Life Time Fitness, St. Louis Park, MN

June 16, 2012 The entries were down but the competition was fierce at the Life Time Fitness Father’s Day handball event. Life Time Fitness is committed to promoting handball and has hosted more tournaments in the past two years in Minnesota than any other organization. We had players travel from as far away as Des Moines and Mankato but many local players were unavailable to support the one-day Iron Man handball extravaganza. Life Time Fitness gave us all their beautiful and immaculate courts to use and provided Powerade, organic fruit for breakfast and a healthy lunch at our break. The USHA 21 balls were a perfect batch so it was a great day for handball. The morning schedule was set up as pool play where players played several games of 15 to decide in which bracket they would play in after lunch. The Division II finals featured John Laliberte over Steve Vazquez. They had a tough match with ace serves and great gets but John was able to out last Steve in a close tie-breaker. Vazquez had a tough semi-final match with Lee Johnson, of Des Moines. I want to especially thank Lee who has supported every Life Time tournament. He is a true ambassador of the game and I always enjoy seeing his game improvement at each tournament. Laliberte knocked off Jerad Michels of

2012 Top Ten

Based on the results of the 2012 State Open Singles, these are the Top Ten handballers in MN.

1. Andy Nett 2. Pete Crouser 3. Brian Burke 4. Mike Gustafson 5. Mat Langhorst 6. John Stoffel 7. Steve Johnson 8. Tim Kappes 9. Tyler Stoffel 10. Steve Tamminga

If you think you’re better than these guys, compete in the Open Singles tournament in 2013.

Mankato. Jerad is a prodigy of the Minnesota State Handball program and has a ton of potential. He is a tremendous athlete with a lot of power. Jerad only has a year under his belt but with his athleticism, enthusiasm and positive attitude, I expect to see Jerad climb the ranks quickly. Boonma Vang took the consolation and is a Midway up and comer. Vang has a lot of skills including quickness, two good hands and power. As he continues to play different players, Vang will also improve his game quickly. Donovan Foley dominated the Division I bracket going 7-0 in games played. He defeated Mike McQuillian in the Semi finals and Steve Johnson in the Championships. Johnson had to battle with Donovan’s younger brother, Quinn Foley, who has only played handball infrequently for a year and is already playing A ball. Quinn is a top ranked tennis player who just completed his first year of college and tennis at Luther College in Iowa. Mike McGraw and Greg Taylor tied for 5th place in the Division I bracket. Again, I want to thank all the participants for showing their true love of handball by supporting these tournaments. The next series of Life Time Fitness Tournaments was the “Dog Days of Summer Tournament,” which was held at the Fridley Life Time Fitness August 11, 2012. Life Time Fitness has listened to what the players want.: One-day tournaments with low entry fees but still provide balls, hospitality and awards. I hope to see more MSHA members and board members at our next event!

2012 State Open Singles LifeTime Fitness, St. Louis Park, MN

April 27-28, 2012 The 2012 Minnesota State Open Singles relocated to the LifeTime Fitness Club in St. Louis Park while the U of M undergoes remodeling. The club is a great facility but some folks got lost trying to find the viewing gallery with the split court area. The tournament committee did an outstanding job, again, running a first class event. The 2012 annual MSHA membership meeting was held during the tournament and Steve Tamminga, Mike Kloos and Matt Johnson were re-elected to the MSHA board for new three-year terms. The Secretary and Treasurer provided short reports to the 50

people gathered and 2013 tournament formats (including a plan to hold the Masters Doubles in Mankato) were discussed. Upcoming events were noted and several discussion items were addressed. The question this year was: could anyone really challenge Andy Nett for the State Open Singles Championship? Or would he repeat in 2012? Ranked ninth in the country, Andy demonstrated a new level of play not seen in Minnesota for a few years. No one scored more than six points on Andy as he demolished all challengers. Nett easily handled an up-and-coming Brian Burke who also beat a strengthening Mat Langhorst. Pete Crouser had a little tougher go of it with a tough first match against Tim Kappes followed by an even tougher opponent in Mike Gustafson. Neither of these put a serious dent in Pete’s armor. But Nett never let Crouser get anything going in the finals – game, set, match! Mat Langhorst defeated John Stoffel for the consolation honors and Brian Burke had an entertaining match with Mike Gustafson for the third place trophy. The A division offered some of the best matches in the tournament – each one of the Friday first round matches were hotly contended and each went to a tie-breaker

their game.

I was asked to share some of this advice in this newsletter. Out of all the advice I have received, there is one tip I can give that has done more to improve my game than anything else. It doesn’t matter what part of your game you want to improve, I guarantee this one tip will help.

Practice.

If you want to improve your game, you need to go into the court by yourself and practice hitting shots that you are struggling with. If you want to improve your left hand ceiling shot, you need to go in the court and continue to hit that shot over and over again. If you want to be able to shoot the ball better, you need to practice shooting the ball.

Handball comes down to shot execution. You may have the best strategy and choose the right shot to hit every time, but if you can’t execute the shot you will not win many matches. When you want to hit a pass down the right side of the court you need to make sure the ball goes down the right side of the court. If a defensive ceiling shot is the high percentage shot, but you miss the ceiling and put the ball off the back wall, it doesn’t turn out to be a very effective defensive shot. Being patient doesn’t do you any good if you get a set up and then make a hand error. Practicing in the court by yourself will decrease your hand errors, increase your accuracy, and improve your shot execution.

Just playing matches will help you to improve, but I believe it is also important to practice on your own. I have heard it said that handball is the perfect game. Practice makes perfect.

(the tournament committee went crazy with the scheduling headaches!) Overall, almost half of the matches in the A division were decided by tie-breakers. Tyler Stoffel broke through from his number 3 seed to take the trophy and advance to the Open division (look out Dad – you may have to move to your age bracket!) Clearly a force to contend with in the coming years, Tyler now has some of the strength to go with his solid technique. Even a seasoned Steve Tamminga could only provide a little competition in the finals, scoring the most points of any contender but not enough to defeat Stoffel. Daniel Van Aartsen had a great tournament claiming third place and Dane Swanson showed great progress to claim the consolation title. It wasn’t the finals, but the younger David Miller finally defeated older brother Michael with a thrilling roll-out to end a tie-breaker in the consolation semi-finals. The entire field should be very proud of their play – it was great to watch all the new talent blossoming in Minnesota, undoubtedly the result of the great collegiate programs at the U of M and Mankato State. Many of the players from last year moved up to the A’s leaving the door open for Steve Letourneau in the B Division. He seized the opportunity and captured the title coming from the sixth seed even defeating the second seed, Matt Johnson in a tough battle in the semis. Drew Christensen proved a worthy opponent but could not find enough defense to get ahead of Letourneau. Matt Johnson repeated for third place with a tough win over an improving Jesus Cordero. Tom Pearson took home the consolation trophy. Some say Lee Johnson (from Iowa) should have been in the B division as he was way to strong for several pretty good players in the C Division. But then David Abramson did the same thing in the lower half of the draw including playing in a preliminary round. The finals were set and the two players had a great match. Lee came out on top - both he and Abramson look ready for the B’s. Kara Smith had a very tense match with Matt Job to win the third place title with an 11-10 tie-breaker win. The consolation bracket was extremely competitive with both semi-finals going to tie-breakers. John Johnson won his at 11-8 and Josh Klaseus won his at 11-10 setting up the coni final. Johnson had more left in the tank and took the honors.

The Golden Masters (50+) A division was loaded with good players. Jay Spooner (from Fargo) played great, defeating last year’s champ Tim Fichtel in the semis and a great looking Hank Ulrich in the finals. It may be that Brett Broxey took a little too much out of Hank in the toe-breaker semi final. Brett went on to defeat Fichtel for third place getting revenge for the previous year’s finals loss. Phil Kleineschay defeated Mike Black for consolation honors. Great play from the guys with 50+ years under their belt! The Super Masters (60+) division brought a few more new faces again this year as the baby boomers crossed into the magic 60’s. Still, no one could defeat the real master John Nett. It looked like John Miller wouldn’t even put up much of fight but he got hot taking a lead in the second game. But Nett just kept him off-balance enough to pull out the win. Greg Taylor was happy about defeating Mike McQuillan (he thinks it is the first time ever) in the early rounds and went on to take third after getting trounced by Miller in the semis. Brian Mahaffy survived to get the consolation prize. It seems like Gary Rohrer is always in the hunt – from his very first junior titles more than 50 years ago to another win in the 70+ bracket. There were some tough challenges but in the end Gary hits the ball where most of us can’t hit back and he took home the Diamond Masters title. He looks pretty good with two replacement hips – hey, doesn’t that disqualify him from this bracket? His hips are only a few years old! John Peterson joined the 70’s this year and took home third place with a pretty good showing. Jim Noren still has it and took home the consolation trophy.

Minnesota State Handball Club First Annual Alumni Handball

Tournament Saturday, April 14, 2012

Mankato State University The Minnesota State Handball Club had its first annual Alumni Handball tournament on Saturday, April 14th. The club has been in existence for five years, so there are alumni, finally. 26 current and former players participated in the tournament. With the World players of Handball (WPH) and United States Handball Association sponsoring the tournament with memberships, balls and shirts, a great event was sure to unfold. Fliers and information for the Minnesota State Singles championships, Tall Corn tournament, Race4Eight, and the Minneapolis Summer Handball programs were distributed. The seeding session of the tournament

began with four pools of players playing round robin games of rally score to play themselves into their single elimination brackets. Then, there were four divisions of play where players played one game to 21 with a traditional scoring format. !

After the conclusion of the single elimination bracket, anyone at the courts that wanted to play entered a 2-bounce tournament. The contestants were lined up by age (6 to 45) and divided into four courts. The six players in each court played to 11. The first three players to 11 in each court played a second game to 11. The winner advanced to the championship 2-bounce court for a final game to 11. The four court winners were 7 year old Zack Wells, freshman Joe Schnegelberger, sophomore Matt Larson, and coach/alumnus John Stoffel. Matt Larson was victorious in a very competitive match. His name will appear on the prestigious 2-bounce trophy in the Handball Club’s trophy case. ! Once all the tournament brackets were done, the players convened at Jake’s Stadium Pizza for pizza and camaraderie. We are hoping this event becomes an annual occurrence. If you want to follow the Minnesota State Handball program, follow us by joining the Minnesota State Handball Club Facebook group. Video and pictures of the tournament will be posted there.

great job and kept the courts squeaky dry. And, to everyone’s surprise the brand new fourth batch of “21” handballs performed well with not a single broken ball.

The Open division was defended by last year’s champs Andy Nett and John Nett as they defeated a very determined Mike Gustafson and Brandon Glaze in two tough games. Andy showed his resolve to control the court and the play. Andy and his father John defended their 2011 title making it three out of the last four years. Tim Kappes and Brian Burke made a quick $20 winning the consolation prize by forfeit when Marc Tobin’s partner Donavan Foley woke up sick on Saturday morning.

In the A division, Brett Broxey with substitute Bob Milliken blew threw the division before having to work pretty hard to defeat Emil Weiler and Tim Fichtel in two games. Bailey Chandler and Sheldon Silberman went to an 11-9 tie breaker to defeat John Nakasone and Andy Staab for the consolation honors. Our condolences to Hank Ulrich (Brett’s original partner) on the death of his father.

Joe Taylor and Tim Zigmund defeated some tough competition winning the B division over Ed Simonet and Tom Bordenave. Ed and Tom looked a little dazed in scoring only 6 and 4 in the finals. It must have been too much

hospitality or the strange semi-final mid-match forfeit. Lee Johnson (son of John) hooked up at the last minute with Ma Vang and went on to capture consolation honors in a very contested match over Mike Auran and Mike Leiter. Everyone in the division was talking about Lee’s lob serve.

Thanks to the St. Anthony AC and the tournament committee of Sheldon Silberman, Emil Weiler, Brian Mahaffy, Steve Tamminga and Larry Larson for making this one of the best tournaments in the Twin Cities. Taylor Talks - from page 1 MSHA News

from the Nationals

62nd USHA national singles handball tournament at Los

Caballeros in Fountain Valley, California

While it was closing in on 100 degrees in the Twin Cities, it was in the low 80's in Southern California (bet you're sorry you weren't there). Minnesota threw eight players into the mix. Knowing that he had to leave on Wednesday, Steve Johnson, "going all in," signed up for the Open, and he drew Luis Moreno. Let's just say there was no risk that he was going to have to change his flight and stay an extra day in CA. He was in good spirits after his match and was happy to have had the opportunity to be on the court with a player like Moreno. "A" for effort Steve. Another very expected men's Open player was Andy Nett, who breezed through his first round match 2 and 1. A very exciting tie-breaker victory over Marcos Chavez in his second round set him up for Paul Brady in the third round. While that's as far as his singles tournament went, he did post very respectable scores, and the incredible play that we are used to seeing from him, against the eventual champ, Brady. In Open Doubles, Andy and his partner Luis Moreno (yes, the same one that stomped Johnson) breezed their way to and through the finals. They easily won the national Open Doubles title in two games, 21-5 and 21-10. Bailey Chandler has evidently raised some fear in the women's Open circuit, because her first round match was a no-show. In her second round, Bailey faced number one seeded Reilly. She played a very

close first game getting 18 points, but in the second, Reilly chopped her at the knees allowing Bailey only nine points. In Women's Doubles, Bailey and her partner, Tracy Davis worked their way to the finals. Unfortunately, the results were not in their favor, losing in two games. Let's move from Open to oldest. Gary Rorher and Paul Schulz were competing in the 70's Doubles. This was a division that almost all the teams drew a first round bye (actually it was 5 of 11 teams). Rumor had it (according to sources that you may or may not know) that Gary used his free time getting loud up in the viewing gallery. Noooooo?!?! Rorher and Schulz handily won their first match and handily lost their second match. John Stoffel played in the 40 and 45 Singles. Let's just say that he was there more for Tyler than for himself. All kidding aside, while his scores didn't show it, John was very competitive in his matches posting some very exciting rallies. He was also very active in his scouting efforts, attempting to lure many of Southern California's best college potentials to Mankato. I don't think he told any of them where Mankato is. Another middleager in the nationals mix was Steve Tamminga. Not fully able to accept the fact that he went over the hill this year, he signed up for B singles and 40 singles. Losing both his first round matches, he gained focus in the B coni's cutting his way through a field of teenagers finally losing a close 11-9 tie breaker in the finals. All that was done with a torn meniscus in a right knee that looked like a pumpkin. Just like a typical handball player,; not smart enough to quit and not dumb enough to quit.

And then there was the youngest Minnesota competitor, Tyler Stoffel. He played in both the B singles and the 15-year-old singles, breezing his way to the finals in both divisions. While he played well in the B finals he found himself up against a very good Irish player and was unable to bring home the dinner plate (settling for the second place salad plate). But considering that the Irish are to handball what the Dominican's are to baseball (I want to see credentials), Tyler has nothing to feel bad about in his run for a national B title. In the 15-year-old bracket, Tyler found himself up against B consolation champ, Luis Bustos in the finals. Completely spent after his heroic tie-breaker victory over Tamminga, Bustos could not find enough in the tank to get through Stoffel for the 15 year old title. Tyler won easily in two games, 11 and 9. It was a great run for Tyler this year both locally and nationally. He is going to be fun to watch these next few years. Watch out Andy. Way to go Minnesota handball players. Signing out from the O.C.

Friends we’ve lost Ken Johnson, a long time player and contributor to handball in Minnesota died in Texas on July 16, 2012 at the age of 73. Ken was a big factor in any handball draw he was in. He was always in contention, whether it was singles or doubles. He played for 30 plus years mostly representing the Decathlon Athletic Club. He was as enthusiastic a fan in the gallery as he was a player on the court. Ken will be missed by the handball community. In August, Alva Rankin, aged 61 was killed in a car crash in northern Minnesota on his way home to his family in Wisconsin. Alva was a great player with a great attitude about life and the game of handball. He started playing at the Midway in the 1970's and was still playing in 2012. He had several injuries and operations, but always came to play. His ultimate goal was to beat anyone who had ever beaten him. He didn't leave very many of those winners, if any, when he died. Alva's great laugh and love for the game of handball will be greatly missed.

University of Minnesota

Construction Update Construction on the University of Minnesota Recreation Center expansion is currently running on schedule and slated to be completed by fall of 2013. This expansion will give us much needed space and flexibility in the court area and improve the already strong venue’s ability to host large scale tournaments including Intercollegiate National Champ-ionships and USHA National Championships. The current hiatus on events at the facility is still in effect, but will be lifted as early as spring of 2013, depending on how quickly the contractors can restore the emergency access doors. We are cautiously hopeful of holding the 2013 MSHA Open Singles Championship at the University in the end of April (April 26-28). For updates, be sure to check the MSHA website frequently.

News from the MSHA Board of Directors

At the Open Singles tournament on April 28, 2012, Steve Tamminga, Mike Kloos and Matt Johnson were re-elected to new three-year terms on the MSHA Board of directors. MSHA Secretary, Sheldon Silberman provided statistical information on the membership and the 2012 tournament participation. Treasurer, Larry Larson reported an approximate net gain of $2,500 not counting the $1,500 sent to both the U of M and Mankato State for collegiate expense reimbursement. He noted the need to raise additional funds in the upcoming years to pay for the permanent home of the MSHA Hall of Fame in the remodeled U of M Rec. Center, support hosting the 2014 Nationals, and continued collegiate support. At the summer meeting of the Board of Directors, John Miller was elected president for the 2012-1013 season. Matt Johnson was elected as vice president and Larry Larson and Sheldon Silberman were re-elected as treasurer and secretary, respectively. Tournament dates were discussed and proposed. Mike Wells had sent a note that they could not host the Masters Doubles early in 2013 due to construction at the YMCA. Since the U of M is still under construction and unable to host the traditional fall singles tournament, it was decided to hold the 2013 Master Doubles in the fall of 2012 in the Fall Classic time slot. The board supported a resolution to pursue one-wall improvements at Christian Park in Richfield.

Outdoor handball is back in the Twin Cities!

“Occupy Bloomington Street,” “Just for the Wall of it,” and “The Richfield Ball Bashers” are just a few of the corny names thrown around over the summer at Christian Park in Richfield. The park is located at the 6800 block of Bloomington Ave. So. in Richfield (see the MSHA website for a map), and the regular day of play is Sunday starting at 2:00 p.m. Dane Swanson happened across the park with a wrong turn, and while it is not the three-wall that we are accustomed to playing outside, he managed to lure 15 players with a handball picnic party at the beginning of the summer for some wild one-wall fun. We showed up at 2:00 p.m. on that first Sunday, armed with tape, chalk, tape measures, plumb lines and framer’s squares to claim our playing surfaces (two courts). While the framing is regulation one-wall height (16 feet), the wall is only clad 10 feet tall with higher chain link fencing. Due to the slightly irregular playing surface, we are playing with a racquetball. There is room for improvement of the courts, but all those who have been coming down on Sundays have been very excited at being able to play outside again. We are working to gain a meeting with the Richfield Parks director with hopes to create a permanent handball park there. Four tennis courts are situated next to the one wall (2 handball courts) that we are using. These courts have the same 16-foot high framing that could allow for potentially six more courts in the future. Who knows, this could also possibly even lead to three-wall? I will admit that I was a little skeptical of one-wall having never played it before, but I have found it to not only be pretty dang fun, but also very addictive. As the summer winds down and all Minnesota handball moves back inside, we are hoping to build momentum after this first year returning outdoors. If you are interested in playing or simply being kept up-to-date with this outdoor handball effort please send an email to me, Steve Tamminga, and I will add your name to our Minnesota One-Wall list.
