A Personal Journey of Self-Discovery
Read Extensively
The more that you read, the
more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the
more places you’ll go.Dr. Seuss
Again, Read Extensively
Reading was also an early part of the regimen. For
Chesky, a source may come in the form of a biography
of a business hero such as Steve Jobs or Walt Disney.
His primary book source on management technique
is Andy Grove’s High Output Management. To learn
the ins and outs of hospitality, he went to the Cornell
Hospitality Quarterly, a scholarly journal published by
the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration.
Brian Chesky, founder of AirBNB, reads a lot!
Again Again, Read Extensively
There’s no TVs anywhere. He (Warren Buffett)
spends all day reading. He takes maybe one meeting
a day, and he thinks so deeply.
Warren Buffett, one of the richest people in the world, also reads a lot!
Then Think About What You Have Read
Reading furnishes the mind
only with materials of
knowledge; it is thinking that
makes what we read ours.John Locke

Important Dates and Deadlines
• WKWSCI graduate coursework programmes run on semester basis
• Refer to the AY19-20 Academic Calendar (Semester Calendar)http://www.ntu.edu.sg/sasd/oas/AcademicCalendar/Pages/AY2019-20.aspx
• Semester 1 starts on Tuesday, 13 August 2019
• Recess week for Semester 1– Monday, 30 September to Friday, 4 October, 2019
– Makeup classes (due to public holidays or conferences) are usually held during the
recess week
• Revision and Examination for Semester 1– Monday, 18 November to Friday, 6 December, 2019
Important Dates and Deadlines
• Course Registration Period (AY19-20 Semester 1)
– First two weeks of term: Monday, 13 August (1100hrs) to
Wednesday, 21 August (2359hrs) 2019
– This is when you can add (register) or drop (de-register) a course.
For this reason, it is also known as ‘add-drop period’
– Registration is on first-come-first-served basis via Course
Registration System in GSLink
– Wednesday, 21 August 2019 (2359hrs) is the deadline to register for
courses. As NTU observes this deadline very strictly, please note this
date
Course Registration Issues
• Some classes are full– Not being able to register for some classes happens every semester
– As registration is done on a first-come-first-served basis, students who are slower in
registering for courses may be left out
– Some students tend to over-register for courses and will drop courses in the second
week of the add/drop period
• What do you do?– Do not panic!
– Do not hound the course instructors
– Take other courses
– Constantly monitor the class sizes on GSLink
– Attend classes during add/drop even if not registered yet as vacancies may open up
– Carefully plan your timetable
– Do not over-register for courses
Course Registration Issues
• Can I de-register from a course after the add/drop period?
– After the course registration period, NTU will not allow you to register or
deregister from any course
– You can submit a formal course withdrawal request, but the withdrawal
will be reflected in the official transcript with a ‘W’ or ‘Withdrawn’ grade
Academic Matters
• GSLink– Graduate Student Link (GSLink) is a one-stop service point for Graduate Students which offers
academic, administrative and transactional services– Example: Course/examination timetable, course registration, exam seating arrangement,
release of results, academic records, option of study, e-billing, update personal particulars and so on
– http://www.ntu.edu.sg/Students/Pages/default.aspx
• NTULearn– This is where students will access the course folders for courses registered– https://ntulearn.ntu.edu.sg/
Academic Matters
• Instructional Methods– Class timings (Weekday): 3 hours per course (day or night); night classes are from 6.30pm to 9.30pm– Class timings (Saturday): Full day
• Mode of delivery– Lectures– Class activities (term paper, research paper, written reports, essays, articles, case studies, quizzes, individual
and/or group projects, assignments, presentation and so on)
• Course Assessment and Grading– Most courses are assessed using a combination of a final examination (usually 50 to 60%) and continual
assessment (usually 40 to 50%)– CA can constitute group and/or individual activities (coursework)
Academic Matters
• Cross-listed Courses– Courses that are shared between two or more programmes and are part of the prescribed
programme curriculum– Considered as electives– Priority to register for courses is given to host programme students
• Cross Programme Courses– Courses that are outside of the prescribed programme curriculum– New intake students are not allowed to register for courses outside of their prescribed
curriculum in their first semester of study– Students are only allowed to take maximum of three cross programme courses– Considered as electives– Students must have attained CGPA of 3.50 and above to be eligible to apply for cross
programme courses
