Assalamualaikum and Salam Sejahtera.

2020 marked another year of significant growth filled with both triumphs and challenges as we continue to spear-head change and transform the paradigms of learning. Despite of gender, age, ethnicity and background, MSF always believed that education is the core recipe for an individual’s success. On this note, I am pleased to share with you some highlights of our achievements in 2020.

Undoubtedly, our proudest achievement was under our Education pillar – which is the heart of MSF. We have continued partnering with our long-term partners like Generasi Gemilang and Community at Heart, which both have never failed to provide continuous improvement for their students. We are also honoured to be able to spon-sor two new education centres - IDEAS Autism Centre and Society for the Severely Mentally Handicapped (SSMH) – which are providing therapies for B40 children with the goal that they will independent and able to live a normal life in the society.

Message from the Chairman

Dato’ Indera Syed Norulzaman bin Syed KamarulzamanMah Sing Foundation’s Chairman

For our health and wellbeing pillar, we have expanded our partnership with like-minded organisation like SOLS Health for a family support programme, which is in very much dire need during this Covid-19 outbreak, especially for the B40 families.

Since the entire world was hit with the Covd-19 outbreak in early 2020, we have extended our helping hands to individuals and communities impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic through various partnerships. A total of RM4.275 million was channelled to National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), Ministry of Home Aairs (KDN), Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL), non-profit organisation #OpsHarapan and three state governments – Selangor, Johor and Penang.

For community development, we have kick-started an entrepreneurship programme with Women of Will for the ladies in the PPR community. On top of that, MSF has also continued supporting Hopes Malaysia for a sustainable livelihood project for the villagers in Kota Belud, following our success of the Megascale Water Gravity Project last year which provided clean water to them.

Looking ahead, we are poised to bring humanitarian work to new heights, together with strategic partners and collaborators across various platforms. On behalf of MSF, I would like to sincerely thank all our donors, partners and stakeholders for being a part of our 2020 and still making it soar, amidst the Covid-19 outbreak worldwide. We will continue to focus on impacting more communities in need in 2021 as we stay true to our vision, “Reinventing Hope and Creating Lasting Change in Children’s Lives”.

Keluarga Akrab Mencapai Impian (KAMI) is a family support programme that provide a safe space for family members to express their feelings and encourage eective communication with one another. Partnering with SOLS Health, the programme in PPR Seri Semarak aimed to strengthen family relationships and build capacity in parents and family members to have the skills to support one another.

Personal GrowthParents said they have rated higher comfort levels in expressing emotions to family, relationship with family, quality of life and self-satisfaction.

Family IntimacySome of the parents reported that the programme has provided them the space to share their feelings towards their children and were able to understand their children’s thoughts and feelings more as they have practiced to listen to their children more at home. This has helped to improve their relationship with the family.

After attending the KAMI program, I have become more patient especially when dealing with disagreements with my child. I have involved my children in discussion, given my daughter space to talk instead of jumping into conclusion and I found that there are less conflict between us now. I also noticed that there is now lesser conflict between my daughter and son , where my daughter now automatically tries to help my son with is school work and teach him techniques that she learnt from KAMI programme.

- 43 year-old mother & participant I used to think that my mother doesn’t like me but now I know that she loves me. We spend a lot more time together and I am much closer to her now. I’m also more expressive towards her now about my feelings. There is more communication between us and my mother also give me a lot more attention and praises now.

I felt that I have more interest in studying since I started online classes on Zoom during the MCO. Everyday, I feel excited for the class to begin and I look forward to the homework that my teacher gave. Even for my least favourite subject, Maths, now I like it more as I can manage to answer all the questions correctly. I don’t even take afternoon naps now as I’m afraid that I might overslept and miss my online class.” - Senior Class Stage 3 student

“When we first started our online sessions, he had a tantrum, cried, and was belligerent because he prefers consistency and is often resistant to doing something new. The thera-pist identified his problem and introduced a reward system. The desired reward can help him get over his anxiety by helping him focus on the outcome. His sitting tolerance was only for 8-10 minutes but now has improved to 30 minutes followed by the rewards.”

PROGRAMMES WITH GENERASI GEMILANG

As Education is the Foundation's main pillar, we have been working with various strategic partners to provide academic assistance and guidance to the B40 children who are finding challenges coping with their studies at school. One of our long-term partner, Yayasan Generasi Gemilang has been with us, helping and empowering B40 students through academic assistance and guidance.

2020 marked the 4th year of our partnership and we have grown from helping one community to three communities throughout these years. We started the LIT Secondary programme at Taman Prima Selanyang in 2017, and expanded to PPR Taman Putra Damai for KidzRead & PPR Pudu Ulu for LIT Primary and LINUS in partnership with Outpost Uniform in 2020.

The measurement of success of all the programmes are based on Generasi Gemilang's 3A - Attendance, Attainment and Attitude.

LINUSEven though the average attendance is not satisfactory, we still see 3 out of 10 students achieved 80% attend-ance and 1 of them achieved 100% attendance

In 2020, we celebrated the achievement of 8 students who excelled in the national school examinations. The students successfully scored at least an 'A' for their examination and half of them even passed all their papers.

This LIT Secondary programme has enabled the students to improve their studies and achieve good grades in the national examinations. Kudos to them.

The COVID-19 pandemic has dampen the plans for all of us. For NGOs that revolves with education programmes, they have no choice but to move everything digitally. We are very thankful to the Generasi Gemilang team and their partner who have been providing support to the students in ensuring their learning journey continue through during this uncertain period.

LIT Secondary Students are well-prepared with their books and stationar-ies before class, even with some who had connection issue and was disconnected many times, they still tried to reconnect so that they do not miss out on the classes.

LIT Primary Despite the many changes that our students have to adapt to, after the first few lessons, we saw that our students have learnt how to log onto Zoom early and on time for the session.
