Project Deliverable:

The goal of the project is to design, build, test and deliver to KGCOE, a centrifugal pump system for particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) studies, which can be used both as a teaching tool for undergraduate students as well as a research tool for graduate and faculty researchers.

Test Results

As head rises, the flow decreases, demonstrating basic pump curve relationships.

With the addition of a vaned diffuser, the head generated is increased versus flat ring diffusers.

Discussion

Pump provides 10x the options (impeller and diffuser) with 65% faster component switch time

Head generated is up to 60% greater than previous system benchmarks

Flow rate is not up to maximum theoretical value of 22.3 gpm. However, ~ 25% increase over previous iteration

Diffuser made a large difference in the amount of head generated, up to a 27% increase for the basic 102 impeller

New designs can be rapid prototyped and tested in the test loop within several days based on standard dimensions used for the components
